  1. Hi all, I am after a bit of advice really. I have seen some threads on here about replacement SatNav disks and wondered where it was cheapest to get one and if they have all got the same information on them. I know you can get the updated map software directly from the Mapping people. Is this the same as the official Lexus Disk? I thought that the disks had Lexus software on them as well as the maps. Also, how much are they getting them directly from the mapping people compared to an offical Lexus one. There is one on ebay and I wondered if that was good value or I could get one directly from the mapping people or even Lexus themselves for around the same price. Does anyone know?
  2. I have managed to lock the wife's key for my car when I locked it although I did have my key on me so I wasn't locked out. I just put it down to the radio waves in the local facinity. Pretty much the same problem as can happen when you cannot unlock the car and can't start it as it does not recognise that a key is present. Luckily I did read on this forum that holding the fob over the start button gets around it. :) But thinking about it you need the fob on you outside the car to lock the car anyway don't you?
  3. Does anyone know if you can change the settings for when the alarm goes off? I have twice unlocked the car with the remote when swapping the child seat from my wifes car to mine and only opened a back door. After about 2 minutes the alarm goes off which is usually about 11 at night which causes the neighbours to curtain twitch and are also no doubt seething at me. I suspect as I hadn't opened either of the front doors which is why it went off but it's easy to forget. :(
  4. I have had the airbag warning light come on a few times and yes, when the car is switched off and back on again it has cleared itself. A bit worrying but it hasn't happened for a few months now. Not had the problem you have experienced with the aircon. Did have a squeaking seat frame when I got the car but this was rectified by Lex. I think that there is a technical bulletin for the ceaking seat so Lex should know about that one.
  5. do u know who the authorised lex bodyshop was? got a few stonechips on my bonnet..not many..might just do it myself coz its not down to the metal..also Dayglows what do u think of the final job? Hi mate. I had the car done at Fish Brothers general bodyshop in Swindon. They own quite a few dealerships of quite a few different marques and their bodyshop is approved by all of them. The job is first class I have to say. You cannot tell (even close up) that it has been sprayed.
  6. The Mole, whilst I can totally understand your frustrations I am one of those people that you talk about. I test drove a new IS at the local dealer and would have preferred to buy it from them. However, they were just not competitive. I explained my situation to them so they were kept full informed at all times. Another dealer offered a substantial saving over my local dealer and therefore I did go elsewhere. It was a choice of buying the new car from the nice salesman at the local dealer without MM. Or going elsewhere and being able to afford MM. So in my book the choice was quite easy. My car now however, is serviced at my local dealer so they do at least get some revenue for the good work that the salesman did in convincing me that the car was the one I wanted. Now, it's not all roses. Yes I saved quite a few thousand but...... I have had issues with my car, a lot of issues. But because the warranty work was undertaken by my local dealer I had no come back on the dealer that provided the car originally as they didn't have chance to fix the faults themselves. Buying the car from a different dealer to the one I have the warranty work undertaken by is a huge issue. So is it worth it? In my opinion Yes, I nwo drive the car I wanted with the spec I wanted at a price I could afford. If the salesman who provided me with the test drive to start with would have been competitive then yes I would have bought the car form him without question, but unfortunatley he wasn't and I didn't. Although I sympathise with how the salespeople must feel when the consumer does go elsewhere there could be sales that you make where other salespeople have done all the leg work. There must be a salesman somwhere else that is pulling their hair out so on the whole does it balance out?
  7. Hi Exiled. I have an IS250 SE Manual with MM and I have had quite a few issues. I have had 3 drivers seats, 3 dashboards, 2 door cards, a new sat nav system, a new seat belt adjuster, a new gearstick surround, a new gearbox gate selector, 4 new alloys and a new instrument cluster so my IS has been back and forth to the dealers like a yoyo but it does look brand new inside. That being said I am one of the unlucky ones. There are plenty of IS250's out there that do not have any creaks and rattles and there are those that do. The creaks and rattles are on both diesels and petrol versions but you could buy one that is silent. There doesn't seem to be any logic to whther you will get a noisy one or a silent one. I do have to say however that taking a Lexus back to the dealer is no where near as painful as taking any other marque back. I have come to the conclusin that you will get problems with all cars. It then goes down to how you are treated by the dealer and at Lexus you are treated like a human being, not a statisic.
  8. Hang in there Jamboo. As you say, I think the squeaks around the SatNav are a 'characteristic'. I get the sqeak all of the time hot or cold but only when going around corners. Also if I push my left leg into the centre console it makes exactly the same squeak. I have been driven slightly insane by the noises in that it now feels like it the cars way of communicating with me. :( I too have toyed with the idea of keeping the car beyong when the warranty runs out but to tell you the truth it scares me. I already feel that when dealers see my reg they already knock a few grand off bottom book for the trade in knowing it will be a nightmare. Especially as my car now only has 2000 miles on the speedo after it was changed under warranty. Doesn't really show that the cars history is one of reliability. I think it may be worthwhile speaking to Lex GB to ask about an extended warranty. I think that would be the least they can do for you. Good luck!!!!
  9. I have to say that the only rattle I get now seems to be the drivers window rattling in the door frame over really rough surfaces. But it's bearable as it's rare I go over very rough surfaces. I do have an issue with the SatNav though that in buildup areas tents to take a route of its own and loses me as it thinks I am on a different road. I have told Lex about it twice and they say they cannot find a problem with it. Now with the help of the TSB's that Tango has listed there is a fix for it. Phew, Lex just wouldn't listen to that one. I did contact Lex GB to see if after all the problems I have had, whether they could sort me a out something to get into a different Lex. I had a letter back saying that I could go to a dealer choose a car and then get the dealer to speak to Lex GB who would consider a contribution in reflection of the number of issues and problems that I have had. There was no indication of what that contribution would be. I did actually try to trade the Lex in for a Merc CLS a few weeks ago but the best offer back from my car from any Lex dealer on a trade in was £15,500 which was below what I would have expected especially for an SE with MM and 22k on the clock. The Lex dealers said that they were all stocked up and therefore were offering below book for it. Ouch... So i still have it and yes I get the odd creak but it's so much better than how it has been I just grin and bear it.
  10. I feel for you Jamb. I had the same with my replacement dash but it had dropped on the one side and the gap on the left between the dash and the door was a lot smaller than the dash on the other side. Lex replaced it with another dash (3rd time lucky) and 'touch wood' it looks to be how it should have been to start with now.
  11. I called Chipsaway and the guy came out to give me a quote. He has a look at the chips in the door which were actually about 2mm across so very small. The guy started to tell me what he was going to do. He was going to fill the chips with filler, sand it down, spray it black and polish it. I queried why he was going to spray it bacl when the car was grey. He apologised and said that it looked black to him. I also asked him about the finish as the Lexus paintwork was smooth. He replied that it is not smooth as he could see orange peel on it. I was quite miffed and no matter how much I looked I couldn't see it. To me the Lexus paintwork is smooth. The Audi has a bit of an orange peel look but not the Lex. Anyway he's the professional I thought. He then said it would not be 100% perfect and you would still be able to tell close up but not from a distance. I had the feeling that he was saying that he still wanted to be paid afterwards if I could still see where he had done the work. Then came the quote. He quoted me £160 + VAT. I thought that this seemed a bit steep just to fill in a couple of what looked like stonechips so I took the car to the authorised Lexus bodyshop. They quoted £200 + VAT but said that it would not be noticable after they had done it. They would also take the door handle off etc and do it properly. For the sake of £40 and the peace of mind that it would be done professionally in a sprayshop rather than on my drive I opted for the professionals. I dropped the car off tis morning so the Lex should be back as new when I pick it up. :)
  12. Very similar problem with mine - 4 little markes in an arch - right across the rear passenger door - same height as my son's bike handlebars...but of course it wasn't him and through to the metal!! I have had a touch up go meself and it has come out very good. I've used the car touch up kit from Lexus (£8), used cocktail stick to apply just inside the scratch, let it dry for a couple of hours and then cut it gently with TCut... A real fine job too...almost invisible from a few feet away, and after each wash I re-do it...almost totally filled and difficult to notice thoughy it's not 100% - more like 60%. Takes a lot of time and patience and a very steady hand. Your scratches seem to wide to do this easily, so I would recommend professional attention... I do have one of those repair touch up kits in the garage that is still unopened. It's worth a bash I suppose. Even if it does need professional attention afterwards. Nice tip about the cocktail stick too. :)
  13. I have had the roof panel resprayed on mine due to a chip and dent from a rather large stone/brick dropping on it ...still don't know if it came off a bridge or was thrown up by a truck . The job involved removing the front and rear screens to ensure the clear coat ended under the screen seals, so I was nervous to say the least. The Insurance Company insisted I had the work done by one of their approved bodyshops.....and it was a Vauxhall shop . I did ask them if they would have a problem with matching the finish and they said no. Despite my doubts they did a good job, and there's no noticable difference between the roof panel and the OEM painted panels. The shop manager said it was the best car they'd ever worked on....just as well he told me that after they'd completed the work I would have preferred the local Dealership to have been responsible for the work, especially for removing and refitting the glass and I did get a similar quote from them. However, they readily admit they would have used third parties to do the glass removal/refit and the painting, so essentially there's no difference. If the rework isn't up to the standard of the rest of the car then you don't accept it until it is. ...and yes mine is Cadoxton Slate too, so I'll be very surprised if Chipsaway can perform an 'invisible' local repair. Thanks Tango. I have just tried filling in one fo the online forms with chipsaway and got and SQL error so their site needs looking at. I have therefore called them and they are going to get one of their local reps to give me a call. I will also pop down to Lexus tomorrow to see if they can point me in the direction of their approved bodyshop and I will also get a quote from them. If the chips away guy has any doubts whatsoever I will get the Lex approved bodyshop to do it and take the hit in the pocket.
  14. Hi all, Some bright spark has put some chips in one of my rear doors. Looks like a trolley or something has been pushed into my back door and taking the paint off but without any dents etc. There are 4 marks that look like stone chips on the door all down to the metal and about 4mm in diameter. I am looking to get them sorted out but just wondered if they can be repaired without the need of a full door respray. Does anyone have any tips or companies that can do it or am i looking at a full door respray? Has anyone had any panels respayed on the new IS? I am worried that because the paint finish is so smooth that any repray will stick out like a sore thumb.
  15. I had the same problem on the drivers side. I pinponted my problem to the button on the seat belt adjuster. When I held it the vibration stopped. Changed under warranty and is perfect now.
  16. After having a 3 series and the wife having a Z4 I have never had any regrets about moving to Lexus. Yes if you are looking for a more involving drive then the 3 series will win as that's the market BMW target. With Lexus you get the whole package. The Lexus is by far a much quieter drive (depending on the tyres) and much more comfortable. Plus the extras you get are much better. Also looking at the residuals the Lexus seems to be holding it's own and in my opinion is holding up better than the beemers. The IS250 is such a silky engine that it is never felt wanting. The manual gearbox on the other hand seems to get lose it's crispness over time as I am told it is a very robust and very strong gearbox which was built for reliability. The BMW's are two a penny and seem to be everywhere but the Lexus are still relatively rare on UK roads and are always talking points at work as to whose the IS in the car park belongs to and what a nice car it looks. I have been asked on numerous occasions for people to go out in it or have a closer look. I never had that with the BMW. As for parking beeps. I too preferred these when I first got into a Lexus but after living with the camera and actaully being able to see things behind you I wouldn't go back. I noticed that Audi are now offereing the reverse camera on the new a4. In my opinion it is by far more superior. My wife doesn't like it because she rarely drives it and she relies on the beeps in her car. The other day after the wife packed the boot as I was putting the little boy in the back, I was just about to reverse off the drive when looking at the camera I saw something on the drive behind the car. It turned out to be my wifes really expensive sunglasses on the floor behind. These would have been crushed it I would have had the beeps. It has also helped on so many occasion by actually being able to with your eyes rather than hear with your ears. At the end of the day it depends whether you want an inolving drive or a nice car allround.
  17. "Discovery of Perfection" - Not in my car it's not Jamboo. :duh: To be honest I have become resignedto the fact that as I had one of the first off the production line the robots were not as accurate as they could have been. The early compononents for the car were still being deveoped whilst their quiality was also being improved whilst they ramped up production. I think it's just unfortunate that so many things have gone wrong on one car. I have to admit that when the airbag light came on I was spitting feathers. To be fair Lex are courteous even though I must be a royal pain in the backside by keep going in with more issues. I'm sure they think "oh here he comes again, what has he broken now." I do feel like a pest keep asking for things to be checked and changed but if it's not right, it's not right. I like the car and the brand but i don't like the issues. Perhaps I should try and request a 'special deal' with LOex to try and get into another one. The problem is that the Garage is there to make moneyand are unlikely to compensate me for the problems I have had by a loss of margin on another car. Perhpas Lex GB could add some assistance? Worth a shot I suppose.
  18. Ok, got the car back last week after Lex had it for a couple of weeks. Had the front tyres changed (I had asked for Dunlop tyres not Brisgestones that are on there already as one of the loan cars I had used them and was quieter) whilst it was in as they were worn around the edges. The dash now looked flush (i should hope so as this is the 3rd dash i have had). The instrument cluster was also changed as the dialed rattled when they turned when the start button was pressed and they whizzed around. The gearbox also had a new gater system fitted to fix the crunching when going into 6th. The seat belt plastic cover next to the drivers ear was also changed as it rattled and the driver side air vent was changed as this too was buzzing. The foot rest next to the clutch pedal was also meant to be changed as this was also loose. Anyway, picked the car up looked at the dash and was really pleased with what i saw. I paid for the tyres and drove home. The car was quiet at last. There was the odd creak from the centre console but I thought that the odd creak from the plastic was better than the rattles that it replaced. Anyway, I got home and went around the car. I first noticed that the car didn't have dunlops on but had bridgestones on. When I looked closer I also noticed that one of the alloys had been damaged. It looked like it was damaged when the old rubber was being levered off the rim. I also noticed that the centre console next to the arm rest had popped up and you could see where the fixing was broken so there is an unsightly gap. I'm sure it didn't leave the dealer like that as I'm sure I would have noticed it. It must have happened on the 4 mile jouney home. I also noticed that the foot rest was still loose. The steering wheel was also pointing slightly to the left and when held straight the car veered off to the right. Anyway, I called Lexus and I took the car back in. On closer inspection we noticed that the alloys were bubbling so Lex has agreed to change them all. The car is now booked in for end Sept as I am off on hols soon. So that's the end of it, not quite. When we had the hot weather the other day I realised that the air con wasn't getting cold. Sure enough it was blowing cool air out when the temp settings were on 'LO' but it seems to have lost it's efficiency. So this will need looking at too. When I got to work a friend of mine gave me a DVD and so I went to the car to see what it sounded like. When I tried to eject a disc the disc wouldn't eject and was making some very strange noises. Even when i turned the ignition off it still made the noises. None of the bottons worked either. I then looked inside and could see the top of the disc. I pushed a key in and lifted the disc slightly and it came out. I then pushed one in and ejected it again and it seemed fine again. Then to top it all off on the way home from work tonight the airbag light came on. It was on all the way home. I phoned Lexus service at 5.45 and service was with a customer so I left a message for them to contact me urgently as I have an 11 month old baby and I am worried that the car may not be as safe as I would hope it to be. I was told that they would call me right back. At 6pm I still hadn't received a call so I called back again, a salesman answered and told me servcie was outside with a customer and would call me right back. By 6.30 I still did not have a call so I phoned again. No answer... When I got home I tried restarting the car again to see if the light would reset. Funnily enough it did. But now I am wondering whether there is an issue or not.. Is it me being over finiky and 'in the pursuit of perfection' or am I driving a lemon?
  19. Looks like you need a cage for your Lex then, gotta keep them cats away somehow....... I have seen some pads that you can put on your bonnet with a small charge in so it gives the cat a small shock when they jump on the car...... I wonder if they can be wired up to the mains......
  20. I know exactly what you are saying Jamboo. As you know I too have had my ups and downs but whatever problems I get I can't discount that the overall package of the car is a good one. Although there are different bits that are better on other cars I think the Lex wins hands down. I have really come to love the car whilst it has held together. Even though mine has been back to the dealers more than any other car I have had it's a pleasant experience none the less and it is this that makes the issues bearable. If there's one thing I hate is that the dealer can play dumb sometimes. Like Exiled said "our particular complaint is a world first in that cars history" is what annoys me when i am in a dealer trying to explain a particular issue that I have had. Having already read that other Lex owners on this site have also had the same issue and it is known to Lex as they have provided a fix for that particular issue to be told that it's the first time that this issue has been reported as there is nothing in the Lex database about it. Another the other hand it's when the car is tested and I'm told that how the car is, we've tested others and they are the same..... It doesn't mean it's right though does it!!!!!! Don't treat me like I'm stupid.... Please... Anyway, the love for the Lex and the dealers remain and I was even tempted to get an IS SEL auto for a while at the last visit. I have a manual and seriously regret not getting the auto. If I could turn the clock back would I buy an IS? Without doubt. Like Jamboo I also tested and looked at a lot of other premium badged cars but I still think that the Lex has the best overall package. It's quiet, very comfortable, packed with toys, gorgeous looks and is a rare sight on the roads. It is also quite a talking point when we have friends over for a bar-b or even at work when people ask whose car it is when the car park is already full of BM's, Merc's and Audi's. For anyone reading this is thinking of whether or not to get a Lexus, get one, you will not be disappointed.......
  21. Hey Exiled - the cats are my next door neighbours. Second sentence - "The next door neighbour has 7 cats". I don't have any pets so I certainly wouldn't get a dog. :P
  22. Going back to what Curtisp said about building to a standard rather than a price, its funny but I am sure that is what the Lexus sales rep said to me about Lexus when he was selling me on them. He said that all the other manufacturers manufactured to a price while Lexus made the car and then put a price on it. Was anyone else given this spiel? Going back to the paint issue Jamboo is correct in thinking that the paint/clear topcoat is too soft as against other manufacturers. I don't know why unless it is because someones nephew works for the paint company or something because there is no reason behind it. It is quite possible to make a water based topcoat every bit as hard as a solvent based one. The only downside of WB topcoats is that in hot weather, some of them turn thermoplastic and soften slightly, however as our paint is soft all year round I don't think that is the problem. Yes you guessed it I am in the paint business and on the other thread long ago when we were discussing the paint and I asked the Lexus guy to give us his comments about the paint. I was only having a chuckle as to how big a hole he was going to dig for himself. In short, what we seem to have are Luxury cars with rattly engines (diesel) crap paint and wobbly rear view mirrors that rattle a bit inside as well. Not too bad really is it. The point you make about the paint is an interesting one. The next door neighbour has 7 cats. Now I hate cats for the sole reason on what they do to my car when they walk over it. I have about 4 deep scratches and 6 not so deep scratches over my bonnet where the cats have slid on it. You can see the white primer on the 4 deep ones. Now even though the cats walk over the Audi there are no such scratches. You can see the foot prints and even where they have slipped however it's just my Lex that get the scratches. I will need both front wings and the bonnet resprayed before long but I don't want to do it just yet because I know the cats will just do it again. Arrgghhh, I HATE CATS.......
  23. Went to Lex this morning to change over the loan car. I have now been told that the delay is due to me having another new dashboard (this is the third dash I have had in the car) and it also needs a new instrument cluster as the dials rattle when they go around when the car starts up. Along with the seat belt holder being replaced and the foot rest which aparently had split the last time the dash was replaced I'm going to have a nearly new car back by the looks of it. Fingers crossed I don't get any free rattles and squeaks. Hopefully I should get it back by the end of this week.
  24. Nearly the same thing happened to me Led, but it was when the salesman asked to confirm my address when they were pre programming the satnav before I picked the car up that they couldn't find my road because the new estate I live on wasn't mapped. Every time I get in my car at home and I am using the SatNav I start off in the middle of a field so the satnav struggles to get time and distance figures for the journey until I join a road that is on the map. I have noticed that on the new 07 mapping in the loan car that my road is now on it. Can I get a free upgrade please Lex? :D
