  1. The us Homologation board do not like fuel tanks under the boot, it's all down to the exploding Ford pinto. tank under boot floor + rear end shunt x poor US steel and buid quality = exploding car!
  2. When I lived in Stoke all I could aford to drive was a Talbot Samba!
  3. Goodness I feel like I'm hogging all the topics! You can fitt wheels from a sorer, cos I did no probs. also the std IS wheels that you see loads of on e-bay will fit, the offset means they will be a little further into the wheel arch but when I asked this question some months ago someone was running them on an LS already. Just work out your rolling dia from the tyres they come with to see if your speedo will be effected. Std LS400 alloy 16" width 225 profile 60 whee dia 16 135 = 541.4 Rolling diameter Std IS200 alloy 17" width 215 profile 45 whee dia 17 96.75 = 528.55 Rolling diameter Hence speedo will say you are going faster than you actually are.
  4. how much off is it Barney? If it's 10% then it's worth it for the cam belt change alone! I'm due a cam belt and my folks live in stoke, sounds like Hanley is the place. Now all the pots have closed, who can afford to have a Lexus in Stoke anyway? :winky:
  5. If youre worried about the mpg and are going to do significant mileage you should look out for a car with LPG, if you find the right car without it, consider getting it converted, I had mine done for under 900quid and considering the 40p/litre fuel cost it works out the same as 40mpg and that's on my real bad stop start 10 mile run to work, I get 18mpg on petrol. Other wise as people have said it's mainly easy to repair and they don't go wrong that often, I bought front brake discs and pads and a second hand caliper for less than 100 quid!
  6. Hi Folks, Don't know how many of you don't have a manual or one of the CD based manuals but as almost all of us have unlimited access to the internet these days, I have come across the auto repair reference centre (designed for dealers) and I have the user name and password. I used to have the CD based manual and it was basically the same, then I lost one of the CD's so this is now just as good for me. EBSCO host username: user Passwoed: password
  7. any increase in mpg is good! LS V8 is always going to be considered a gas guzzler, but when you consider the new merc CL350 deisel (spits on the floor at the thought of dirty oil burners) gets 32/gal combined why would you buy a smaller engine or consider driving behind a tractor engine? The new FSI pertol engine in the CL350 gets only 1mpg less than its oil burning sister, again why would you buy a small engine or a deisel? On the PWR mode thing, most people forget that an engine has optimal speeds for producing torque and power, this is not necesarity at low revs. What seems to be happening is that in PWR mode the engine is performing more optimally and making better use of the fuel it's getting. When you learn to drive these days they teach you to drive up to 3rd gear only in urban areas, helps keep speed in check and is more efficient for modern engines that are designed to run at higher revs and do not like to be laboured. Gone are the days of inefficient old donks like the A sereis and ford X flows...
  8. Some of the old merc's used to have the same set up but some had 2 tanks linked, one behind each seat, this allowed one to be removed for an LPG cylinder... why didn't Lexus copy that one!?
  9. defo the aircon condenser water pipe. don't forget it's a luxury car but the S1 is 15+ year old design. You probably could collect the water if you want, but it as it comes from condensation you will have an endless supply...
  10. Don't take it personally! Toyota is the daddy... literally! Maybe my dark windows and the Ice blue HID's have an effect, maybe I should use Maneesh's avitar, my LS does look quite 'pimp' :winky:
  11. I love how people get out of the way on the M1, this doesn't happen unless your car has real 'presence' Also the sound, the V8 is an iron fist in a velvet glove :winky:
  12. unfortunately 3pty is risky these days, small incident or as ontheroad says windscreen would scupper you. new drivers and banned returning drivers with 1000quid plus policies would be the folks needing it.
  13. Great news ADC. In the same manner that we should make an example of the original folks that were not helpfull, we should sing the praises of new Lexus GB buy and Lexus Glasgow! Write in to autocar!
  14. some of you may remember I just had quite a lot of paint done on the old girl to tidy her up after my decsion to fit LPG and keep her a while longer. Well I just had a van man drive down the side trying to squeze past! he has agreed to pay but I'm still gutted about my shiny new paint having an 8" score down it. On the bright side, my paint guy is going to give me a quote for at least 50 quid more than he will charge and if I add 50 quid to the quote he will do the bottom half of all the doors where I have many stone chips and a scuff or too also. :winky:
  15. easiest way i found was chuck it in the bin and fit an aftermarket one! head unit quality is not bad but not bril compared to new aftermarket units, the speakers are not bad though, well matched to the car acoustic volume (no suprise there then!)
  16. Murph, is this your first cam belt change? Was just wondering what intervals people have had them changed. I'm at 183K and mine was done at 124K, hoping to not need another one any time soon.
  17. Welcome, Glad to hear you like the car, for all the roght reasons! If you treat her roght she will run forever! (well maybe not quite) Sorry, don't know how to fix your issue though, someone else had this issue a while back, someone will be along to help soon.
  18. Lexus should be ashamed. It only takes a few cases like this to be well publicised to destroy a reputation. Lexus are rapidly building a quality reputation the slogan even says 'the pursuit of perfection' for goodnes sake! I would contact a solicitor and inform Lexus GB that you have done so, also inform them of the pending discussions with motoring press and watchdog programs, not to mention the beating up they could recive here (LOC UK). To re-emphasise their pursuit of perfection... how can a 50K car that's less than 6 years old be scrap without their brand quality being questioned? The loss of face they are bound to get should be concerning them now, never mind if it hits the press/tv. I work for Caterpillar and have recently heard of a 'fair trade' waranty claim on machine that is 8 years old and was only designed to do 6000hours, it's done 29000hrs when the engine blew... that model is not produced anymore nor is the engine (not emissions compliant these days) CAT has paid out a large sum to build an engine from parts stock to satisfy this customer, he pais a small amount of labour to take out the old engine, that's it. This machine cost less than your car when new (built here in Leicester) and like you, the cost of the engine re-build was more that the second hand value of a simmilar good condition machine. CAT do not want to reisk their reputation in scenarios like this, hence we paid up.
  19. I can back up what microcat said, I used to have a ford Ka (stop laughing) anf I fitted a blower to it, obviously with 8psi forced down it , there needed to be more fuel in too. Van AAken developments did my re-maping with a fully programable piggyback ECU (like a superchip), the map these chips apply is steeper therefore more fuel at the top and less at the bottom. I rant on because I asked at the time about what these £30 chips do and he relayed the same story about ignoring the air/fuel signals and basiacally telling the system it was cold applying the choke to force in more fuel. with a system with a seperate cold start injector, as micro cat says, just holds it open. cold start system solenoids are also only rated for a low duty rate, something like 10%, so eventually it will burn out.
  20. What was the fellas question again... Oh, yes, the lights... Don't think it is possible with the LS400 or even the 430, looks like you'll need to get to Halfords and get some of those atractive stick on thingys.
  21. you make us early LS owners V gelous with your LS430 options Mr Ray... :winky:
  22. I think folding is standard but not the electric... lets have a poll :)
