  1. Was MOTed in january. Thanks Chips, your always there to help and it is much appreciated.
  2. Im getting this really annoying noise when im coming to a stop. Dont seem to get it any other time, but when im braking to stop (it normally starts when i have got under 5 mph) i get this knocking noise that sounds like its coming from the front suspension. Any ideas anyone? Its a shame because the car is so quiet the rest of the time. ps its a 1991 LS400, 155k on the clock.
  3. Hi All, Went for a drive this evening to get some shopping from supermarket (what an exciting life i lead!) On the way there i was coming off a slip road onto the dual carraige way. Floored the loud pedal expecting the usual satisfying surge of acceleration, and nothing! the car didnt speed up. Tried again pushing the pedal to the floor and still nothing! Occured to me after a while that the kickdown didnt seem to be working. No matter how hard i pushed the pedal at low revs the box wouldnt change down. Got to supermarket, did shopping, started drive home. Floored it, the box changed down fine and acceleration was good again! Tried this a number of times on way home and it was fine. So- sometimes the kickdown works, sometimes it doesnt. If its not working sometimes when i stop the engine and start it again it will work. What could the problem be? is there some sort of throttle sensor that controls kickdown that could be faulty? could it be an internal gearbox problem? is there a gearbox ECU that could be faulty. Please help?? its a 1991 LS400.
  4. Bought it privately from a lovely guy that had obviously taken care of it. It is immaculate inside and out, has a full lexus service history upto 150,000 miles. Is now due a B service at its current 156,000 miles. the guy even changed the timing belt and power steering pump just before he sold it. Rang him and he said he had never had a problem, and i believe him. He even rang his mechanic and got back to me with suggestions as to what it might be. Anyway i topped up the power steering fluid and the power steering seems better (although not silent, and i think its not as light as it was before). Amazing thing is is that the power seems to be back- the car feels fast again! HOW?? Someone please explain??
  5. Bought a 1991 LS400 yesterday. Today took it for a drive- all quiet smooth and fast. Took it out this evening to show friend how quiet smooth and fast it was. And it wasnt. It was noisy and slow. started it up and turned the steering wheel, and it made a really loud humming noise. The steering wheel still seemed nice and light, but was very noisy when i turned it, and was making a steady quiet humming when it wasnt being turned. Anyway, pulled out of the drive and thought i would put my foot down hoping the higher engine speed would make a difference, and there seemed to be no power. Engine still quiet and smooth but it was like putting your foot down in 5th gear at 40mph in a manual. It picked up very slowly. HELP! please dont tell me the car is dying already. ps its had a recently new power steering pump.
  6. Who are Chris and Martin the (the soarer boys)? im just outside sutton and could really do with contacting them. Any contact details?
  7. Thanks for the warm welcome and advice guys. From a reliability point of view and repair cost point of view, is one better than the other?
  8. Hi All, I am after my first lexus and im a bit daunted by all the expensive technology that can go wrong. Ive driven both (both mk1 models), and am very impressed. have been leaning towards the GS because it felt a little more sporty whilst still having excellent levels of comfort. Which one would make the best 'first' lexus? Is either one more reliable and less expensive to fix than the other? (assuming they are both good well looked after cars). Although i prefer the GS would also be happy with an LS. The reliabilty and ease/cost of fixing is my main concern with which one to get.
