  1. I thought that at first, but don't think that's the problem based on the comments he's made after that sentence......think it should have said "won't turn over" Hopefully he can clarify though :) My thanks to all who replied! Problem solved.. and the winner is..Rob!! Turned out that a pin had come loose in the lock barrel causing the lock to be stuck in the accessory position which means that the immobiliser/remote become inactive. Green flag garage in Aylesbury who towed the car (ouch.. a Lexus being towed..) picked it up quickly. Repair was with a barrel so saving was good. Thanks again for contributions. May the following winds of good fortune never blow your tyre smoke in your window..
  2. I bought these pads for my IS200 - are working fine. One calliper played up for a while before settling down and I was considering this supplier. No idea of quality though they are I believe they're refurbs. http://www.brakepartssuperstore.org.uk/con...n-uk/d7813.html
  3. Thanks for this! Thought the same. Battery terminal connections OK and all(?) electrics not going via the ignition seem to work fine?
  4. Another plea to the gurus if they'e around? Took my beloved X Reg IS200 for it's MOT this evening. Of course it sailed through. Paid the man his money and the car was driven round to the front for me to collect. Received the keys, jumped in, key in the ignition - won't turn! Several attempts - nope - check remote functions - key lights up - no familiar clunking from the locks, no hazard lights flashing. Tried several combinations - zilch. Great -a new MOT with a car that's going nowhere. Hoped faulty key? Called in the wife as reinforcements (her in her happily running Picanto - ouch!) but with my service key (with a new battery) on her key set. Tried it -zilch!! So thinking ECU, immobilisor interlock? Any suggestions - apart from matches, petrol... Sincerely appreciated - though I know the humour that heading my way...
  5. Seems pretty steep? Is a Lexus agent doing the job? If not what is the source of your spares? And "Calliper Pump"? What's that? Never heard of of one of those in forty years of being in engineering? Is it the name for the mechanism that allows the calliper to float? Or did I just learn a strange form of English in South Africa? I'd shop around for quotes first. Also consider signing up for Gold LOC membership which entitles you to some servicing / spares discounts - on £600 it could be worth it.
  6. It's the brakes - no doubt about it! Your fuel consumption will have gone up at least 10% as well just to make things worse. It will come and go as the calliper seizes and releases. When the vibration is at its worst, pull over - if safe to do so - and feel each wheel with the back of your hand (so as not to transfer dirt to inside the car). If you haven't done any really serious braking in the previous few minutes wheels SHOULD all be cool to the touch. One probably isn't. That's the culprit! With the calliper off the disk, (preferably not at the side of the road where you stopped!?) working it back and forth over almost its full stroke length can help. A touch of non-silicone lubricant can also help. I've done this twice in 18000 miles but am considering stripping and relacing the seals when it happens again - which I'm sure it will as it appears to be a Lexus weakness. Good luck!
  7. I doubt if it is the slider mechanism - It's pretty simple and unlikely to go wrong. More likely to be the pistons sticking in the caliper cylinders. The calipers slide off the pads (after removing the lower bolt and loosening the upper bolt a smidge). With the cap loosened on the master cylinder reservoir, the pistons may be pushed back into into the cylinders. The brake fluid level goes up slightly though it should be OK as it's a closed system. I've used a G-Clamp and a small block of wood as a packer to do this. I've had both lower pistons (at different times and possibly more prone to water?) become very tight causing dragging of the pads on the disk. A couple of tiny sprays of lubricant under the piston rubber boot and a some repetative movement of the piston in and out of the cylinder solved it. Been fine for over six months now. Fuel consumption also improved. Went up from low 20s to about 33!! My wheels run cold now - whereas before I could have fried a few rashers of bacon on them!
  8. Me neither. The car has been inspected by a specialist who buys and sells Lexus's/Lexi/ what the f.... is the plural for Lexus??2 He tells me that the engine is in tip top condition and that the car all-round is a great example and in mint condition. I'm getting a bit over 30mpg from my 2001 X-reg auto on a mix of country roads and some traffic. However during two episodes of a dragging front brake caliper this average dropped to nearly 20mpg. I now have the habit of checking that the fuel consumption gauge goes up to about 70mpg on a slight downhill with my foot off the accelerator and touching the back of my hand on the front rims after a short run to confirm brakes aren't dragging. When the brakes were dragging I only managed about 35mpg on a slight DOWNHILL cause I couldn't lift my foot off the loud pedal without slowing down unless driving down a mountain!!! I also treat myself to the respectable acceleration available when really needed and try to drive with a lighter foot - ~35mpg at 50/60 mph most of the time. Get 360miles on about 80% of tank! Moral of story - check the brakes!
  9. I think it was increased from 3 years to 5 years, so If your car is any older than 2002 it won't be covered now. you are right, got a call today, but I forgot to say that Its already a ex unit. I wonder If that changes the warranty Had the same problem - Error 1 with the occasional CD playing. Popped in CD head cleaner and all my troubles were over - player worked perfectly - for about a week. Then it failed two spit out two original "Clannad" CDs, told me only there was only one CD inside, made nasty clunking noises and then displayed the dreaded Error3. Since then - about two months ago - nothing has changed! X reg so way beyond warranty. Considered a matches or hammer solution then capitulated and changed to playing tapes - a bit Third World!
  10. Remember pedestrians and less movable objects (or movable objects like a granny handbag striking the grill of a hooting, barely stationary merc at a pedestrian crossing - you've seen the clip no doubt!) create excessive costs by setting off the airbags that then need to be recharged! I believe this may cost a couple of k£?
  11. Can you clarify "vibration"? If the disk has been fitted with dirt or whatever trapped between its location face and wheel hub then this will usually give a vibration in synch with each revolution of the wheel - about every 2m or so of road distance travelled! If the caliper or pad has not been fitted aligned with the disc this may set up a faster vibration - a wedge/loosen scenario similar to what you get when you push you finger across a smooth dry surface. If it's the latter the pads may bed in - if it's the disc fitting - don't hold your breath while waiting for things to get better! Hope this helps?
  12. that is what your problem is Just had a similar problem with my X Reg IS200. Has been making a faint "tweet tweet" noise (not enough to get Sylvester going!) for a couple of weeks which I put down to the pads not being pulled clear of the discs. Fuel consumption has also been rising both in town and on motorways. This morning the squeak became a continuous metal on metal screech demanding attention!! With thinngs going all festive could only get front pads at a premium price at a local auto shop - don't ask the price - embarrasing - but they were Ferodo and a 200 mile trip is planned for Monday! The "Front Pad change" in the knowledge base was brilliant! Keep up this good work. Results - Front right wheel was difficult to turn once jacked up - really stiff. Must have been heating up and never noticed it - also increasing fuel consumption? Once caliper off - float was Ok but upper piston very tight in caliper - lower OK. Once pushed back in (G-Clamp across Piston / caliper) appeared to be better - rust? Screech was vibrating sheet metal "wear limit finger" rubbing on disc. Right front pad exchange took 40 minutes. Checked left front - wear was less - also difficult to turn wheel - upper piston tight again loosened on being pushed in. Pad exchange time 25 minutes. Car now "creeps" when in "D" - never did before! Will feed back on fuel consumption - if any change! Pete
  13. Hi - I'm new to the forum? Have you checked the voltage getting to the relay? A bad cable, corroded connection or a bad earth connection could drop the voltage which is likely to make the relay unhappy.
