  1. The body ECU seems to be a common factor. I have read about the engine ECU capacitor problem and am wondering if the body ECU has a similar issue. Does anyone know where the body ecu is located on a mk4? Ian
  2. Thanks for the suggestion. If I do a full code read, the only one that comes up that does not clear is to do with one of the O2 sensors. When the codes are there the car starts and drives fine, as long as you don't want to open a window, move the steering wheel, use the central locking or adjust the mirrors. Oddly, even though it is reporting a fault, the sunroof works fine. I'm wondering if there is some kind of earthing issue or a corroded connector and the voltage drop caused by starting the engine is enough to trigger the faults. Ian
  3. Thanks for the code list. What is confusing me is the fact the codes only appear at engine start. Once the codes are there the systems do not work until the codes are cleared. If I turn on the ignition but do not start the engine and then clear the codes then all the systems work fine. If then turn the ignition off and turn it back on but again do not start the engine then all the systems are fine. As soon as I actually start the engine the codes appear and the systems stop working. Ian
  4. Hi, Can somebody please help me with some odd electrical problems my LS400 is having? The car was left standing for a couple of months and the battery drained. I removed the battery and charged it. When I refitted the battery the car started fine but a lot of electrical items did not work. The drivers window works but none of the others do, the electric mirrors don't work, central locking does not work - remote or in car button and the steering tilt \ reach does not work. I did some internet searching and the general recommendation seemed to be reset by leaving battery disconnected or replace the battery. I replaced the battery. All seemed to work until I started the engine when all the faults returned. I have a code reader and it is generating B1211, B1212, B1213, B1214, B1216, B1217, B1272 and B1273. Most of these seem to be communication failure related. Now for the odd bit. If I clear the codes then everything works again until the engine is started then the same faults occur. This cycle can be repeated over and over. The alternator is outputting 14.2v. I am at a loss as to where to look, has anyone come across anything like this before? Thanks Ian
  5. Mine is just a couple of gauges and a light, not a big scale shut down. I will put a voltmeter in the car and see if the gauges failing is related to the alternator stopping \ reducing charging. I would have thought this would have prompted a warning light or message though.
  6. Hi, My LS has developed an intermittant dashboard fault. The engine temp gauge drops to minimum, the gear indicator goes out, the average mpg figure at the bottom goes to 0.0 and the outside temp reads - -. The fuel gauge, speedo and tacho all remain working. This lasts for a few seconds and then everything returns to normal. I have read about dash faults on Mk2s. Does a similar thing happen to Mk4s? Does anyone have a clue as to what links all these readings? The odd one for me is the outside temp because that is in a seperate area, or is it linked to the dash? Thanks Ian
  7. Hi, I have a Mk 4 LS400. When I bought it the standard 16" alloys were very badly corroded. I fitted some 17" IS250 alloys which in my opinion look loads better than the standard LS wheels. However they have had a detremental effect on the ride so I am looking to go back to 16" wheels. I know front caliper clearance is very tight with 16" wheels so my question is which Lexus 16" wheels fit the LS? I like the look of 6 spoke IS200 and 5 spoke GS300 ones, will these fit? Thanks Ian
  8. I have a '98 mk4 LS400 and have fitted 10 spoke 17" IS250 wheels without any issues. Ian
  9. Having just changed my '98 upper front arms I can say the picture in the auction looks very different to the original arms. Both the shape, the originals are much more curved, and colour, the originals are black.
  10. Dragging this one from the past. Did you remove the hub, drive shaft, exhaust etc. as per the manual or is there an easier way? Am I correct in thinking the mk3 is identical to the mk4 for this job? Thanks.
  11. Thanks for your replies. Work begins this weekend. Ian.
  12. Thanks for the replies. I have changed plans and gone for aftermarket wheels. Ian
  13. I am replacing the whole arm. Do you know if the torque settings are the same as the front? Ian
  14. Thanks for your reply. I will check my LS wheels for offset tomorrow. Can anyone confirm the offset of this style of GS300 16" wheel? Ian
  15. Hi, Can anyone please tell me if 7 spoke alloy wheels from a 96 GS300 will fit a 98 LS400? Are the offsets the same? Thanks in advance Ian
  16. Hi, I am going to replace the upper rear ball joints and front tie bars on my mk4 LS400. I have seen the write up on lexls.com for the upper front joints, are the rears similar? Are the torque settings the same? Does anyone know the torque settings for the front tie bars? I have tried signing up to Toyota TIS to get the relevant workshop manual bits but it needs a US address. Thanks in advance Ian
  17. Hi !! I have just bought a Mk4 LS400 and thought I would introduce myself. It is a 1998 with 152K and full history. Very impressed so far. It has a few issues - corroded wheels, play in rear ball joints and the drivers side temperature display does not light up at night!!! Nothing too serious. Looking forward to years of trouble free motoring !!! Ian
