  1. Sounds like the filter screen on the rack is blocked and when you clean it they can be problematic to bleed. Cheap job but time consuming. Plenty of posts about it on here.
  2. If it's the alternator make sure it is completely dry. Any damp oil points to the power steering pump reservoir O ring which is the main cause of alternator failure on these cars. It's a £2 fix if you DIY.
  3. The garage has got that one wrong. Ten bob says you'll get a phone call before he's finished the job.
  4. Can only comment on the timing belt. First of all a car that age does not justify Lexus garage but I would use oem parts as well as water pump and idler. If it breaks it won't do any damage so don't fret over it going past the recommended mileage.
  5. Putting the jump leads wrong way gives you 24v instead of 12v. Fingers crossed there shouldn't be much damage apart from fuses.
  6. These cars are noted for being very fussy over transmission oil. You must use Toyota type 4, nothing else will do. You need to completely get rid of that old oil before progessing further.
  7. I looked for over 6 months and got 93 in apr 07 on ebay. It is as near mint as you'd expect for the year with under 100k so they are about. I'd be more inclined to not rule out a 93/94 and pay a bit over the odds. I paid £2500 so you should get one. History is very important, even if it's DIY. Keep looking you will find one. With petrol what it is they will soon appear. Actually there is a stack on ebay at the mo, personally I'd stay away from dealers and get one from an enthusiast.
  8. I have some rev sensors but ain't put them on yet. You will have to take the bumper off fpr sure. Not a difficult job but will need a helper.
  9. Checkout this link where I posted several replies and you'll get all the info you need. http://www.lexusownersclub.co.uk/forum/ind...mp;#entry495830 If you stand at the front of the car the air intake is at the front left. The maf sensor is half way along the big air intake pipe and it has wires going to it.
  10. I know it's tight to get the res off but I managed mine okay. Just needed wife to use her little fingers to get the bolts back in. All told it took just over an hour including taking off the air intake and maf sensor. I did not take off any pullies or the whole pump.
  11. A 98 is different from the earlier ones so 97 and earlier is no good try this link and ask if he has yours in stock. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/LEXUS-LS400-PASSENGE...Q2em118Q2el1247
  12. Your problem certainly seems to be the power stering pump Oring and it's an easy fix costing £2. Lots of posts on the various LS boards. Keywords for searching are alternator or Power steering pump
  13. I am in Benidorm, Spain and my nearest dealer is Alicante. I get the same treatment. Nothing is too much for them. Also I have bought a few things there and never found anything to be over the top pricewise. Last thing I bought was an O ring at €1.79 (about £1.35) and with that came the coffee and biscuits and a phone call to tell me the part was in the following day. Lexus Alicante obviously value their customers. Well done Lexus!
  14. Bet you wish you had found this car years ago. I've had 2 people sold on Mercs drive my 400 and they are both amazed why there are not more of them.
  15. He is indeed talking about the trunk that lifts up. Standing at the rear, the left side hinge carries the wiring loom he is talking about. It has been known to cause some weird electrical problems.
  16. If your engine starts suffering from the drive slowly syndrome it will be many tens of thousands of miles before there is anything noticable, if at all. The tyre needs repairing a.s.a.p. If it goes flat the end of the nail could damage the wall by being driven flat.
  17. Glad you sorted it Neo. Hate to say it but the first reply to your last thread said air in it for sure. I TOLD YOU SO. There, I said it. It is amazing how hard it is to get the air out but at the end of the day it costs nowt except time. You done yourself a favour by welding up the acv. Give us an update in a week or so.
  18. If you want to plug it here goes. The item you replace is difficult to get at, it's the bit that has 2 pipes running to it at the bottom of the pump. You replace it with at standard oil drain plug which is 14mm X 1.5 thread. Use PTFE tape on the plug. Having said that I think you should just doing the flush & bleed for now. I find it inconcievable that it's a bad pump. Trust me!
  19. Okay Neo get your drift. It is hard to believe that it might just be air. I find it harder to believe that a new pump is faulty. As for the ACV I think that dampens the steering at high revs. Most members agree that for what it does it can be dispensed with without any noticable effect. I've an idea on the solinoid but not too sure so I'll leave that for someone else. One thing for sure is that bleeding will cost you nowt and I am VERY confident it will cure it. Just one question. When you had new pump fitted was that with a new reservoir, usually the res is not included. If not you could be suffering from a blocked reservoir filter. This would cause the pump to malfunction until the pressure built up in the system (higher revs) thus forcing fluid through the blocked filter but lower revs would not give enough pressure to pass the blockage. Hope you get it sorted soon. If you want to remove the res you'll need a new O ring and I've posted plenty on here and other forums about the procedure. It's an easy job and a couple of hours is allowing time for a brew.
  20. You still have air in it, simple as that. These cars are very difficult to get all the air out. Best way is jack up the front. Sit next to a front wheel and move it full length to the left and then the right. Make sure the filler cap is off and don't let it run out of gluid. Repeat at least 50 times.
  21. Here in Spain most policies including TPTF covers any driver in your car but you are not covered in any other car.
  22. Davepruce you seem to have the answer. I don't have remote keys, only an auxillary after market remote fob so I've never heard the beeps. Thanks for that.
  23. Anybody tell me what's the switch above my right foot near the footwell light. It looks like a dimmer but don't seem to do anything. Before you say look in the book I haven't got one.
