  2. I have similar squeaking when idling. Am just gonna leave it for now! Its not a squeel though, like when the fanbelt gets worn.
  3. could be that the block of ice you drove over has knocked against the shield thingy behind parts of the brake disc. If you whip the wheel off you will see the shield. Make sure its not touching the disc in anyway.

  5. as said in post really. They are the 2 metal rods that go from one side of the underside of the parcel shelf to the other. In the boot, look to the underside of the shelf and you can't miss it.
  6. I guess people use them as a generic term these days. i.e. hydraulic tappets, when it should mean something else (did someone mention buckets??!)
  7. Does anyone know if the headlight level adjuster (the little wheel thingy next to the fog light and front headlight squirter buttons) is supposed to light up when you have your headlights on? The other 2 switches there do, but on mine (2001 - X) the level adjustment one doesn't so wondered if its supposed to (can't remember it ever lighting up) or if the bulb has gone.
  8. You could leave a bit of kitchen towel or similar wrapped around the cable for the headlight relay. That way any water that does get down the harness will get soaked up. Dunno if it also makes it a fire risk, but mines been fine since.
  9. Mbay - yeah the boot lid is supposed to open up either half or full depending on the springs really. Though I notice that you have the rear spolier fitted so on those cars it will probably just pop up as the weight of the spoiler will keep it from going all the way. I think even the lip spoiler might stop it on some cars. The IS does not have adjustable springs on it, unlike the GS300 (mkII) which you can change the hole that the springs are set in to change the setting. Basically, you are not looking for actual springs, but long pieces of metal rod, x2, which sit under the parcel shelf (in the boot) by the centre speaker magent. Its these that provide the correct torsion movement for the boot.
  10. New batteries direct from lexus are not that expensive (the price might even surprise you!). They should last a fair while. If you want to go for another make, then I think you would be hard pushed to beat an Exide battery. They are amoungst the best.

My understanding was that he revision was not 100% you must, but the advised the mechanics to check the belt earlier as they had had issues with the idler wearing and causing the belt to move and wear on a cover or something, which shredded the belt. I think this only affected cars upto something like 2003 though.
  12. I have used ABM in the past - in Sydenham. A few others have too and they seem ok. I am not sure if they are as cheap as they used to be though, but they are all ex-Lexus/Toyota. ABM
  13. FWD cars are always easier to drive in the snow. More weight over the driving wheels than in a RWD car. The lex is very poor in the snow. Also turn TRC off as that will make it a little easier. Not quite sure I agree that a smaller (thinner) tyre will also have a longer contact area with the road than a wider tyre would - why is that that? If both 17" then wouldn't make a blind bit of difference.
  14. I was wondering if having a sticking caliper (say pins and piston) meaning that the car would pull to one side, mean that the front tyres would wear in an uneven manor? I ask as my fronts have worn more on the OS front inner than the NS front has and apart from the many roundabouts where I live, I did have a sticking caliper for a while, which meant I had to steer off line a bit. Just wondering if this could attribute to the uneven wear?
  15. That sounds ok then. I am toying between the Maxx and the Maxx TT but the TT's are £15 more each so over 4 tyres is £60 extra!! Not sure if they are worth that, so might just get the Maxx's. Only issue is if I get a puncture then getting a single one in a year or so might be hard as they are stopping them too!! But, at the moment I have to watch the cash so probably the Maxx it will be - best price I can find is £92.99 fully fitted.
  16. According to Dunlop, the IS200 has a natural tendancy to pull to the left. The design of the lexus version of the SP9000 Sport (as well as having different compound and stiffer sidewall) was to correct this a bit. Apparently the SP3000 is similar in this respect but used the Avensis as a development platform. Now, I dunno exactly how true this is, but have no reason to question the Dunlop tech guy, especially as they no longer have a direct replacement tyre for the SP9000 Lexus. I thought I would pose the question though, especially to see what experts such as Tony thought. What is the real effect of going away from OE tyres, does it matter in any way or what??

  18. I do 36 and 38 I think and not had any problems, especially at the rear. There is a sticker in the drivers door area when open. I doubt lexus would have got it wrong, but you never know. lower profile tyres will have a higher pressure, though i guess some of it depends on the tyre too - what you fitted?

  20. I have a question which I was hoping that someone on here (maybe Tony WIM) might be able to answer. Seeing as how a lot of IS's are affected by the dreaded early inner tyre wear, I was wondering if this could in part be related to tyre type? I personally get around 30k+ from a set of tyres, and although the front inners do wear a bit quicker than the rest, that sort of mileage is acceptable. I have always had on Dunlops SP9000 Sport Lexus version tyres which were an OE fit tyre. So, I am wondering, how many people have experienced rapid inner tyre wear when using OE tyres and if its not as many, then could the inner tyre wear be in part down to the use of non OE tyres that were no developed for the IS chassis setup? How would a less stiff tyre wall and possible non correction of the IS chassis setup to naturally drift slightly to the left affect the wear of tyres which haven't been developed for the IS? Just a thought as trying to pick the right replacement tyres for my car and although I know lots of people have commented on WIMs new alignment settings, I have never had a problem with the standard Lexus settings, so would be more than annoyed if changed the settings and got worse performance/lifespan! Therefore, got to thinking that maybe those who see the best benefit are when you use non OE spec/developed tyres with WIMs new settings.
  21. I think the L (or possible listed as XL) means extra loading?? Those tyres are a Y rating as well I believe, not Z - not that that might make any difference.

  23. Ah, didn't know they did a Lexus version of the Sport Maxx - will check that out. Tech bloke didn't mention it! Tony - interesting that your bridgestones only did around 7-10k! thats not good.

Thats really common - sometimes shadey characters put little slips of plastic in with a card reader to get your details and have a micro camera or something near by to get your pin, then you nick all your cash from a cloned card! A google search should pull up loads of info on this. Look for something like ATM/cash machine tampering or card cloning. Keep an eye on your balance for a while just incase. I am surprised the bank staff didn't know about this, unless they checked the machine.
  25. Yeah its the OEM tyre. Interesting as I thought the V tread pattern was supposed to be noisier (or was that quieter!)? Umm, still thinking then..... arse.
