  1. Auto is definitely better on this car. Personally I would have held out for an MM version though - I can't do without the reversing camera now!
  2. That doesn't sound right. With very gentle, or motorway, driving my 250 SE Auto gets 39 - 40mpg. With a normal combination of short commute runs and faster driving I get around 30. The only time I've got as low as 26 from a tankful was when it was all short runs/town driving/power button switched on :winky:
  3. The auto-unlocking when you put it in Park is a setting you can change yourself. Mine is set up so that it auto-locks at 12mph, but when you stop and put it in P all the doors unlock. Below is a thread from a US forum which might be of help: OK since you all wanted instructions and it isn't exactly torture for me to play with the new car here's a full proof way to do it Now I tested this by reverting my settings back to default which is basically doing all the steps again. Flip to P.19 on the manual. What they fail to say there is you have to turn defualt options off, kinda cumbersome but basically if you perform the operation to say 'lock doors @ 12mph' the factory defualt option of 'lock doors when shifting out of park' is not overwritten you will have both options ON but the shifting rule precedes the MPH rule. To fulfill the original request of: Doors DO NOT lock when shifting out of park Doors DO NOT unlock when shifting in to park Doors DO lock @ 12mph Doors DO unlock all if drivers side opened within 10secs / unlock drivers only after 10secs. Put car in to IG-ON hold unlock button & count to 5 - doors will lock/unlock to confirm Shutdown Put car in to IG-ON hold lock button & count to 5 - doors will lock/unlock to confirm Shutdown --Now at this point you have disabled the factory default and the doors will have to be manually locked/unlocked-- Put car in to IG-ON SHIFT to N hold unlock button & count to 5 - doors will lock/unlock to confirm Shutdown (STAY IN N) hold lock button & count to 5 - doors will lock/unlock to confirm Shutdown --Now you have placed the new ruleset and you are good to go, now the last 2 steps above can be skipped for the drivers that want complete control over their lock functions but it seems that the majority of us in this thread like the MPH lock option as well as the Driver/ALL unlock option-- If you have your manual while reading this you will notice I basically went down the list of available options. My first problem and I assume what others report was also troublesome was there was no mention that you had to turn the first two options off beofore turning the last two on.
  4. Mine doesn't need constant correction to keep it straight - it's absolutely spot-on, in fact one of the best cars I've had for that.
  5. The lack of folding seats may be a problem if this is your only car. Personally, I prefer to have a saloon without folding seats, for reasons of rigidity. Also, there's no way I would want a load of IKEA or B&Q boxes anywhere near my cream leather interior. Luckily for me, my wife's got a Scenic so that acts as load-carrier for trips to the dump and DIY stores. :winky:
  6. The Lexus dealers obviously must vary a lot in quality. My own experience (Lexus Bracknell) was that this was my best dealer experience in over 30 years of motoring. I couldn't fault their sales service and would most definitely use them again. The handover experience when I picked up my car was excellent - even though I was buying from the cheapest end of the range I felt like I was treated as an LS buyer! The followup from them to check I was happy with the car was also excellent.
  7. Yes and no. Yes I am part 'exing it and no I didn't get a good price for it!!! £5100 which is rubbish but then it is an 05/05 base model with 4 previous owners and a few scuffs here and there. I could have got a few hundred pounds extra but I'm sick of trying and failing to sell privately. Also, What Car reckons that the S80 2.4D SE on an 07 plate should be £14025 at a dealer. Mine has the following additional options extra: electric sunroof, full leather, winter pack, upgraded premium stereo, heated seats metallic paint etc. With all the optional extras at the main dealer I paid £13331 for it which I think is exceptional value for money. All together it cost £32000 new and it's 14 months old and has lost £19000!!! Ps if anyone else is thinking of it, there's loads of these S80's around for around the £12800 mark for a 56 plate. So no, I didn't get a good price for my IS but I made up for it with a good price on the S80. I would be quite pleased with that deal. AT the end of the day, all that matters is the 'cost to change' rather than the specific p/ex value or cost of the new car. Whenever I buy a car from a dealer and consider p/ex I always talk about cost to change, and it's the language they understand. You may have got very little for your Lexus but it sounds like you've got a lot of new car for your money, so well done!
  8. Good choice! No tips from me I'm afraid as I'm still getting used to mine.
  9. The 'auto-locking releasing the other doors when exiting' setting can be changed. The dealer can do it, or you can try it yourself. IIRC you can have it so that engaging Park unlocks all the doors (that's how mine is set I think), or opening the drivers door unlocks all the other doors. I agree with you about the lack of 7-digit postcodes on the sat-nav - that's a bit of a shame. You can dial out on your phone while on the move so long as the number is one of your speed-dials.
  10. The CBT is only a few hours of instruction so it doesn't teach you to ride properly. The reason it came in was that previously anyone could put on a set of L plates and take a bike out on the public road, with no supervision and absolutley no idea about the rules of the road or how the controls work. Unlike in a car where you have to be accompanied by an experienced driver. The CBT only really gets you to the point where you can reasonably safely start to learn properly. I found that learning to ride a bike, with proper tuition, made me a better car driver too.
  11. ] Not if you worried about fuel consumption! Or oil consumption OK here are the facts. My previous car was a Mazda RX-8 231 so I speak from first-hand experience. My overall average fuel consumption over 4 years was 17mpg (mostly 5 mile commuting). The best I ever got on a long run was 23mpg. Although this sounds pretty terrible it's not that much different from other similar performance cars. However CO2 output is high so the road tax next year will be £440. As for oil consumption, yes it's higher than most other cars but that's because a rotary engine injects small amounts of oil onto the rotor tips and this gets burnt off. Once the engine is run in, average oil consumption is about 1 litre per 2000 miles. Again not brilliant, but there are plenty of piston engine cars around that use as much oil. As far as it being a womans car, the vast majority of owners are men. I love my Lexus IS250 but I do miss the RX-8's performance and handling particularly. :winky:
  12. According to Parker's guide the IS250 Auto will be £300 next year (band K) and £310 in 2010. The IS250 Manual will be £415 next year (band L) and £430 from 2010. The IS220D will be £175 next year (band H) and £180 from 2010. So an IS250 Auto will cost £125 more than an IS220D to tax next year - which equates to 34p per day extra. In my opinion the smoothness of the auto makes this extra cost worthwhile.
  13. Admittedly BMW are doing a good job getting emissions down, although they use a number of tricks to do it like stop/start systems (which don't always work) and disconnecting alternators. But you have to keep things in perspective. A Lexus 220D may cost £50 a year more to tax than a BMW 320D, but that only adds up to £150 over 3 years, and that saving will easily be wiped out by the higher cost of buying the BMW, especially once you add the expensive options. Before I bought my IS250 I took a long look at a BMW 325i and it would have been significantly more expensive for the same features. I'm sure that Lexus and all the rest will follow BMW's lead in reducing emissions just to keep them competitive though.
  14. The automatic IS250 will be cheaper to tax than the manual version as it has a lower CO2 rating.
  15. On my car (March 2008) the auto doorlocking can be set by the owner. It's described in the manual. I don't know about older modesl though.
  16. Any update on this? I see that the Vaistech SL2Vi is now available for IS250 and I'm quite interested. It supports 5th gen iPods including video. Has anyone got any experience of fitting/using one?
  17. Sorry I don't know the answer off the top of my head but I had a similar problem which I haven't resolved yet. I managed to transfer all my contacts from my Sony K610i into the nav system. However I then wanted to transfer all the contacts from my work Blackberry 8800 and had similar problems with the phone disconnecting the Bluetooth connection. I would be very interested in the answer to this.
  18. I really enjoy the entertainment bits of Top Gear such as the £900 Police cars last weekend. But I must admit the reviews done by Clarkson and the other 2 are a bit tedious and overdone. They seem to be designed to show how clever Clarkson is all the time. And by the way, in the not-too-distant past Clarkson said in his Times column that no-one who has an interest in cars would buy a Lexus, and that they're just for people who want 4 wheels. See the conclusion at the end of his column here - Clarkson review of IS250. And James May should realise that at his age, hair hanging in front of his face looks frankly embarassing.
  19. Where can you get the Flash filters these days? They used to be sold in Halfords but I haven't seen any for ages.
  20. Thanks everyone for the advice and welcome messages :)
  21. OK, I just checked the offer letter at home, and it's for the following: Number of services covered: 3 Starting at: 10,000 ml / 1 yr for an IS250 Automatic. I was told by the dealer that the deal covers labour and normal service parts (which presumably must include oil), but not other wear and tear items like brake pads etc (which seems reasonable). Given that my average mileage is less than 10000 per year I'll be getting it serviced every 12 months. I was told that the first and third service are 'intermediate' (presumably mainly an oil and filter change) and the second one is a full service. I got the cost slightly wrong - it's actually £594 including VAT. This still sounds like a good deal to me, however I'll speak to the salesman when he's back next week and double-check the fine print about fluids etc. Thanks for the replies
  22. Thanks all! By the way I should have mentioned that the pre-pay service deal I have been offered can either be paid for up-front or over 27 months on 0% interest. It's also fully transferable to a new owner if I sell the car, and most importantly it's fully refundable if for example I move away from the area. So the only question really is - how much do the 1st, 2nd and 3rd services normally cost typically in Southern England? Thanks for any advice you can offer.
  23. I'm pretty sure they said it was for 3 services, I'll check the letter when I get home. Would that be a good price for 3 services?
  24. Hi everyone, just got my first Lexus, a nearly new 2008 IS 250 SE auto with Multimedia, in Cadoxton Slate with Oakham Beighe interior. Very pleased so far, and quite a change from the Mazda RX-8 I had before! I have a question already. The dealer has offered me a pre-paid service package for the first 3 years at a total of £574 inc VAT. Is that good value for the first 3 services? Cheers!
