  1. Thanks for that Chris. Reasuring to know that they dont pack up all together. I was thinking of WD40 on the motor and greesing the channels but im alway reluctant to remove the door cards as they usually end up a bit on the loose side afterwards.
  2. Both front windows and both rear windows used to go down and up at the same rate; which is always nice i think. But the pasenger 1 is getting very slow and if its dropped right down, it makes a scraping sound on the way up. not all the way up. From about 4" to 6". I was wondering if others had experienced this problem and found a cure. It bothers me that i might drop the window and not be able to close it.
  3. thanks for that. appreciate the response. personally i cannot see there being a problem. If a 65 is 5mm bigger than a 60 and the 65 is already part worm then i dont think they will be that much bigger. cheers.
  4. The old girl needs new tyres but times are hard. I have a set of 215/65/16 that have loads of tread. Im thinking that the only difference in diameter is 5mm; is that right? and are there any other problems i havent thought of.
  5. Some of teh members on here have had some serious cars. Make my list very dull. (Single) Mini 1275GT; loved it Mini 1275GT; loved it and modded for extra (haha) power. (met the wife) Chrysler Sunbeam 1.3 Auto; extremely good car. Tolbot Rancho; loved it but the bl**dy thing never stopped rusting. Vauxhal Astra mk1; front callipers always siezing. Sherpa Van 1.8 Deisel; fond memories. Montego 2.0 D; what a pile of..... Nother Sherpa Van 1.9D; never learn! Volvo 440i; dull Mitsubishi Carisma 1.8GDI; 43mpg but i should have soued them over the name. Fiat Punto; made from tin foil. Mitsubishi Shogun Pinin; serious off road ability (miles better than the Discovery that followed. Merc c200 coupe (new); not as good as it should have been. Landrover Discovery 300TDI; like driving a jelly. very unreliably. Lexus LS400; still got her and by a mile the best car i have owned. Landrover Freelander; Massive pile if s**t. The worst car ever built. Rover 75 CDT Tourer; still got it and knowwhere near as bad as people make out. Had a few series 111 Landrover projects along the way. What an idiot.
  6. Oh come on. It isnt that bad. We have seen worse on here.......a lot worse. In some ways i think it looks quite smart.
  7. Quality job Steve. Looks really nice. If anyone wants to run into both front wings of my LS, crack the front screen and some how damage the leather on the steering wheel and gear shift, please be my guest. Ill gladly run it round to Steves mate for a similar makeover. Please dont touch the rear bumper though. It was new on only last year and is the nicest bit of the car.
  8. Hi Thunderchild, I stand corrected on the reason for the migration. Absolutely apalling treatment of the working classes I agree. Glad you liked the explaination in general though, which of course, is all sound scientific stuff. JW (proud to english working class) Bye thee ek! Now, where did i put that powdered water? Please also don't forget (and this is an important factor in your improving mpg).... there are far more people in the UK than a few years ago and so they are all using up valuable air when they breath. This means there is far less air around than there used to be so less wind resistance on your Lexus - thus ...more MPG !!! Simples. Brilliant! That gives me an idea. This is going to save you thousands in saved fuel Dave. Heres the plan. We have now established that, due to the new tilt of the earth, DaveB is driving down hill more than he used to and there is also an extra saving due to a reduction in wind resistance. (This is because an increase in population is breathing in more air). Why not sit loads of people on the bonnet of your Lexus when you go for a drive? That way, they will all be breathing, thus removing the air from directly in front of the car. This will all but remove the wind resistance all together. The people on the bonnet will also lift weight from the rear wheels thus reducing the wieght of the back of the car (a further saving). Dave, you will be driving around for free in no time mi old son. Why didnt i think of this before buying the Rover 75 CDT?

  10. dave, I think its down to the shift in the tilt of the earth. There is, as most of us know, true north and magnetic north (and a couple of other norths if you beleive what Stephen Fry tells us). The general explaination is that now so much scrap metal is being exported to europe in the form of "made in China" products, the magnetic north has shifted. Slightly to the left and down a bit. I dont know where your daily drive route is but its possible that you are now driving down hill a bit more. Its nothing to worry about. A simialr thing happened about 200 years ago during a migration of people form scotland moving south for work in the newly opened factories in the midlands and south of england. This resulted in the scottish highland rising slightly and south of england (mainly the south east) sinking a bit. I wouldnt worry about it Dave. Just drive around as much as you can so that you save as much as possible. Extra MPG means a saving at the pump. If you drive around enough you should able to save enough to buy a new Lexus. Any more financial questions, just ask. Yours jonathan IFA
  11. However, I'm in West Sussex, and there is another on this forum from West Sussex so it's not impossible..and we're all LS owners! Phil East Lahndahn any good? That young lady is going to hurt her neck doing that. And catch her death of cold! Any way, where in the lakes do you want to meet up? Is it time for all those interested in a Lakes meet up to pm one of us and leave mobile numbers so that we can arrange something?
  12. I was only thinging on wednesday that i meet would be a good idea. Im in south west cumbria or Lake district if you prefer. And im up for a meet so long as its daylight and not in the woods or in a laybye. Dont do that sort of thing!
  13. Get it crushed mate. Your on the slippery slope there my lad. Its a light bulb today and a 5 amp fuse tomorrow. You cant go on like that. Best to cut your losses before its too late. Failing that, get in touch with Lexus UK. Its a flippin disgrace. They should be meeting you half way repairs like this. Bout time they made a good will gesture. Why, only the other day i had to put more fuel in mine. The greedy car had used all the fresh petrol i put in last week. Cant go on mate, just cant go on!
  14. Thanks guys for all the help. The hand brake ajustment would have had me stumped. As for the rusty discs. Its not surface rust you get when parked up for a bit. The surface of the discs are quite deeply corroded in patches.
  15. Glad she made it! Rear discs not too bad, make sure you slacken the parking brake adjustment right off, so the disc pulls off clear of the shoes. Readjust when new discs on Woooooooooow! whats all this about slackening the hand brake off. Howd i do that?
  16. Thnaks for all the suggestions guys. As for the Metro; well, that was based on the mini and i was a bit of a mini nut back in the day but they were never the most reliable of cars. None of my 1275GTs were ever reliable from one week to the next never mind a year. Fantastic handling though.
  17. Thanks guys, No there are no codes or lights on. It is a bit flat around 1500/2000 though and a bit of a missfire up hills. Where are these sensors and cils and how do i check them guys? Im ok with the nuts and bolts but a bit of a dullard with the sparks.
  18. Manc, Go on youtube and search for, i think, deals on wheels. You should be able to find it by searching Lexus LS400 as well. On the program they bought an LS for £1500 and amongst other things changed the wheels for IS wheels. Personally i didnt like them but im just an old Worthers Original sucking fart who thinks that things were better in the old days.
  19. the old girl passed the MOT today with a couple of adviseries. Mainly tyres which i didnt want to change before knowing if id get some use from them if you know what i mean. Still a couple of issues though; 1 Battery went flat a week ago (car in garage unused too long) and now the steering wheel wont go in and out. Up and down yes, but not up and down. I think its fully out. When i press the little arm back i just get 2 click sounds. 2 Although it passed the brake test i still intend to change the rear discs because they are very badly corroded, even on the faces. Is it really just a matter of a couple of screws or is a big hammer needed? Happy days though on the whole. Another 12 months quality ownership.
  20. as some might already know, i dont get to drive the LS much. Wifie type person drives it. Out for a sunday drive yesterday, though, and the cats were stinking hot when we parked up after about 30 miles. We were taking it easy as well. It also smells like its over fueling, especially when started from cold. I replaced the disi caps and arms last year so dont think its that. Any suggestions to cure the over fueling that is probably causing the hot cats?
  21. I didnt take the arms off the car. I was onlyt replacing the buses at the rear end of the arm. Most of the rubber was gone from the bush anyway but what was left wasnt too difficult to cut out with a Knife. With the arm hanging down under the car i just used a hack saw blade to saw through the bush liner in the arm. When i was through that i just chiseled the bush out. Simple as that. The new bushes slid straight in. Bingo. As for the WD40; i might replace the upper wishbone and ball joints. Hence the WD40. If you are going to do this job; a little tip; dont try to undo the nut and bolt with an open end 19mm spanner. Use a 6 point socket and a ring spanner. The nut and bolt will have been on for 18 years now and like mine will be stuck fast. I dont like using a hammer to strike a spanner or T bar. I, very carfully, used a trolley jack to apply presure to the T bar and socket. "slowly slowly catchy monkey"
  22. I dont drive the LS much these days. Too expensive with my weekly mileage so i dont know how long its been doing this (Wifie type person says she hasnt heard anything) But i took it for a test drive after fitting new rear trailing arm bushes and the belt is twittering. Im wordering weather its the belt or the alternator. The alternator is less than 2 years old so should be ok.
  23. Nice one Steve. Brilliant but for one flaw; i have never had enough money to leave my wife in a pub all day unsupervised.
  24. Bazgtr, thanks for that. Heres the update; the new bushes arrived within 24 hours of placing the order by phone. I was only doing the rear end bush and hadnt read Baz`s post about removing the arm and replacing both ends. So i followed the proceedure on the Lexls.com. The rubber had all gone from the old bushes, NS and OS, so all i had to do was saw through the metal sleave or liner and chisel it out. That was the only difficult bit. The new bushes went on a dream. The cars tendency to wobble about on corners and poor road surfaces has gone. Its now well planted and handles as it should so im well chuffed. As for the brake gudder; thats not 100% cured. But its bearable. The rear discs are well shot at. Not only are they very worn and corrided around the edges but the surfaces are also breaking up. As in, there are a couple of patches where the surface is hollow and rough. If it gets through the MOT without failing on the rear upper ball joints ill fit new discs. I dont think its worth paying out £100+ for 2 new discs only for the car to fail the MOT a week later and not be worth reparing.
  25. My wife says that i love the dog more than i love her which is ridiculous because i love my Lexus more than i love the dog. Problem is, the Lexus needs fixing for the MOT. She drinks more than the Lexus though! What to do? Fix the Lexus, Walk the dog or go to the pub with the wife?
