  1. A mistake, I fear. The brand isn't well enough established to get away with this. IS250 is too expensive (especially in SE trim) and too slow. Charging the same for a 4 cyl diesel as a 6 cyl petrol is taking the p***. I may instead get myself a used 330i or X-Type 3.0.
  2. Not happy re. engine choice. 2.5l V6 likely to have v high emissions and hence company car tax. Diesel will be OK for tax but is a diesel......
  3. "Looks like Lexus are missing something in their product range." Yep. There's a big gap from the IS200 to IS300. B*W, Audi and Merc all have far more engine options
  4. A few years ago Top Gear did a spoof "trial" of the IS200 with "witnesses" for and against (the against arguments focused on ERR3 CD problem, lack of torque and easily kerbed wheels). Does anyone know how this finished-up?
  5. I picked-up a cheap "Best of the BTCC 1991-2002" video the other day. Will post if there's good IS200/Altezza footage.
  6. Just got back from Florence and the rest of Tuscanny. I saw just one Lexus (IS200) the whole time we were there (and that was 'round the corner from a Toyota dealer)! What's going on? Is it the Italian obsession with noisy, dirty and slow diesel engines? By the way, we covered a fair few miles in a 1.6 petrol Focus. For a front drive, it was really quite good on the twisty stuff! Peter
  7. Go with the supercharger. A turbo gives more power the higher your revs and doesn't do a lot for you at lower revs. The boost from a supercharger is not related to revs. Given that it's at low revs the IS most lacks power, this is a no-brainer.
  8. I've got the Lexus sensors and they work well. Only downside is that you get two sets of bleeps (the other one is the standard reverse gear selected bleep).
  9. SMW, Age is more important than miles. A few '000 extra miles (especially on motorway) do no harm. Don't worry about ex-lease. If it's been badly abused, you'll probably able to tell. A minor lack of TLC (e.g. infrequent washes) shouldn't do much harm. Don't worry about getting money off - focus instead on the price. Let's face it, a £15k used car with a £500 "discount " is still dearer than a £14k used car with no discount! Best of luck Peter
  10. New reports indicate that Chris Bangle* has been unfairly maligned. Due to an unfortunate typographical error in an internal memo, poor old Chris has been going all out to produce the "Ugliest Driving Machine"! * designer of the new 7 series, Compact and other beauties ;)
  11. On. I have a realistic view of my driving abilities (and it has got me out of jail twice). ;)
  12. SMW, Thanks for taking the trouble to post so much on the Yaris. I'll check-out the TOC site sometime. Hope you find the right IS200 and enjoy it. Peter
  13. My wife's getting a 1.3 Yaris (T Spirit) in a couple of weeks. I can recommend the Lex. Have we done the right thing with the Yaris?
  14. Honest John (a car dealer who writes in the Telegraph motoring bit on Saturdays) reckons: 4000 rpm max in first 1000 miles 5000 rpm max in second 1000 miles 6000 rpm max in third 1000 miles Also, don't labour the engine early in its life (i.e. too low revs) and try to vary your revs on long trips for the first 1-2,000 miles. Hope this helps Peter
  15. My wife has recently been converted to the usefulness of the rev counter and has started driving in lower gears with a resulting improvement in acceleration. I wondered how others drove with respect to refinement vs performance. I'm assuming a steady speed on the flat without major hazards. BTW I use 3rd normally.
  16. Dark, I think I know why you're not going as fast as you'd like: you have too many modifications with the initials "TDi" in them. Now we all know that anything with the initials TDi is noisy, dirty and slow. :P Good luck next time. Peter
  17. In any case, it's often best to wait a few months before buying a brand new model to avoid any glitches. (Of course this is less true if the model has been on sale in Japan for while.) I'm puzzled as to why they'd move from a straight 6 to a vibration-prone V6. Is it because they hope to mount the engine tranveresely in other models such as the Avensis or (shudder) Camry. A diesel (sadly) makes sense to break int Europe, but in the UK wouldn't a decent 4 cyl be a better compromise between smoothness, torque and low CO2 emissions (important in the co. car market)? Peter
  18. Coming soon to a motorway hard shoulder near you.... Peter
  19. I do use the tape player for spoken word tapes. However, the wind and low profile tyre roar is such that I have to set the volume control to 1 o'clock!
  20. Nice post, Tony. Concise and well explained!
  21. I too went from Avensis to IS200 and find the Lex VERY LOUD on the motorway. The engine isn't loud (unless revved hard) and the noise seems to be a combination of low profile tyre roar and wind noise (the latter gets much worse at about 80). Now the Avensis is a particularly quiet vehicle but I'm always surprised by people on the site saying the IS is quiet. Any thoughts?
  22. You asked about dealer-fit options. The one I had was the reversing radar: makes parking much easier (provided you don't drown it with the stereo. Mind you, a friend has an RX300 with radar. When it bleeped, she assumed that it had made a mistake as she couldn't see anything. Sadly, the concrete flower pot was stronger than the RX! :iraqi-info-minister:
  23. If they want to sell to business customers they'll need to reduce the CO2 emissions which determine company car tax. BMW and Mercedes have been working hard at this, although both provide 4cyl engines (emissions will always be higher in a small 6 cyl than a 4). Of course, reducing emissions needs to go hand-in-hand with some more low-down torque. (A diesel would provide both, but I HATE diesels.) Is there any reason why a rear drive car can't have folding rear seats? My (front drive) Avensis had folding rear seats even though it was a booted saloon.
