  1. No, it's very easy. I would safely say, half of the posts about the 220Ds on this forum are about the EGR valve and the cleaning of it! How to clean Dirty EGR Photos EGR Tips
  2. I brough my car in from the UK, hence the miles! Conversion chart, I hope it's correct! MPG L/100KM 20 14.1 22 12.8 24 11.8 26 10.9 28 10.1 30 9.4 32 8.8 34 8.3 36 7.8 38 7.4 40 7.1 42 6.7 44 6.4 46 6.1 48 5.9 50 5.7 52 5.4 54 5.2 56 5.0 58 4.9 60 4.7
  3. Yeah, I did improve the mileage. I can only talk in mpg, so I'll leave it to you to convert (I'm very lazy!). I cleaned the EGR valve (as I do every 5K miles) and I use Redex everytime I top up. I am now seeing an average of 41mpg per fuel tank. I got 530 miles out of a full tank last week. This is combined city, rural and motorway (equally split). I find that I can get 50ish mpg when driving at 50mph in 5th with the CC on. I even recorded 57.7mpg at one stage! I drive very gingerly, not slowly, but with low acceleration. I change up well below 2000rpm (probably around 1700-1800rpm. I do give the engine a good blow out at times just for peace of mind. I find 4th and 5th to be the best fuel consumption wise. 1st, 2nd, 3rd and especially 6th (waste of time unless doing over 75mph) obviously use plenty of fuel. Before I cleaned the EGR and started using Redex, I was getting 33-34mpg.
  4. Well jRoy, Here is a review of service that I posted a while ago. Very happy except for the issue with the paint. Haggle with them on price as well. Service review I went to Fitzpatricks in Naas. I think i will try Keary's in Cork next time and see what they say about the paint.
  5. Keep us posted on this. There were worries that the car would go into Limp Mode if you did this.
  6. Search back through the last six months of posts here. Someone was asking about the differences in the specs as well. With regards to your comments, beware, fuel consumption is an issue. You should expect anywhere between 34-38 mpg (combined). I have found that cleaning the EGR valve every ~4000miles and adding a fuel additive can move that figure into the early 40's. There is a nasty cracking/rattling in the dash but it doesn't bother me as much as it has others on this forum. It is not constant in my case. But i listen to music quite loud! I think if it is in warranty, Lexus may change the fixings to eliminate this (again, search back through the topics). On a positive note, I personally really like the car. I have the SE model. I think the leather & 17"s make a massive difference. I'm sure others may have different feelings than I do though. But don't be put off by everything you read here. After all, not many people come here to post about how great a car is, they will more than likely come on to complain.
  7. Thanks Ahmed. Nice photos. Looks like you gave the alloys a good clean while you had them off!
  8. Thanks for that Rory. Maybe I'll go with the black so. I can always change!
  9. Just looking for a few opinions on this. I am thinking of painting the calipers on my IS. The car itself is black and I have silver/light grey Lexus decals to go on. So, any suggestions as to what colour would look good. I have a tin of black Hammerite already but i think that is a waste of time and wouldn't be noticeable. Thanks.
  10. Thanks Steve. To be honest, I didn't bother because the supply in the centre console is working. I'll check it this evening.
  11. My cigarette lighter (power supply) is not working. It's the one directly below the radio. I use this for my sat nav and I need it working desparately! Has anyone had any problems with theirs or has anyone got any recommendations? Thanks in advance.
  12. What is the display on the Speedometer? If it's miles then the odometer is miles. Do you have a sat nav? Bring it with you on your next test drive and clock it on the odometer and the sat nav and compare. If you measured 0.4 on a 400m journey then it has to be kilometers.
  13. I always fill my tank to the brim and wait until the low fuel light comes on before I fill up, so I keep a close eye on consumption. Over the last 3-4 months the fuel consumption has dropped from 42mpg to 33mpg. I do about 500-600 miles a week so the difference is felt in my pocket. I just recently cleaned the EGR valve and more importantly the port below it. I filled up and I also tried the Redex diesel additive (I know I shouldn't have done both at the same time because I won't know which had the greatest effect!). Half way through my first tank since and I'm up at 39mpg and rising. Everyone is either sick of the poor fuel consumption or is sick listening to people complain. If I could switch to the petrol engine I would. Probably 25% more expensive fuelwise, but I think it's worth it for the enjoyment and reliability. I don't like automatics though!
  14. I haven't had any problems since those few days. The car is driven at least 60 miles every day so it wasn't as if the car had been sitting idle for a while. Very strange! Mistermena, thanks for the advice. Just under 50k on the clock at this stage. Not sure when the gearbox oil should be replaced but i'll do it anyway. One of the few relatively cheap and easy jobs to do! Can't say the same about a synchro though! Reganlives, I have a service due in the next couple of weeks so i will be enquiring then.
  15. Hi All, Any help would be greatly appreciated. I drive a 07 220D. I had to drop the folks to the airport very early in the morning one day last week. First hard frost of the year so may be a factor(???). Went through 1st to 3rd no problem, then tried to move into 4th, but the gear would not engage. No grinding though. Went back down through the gears even skipping to 5th but still no luck when trying 4th. Five minutes into the journey 4th finally selected but with a typical grinding noise for a brief moment as it slipped in. This continued each time I tried 4th, as I said it would select but there was the grinding noise briefly each time. 10 minutes later and since then there has not been an issue. I haven't heard of anything like this before, particularly applying to one specific gear, but I am not a mechanic! The car was serviced just over two months ago (4000 miles ago). Thanks in advance.
  16. Matus, The manual does show you how to remove the seats (front and rear). I have yet NOT to find something I was looking for. I can send on screen shots if required.
  17. Thanks guys for that. I forgot to mention that the quote for the pads and discs was WITHOUT labour. I would do them myself. It sounds like it would be cheaper for me to drive over to the UK and buy the pads and discs there!!!
  18. Thanks for that advice. I will do. I might take a photo and put it up here to see what people think.
  19. I'm not sure if this has been done before or how many of you would be interested in this, but I think it would be helpful if we post a review of our latest service. I am living in Ireland and I had to get the 40K mile service done on my '07 IS220D. I rang the 5-6 Lexus dealers in Ireland and got varying prices from €350 to €550 (£290 to £470). Needless to say I went with the €350 which was in Fitzpatricks in Kildare (about 40 miles SW of Dublin). All of the required checks/replacements for a 40K were carried out including the brake fluid change (I had to ask for this). I also mentioned about the decreasing mpg that I had been noticing over the past 2 months or so. I asked them to do a reflash to v600 which they did with a slight reluctance (I am still under warranty). I pointed out a problem I am having with the paint on the roof. It looks like the paint is beginning to peel in some spots. I was told that something acidic dropped on the roof and has begun to eat away at the paint. Nothing they can do though as I had predicted. Overall I was happy with the service. Not too happy that I had a 1L Yaris for the day but in fairness to them, they said their service is cheap and this is how they cut costs. The staff were friendly and helpful and had a very good knowledge of the car. They gave the car the standard clean also. While I was there I got a quote for front and rear pads and discs. An whopping €1050 (£900). I'm not looking forward to doing them when the time comes. Since the service (about two weeks ago) I have done ~1000miles and the consumption is still high unfortunately.
  20. Burto, that is great advice!!! I got that stuff all over my face, into my eyes as well. Fairly stingy on the eyes! Needless to say, I threw on a pair of glasses after that! Reeves, you are talking about checking the fifth injector. This is one thing I would like to check myself but I would really know what to look for. I presume you just check if it is dirty??? I you do successfully check it, post up the procedure and share the knowledge!
  21. Well Reeves, I just did this the other day. Here are some tips that should help you. For the awkward bolts hampered by the battery, just loosen the lower one and fully remove the top one. You can still get the EGR valve out in this way. I use a ratchet with a universal attachment and a deep socket (they are all 12mm btw). It is easier then to reassemble the pipe to the engine block. If you take both out it is tricky to get them back in through both the flange and the gasket. Look after the gaskets. Take it handy when you are pulling up the square gasket under the EGR valve. It can be damaged if you don't slide it gently past the sponge. Don't worry about the sponge. Be rough. It is durable. As has been said here, use a carbon cleaner, works a dream. Apart from that, enjoy the increased fuel efficiency...you hope!
  22. If it helps, the SE (up to early 2009) has 17" 10 spoke alloys. It also has a full leather interior. The basic has 16" alloys. I had a look at the brochure and some of the gadgets on the SE there are not on mine so this looks more recent.
  23. Thanks for this. I just cleaned the EGR valve on Monday. It wasn't as bad as some of the pictures I've seen on this forum. I was thinking of cleaning the mass air flow sensor as well. Seems pretty straight forward. I worry when I hear about large carbon build ups in the engine. Using an additive (if it works) seems sell worth the price. I use ESSO in general. Don't no much about it but never buy the supermarket fuels. Unfortunately I live in Ireland and there are no BP stations I am aware of and most Shell stations have been taken over by Topaz.
