  1. Hey all, sorry for the thread resurrection only I am having the same issue I believe and ive OCD when it comes to car noises so its doing my nut in! The way I would describe the noise I get is like a whistling sound from an old fashioned kettle when it boils just wondering if you could relate to that. I think mines coming from rear driverside and not brakes related.
  2. Haha brilliant. I am glad the 'fix' worked for you mate.
  3. Did you manage to give it a go mate? I'd be interested to see if it helped you too.
  4. Hi Guys, I really contemplated not posting this at all as it’s hardly out of a Haynes Manual type fix! Well bit of background, my Lexus IS200 is on 172k! Runs like a dream looks fresh as any other car but it suffers from the standard annoying clutch judder which had also been present in my previous two Lexus’ only this one was far worse, only happens in first gear and reverse but was very severe and occurs in about 9 out of 10 times. The only way to avoid it was to set off like Schumacher and in stop and start traffic you just look like a tit. So I am faced with a potential massive repair bill, very least I’d need a new clutch and from research work on the flywheel. Now, it was more of a moment of anger than anything logical but from a rolling start I set the revs to about 4k going up hill and rode the clutch at biting point at about 20 mph for about 5-6 seconds accompanied by that horrible burning clutch smell.. This was a month ago and till this day I have not had one judder since then and it literally feels like a different car to drive. Now if anyone is suffering with the same symptoms I am not saying do this as if your clutch is on it’s last legs this may just put the final nail in it’s coffin, I am simply sharing my story lol so make of it what you like. The only explaination I can give it this is it's refaced the clutch? I don't actually know.
  5. Sounds pretty expensive to me considering you got the alignment to pay for on top of that. I would definately get friendly with your local fast fit centre and pop the struts down there and let them swap them and you refit.
  6. Hi Matt, I have a quick question for you if you would be so kind :) I been reading through this thread with interest as my Lex is a 1999 model with 170k on the clock she's an old girl now bless her and been around the block a bit in her time too so the screen has a chip on it and lots of little inperfections as expected. Now reading your advice on it's best to keep the factory glass in there, I am fairly confident this is the original glass it has all the markings on it and the original Lexus dealer stickers at the top by the mirror but as I said because it's done so many miles it's quite hazy, I was wondering when I give the glass company a call to repair the chip (Through my insurance) if I am given the option do you think it would be a worth while benifit asking for a new screen to be fitted rather than repaired. I was thinking due to the amounts of inperfections in it replacement might outweigh the hassle and *risk* of rattles etc. in having a nice clear screen? Also the chip annoys me as it catches my eye (Not literally, that wouldn't be good obviously) if it was repaired would it still be visable? Cheers!
  7. What does it sound like? One of my old Lex had an annoying squeek I couldn't pin point was the clutch release bearing.
  8. I might be barking up the wrong tree here but if the VVTI now kicks in at 2.5k, wouldn't the mpg be even more diabolical than before?
  9. Cool mate, please do update yes. So the old discs you took off, were they warped or just worn? I might try cleaning my pistons up at the weekend in that case, what's the best way off popping them out without fluid going all over the place?
  10. I don't want to p|ss on your bonfire mate - And I really hope you have solved it but bare in mind I've seen a few topics like this and people report replacing the discs etc.. solves it only for it to come back after 500 or so miles.
  11. Steve, I strongly recommend joining the Andriod forums. I'm just a lurker at the moment but the amount of info there is gold. They will def sort you out. http://www.androidforums.com Daz
  12. 'Fraid so mate, even if you didn't want to go down the hammer route you could just have gotten a ball joint splitter from Halfords.
  13. Driving home today in lazy Sunday mode just plodding along doing under the speed limit... look in my mirror and there is a car caning it up the road making ground up behind me at a stupidly fast rate, must have been going about 50/60 baring in mind it's a 30 zone. Sits on my arse till we come up to a roundabout where the single lane branches off into two, obviously he goes into the other lane in order to get ahead of me so is now next to me. Him and his hood rat mate look me and my car up and down, his mate shouts a comment about me running Mazda wheels on a Lexus - I could just make it out over his 'mahoosive chunes', he dumps the clutch wheels screeching flooring it round the roundabout, from what I can only describe as attempted drift... car regains traction and fish tails him into the kerbing surrounding the roundabout. Now I don't normally revel in others misfortune as I believe in what comes around goes around.. but I don't go around driving like a tit so I can't see that happening! So I did have a little chuckle as I drove by. Anyone else witness any show offs on the road get their comeuppance?
  14. I cannot help but if it makes you feel any better, I am in EXACTLY the same situation as you. Mines been like it for five months and gone through an MOT like it, I've kind of accepted it.. It's kinda like a wart - annoying, embarrassing but pretty much harmless, still brakes fine. I too have new discs too which I will fit when I can be arsed. Have you checked your lower ball joints for play mate? Mine where fine but it's worth a check.
  15. Go for TPFT it's surprisingly cheaper than TPO 99% of the time. Firstly I'd try your current insurer to see if they will give you a discount failing that and baring in mind you will basically have zero ncb use confused and other comparison sites for a limited milage policy, shouldn't be too expensive.
  16. Hi Ormi, the plot thickens.. well sort of lol, the side affected seems to be missing the shield completely, also the noise seems come on when I do full lock to the left (and continue for a while once I straighten up) also seems to come on more when I go over bumps.
  17. Hey guys, Forgive me if this breaks the rules of the forum I did check the terms and conditions and nothing advising against this sort of post.. I am based in Kingston Upon Thames (Just outside of Surrey) and would like to know if anyone in the local area fancies helping me fit new pads, discs and overhaul the braking system on my car, bleed it and sort our a sticky caliper. Of course I will make it worth your while in terms of beer tokens ;) If anyones interested please drop me a PM, I don't mind traveling if need be.
  18. Hi all, Got a slight problem with my Lex the driver side front caliper seems to be binding slightly well I guess it is as I get a horrible metalic scrapping noise every rotation of the wheel- only sometimes though it comes and goes, sometimes theres no sound there at all. It was really bad at first, sounded like a Cricket (the insect lol), so I was going to order some new pads and discs, would I need a new caliper as well or should cleaning up the current caliper and regreasing do the job? Just want to check if I will need anything else other than pads and discs really.
  19. Hi guys, A random post for a car forum I know haha but I am just after a bit of advice about changing jobs whilst still keeping my current one. I am 22 and work for a major blue chip company and have done for nearly two years now, however they have recently made a few changes which have alienated quite a few people and I for one am seriously considering leaving, normally there is a one month notice period however due to some of these changes happening we are all required to sign a new contact of employment and one of the stipulations of this is if you do not sign it you can leave without notice, I would be up for that but obviously need to have something else lined up. I have created my CV and ready to start putting it out there however I know the company I work for has close links to quite a few employment agencies locally which I would primarily use to find a new job. So my question is if I start throwing my CV out there would it get back to my current employers?
  20. I pay £249.50 per month TPFT on a ten year old IS200. Yes I have previously been a very naughty boy
  21. Did you give the garage permission to put that crap through your system mate? If that was me I'd be pretty angry to be honest, it might be okay as a temp fix but that stuff does more harm and good, it's main job is to stop leaks ie. block holes the last thing you want is your water pump or pipe being blocked completely. I'd make them do a full system flush.
  22. These are mine, fronts are illegal but I haven't had any bother *touch wood*. Visability is fine front and back, night and day.
  23. It's probably just steam mate, IS200's are quite old technology in terms of modern day engines and also output high C02 emissions, steam on startup is expected. Are you having to top the oil up or coolant?
  24. Hi guys, Just been giving my IS200's engine a bit of a tidy up today and it appears I am missing a pipe, I have circled what I am missing on the picture below, can someone let me know what this does, I'm guessing it's just a breather for the air box?
  25. Hard to tell for sure mate I think it stays the same loudness wise but it tends to match the engine speed.
