  1. Got the lex wim'd this morning great job too. My geo was litterally all over the shop, both front wheels toeing out massively, one of the rears toeing in and the other neutral. I had pre treated the camber bolts and track rods with penetrant fluid so they were easy to undo, it only took 20 minutes! It drives absolutely lovely now, very stable and it gives me bags of grip, hopefully without eating my tyres, the most noticeable thing beside handling is that the braking is far more positive and stable. I know that it has a massive effect on fuel economy, and after visting wim I did another 200 miles, but I cant believe I have done 330 miles at 70mph ish on just over half a tank. I had thrown a wheel weight on the way there but they sorted out the front wheel balances too there and then. Tony was unfortunatley not there today, but thanks to everyone at Blackboots and Wim! Bang Tidy! :P
  2. Sounds like you were very lucky I have had a very similar experience before and it was an anti roll bar drop link that had worn so much the ball joint popped out and was left swinging about. Making the old peugeout very unpredicatble and scary. Check all of the suspension components for failure (bottom ball joints lex favourite).
  3. Hi LOC'ers hope you all ok, getting excited as im off to see the dr at wim next saturday in the meantime ive hit a bit of a snag. The last couple of weeks my front brakes have started sqealing a bit. No dramas I thought- 'I will copperslip the beauties up'. Upon inspection loads of meat left on the pads, discs are good, I have the 2 springs and 8 fitting clips but no anti-squeal shims! Then checked the rears and they are missing their shims too! Has anyone got any of the 8 anti squeal shims knocking about? Or know where I can get a kit from without paying a small fortune? Regards, Den P.S. been running the lex on v-power for a few tankfulls now. Engine is happier- smoother and quiet, pulls better, reckon definetly getting more mlies per tank mixed driving.
  4. My mate has also had this problem with his IS200, for the last 8 years! He's had lexus look at it and it only happens now and again, they told him it was the throttle body, the choke side of things, but wanted a small fortune to change it. Always starts second time, just one of them things.
  5. Thats great, I have been given two kumho ku37 brand new for free, so cant complain! :P My mate will be fitting them for me just before I go to WIM. LexIS200Sport hows it handling now?
  6. Hi everyone, Got the inner tyre wear problem, again!, vague feeling at speed and steering not centering. Was going to get the geo sorted via blackboots and around Stoke, but everyone else has convinced me to get it sorted with Tony himself at WIM. Booked in for next month, cant wait to get it sorted out once and for all! P.S. anyone had any experience with kumho tyres? Den
  7. Hi everybody, I have searched high and low through the forum for a definitive answer without luck. I have a 99 IS200 Manual but with aftermarket 18" alloys on and 225 40 18 tyres. What tyre pressures do you guys use? Have been set at 35psi at the mo but i think i need to increase as its wearing on the shoulders more than the centre (front and rear tyres). I did increase them before but steering was noticeably lighter and did not feel 'planted'. Thinking maybe go for 38psi all round this time for a starting point. What do the hallowed LOC think? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance, Den
  8. 420 motorway miles when light comes on for me, about 320 mixed roads! IS is a heavy lump to keep acclerating, but the vvti is too tempting :) One of the lads I work with got an audi A8 'supertanker' V8 barge. £140 fill up. 230 miles if he drives nicely. :o !!!!!!
  9. Hi guys, had my lexus a few months now and I am very pleased with it. I have given it a major servicing as a bit of a mid life restoration to keep it sweet and wanted to share my experiences with you. Please bear with me as there is a lot to type! I purchased the car in November for £1900 with 122k miles, FSH and in very good condition. I replaced the water pump and cambelt, changed the oil (5w30 mobil esp) and filter and replaced the OAT coolant and brake fluid. I replaced the stereo with a smart sony unit and put some air in the tyres (the 14psi wasnt doing the job :o!) noting my fronts were near the limit on the inside edge. I knew I was going abroad with work in january for a month so I would continue after my trip. However with the cold weather in december, particulary Christmas eve we drove from Oxford to Chester and it was -15C on the temprature gauge. The steering was very sluggish, I stopped halfway at a services and checked the power steering fluid to discover it was definetly slushy! The hygroscopic oil had absorbed moisture over the 10+ years. On boxing day I drained the resevoir and pipes, replaced with new fluid and it transformed the steering feel! Returning from chester the steering became very squeeky, and i noticed that it was pulling to one side on braking. Apart from all the usual grit and salt on the underside I soon realised my bottom ball joints were heavily worn. The day before I went overseas, a pothole took out my N/S front wheel bearing, which some became a vicious drone within 5 miles. Luckily my local factors had one in, I have a 25ton hydraulic press at work and it was replaced within 3 hours! I went away with work and with some extra cash in my pocket decided to finish off the job. I replaced the Gearbox and Diff oils with 75w-90 full syn oil, (the diff especially was needing it, full of muck when drained now really smooth, installed a k+n air filter, replaced the smelly cabin filter, changed to the plugs to denso iridiums (i went for the oem sk20r11's for the longer life plus got 6 for a tenner! :) much better plugs than the previous ngk's). I found a resistor had sneaked in the the inlet air temp sensor wiring so I removed that and replaced both bottom ball joints, the drivers side ball joint could be pulled in and out of its socket!!!! Replacing the ball joints had totally messed up the geometry, it wanted to go into the nearest hedge after every corner, I had every intention of taking it to WIM but I was sent away short notice for a week to canada. Under instructions "dont drive the lexus", on my return I got told by my wife of course "well i only drove it a bit while you were away its better for the shopping....." The 30 miles she had done had totally destroyed the front tyres to the cords!. Brilliant. I double checked all the joints were torqued correctly and noticed a track rod boot had split since i had been away so I ordered a pair. Pennies are tight this month as lots going on, I got hold of a good pair of part worn dunlops and this morning decided to let my local garage set the geometry as I didnt want to chance driving all the way to WIM a)its too dangerous to and B)i would have no tyres left when I arrived! They did a good job it feels much better and smoother now. If these part worns wear on the inside edges again, I will definetly go and see tony at WIM. Checked the fluids too after 4000 miles, not a drop used. The oil is still that clean I could pour it back in the bottle! As with all things in life, things are sent to test us. I took my now driving straight lexus 10 miles into town through B and fast A roads. Pleasure to drive again. On the return journey- where the hell has this brake shudder and noise come from? At low speeds it sounded like the pads with clipping the front o/s disc. On stopping banging noises. I quickly jacked it up, and found it was the caliper slide pins. A thorough copper greasing and a 20 mile test circuit later no shudder and no brake clicking or banging. Its pure coincedence it showed itself this morning, nothing to do with the geometry place I have just been. Just the Lexus keeping me on my toes! Does anyone have any slide pins for sale or know where I can get some from? A massive thankyou to everyone who has ever posted on this forum. A huge knowledge database and an essential tool in getting my car feeling good as new and ready for the years to come. Now im off for a drive!...
  10. Here is a quick pic of my lex, what do you reckon to the wheels?
  11. Just wanted to intorduce myself- Hi im Den! I have just bought an is200 se, aztec fire (controversial red as my wife calls it!) last week and have just given it a full 'mid-life' serivce including cambelt and waterpump, the works. Needed a reliable car that was comfy and fun to drive, I drove my mates is and that was that! I am an experienced engineer, completing an apprenticeship at my uncles garage as young un, before moving into the world of aircraft engineering. Have found this an excellent site for advice and I hope I can return the favour for everyone else. Will add some pictures of my car on here over the week, as I face my first dilemma! It has 18" wolfrace alloys on , which have grown on me and I like them now but the wife is still not sure, will put some pics on and let you lot help me decide! Anyways happy motoring and see you around! Den
  12. I second that, sounds like classic clutch slip.
