  1. for some months now I have been looking for a another set of wheels to replace the 'dinner plate ' wheels currently on the car ( how could anyone at Toyota/Lexus sanction those ridiculous wheels on such a lovely looking car ?) and fit standard tyres ie not run flats. Well this weekend I have just purchased a set of 18 inch wheels from an early GS300,they are in good condtion and cost the very reasonable sum of £116 off ebay.Tried one on this afternoon and they fit perfectly and really look the business. Will get my son to refurb them ( thats his business ),fit 2 new tyres and I will have a nice new set wheels without breaking the bank. I'm posting this in case it helps anyone else wanting to replace their 'dinner plates ' at a reasonable cost and is not sure which Lexus wheels will fit the SC430. Will post some pics up when they are refurbed and on. PS I am not fitting the tyre pressure sensors to the new wheels and will disable the warning light/audio connection ( how to disable the this is covered elsewhere in the SC430 forum).
  2. there was another question I meant to ask:what is recommended cambelt change mileage for the RX300 series 2 engine ? Thanks
  3. it really depends on how comfortable you feel about selling your car privately and letting complete strangers take your pride and joy out for a test drive and then haggling over the price. There are some odd and sometimes aggressively odd characters out there and when they turn up on your doorstep ( perhaps with one or two friends ) it can be a bit intimidating. If you are not totally confidant in dealing with whoever may turn up to view then stick to p/x via a main dealer,in the big scheme of things the extra cost is not that much.
  4. thanks Colin,I think your comments on the 5 speed box on the series 11 confirms my choice. Pleased to see the battery drain is not an RX300 problem, its a real pain in the backside ( allbeit the only one ) on the SC430.
  5. this is a first for me in this section as I'm normally found in the SC430 bit. For a daily driver I have had Volvo estates for the last 30 years but I am thinking its time for something more luxurious and automatic. My SC430 has got the best auto box I have ever experienced so my thinking is maybe its time to get a Lexus estate and the RX300 fits the bill.It would be either a 02/03 or a 2nd gen 03/04. The 1st generation is more typically an estate car and they are getting quite cheap but I prefer the looks of the 2nd generation so to help me make an informed decision I would like to pick some brains, here goes - is the auto gearbox silky smooth on both 1st and 2nd gen models ( I will be comparing it to the SC430 ) ? - are there any problems with either model that I need to look out for ? - I will be seriously thinking about having an LPG kit fitted, has anyone had any experience of LPG on these cars ? - the SC430 suffers badly from battery drain when the car is not used for a few days, does the RX300 have the same problem ? As usual my thanks in advance to all you nice gurus for sharing the knowledge
  6. nice to know I am not alone in disliking the dinner plates. My guess is that the US design team wanted to come up with something different and thought this style of wheel would go down well with the middle aged US buyers that were the focus market for this car. Times and taste change....
  7. got fed up with looking for new wheels, normal tyres and spare wheel so have had the old wheels refurbed. They were very scabby but have cleaned up well and look almost like new. I have taken off the dinner plate covers and had the screw holes filled in and they now look like a really nice set of chunky wheels. Not sure how to get pics up on the forum but the guy who did them has put before and after pictures on his website (www.kerbed.co.uk ) if anyone is interested. Am now in the process of carefully cutting out the centres from the plastic 'dinner plates' and will mount them in the centre of the wheels to cover up the unsightly holes. I put this up in case anyone else is fed up with their old ( pre facelift wheels) and wonders how they would look refurbed and with the covers off.
  8. fitter arrived from Auto Windscreens exactly when he said he would and looks to have done a really neat job with no fuss and no sharp intakes of breath.Pleasantly surprised with this degree of service, perhaps I am getting too cynical in my old age.
  9. TBH I don't think I could find the pothole again and I'm only guessing it was bodyflex from going over it as I can't find any chips or other damage to blame. Phoned up the broker this morning who checked my policy details then put me straight through to an autoglass repair company and I have someone fitting a new 'screen next week.Evidently I just pay them the £75 excess and they deal with the insurance company for the bill. How efficient is that.Lets hope the fitter is equally efficient.
  10. in 50 years of motoring I have never had one of these but have got a real beaut on the SC430. Noticed it this morning ,starts at the the bottom o/s corner and goes diagonally for about 15 inches. Went out on Wednesday down to visit one of the kids down in Sussex and it wasn't there when I got back Wednesday evening,or maybe it was just starting and I didn't notice it. I did hit an unseen pothole on Wednesday and the whole car seemed to shake really badly ( top was down ) and can only think it must have been that flexing of the chassis that caused it. Luckily I have bonus protection on the NCB so will make an insurance claim on Monday. Hope I can get it fixed quickly as driving these cars with the top down in this weather is just wonderful ,over the years I have had a number of convertibles both saloons and sports cars but the SC430 is without doubt the best so far.
  11. does anyone know if the wheels from other Lexus models /other makes will fit the SC430 ? I'm guessing its a quesion of the stud pattern and the amount of space needed to clear the discs/brakes but there may be other criteria ie the offset. I am beginning to realise there's more to 'wheels' than meets the eye and I would like to understand the nitty gritty. Thanks
  12. don't remember knowing any Shirleys ( then again I am an OAP and my memory is not what it was ) so I am denying it.
  13. ditto got my letter as well this morning. Surprised the letter does not mention minimising passenger use until it has been checked. I wonder if it is all models or just the early ones ,mine is a 51 reg.
  14. if you find a space saver spare wheel please post the details,I am having problems getting one. Thanks.
  15. thanks Michelle, you're a star ,I would never have found this link. Those tyres sound expensive ,had you thought of going for a more 'budget ' tyre ? Depends on your annual mileage and type of driving but my initial impression is that there are some reasonable budget tyres out there for around half the 1k you looking at.

  17. at the risk of sounding a complete bozo how did you disable the tyre sensor? I have just replaced the sensor valve with a standard valve on one of the wheels and now have the dash' light on all the time. I see its covered in a forum post by Doug Cleland but where can I find this post . Thanks
  18. still looking for some new wheels,so many to choose from. Will be getting 'normal' tyres so anybody know where I can get a spacesaver spare wheel for the SC430 , I'm guessing I will get robbed if I go into a main dealer. Checking the tyres today and one of the valves pushed pushed right into the rim with loud noise of air rushing out. Luckily there is a KwikFit just along the A4 and they put a new standard valve in and rebalanced wheel for a tenner which I thought was very reasonable as they tend to get bad press on most forums. Now of course I have the sensor light on all the time:anyone know which fuse this runs through ?
  19. che,I am not aware of any meets in April. TBH its been so cold for so long now I haven't given any more thought to organising a meet. I still like the idea of a meet somewhere near the beach and haven't given up on Mudeford ot just along the coast where RayKhan has his beach hut. As soon as it gets warm(er) and the big lightbulb in the sky gets turned up a few notches I will get back on this subject.
  20. I thought the battery drain was a fact of life with this model.10 days is about the max I can leave mine standing and still start it without a jump. I think I will get it checked anyway.
  21. this sounds good to me,I will be putting my name down. Hope to see some some of you guys there as well.
  22. that's a bit of south coast beach I have never visited so I will be paying you a visit when the sun comes out again. I had a beach hut at Worthing along time ago when the kids were young and had a lot of enjoyable days down there.
  23. I was thinking that in early May the car park at Mudeford would have enough spare spaces to fit us in but if it turned out to be a scorching day then yes it could be crowded. I'm happy with Bournemouth so would be interested to see what RayKhan comes up with . PS where's the beach hut ?
  24. In case I didn't make it clear ,its an open meet ,all are welcome.
  25. yes,I think it would be a good idea to have a general Lexus meet ,open to all. Just read on the club meet sub forum that we have to make it very clear this is not a formal LOC meet ,its a private meet that we just happen to be discussing on the forum. There is an east midland meet on 5 May so we should avoid that date, how about the following Saturday or Sunday ,11 or 12 May ? I have an open mind on the venue, not sure where Paultons Park is but my first thought it should be somewhere 'in the middle' of the SE area but as we all enjoy driving its not critical. The car park at Mudeford would be a good place and its right on the beach if anyone is bringing their kids but could be a long haul for some ( its about 2 &1/2 hours from me ).
