  1. Only the lower balljoint can be replaced on it's own, the upper balljoint is part of the control arm, and the entire arm needs to be replaced. I replaced my lower balljoints, along with inner and outer tied rod ends shortly after purchase of the mk2 GS (85k miles). The steering did feel sloppy (I had driven the Mk2 GS when it was new in 1998), after the new parts, the steering felt much, much tighter, and vibration was reduced. It's normally checked at service time. Just because Lexus say it's ok, and it passes the MOT, does not mean the balljoint has not worn. It just means there is no excessive play at that time. IMHO, any GS or LS after 60k will have wear in the lower balljoints. These are heavy cars, and the lower balljoints wear out the quickest on the front suspension. I got the lower balljoints from the States for 50 quid for the pair. Same with the tie rod ends. See linkyOlyonline
  2. Life is "cheap" as Anees points out, a lack of respect for the law, little fear of prosecution for bad driving due to high levels of corruption, and a strong belief in fatalism i.e. it's all destiny Quite scary the first time you witness it. Believe it or not, there is a system in the chaos. Yes, I've driven there, and would drive again! Terrible driving..Well, I stopped counting the number of times a potential head-on crash was about to occur when travelling on my daily commute. Locals in Italy, especially Sicily and Sardinia drive like loons, particularly when overtaking and playing chicken at the same time!
  3. They are already slightly lowered on Sport models. How much lower do you want to go? Better off ordering springs from a US seller. More choice and cheaper prices.
  4. IIRC, they were never an option on pre August 1993 RHD UK models, and I don't believe they would have been an option in Japan either, as you tend not to see heated seats in JDM cars. The handbook supplied by Lexus for the LS400 covered both LHD and RHD models. I hope someone can come along and give you a specific yes/no answer.
  5. Yes, I believe that to be correct.
  6. I don't recommend driving the GS with no ABS and no VSC. It can be lethal in an emergency.
  7. you will like it, the interior is lovely, you will get the same cruising characteristics as the LS but with less of the grandpa image. as long as you don't want to throw it round bends like a sports car, you will enjoy it totally!
  8. welcome to the world of design faults a la lexus. There is help at hand! Talk to BBA Reman (see linky). They quoted me around 800 quid inc vat for a remanufactured part with 2 years warranty BBA Reman I guarantee you won't find any cheaper in the UK, as I did plenty of research into this!
  9. Why didn't you just ask the officer why he stopped you? That's usually one of the first questions I pose to an officer who stops me. Sometimes, they are even upfront and tell you why they have stopped you.
  10. Check the rear tyres to see if any rubber has been burned off them. Might be wise to do a search on youtube for IS250 burnout videos. See if your car is in there. Good Luck!
  11. I got pulled over for having a dodgy haircut. At least they didn't notice the broken windscreen.
  12. Horns are for wimps. I usually open the window and scream and shout at them. The human voice adds more of a personal touch.
  13. Next time you drop the car in, fit secret cameras to the interior, and playback footage to see if a technician is grinning as he canes your car.
  14. I've seen 3 different ones in the last 24 hours on my local roads. Are they suddenly selling like hotcakes?
  15. The grass ALWAYS looks greener on the other side. There are major disparities within the UK. For example, life expectancy is significantly lower in Glasgow compared to parts of London. Parts of England are surprisingly dry, which is contrary to the stereotypical view—London receives less rain annually than Rome, Sydney or New York. In East Anglia it typically rains on about 113 days per year. Most of the south, south-east and East Anglia receive less than 700 mm of rain per year. The English counties of Essex and Cambridgeshire are amongst the driest in the UK, with an average annual rainfall of around 600 mm. In some years rainfall totals in Essex can be below 450 mm—less than the average annual rainfall in Jerusalem and Beirut. The average total annual sunshine in the United Kingdom is 1339.7 hours, which is just under 30% of the maximum possible. The south coast of England often has the clearest skies because cumulus cloud formation generally takes place over land, and prevailing winds from the south-west keep this cloud from forming overhead. The counties of Dorset, Hampshire, Sussex and Kent have annual average totals of around 1,750 hours of sunshine per year. Northern, western and mountainous areas are generally the cloudiest areas of the UK, with some mountainous areas receiving less than 1,000 hours of sunshine a year.
  16. That's nearly 3k a year in depreciation alone!!!! I say get something older but BIGGER! Why not get a 1994-1998 LS400 with a LPG conversion and waft around enjoying the V8 with half price fuel and ordinary road tax? I for one will miss your grumpy posts
  17. I love the pimped out lights. I'm looking into getting 6 foot long LED strips for the Type R..haha!

  19. Look out for a tired suspension, especially things like wear and tear in the bushes. I'm sure maintainance of the car by yourself is possible. Parts will be costly, so it can pay to order some items from the US dealers. Regarding workshop manuals, again your best bet is to browse the US forums, such as www.clublexus.com where there are hundreds of LS430 enthusiasts who have access to the info you may require. Good luck!
  20. America. With the current exchange rate, it should work out cheap. Darrel Diller @ Sewells of Dallas.
