do it. if you plan to keep the car, and it's in mint condition, just think of the hassle of finding another mint LS400 should you need to get another one. you're going to have to spend on maintainance regardless of the car involved. it's not necessarily the value of the car to the market, it's the value to you, that you might consider.

Bit of an unfair comparison, the US economy is MASSIVE compared to the UK's economy, and they have a different approach to taxation, partly because they don't have a welfare state to support. You try living in the US without health insurance, and have a medical problem, and watch how you get treated! It's all relative, fuel prices have gone up in US too, so obviously they are going to be hurting (from their perspective). The US population are much more pro-active, and lobbying is part of the political culture. Don't have to sit and take it - what are YOU doing to CHANGE the situation? There is always the alternative of Venezuela, they have the cheapest petrol in the world (as do most nations that don't need to import oil for car usage) , just 0.7pence per litre @Jan 2008. Exactly. The only things one can do about it is to do exactly what the government want - either do nothing in which case you're still paying lots in petrol, or downsizing which helps their green strategy. Just look at social services, mental health units and all the ancillary facilities that are available to those in need. mate, you're gonna have to get your suspension inspected from top to bottom. the LS400 is a very heavy car, and at 100k+ miles, the suspension WILL require a complete overhaul at some point costing around..I know, because I had the same problems with my LS400..

why don't you change the gearbox oil and clutch fluid with some high quality fluids before thinking of new gearboxes?

Many LS400 owners turn the key even though the engine is already on. It's SOOO quiet!

Glass guide lists part-ex price of this car in excellent condition as £3280. Bear in mind, that the trade are not buying in anything from premium brands/high fuel consumption unless it's way under book price. From another article I read, cars like Audi A6s are dropping at the rate of 10% A MONTH!

Same engine in LS430 and SC430 tho...it is going to be hard to find used, given that the V8s are generally bulletproof..

10W 40 is fine for this car.

aido, i tried two code readers (including the elm one), and 4 different software packages. none of them were able to successfully connect to my 99 GS.

the ELM reader did NOT work with my 99 GS300.
