  1. Lexus has set out its strategy for a new generation of all-electric vehicles, applying design principles and new technologies that will change the future of cars. At its annual Kenshiki forum in Brussels, the company gave a deeper insight into its roadmap for becoming a 100% battery electric vehicle (BEV) brand globally by 2035, and even earlier in Europe, by 2030 if market conditions allow Pascal Ruch, Vice-President, Lexus Europe and Value Chain, said: “Lexus has been a technology pioneer ever since the brand was founded in 1989. It has a proud heritage of challenging the conventions of the luxury car market and consistently delivering new value to customers. When it comes to electrification, we will again push boundaries in the premium automotive world. We will develop a new modular vehicle structure and new-generation batteries, not only to improve the performance of our BEVs but also, and perhaps most importantly, to reinvent driving pleasure. “There will be a revolution in software too, which will allow us to design vehicles with the highest degree of personalisation, truly making luxury personal for each of our customers.” The next generation of Lexus BEVs will use the opportunities of downsizing and weight reductions in structural parts to offer more versatile packaging. Advances in electrification technologies will enable further evolution of the Lexus Driving Signature – a constant, rewarding connection between driver and car that gives comfort, confidence and control at all times. LF-ZC and LF-ZL concepts signal future model thinking The recently unveiled Lexus LF-ZC and LF-ZL concept cars demonstrate how Lexus intends to maximise the potential offered by electrification and innovative technologies to deliver new mobility experiences. The LF-ZC (Lexus Future Zero-emission Catalyst), which made its European debut at the Kenshiki event, previews a new Lexus production sedan scheduled for launch in 2026. It reaps the benefits of Lexus’s electrification experience, with sleek proportions, a low centre of gravity, spacious cabin and a design that blends functionality with pleasing aesthetics. The LF-ZL (Lexus Future Zero-emission Luxury) is a study for a flagship battery electric SUV that enables seamless connection between people, mobility and society. The driving experience can be tailored to each individual user’s preferences and interaction with the vehicle will reach a higher level with the car making personalised suggestions, based on the driver’s style and habits. The use of bamboo as the signature material in the cabin references Japanese tradition, but also reflects a sustainable approach – industrial use of this fast-growing plant is essential to prevent over-growing and protect nature. Both concepts combine functionality with beauty with a new “provocative simplicity” design theme. This evolves the Lexus identity, using refined, simple design to create a striking presence. The fully digital intelligent cockpit gives the driver quick access to controls in an immersive environment. The central feature is a steering yoke to operate Lexus’s exclusive One Motion Grip steer-by-wire technology. Functions are consolidated on small digital screens either side of the driver. Operational controls such as shifts, safety and driver assistance (ADAS) systems and drive mode selection are located on the left-hand pad, while convenience features such as audio, climate control phone and AI functions are grouped on the right. The concepts are also fitted with digital rear-view and side mirrors and an ultra-wide monitor on the front passenger side for accessing entertainment and mobility apps. Arene operating system Lexus’s new Arene Operating System will open new entertainment and connectivity possibilities. Using AI (artificial intelligence), the voice recognition system will provide swift response to commands and be able to make personalised, flexible suggestions – comparable to having a personal butler on hand. The system will even be able to learn the driver’s routines and preferred apps and functions and activate them automatically, without having to be asked. Driving performance Lexus will leverage the specific performance characteristics of BEVs, such as the powerful acceleration and the smooth drive force control provided by its DIRECT4 all-wheel drive technology to enhance the pleasure of driving and make the driver feel at one with their car. DIRECT4, already featured on the all-electric Lexus RZ and RX 500 performance hybrid, constantly balances the drive torque between the front and rear axles, according to the load on each wheel. This ensures optimal traction in all driving conditions, with more linear acceleration, improved cornering performance and a more stable vehicle posture. With a steer-by-wire system, future Lexus BEVs will offer a more intuitive steering experience, especially when driving on winding roads. The new Arene Operating System will change how the vehicle feels and behaves with different driving modes – luxury car or performance car, for example. Going further, the driver can raise the level of sensory experience, changing the car’s sound and vibrations. These features will be made possible with the adoption of a steer-by-wire system and over-the-air access to software options. Modular vehicle structure The next generation of Lexus BEVs will use a new modular structure that divides the vehicle body into three parts – front, centre and rear. This will be made possible by using gigacasting, a system that gives greater freedom in vehicle form. Reducing the number of parts – the front and rear sections of a vehicle structure currently comprise around 175 separate elements – will drastically reduce production time and give the flexibility for speedy development of different vehicle types. The front and rear modules can each be produced in less than two minutes. The modular structure will also being the benefits of higher rigidity and weight reduction, which in turn will contribute to linear, natural-feeling vehicle dynamics. Consideration will also be given to repair costs, ensuring that minor accidents do not result in high repair bills for customers. The manufacturing process will also be transformed with cars moving autonomously through each stage of production on a self-driving assembly line. Multi-technology approach and product developments In the near-term, through to 2026, Lexus will continue with its multi-technology electrification approach, based on three vehicle types: models offering multiple powertrain options, such as the UX, NX and RX SUVs; BEVs using Lexus’s current global architecture platform, such as the RZ; and BEVs constructed using gigacasting on a next-generation platform, such as the future model based on the LF-ZC concept. Over the next few years, vehicles will be introduced in each of these three categories, including BEVs, to expand and diversify the Lexus range. They will also all benefit from powertrain enhancements and continuous improvements in battery technology. Lexus will be the first adopter of new battery technologies, including a new lithium-ion performance battery that is expected to offer a 10 to 80 per cent recharging time of about 20 minutes and a cruising range of about 800 km (WLTP cycle). A lower-cost battery will also be made available, increasing customer choice. In spring 2024, the RZ range will grow to include a new front-wheel drive version. Later, the option of One Motion Grip steer-by-wire will be offered for the first time. Also planned for the future is system replicating the feel and operation of a manual transmission for BEVs – another dimension in Lexus’s mission to focus on driving pleasure. From the outside, the vehicle will be as quiet as any other BEV, but at the controls the driver will experience all the sensations of a manual transmission vehicle, including engine sound and vibrations. Lexus growth in Europe This year, the company expects its European new car sales to reach about 74,000 units. This is an increase of about 50 per cent on 2022’s performance, making Lexus one of the fastest-growing premium brands. It will also be a new record total for the region, excluding Russia. This success is founded on a strong model range that has been almost completely renewed during the past two years. The line-up includes three all-new models in the critical D and E-premium SUV segments – the NX, RX and RZ – offering hybrid electric, plug-in hybrid electric and battery electric powertrain options. The momentum is expected to continue in 2024, propelling the company towards its future ambition of six-digit sales in Europe. Lexus has revealed two all-new models that are taking the brand into new market segments: the new flagship LM “Luxury Mover” people-carrier and the LBX, the company’s first small urban crossover. The LM takes passenger comfort to an unprecedented level while the LBX challenges the established luxury car hierarchy, proving that prestige features, quality and driving experience can be delivered in a small car package. Additionally, a new-generation GX will be introduced in eastern markets, a large SUV offering supreme luxury with exceptional off-road capabilities. These models demonstrate Lexus’s growth ambitions and desire to continue to push boundaries with vehicles designed to engage with new consumer demographics.

  3. Lexus’s “no compromise” approach to creating the all-new LBX compact crossover applies just as much to the car’s advanced, electrified powertrain as it does to its new-direction styling and luxury features. It’s equipped with a brand-new self-charging hybrid electric system that benefits from latest-generation technologies that raise the bar in all aspects of performance, from fuel and emissions efficiency through to driving pleasure. As the long-established leader in electrification in the premium car market, Lexus has applied its unmatched know-how and experience to reimagine Lexus Hybrid Drive, saving weight and reducing the size of components wherever possible and analysing every element to see where fuel economy and emissions can be improved. At the same time, performance is more rewarding than ever with response, feedback and handling that combine to deliver the Lexus Driving Signature – comfort, control and confidence at all time. A small engine with big ideas The three-cylinder engine may be small in size, but it boasts impressive technical features that maximise both performance and efficiency. Some of these have their origins in the cutting-edge world of Formula 1 motor racing, such as an ultra-lightweight piston design. Although the unit has a modest 1.5-litre capacity, it is perfectly suited to powering the LBX as part of the self-charging hybrid electric powertrain. It meets all Lexus’s stringent requirements for long-lasting reliability and being naturally aspirated, is not subject to the operating stresses of turbocharging. Customer peace of mind when it comes to quality and durability is guaranteed with Lexus’s market-leading warranty of up to 10 years/100,000 miles. Maximum output from the full system is 134bhp/100kW with peak torque of 185Nm. This is expected to enable 0-62mph acceleration in 9.2 seconds, while permitting confident towing of loads up to 750kg. The engine operates with exceptional thermal efficiency, which means more of the energy in every drop of fuel is converted into drive power. This is achieved through high-speed combustion and minimising losses from friction throughout the drivetrain. A variable cooling system helps the engine warm up quickly, adjusting automatically to its running conditions and the external temperature. Using electronic variable valve-timing – VVT-iE – also supports efficiency and response, even at low engine speeds. Smaller, lighter better The focus on designing a system that’s smaller, lighter and ideally suited to the LBX – the most compact Lexus model yet – has brought about significant changes in the hybrid set-up. A new power control unit (PCU) ensures the increased hybrid battery output can be optimally managed; being relocated above the transaxle means it takes up less space, too. The compact packaging also sees the system’s two electric motor-generators positioned side-by-side on separate shafts. The same principles apply to the hybrid battery. This is a new bi-polar nickel-metal hydride unit that, while being smaller and lighter, produces more energy, thus able to play a greater role in the car’s performance. The new hybrid system lets you drive at higher speeds and for longer distances in all-electric EV mode. Feeling good Close attention has been paid to delivering the hybrid system’s power in a way that’s pleasing and reassuring. The driver will appreciate how the powertrain is tuned for enjoyable performance and faithful handling, in particular with a smooth, linear acceleration feel that closely matches their use of the accelerator pedal. On higher grade models, a sequential Shiftmatic system provides paddle controls to engage the shift range through six steps, giving the feel of using a manual transmission. E-Four offers more Lexus’s E-Four all-wheel drive system is available as an option on certain LBX models. Adding an additional electric motor on the rear axle automatically provides extra grip and stability when required on slippery surfaces and when pulling away and cornering, increasing driver confidence. Optimal noise reduction The LBX is engineered to minimise transmission of engine noise and vibration, including the use of a balancer shaft on the power unit itself and widespread use of noise-absorbing materials at strategic points throughout the vehicle. The new hybrid battery has an impact as well: with more power supplied by the battery, the engine is able to run at up to 20 per cent lower revs. In addition to being good for fuel economy, this means the engine sound is more closely aligned to the pressure the driver applies to the throttle.
  4. Sophisticated technologies that take care of every aspect of your safety, comfort, entertainment and connectivity have become a central feature of today’s leading luxury cars. But if you believe such advanced systems are reserved for the largest and most expensive models, the all-new Lexus LBX will make you think again. Right from the start of the development programme, Lexus set out to overturn any preconception that customers who choose a smaller model have to settle for something that is inferior. That’s not just in terms of craftsmanship luxury and the quality of the driving experience, but also the richness of the equipment specification. The LBX compact SUV, the brand’s smallest model to date, is equipped as standard with an impressive array of high-tech features, with many more available as options. It’s another example of Lexus challenging the market status quo and an expression of its commitment to putting the customer first and “making luxury personal”. Technology that puts safety first Where safety is concerned, every LBX model provides the peace-of-mind of the comprehensive, third generation of Lexus Safety System+ being fitted as standard – just as it is on Lexus’s higher segment models. Its systems constantly monitor the traffic environment all around the car, giving prompt warnings when they detect an accident risk and intelligently providing assistance when needed – steering, braking and drive force – to help prevent a collision. The technology is advanced, but operates in a way that feels natural to the driver. It can also make the job of driving less of a burden by automatically keeping the car centred in its traffic lane, at a safe distance from the vehicle ahead and at the right speed to take a bend. The latest safety developments also include e-Latch, a smooth and refined electronic door release system with a Safe Exit Assist function which automatically prevents a door being opened into the path of traffic from behind. The digital dimension The LBX comes with a fully digital package for information, entertainment and connectivity, creating a seamless and intuitive user experience. For the driver, the focused Tazuna concept features Lexus’s first 12.3-inch digital instrument display. Its appearance changes according to the car’s selected drive mode and the driver can customise the layout to suit their personal preferences. There’s also the convenience of a digital key option: no need for a physical key fob, you can unlock and start the car using your smartphone – just having it on your person is all that’s required. Up to five people can be authorised on the app, so car sharing is made easier and more secure. Informed and entertained In the centre console, there’s a 9.8-inch touchscreen display for operating the Lexus Link Connect multimedia which includes cloud-based navigation that’s constantly up-to-date with the latest traffic conditions to help with easy journey planning. The system includes a voice agent that recognises commands given in everyday speech and can be used even when the audio is playing. The Lexus Link+ multimedia package takes things to an even higher level, with more functions for intelligent journey planning and localised information. There are up to five USB ports around the cabin and smartphones can be instantly integrated with the car’s multimedia system – wirelessly for Apple CarPlay and with a wired connection for Android Auto. Where both safety and multimedia functions are concerned, software updates are delivered over-the-air for installing when it’s convenient for the driver, so there’s no need to visit a service workshop. For the ultimate in in-car audio, Lexus’s exclusive partner Mark Levinson has designed a 13-speaker premium surround sound system, specifically to suit the LBX’s interior architecture. Comfort and wellbeing A comfortable cabin environment is maintained whatever the weather outside, thanks to the Lexus Climate Concierge. This co-ordinates the different heating and ventilation sources to ensure temperatures are tailored to suit each person on board. Using the Lexus Link app, the cabin can even be warmed or cooled, or windscreen de-icing can be started, before you set off on a journey. On-board wellbeing is boosted by the option of nanoe-X air quality technology. This sends a flow of microscopic water molecules into the cabin which are proven to inhibit viruses, bacteria and unpleasant odours. It also helps keep skin and hair moisturised, too. An ambient lighting system is available, helping set the tone to suit the driver’s mood, the journey or time of day with a range of 64 different colours across a series of themed setting to evoke different atmospheres, from calm and relaxed to invigorating and energised.
  5. Lexus is presenting the world premiere of a series of new battery electric concept models at the first Japan Mobility Show this week (Tokyo, 26 October to 5 November). Taking the theme “Pushing the Boundaries of the Electrified Experience,” the company is giving a rich insight into how it will maximise the opportunities offered by electrification and new technologies to deliver fresh mobility experiences The Lexus booth is hosting the public debut of the LF-ZC, a battery electric saloon concept which points towards a new production model scheduled for release in 2026, and the LF-ZL, its vision for a flagship battery electric SUV. Lexus has been a technology pioneer ever since the brand was founded in 1989 and it has a proud heritage of challenging the conventions of the luxury car market and consistently delivering new value to customers. Now established as a global luxury lifestyle brand, it continues to take up the challenge of creating cars and experiences that exceed customer expectations. Lexus’s aim is to be a battery electric vehicle brand in Europe by 2030 and globally by 2035. To achieve this goal, it will introduce a completely new modular vehicle structure, adopt cutting-edge new production technologies and totally revise its vehicle software platform. Functionality and beauty, without compromise The next generation of Lexus BEVs will have more versatile packaging thanks to the downsizing and weight reduction of all their structural components. They will also benefit from the constant honing of the Lexus Driving Signature that has gone hand-in-hand with the evolution of new electrification technologies. The new concepts embody Lexus’s vision to deliver BEVs that present both functionality and beauty, without compromise. The LF-ZC symbolises Lexus’s electrification journey, with its sleek proportions, low centre of gravity, spacious cabin and an emotionally charged design that blends functionality and aesthetics while promising an exhilarating driving experience. The LF-ZL concept offers a glimpse into a future where mobility, people and society can be seamlessly integrated. The driving experience will be tailored to each individual, the vehicle taking hints from the driver’s habits and making personalised suggestions to foster unparalleled interaction. This flagship model aims to help empower people to live the life they want while contributing positively to their personal surroundings, the wider environment and society as a whole. Both concept vehicles feature a next-generation fully digital intelligent cockpit that provides intuitive, quick access to essential controls in an immersive driving environment. The new Arene OS interface software will enable progressive feature updates to keep pace with the evolution of safety systems and multimedia functions. Driving performance In its development of next-generation BEVs, Lexus seeks to enhance the pleasure of the driving experience, making the driver feel at one with the vehicle. This includes leveraging the inherent inertia characteristics of BEVs and adding the smooth drive force control of the DIRECT4 all-wheel drive system (as featured on the current RZ 450e) and the intuitive, linear feel of a steer-by-wire system. As the Arene OS evolves, Lexus is also committed to providing a driving experience personalised to each individual with a focus on delivering an ideal balance of acceleration, cornering and braking. The goal is to create the ultimate vehicle for each customer through a synergy of hardware and software. Exterior design: “Provocative Simplicity” The design theme, known as “Provocative Simplicity,” represents an evolution of Lexus’s unique identity, focusing on a provocative presence and refined, simple design. By prioritising aerodynamic performance and incorporating distinctive features and structures specific to BEVs, the design team strived to achieve a captivating, condensed, and low-slung form that instantly creates a sense of emotional impact. The concept displays a sleek silhouette which extends from the low-slung bonnet, through the tapered cabin towards the rear. The flared rear wheel arches are accentuated, giving a balance between aerodynamic performance and wide stance. The spindle body design flows from the car’s front face, continuing seamlessly along the sides of the vehicle to the rear bumper, symbolising an all-encompassing evolution of function and design through electrification. Functional elements have been transformed into distinctive features, with integration of aerodynamic components such as air intakes and outlets. The result is an emotionally engaging exterior that delivers aerodynamic performance with no sense of the design being commoditised. Fully digitised intelligent cockpit Positioning the front occupants in a low, forward position creates a sense of spaciousness in the interior. The fully flat floor and panoramic roof add overhead expansiveness, resulting in an unexpectedly open interior design not evident from the exterior. Functions that have previously been spread across a wide area of the cockpit have been consolidated on digital pads within the driver’s arm reach. Operational functions such a shifts, safety and driver assistance (ADAS) systems and drive mode selection are located on the left-hand pad while convenience features such as audio, climate control phone and AI functions are grouped on the right. The “eyes on the road” principle is supported by a distant view meter, which projects information onto the windscreen like a head-up display. Digital side mirrors are also fitted, minimising shifts in the driver’s focus, gaze and head movement to monitor the vehicle’s surroundings, promoting concentration on the task of driving. An ultra-wide monitor on the front passenger side can be used as an open platform for entertainment and diverse mobility applications. Bamboo CMF Concept The Bamboo CMF Concept1 is being presented at the Japan Mobility Show to illustrate Lexus’s SDG (sustainable development goals) efforts, focusing on circular use of resources while at the same time giving customers a new experience in sophisticated, luxurious design. In line with Lexus’s SDG philosophy, bamboo is the signature material in the concept vehicle exemplifying the commitment to efficient recycling of valuable natural resources. Bamboo strikes a balance between fast growth, significant CO2 absorption capacity and an enduring beauty that has seen it used as a material for Japanese construction and crafts for centuries. Different techniques have been used to incorporate bamboo in the CMF Concept’s design to achieve a new level of luxury and beauty. For example, bamboo fibres and woven fabrics are used for decorative elements that interact with the ambient light. Next-generation BEV characteristics deliver superior performance With no need for an engine compartment, aerodynamic performance and design aesthetics have been balanced with a target drag coefficient (Cd) of less than 0.2. A low bonnet and cowl allow for an unprecedented, expansive field of vision from inside the car. Lexus aims to achieve approximately twice the range of conventional BEVs with a next generation performance (prismatic) battery and improved energy efficiency. The aim is to allay drivers’ concerns about the distance their car will take them and help them enjoy the drive, whether a city commute or long-distance trip. Improved aerodynamics and weight reduction enhance vehicle efficiency and battery performance. The battery’s low profile contributes to increased vehicle design flexibility, resulting in a more attractive silhouette. It also helps secure a low centre of gravity for improved driving dynamics. High energy density is achieved by simplifying and compacting the battery structure. Advanced customisation to create a truly personalised vehicle The next-generation voice recognition system will use artificial intelligence (AI) technology to provide a service that’s like talking to an attentive and accommodating personal servant, with swift response to commands and helpful, flexible suggestions. Using self-learning functions for software customisation, the vehicle will automatically apply optimal personalised settings for each customer, each time the car is driven. Going beyond the performance of conventional navigation tools, the system makes route and driving mode recommendations that are aligned with the driver’s preferences, based on their daily activity patterns and current mood. Through the accumulation of driving data, it also aims to deliver a more personalised driving experience. The system goes further than simply understanding people’s personal characteristics, it also has the potential to identify subliminal preferences that they might not be aware of. Adoption of the new Arene OS will have an unprecedented impact on vehicle driving dynamics. In a single vehicle it will be able to replicate the driving characteristics, sounds and vibrations associated with different types of car, so the driver can tailor the experience to suit their personal preference. The combination of steer-by-wire and over-the-air (OTA) software updates will allow vehicle settings from the virtual space to be brought into the real world. Customers can take part in e-sports using the steer-by-wire technology in their vehicle and then implement their preferred settings via OTA to experience them in real world driving. New modular structure Lexus’s next generation BEVs will feature a new modular structure which divides the vehicle body into three parts: front, centre and rear. This will be made possible through gigacasting, a process which will provide greater freedom of form. Meanwhile the integration of parts will increase rigidity, contributing to linear, natural vehicle dynamics. Locating the battery in the centre section ensures there is no structural effect on the front and rear. It also allows for simple integration of advances in battery technology, making future development more agile. The production process will use a self-driving assembly line, where cars will move autonomously through each stage of the manufacturing process. The vehicle can drive itself, using just its battery, motor, wheels and wireless terminal components. Eliminating conveyor belts from the production line will allow for more flexible factory layouts, reduce the lead-time for mass-production and save on investment costs. LF-ZL concept hints at the potential for a future flagship BEVs The LF-ZL points to a future Lexus’s flagship model, offering a prestigious ownership experience beyond the car, driven by innovation in next-generation BEV architecture and software advancements from the new Arene OS. Its cabin is spacious and relaxing, taking advantage of the freedom in BEV-specific packaging and optimising interior space. Technology is applied to make traditional Omotenashi features are even more advanced, ensuring an even more pleasurable on-board experience. By harnessing the full capabilities of Arene OS, Lexus will establish advanced information integration that learns and anticipates the driver’s needs, resulting in a personalised mobility experience. It also generates fresh experiential value by enabling interaction with a range of societal infrastructure and services. Through Interactive Reality in Motion2, onboard sensors work in conjunction with digital data from the car’s surroundings. For example, when drivers point to objects or places of interest during their journey, the car’s display promptly delivers information along with voice guidance, enhancing the interactive connection between people and their cars. Big Data is used to manage the charging process and power supply, so the vehicle can be connected to a network and become an integral part of the local infrastructure when parked. This allows seamless integration of the vehicle with the customers lifestyle LF-ZC outline specifications3 Overall length 4,750 mm Overall width 1,880 mm Overall height 1,390 mm Wheelbase 2,890 mm Cd value Less than 0.2 (target) LF-ZL outline specifications Overall length 5,300 mm Overall width 2,200 mm Overall height 1,700 mm Wheelbase 3,350 1 CMF – Colour, Material and Finish, representing design elements in car manufacturing. 2 Concept for an interactive reality experience platform. 8. Lexus’s UK model line-up takes a new direction with the introduction of the all-new LM, an MPV with a focus on supreme luxury. Available to order now, and with first customer deliveries during the fourth quarter of this year, this self-charging hybrid electric “luxury mover” delivers the ultimate in Lexus omotenashi hospitality. Its arrival – and that of the LBX “breakthrough crossover” in early 2024 – will give Lexus its strongest model range yet in the UK, spanning SUVs, saloons, sports models and people carriers. Lexus focused on producing a vehicle with a dual personality: one which offers a perfectly relaxing living space and can be used as flexible, mobile office by those who need to work while on the move. Two LM versions are offered, with four or seven seats. In the seven-seat model, the middle row of two VIP seats is prioritised in terms of space and accessible functions and an additional third row is provided with flip-up seats in a two-plus-one configuration which can be folded away when more load space is required. The four-seat Takumi model is the pinnacle of luxury, with just two multi-function rear seats and a wealth of features to make every journey supremely comfortable and enjoyable. These include a partition between the front and rear cabin housing a 48-inch ultra-widescreen monitor and glass panel that can be dimmed for privacy. The bespoke Mark Levinson 3D Surround Sound audio system has a 23-speaker array, while cabin comfort is enhanced by a more sophisticated Lexus Climate Concierge that uses thermal sensors to precisely control and direct heating and ventilation. The interior exemplifies Lexus’s brand vision of “making luxury personal”. Seats are designed for perfect support and comfort; the cabin environment is precisely controlled for temperature, air quality and lighting; and there is easy, intuitive access to multiple connectivity and entertainment options, including bespoke Mark Levinson 3D Surround Sound reference audio systems and (in the four-seat model) a 48-inch HD ultra-widescreen monitor. The luxury finish and appointments are of a quality typically matched only by extra-cost customisation options for competitor models. Comfort is the defining quality of the LM. Every aspect of the engineering contributes to achieving a perfectly smooth, quiet and composed ride, to the extent passengers might not even notice the vehicle is in motion. These qualities are supported by the fact Lexus has used its GA-K global passenger car platform for the model. This contrasts with rival premium models which are developed on van/light commercial vehicle underpinnings. Building on the low centre of gravity and high body rigidity benefits of the GA-K platform, Lexus has developed a new Rear Comfort drive mode, adopted new braking and body control systems and refined suspension performance. Similarly, extensive measures have been taken to counter noise and vibration to achieve cabin quietness that has a reassuring, natural quality. Where the driving experience is concerned, the driver enjoys a natural dialogue with car and the constant comfort, control and confidence of the Lexus Driving Signature. For the first time, the Lexus Driving Signature also takes into account the quality of the passenger experience. Model range and pricing Three versions of the LM are available: the seven-seat LM with front or all-wheel drive and the top specification LM Takumi with two rear seats. Customer response to the new model has been strong, with more than 170 orders received since reservations opened in July – the majority of these for the Takumi version. Pricing is as follows: – LM 350h (front-wheel drive) £89,995 LM 350h (all-wheel drive) £92,995 LM 350h Takumi (all-wheel drive) £112,995 In common with every new Lexus, the LM is eligible for Lexus warranty protection for up to 10 years or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first). This comprises an initial three-year manufacturer warranty, followed by up to a further seven years of service-activated warranty. For the first three years of the car’s life, owners can have it serviced at a place of their choice. When the new car warranty period expires, they can then benefit from an additional 12 months (or 10,000 miles) warranty when their vehicle has a qualifying service at an authorised Lexus workshop. The warranty is provided at no extra cost, up to a limit of 10 years/100,000 miles. Terms and conditions apply; full details are available at www.lexus.co.uk.
  9. In 2026, Lexus will introduce a next generation battery electric vehicle (BEV) with a revolutionary modular vehicle body structure, a drastically changed production method and a completely renewed software platform. A first concept model that explores this approach will be unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show in October as part of Lexus’s commitment to changing the future of automobiles through electrification. The announcement was made at the Lexus Showcase event which was held in Japan on 15-16 September. Lexus International President Takashi Watanabe introduced a line-up of new Lexus models designed to meet the diverse needs of customers and regions across the world. He also discussed the future direction of Lexus vehicle manufacturing and the company’s efforts to address the challenge of developing and promoting BEVs to help achieve a carbon-neutral society. Since its founding in 1989, Lexus has upheld the principle of “Pushing Boundaries,” constantly challenging the conventional notions of luxury cars and consistently delivering new technologies and values to its customers. As a luxury lifestyle brand, it will remain agile and attentive to customer needs and the evolving times. Diversity The model line-up displayed at the Lexus Showcase included the all-new LM, a bold new option for chauffeur-driven vehicles. The LBX transcends the conventional size hierarchy and is a car for customers with discerning tastes – specifically targeting the European market with its design. Models marketed outside the UK and Western Europe include the GX, which combines genuine off-road capability with refined on-road luxury, and the TX which caters exclusively to North American customers with spacious three-row seating. Lexus will launch a customer experience programme in Japan aimed at the future practical application of the ROV Concept (Recreational Off-highway Vehicle), which features a Lexus-first hydrogen-powered engine. In developing the ROV, the goal was to offer a distinctive driving experience not possible with regular passenger cars. This was achieved through a compact body size and high off-road capabilities, which allow for an exhilarating driving experience. By using a hydrogen engine, the ROV aims to strike a balance between environmental consideration and the thrill of feeling the heartbeat of an engine. The ROV features components with low environmental impact technologies, thanks to the cooperation of partner companies who share the same vision. Lexus will continue to provide a variety of experiences that help customers enjoy an outdoor lifestyle, based on the idea of “inspiring a deeper love and understanding of nature”. Additionally, Lexus will use the opinions collected through customer experience programmes as feedback to further advance future technological developments for practical applications. Electrification Lexus will continue its efforts to achieve a carbon-neutral society, centred on BEVs. For about 10 years, Lexus has been working on enhancing the basic performance and characteristics of its vehicles as well as refining the qualities of the Lexus Driving Signature. This driving experience will be carried forward and taken to an even higher level with Lexus’s BEV and electrification technology programme. The core technologies include seamless drive force control with the DIRECT4 all-wheel drive system and a steer-by-wire system, which provides an intuitive, linear steering feel. Lexus will continue to pursue a natural dialogue between driver and car that evokes the joy of driving. In addition, with the RZ Sports Concept which was unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January, Lexus is thinking of new ways to inspire the love of driving and cars, even with BEVs, as it works towards becoming a carbon neutral business. With the Electrified Sport Concept, Lexus will drive the development of future electrification technologies such as new batteries, aerodynamics, weight reduction, and high rigidity. Lexus will also take on the challenge of sustainable initiatives that consider the natural environment. Without being bound by conventional values of luxury, it will make use of recycled and man-made materials to create new, high-quality interiors.

Lexus vehicles, including 15 RX hybrid SUVs and three Toyota Proace Verso people carriers, are transporting GB players and team members throughout the tournament. Lexus ambassador Cameron Norrie is representing the GB national team in the competition, with his team playing Australia on Wednesday 13 September, Switzerland on Friday 15, and France on Sunday 17 September. Chris Hayes, Director of Lexus in the UK, commented: “We’re delighted to be supporting the Davis Cup Group Stage Finals in Manchester this week, the inaugural tournament for the newly named Lexus Great Britain men’s team. These high-high profile tournaments are a great platform for the sport and provide inspiration for tennis and sports fans alike of all ages.”  Hayes continued: “Our tennis partnership is a natural step for the Lexus brand, and it’s good to commence our journey integrating and showcasing our Lexus hospitality and craftsmanship to British tennis players and fans throughout this season’s LTA events and towards the future.”  The national teams competing in the Davis Cup, Billie Jean King Cup and World Team Cup will be known as the Lexus Great Britain teams.
  11. Lexus has rewritten its own rule book in developing the all-new LBX urban-friendly crossover, not least in rethinking some of its most familiar design conventions. This radical new self-charging hybrid electric model – the most compact yet to bear the Lexus badge – has styling that sets it apart from its larger stablemates and signals its intention to capture the hearts and minds of a new breed of customer for the brand. And if you’re looking for an element of surprise, its SUV-style “planted” look is in part inspired by the shape of traditional Japanese kagami-mochi rice cakes – another example of how Lexus references heritage aesthetics in its contemporary designs. The team that created the LBX was encouraged by the company’s top management to apply fresh thinking, evolving the principles of Lexus Next Chapter design that have defined the latest generation of NX, RX and RZ models. The desire was to produce a car with strong visual appeal for younger, city-smart Europeans who favour premium quality that comes with a more casual, contemporary look and feel. This is a Lexus you’ll feel at home driving in jeans and sneakers, while still appreciating the luxury craftsmanship and premium quality that are time-honoured hallmarks of the brand. Nothing makes a clearer statement of the designers’ intentions than the LBX’s frontal styling, which presents a new Lexus “face”. The spindle grille, a signature feature of every Lexus model for more than a decade, has been rethought as a smaller, unified and frameless unit that blends into the bodywork. Thanks to the compact hybrid engine, the front edge of the bonnet has been brought down, below the level of the headlights, drawing on the “Resolute Look” that characterised Lexus models from the early 2000s onwards. Fresh details include clever integration of the daytime running lights and turn indicators in a single unit, with the familiar Lexus “L” motif reversed to point in the direction of the turn. A powerful stance and sense of power are all part of the traditional SUV look, qualities that the new LBX projects from its compact dimensions. Viewed side-on, the classic elements are clear to see: short overhangs for nimble performance and powerfully flared front and rear wings. Achieving the taut, muscular surfacing around the rear doors proved one of the toughest challenges, but it is a key element in the car’s road presence. The eye is drawn naturally to the large-diameter tyres and wheels and there is a strong sense of the LBX having reassuring stability, founded on its low centre of gravity. The visual message is that this is a car you can drive with confidence, whether on city streets, exploring country roads or cruising on the highway. Inspiration for the LBX’s powerful proportions came from a surprising source – the kagami-mochi rice cakes that are a traditional Japanese religious offering at New Year. These are made of two discs – a small one set on top of a larger one. When viewing the LBX from the rear, this balance of shapes is reflected in the car’s compact cabin positioned above a powerful underbody – another visual cue implying a low centre of gravity and stable handling. Moving the licence plate down to the rear bumper has allowed for a clean, uncluttered back door surface that throws the LEXUS name into relief. In common with other Lexus SUVs, the LBX has a rear light bar with its own, dedicated design. Here, it extends beyond the span of the back door to the rear wings, emphasising the car’s width and firmly planted look. The design is, of course, not just about engaging looks: throughout, fine details have been incorporated to achieve the best possible aerodynamic performance. This, in turn, is an important factor in giving the car stable handling and optimising its fuel efficiency. The roof, the gate-type spoiler and the rear combination lights are all shaped to smooth airflow over and away from the car. The belt-line mouldings sit flush with the bodywork and there are fins on the lower edge of the side sills add to the aerodynamic efficiency, together with precise styling of the front bumper corners and rear bumper sides. To show the LBX’s lines off their best effect, Lexus is offering a choice of exterior paint finishes that includes vibrant shades of red, yellow and blue and the option of a striking bi-tone execution with a contrast black roof and pillars. LBX pre-sales are now open for UK customers, with formal orders commencing in October. First deliveries are expected in March 2024. For more details visit www.lexus.co.uk/new-cars/lbx-world-premiere.

  19. Wide-ranging upgrades have strengthened the appeal of the Lexus UX 300e, the urban crossover launched three years ago as Lexus’s first all-electric model. These revisions enable the UX 300e to go further between charges; raise the cabin’s aesthetic appeal, comfort, and convenience; and make the car – Lexus’s “Creative Urban Explorer” – even more enjoyable to drive The changes also affirm how well-suited electrification is to the characteristics of Lexus vehicles, complementing quiet refinement with rewardingly responsive road behaviour. The most notable change is a new battery system which increases driving range by more than 40 per cent, to up to 279 miles in the combined WLTP cycle. Meanwhile, the Lexus Electrified driving experience benefits from detail alterations to the car’s suspension, body, and chassis. Inside the car, the most evident improvement is the revised multimedia system. This has greater connectivity, faster and easier operation, cloud-based navigation, and larger eight and 12.3-inch touchscreens. The interior is also offered with new upholstery choices. The upgraded UX 300e debuted in UK showrooms in spring 2023. Its sister model, the self-charging hybrid electric UX 250h enjoyed a series of upgrades in summer 2022. Significant increase in driving range As Lexus’s first BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle), the UX 300e has evolved from the brand’s 18 years of leadership in electrification, which started with the introduction in 2005 of the RX 400h, the world’s first luxury hybrid. Today, more than 2.4 million electrified Lexus cars are on the road around the world, 550,000 of these in Europe. The Lexus Electrified initiative continues to drive progress through the brand’s world-class know-how in battery design, manufacturing, and battery management systems. This is creating a new generation of vehicle refinement and driving pleasure, with the class-leading quality and reliability that are hallmarks of the Lexus brand. The latest development in Lexus’s electrification programme is replacement of the UX 300e’s original 54.3kWh lithium-ion battery by one with 72.8kWh capacity. This powers a compact motor/generator which drives the vehicle’s front wheels, producing 150kW (201bhp) and up to 300Nm of torque for effortless, linear acceleration. The powertrain also captures energy when the vehicle is braking or coasting and converts it into electricity, stored in the battery. Previously the UX 300e offered a range in the WLTP combined driving cycle of 189-196 miles, depending on options such as wheel size. The new battery improves this by more than 40 per cent. Models running on 17-inch wheels now achieve a WLTP combined range (depending on options) of up to 279 miles; those on 18-inch wheels have a combined range (also depending on options) of up to 274 miles. Aerodynamic efficiency helps maximise the UX 300e’s range. Shutters in the lower front grille open and close automatically, depending on battery state and how much airflow is needed for cooling. This helps reduce the car’s coefficient of drag to Cd0.31. The underfloor covers have been enlarged, compared to other UX models, and the bottom-surface of the battery made flat and smooth, for clean underbody aerodynamics. Electric efficiency with up to 10 years Extended Care For increased control and battery life, sensors monitor the voltage of each battery cell and block, and the battery cell temperature. With the advanced Battery Management System, this results in maximum usable battery cell capacity and an extended driving range. Cool air is circulated inside the battery pack for stable battery output even at high speed and during repeated charging. Heating elements under each battery module minimise cold weather impact on the driving range and ensure full power is available from the start. To replenish the battery, the UX 300e has an AC port on the right-side quarter panel for normal charging and a DC port on the left-side quarter panel for rapid charging. With the latter, the battery can be charged (in optimal conditions) from zero to 80 per cent in 80 minutes at 50kW. Electrical equipment such as air conditioning and audio can be used while the UX 300e is being charged. By using the Lexus Link app, UX 300e owners can check battery status, available driving range, and time remaining to complete charging. The app can also remotely schedule the charging start time, enabling owners to take advantage of off-peak energy tariffs. Lexus’s confidence in the durability of its all-electric vehicle technology is affirmed by a standard warranty for eight years or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first), covering degradation of BEV battery capacity below 70 per cent. This is complemented by a 5-year or 60,000-mile warranty on any functional defects in the BEV main battery. Extended BEV Care is available to cover main battery defects and capacity degradation below 70 per cent for up to 10 years or 100,000 miles, provided that regular maintenance programme health checks and servicing are completed at an authorised Lexus workshop. Lexus is confident, however, given its long experience in battery technologies, that actual capacity at that point should be greater than 85 per cent. SUV flexibility with hatchback-like driving characteristics The UX provides both the secure feeling of an SUV crossover and the driving pleasure of a sophisticated hatchback. The UX 300e engineering team worked closely with Lexus’s expert takumi master drivers to develop an array of new technologies designed specifically to deliver a Lexus Electrified driving experience. Lexus’s world-class refinement and quietness levels are combined with dynamic characteristics which prove that driving can be enjoyable with the higher-riding practicality of an SUV. The UX evokes the feel of a dynamic, luxury hatchback the moment the driver settles behind the wheel. Despite having the higher seating position associated with an SUV, the driving position has a relatively short hip-to-heel distance which gives the driver the feeling of being closer to the ground than in other SUVs. For passengers, the interior feels open and spacious, even though the UX 300e has relatively compact exterior dimensions. The UX is built on Lexus’s GA-C global architecture platform, a light structure which is also exceptionally rigid to sharpen responses to driver inputs. The new model enhances this by introducing a more rigid steel tailgate reinforcement and 20 additional spot welds on the back panel and side members. The UX’s 2,640mm wheelbase contributes to a smooth and stable ride, as well as cabin roominess, while the 10.4m kerb-to-kerb turning diameter makes manoeuvring and parking easy. Driving characteristics also benefit from the UX 300e’s low centre of gravity, partly achieved by locating the battery under the cabin, as well as by using lightweight materials – aluminium for the side doors, wings and bonnet, and composite materials for the tailgate. The battery’s location also increases boot space, compared to the UX 250h hybrid, from 320 to 367 litres (deck to luggage cover). Enhanced driving experience The UX 300e benefits from detail changes to enhance the driving experience. Fine-tuning the electric power steering and shock absorbers has sharpened the driving dynamics, as has increasing the body rigidity with additional spot-welding points. These alterations further improve the car’s planted feel and responsiveness, characteristics accentuated by the low centre of gravity and placement of the battery pack beneath the floor. Lexus Drive Mode Select allows the driving experience to be tailored to suit the driver’s preference or the journey. Normal drive mode provides an optimal balance between driving performance and range; ECO mode maximises energy savings across all driving conditions by smoothing the throttle response and moderating air conditioning operation; Sport mode delivers sharper throttle response and increased steering feel. Drivers can also switch between four levels of deceleration, using paddle shifts on the steering wheel, to suit the type of road, their natural driving style and their preferred feeling of vehicle control. These range from providing the driving feel of a conventional combustion engine vehicle to harnessing the more linear deceleration of a pure BEV. The optimum deceleration level also enhances control on snowy roads and other low-friction surfaces. A serene and healthy cabin Underfloor covers, which help suppress road noise, are one of the measures taken to achieve a serene and quiet cabin. Material in the wing liners helps absorb noise from the tyres’ contact with the road, small stones, dirt, and water; acoustic glass in the windows reduces high-frequency wind noise; and with the latest upgrades, extra sound insulation has been added in the body. Cabin quietness allows the UX 300e’s occupants to fully enjoy the clear, powerful sound of the 915W, 13-speaker Mark Levinson Premium Surround Sound System. Also, to ensure the wellbeing of everyone onboard, the UX 300e benefits from the latest generation nanoe™ X air purification technology. This introduces nano-sized water molecules into the ventilation airflow which contain microscopic hydroxyl radicals. These can deodorise bad odours, act against mould and inhibit viruses, bacteria, pollen, and allergens. Laboratory research has shown that in one hour, nanoe X can inhibit more than 99 per cent of viruses and bacteria and achieve a 1.8 reduction in odour intensity. By preventing moisture evaporation, the nano-sized water particles also keep skin smooth and well-hydrated. More information about Lexus’s use of nanoe X technology is available at https://media.lexus.co.uk/breathe-easy-feel-great-inside-your-lexus-with-nanoe-x/. New multimedia systems: easier to use, greater functionality The 2023 UX 300e features new multimedia systems – Lexus Link Connect on the entry model and Premium Pack and Lexus Link Pro on the Takumi Pack. Equipped with a touchscreen in place of the previous touchpad control, this is more intuitive to use than its predecessor, offers increased functionality, has greater connectivity and responds more quickly to commands. Screen sizes have been increased, from seven to eight inches (Lexus Link Connect), with sharper graphics, and from 10 to 12.3 inches (Lexus Link Pro), with high-definition. For easier interaction, the screen has been moved 143mm further forwards. A new voice recognition system includes the option of using the “Hey Lexus” on-board assistant. This responds to voice commands to make it easier to connect to phone calls, operate audio and climate controls and search the internet. The new voice recognition system is programmed to understand more conversational terms, to recognise whether it is the driver or front passenger speaking and to distinguish between background noise and commands so that it is no longer necessary to mute the audio. To make journey planning easier and help avoid traffic delays, “always connected” cloud-based navigation is provided as standard, giving access to real-time road and traffic information. Additionally, the Lexus Link Pro system includes embedded navigation, maintaining operation even if cloud connection is unavailable. To make it easy to find out about such things as local parking, charging points, charging speed and price per kWh, “Hey Lexus” can also be linked to cloud-based information. The new system provides smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay (wireless connection) or Android Auto (wired connection). Connectivity also extends to the Lexus Link smartphone app, which allows the driver to remotely lock or unlock the doors, trigger the hazard lights and set the air conditioning to cool or warm the cabin before getting into the car. The app can also check the battery’s charge-level, available range with the air-conditioning on or off and time remaining until charging is complete. The space on the centre console where the multimedia touchpad was previously located is now home to controls for the heated front seats or, where these are not specified, a small storage cubby. The console also houses a USB-A port for playback of high-resolution sound sources and two USB-C ports for device charging. A new illuminated tray in the console, in front of the air conditioning control panel, has the space to hold a large smartphone. The UX’s multimedia system can save up to three people’s customised settings for multimedia, audio, and navigation. Updates to the system software can be delivered over-the-air via the car’s upgraded DCM (Data Communication Module). Interior and exterior revisions The UX’s combination of smooth and perforated leather upholstery has a striking new geometric Kagome pattern, inspired by sashiko (“little stabs”) quilting technique. This is used for its strength and suppleness – with as many as 10 stitches per inch – in the making of martial arts uniforms. There is also a new Hazel colour option for all upholstery options – fabric and leather. In another aesthetic refinement, the dashboard trim has the look of washi paper grain, as seen in the sliding doors of traditional Japanese houses. The upper part of the instrument panel is now black in all trims and the push-start button silver. For the car’s exterior, there is a new paintwork option, Sonic Platinum, which uses Lexus’s advanced sonic paint technology. This special finish incorporates a layer just a few microns deep which brings the metallic flakes in the paint into closer and more uniform alignment, creating higher brilliance and deeper shading across the car’s bodywork. In another detail change, the hands-free power-operated rear tailgate now responds to the door-mounted switch without delay and moves more gently during the initial and final parts of opening and closing. Additional safety system features Upgrades have been made to the UX’s Lexus Safety System+. The car is now equipped with Intersection Turning Assist, which detects oncoming vehicles and pedestrians crossing in the opposite direction when turning at an intersection. Emergency Assist has been added, which automatically makes small corrective inputs to the steering to help prevent the vehicle from unintentionally departing from its lane. The Dynamic Radar Cruise Control has gained Curve Speed Reduction, which automatically adjusts the vehicle’s speed to the suit the radius of a bend in the road ahead. These additions complement the existing Lexus Safety System+ features: the Pre-Collision System can detect pedestrians at night and objects such as motorcycles in the car’s path during the day; Lane Tracing Assist helps the driver keep the vehicle centred in its lane and can provide support when driving through bends; and Road Sign Assist recognises traffic signs to provide information to the driver via the multi-information display or the optional head-up display. Other features which make driving easier include (according to model grade) a Panoramic View Monitor for a near-360° view around the car, to help when negotiating confined spaces; Parking Support Alert, which warns of an impending collision using clearance sonars; Lexus Parking Assist to help with reversing into parking spaces; Rear Cross Traffic Alert with auto-braking, which operates when the car is reversing; and a Blind Spot Monitor, which detects vehicles in adjacent lanes obscured from the driver’s sightline. A favourite among Lexus buyers The UX was Lexus’s best-selling model in the UK in 2022, with 3,767 sales, behind the all-new NX introduced that year. The UX 300e took more than 10 per cent of these – a proportion that is expected to rise in the coming years. UK pricing On-the-road prices for the UX 300e are as follows: – MODEL OTR PRICE UX 300e £47,495 UX 300e Premium Pack (17in wheels) £50,995 UX 300e Premium Pack (18in wheels) £51,745 UX 300e Takumi Pack £57,095
  20. Lexus has a proud history of pushing boundaries and challenging the status quo. Since its founding in 1989, it has repeatedly pioneered new thinking and new products that have changed people’s perceptions and reshaped the luxury car market. It has constantly evolved the concept of what luxury means, not just by creating desirable and exciting products, but also by redefining the complete ownership experience. Its record of achievement today welcomes a new name: the Lexus LBX. The all-new, self-charging hybrid electric LBX is the smallest Lexus yet, but fully deserving of its status as a landmark model, one which breaks down the traditional luxury hierarchy and which will be a game-changer for the brand in Europe. LBX stands for Lexus Breakthrough Crossover, a compact SUV that will extend Lexus’s brand appeal into new market territory. It embraces contemporary ideas in design and technology while maintaining the distinguishing Lexus qualities of luxury craftsmanship and omotenashi hospitality. This is a car that’s accessible and easy to live with, but which makes no compromises in quality and attention to detail: the essence of Lexus has been distilled into a smaller package, transcending customers’ traditional expectations of what a premium compact SUV can offer. It also breaks new ground by giving owners a wider range of design executions and specifications, providing them with more freedom to express their individual taste and sense of style. Full details of the UK line-up and specifications will be confirmed in due course but, true to Lexus’s commitment to “making luxury personal,” the LBX will be offered in different, refined, dynamic or sporty themes through styling details, colours, textures and finishes. The LBX is also a breakthrough for Lexus as a business in Europe. For the first time, Europe has been the lead global region for the development of a new Lexus vehicle. This influence will help the LBX become one of the best-sellers for the brand in Europe. The use of a three-letter name is significant – previously only the LFA supercar has enjoyed that distinction. The choice of the name LBX demonstrates Lexus’ commitment to and trust in its new model. Just as the LFA showed a different side to the brand in terms of attitude and performance, so the LBX will in its own way expand its reach and profile. As a new entry point to Lexus’s well-established SUV line-up, it offers strong appeal to a younger audience and those who may not have considered a Lexus before. It will be an attractive proposition to customers seeking to downsize or purchase a second vehicle, meeting their new lifestyle requirements. Chief Engineer Kunihiko Endoh comments: “Our aim was to challenge the conventional concept of a luxury car. We have thoroughly pursued a driving experience that enables a natural dialogue between the driver and their vehicle and a design that has a refined presence.” The LBX’s styling establishes a new Lexus identity with a “Resolute Look” frontal design that reinterprets the famous spindle grille. While the exterior dimensions are more compact than any other Lexus, the look is muscular and powerful. Inside, the emphasis is on driver engagement with a focused driver’s cockpit based on Lexus’s Tazuna concept, and on creating a light, open feel with excellent visibility and an instrument panel that wraps around smoothly into the door panels. Exterior design: a new Lexus identity Lexus’s design ambition was to create a car that is more relaxed than formal in character, displaying an authentic, effortless style that people will instantly feel a connection with. The most significant aspect of the design is a new frontal arrangement that “breaks” the spindle grille – a design hallmark for the past decade – leading Lexus into a new era. Koichi Suga, General Manager Lexus Design, explains: “We have ‘deconstructed’ the spindle grille to make way for a new frontal design. We’ve succeeded in creating a new face identity that’s completely different from before yet is instantly recognisable as a Lexus.” The grille has been unified in a single trapezoid shape, positioned below a narrow aperture that runs beneath the leading edge of the bonnet, linking the slim headlight units. The design draws on the heritage of Lexus’s “Resolute Look.” Introduced with the LF-S concept car of 2003, this became a signature styling cue for Lexus production models from the early 2000s. The seamless, frameless grille generates the lines of the LBX’s spindle body, contributing to the car’s strong, dynamic stance. It is also aerodynamically efficient, helping smooth airflow over and around the car. The new headlight design creates a strong visual signature, with the daytime running lights and turn indicators integrated in bi-functional units. With this new arrangement, the lights’ distinctive L-shape has been changed to face out rather than inwards, to match the direction of each indicator light. Following the principles of Lexus Next Chapter Design, the car’s identity and proportions are rooted in the driving experience it delivers. The front pillars have been pulled back, making the cabin appear compact and the bonnet longer for a sporty profile. The flared wings express power and accentuate the large (17 or 18-inch) wheels and tyres, while short overhangs and a bold tightening of the area around the rear doors evoke nimble, dynamic performance. The rear of the car also projects a strong stance. The licence plate has been moved down to the bumper so that the LEXUS lettered signature on the back door is more prominent on the clean expanse of the back door. Similarly, the latest evolution of the Lexus signature L-shaped light bar has greater visual impact, with the turn signal and reversing lamps having a subdued presence when not illuminated. The LBX is 4,190mm long, 1,825mm wide and 1,545mm high and has a 2,580mm wheelbase. The low-slung bonnet, belt mouldings flush with the body, a gate-style rear roof spoiler and precise light cluster designs enhance aerodynamic performance and contribute to the LBX’s efficiency, stability and responsive performance. The exterior colour choices include vivid shades and Lexus’s deep-lustre sonic finishes. Certain versions of the LBX can be specified with bi-tone paintwork, combining any colour option with a contrast black roof. Dynamic performance: a new Lexus platform The LBX is the first Lexus model to be constructed on a variation of the GA-B small car global architecture platform. It has been fundamentally adjusted to meet Lexus’s requirements, giving the new car the core benefits of a low centre of gravity, wide tracks, short overhangs and a highly rigid body. It is also the foundation of the car’s fun-to-drive character, helping secure the Lexus Driving Signature in the smallest package yet. This helps create a natural dialogue between driver and car that ensures confidence, control and comfort at all times. Chief Engineer Endoh explains: “To realise the Lexus sense of being at one with the car, we worked to achieve nimble driving that maximises the benefits of the car’s small size and light weight. At the same time, we focused more than ever on honing the fundamental characteristics without relying on electronic controls.” The body is strengthened with structural adhesives and short-pitch welding, and strategic placing of bracing and reinforcements. At the same time, vehicle weight has been kept down by the use of lightweight materials, including an aluminium bonnet and moulded resin wheel arches, rockers and lower door sections. Strong yet light hot-stamped materials are used in the centre pillars and bumper reinforcement. Setting the hip-point as low as 285 mm helps make the driver feel more at one with their vehicle, while maintaining an excellent view from the wheel, particularly when driving in city traffic. Front and rear suspension systems are designed for high rigidity and light weight, giving the LBX agile, stable cornering and steering response with smooth ride comfort. All versions feature a MacPherson strut design at the front; front-wheel drive models use a rear torsion beam while the all-wheel drive LBX has a double-wishbone arrangement. The electronically controlled braking system includes Vehicle Braking Posture Control. This automatically balances front and rear brake force distribution to suppress pitching and maintain linear, reassuring performance. It also helps reduce vehicle roll when cornering, keeping the car comfortable and stable and filtering out vibrations. Powertrain: a new generation of Lexus Hybrid Drive The LBX is powered by a new generation, self-charging Lexus hybrid electric system featuring a compact and lightweight 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine. The principal hybrid system components have undergone a substantial redesign, including the transaxle and power control unit, to improve efficiency, reduce losses, save weight and reduce size. The technology developments have allowed Lexus to focus on more rewarding performance and a level of driving pleasure that was not possible with previous systems. Maximum output from the full hybrid system is 134bhp/100kW with peak torque of 185Nm. The engine operates with world-class thermal efficiency, supported by high-speed combustion technology and design features such as straight intake ports and laser-clad intake valve seats. Other key contributors include ultra-lightweight pistons engineered for operation at high rpm and electronic intelligent variable valve-timing. The revised power control unit is mounted directly above the transaxle. The transaxle itself has a new design which helps give the LBX a low bonnet line. Further space is saved by the two motor-generators being located on separate shafts, reducing the drivetrain’s overall length. The NiMH battery is an all-new bi-polar unit with reduced weight and a more compact design, yet it delivers higher output with much quicker response. Thus, it contributes to the LBX’s performance, with instant, powerful acceleration like that of battery electric vehicle, as well as its fuel efficiency. It benefits from a redesigned cooling system to help prolong battery life and performance. The powertrain is tuned for enjoyable performance, whether driving around town or on winding country roads, with faithful handling and a linear acceleration feel that is more closely aligned to the driver’s use of the accelerator pedal. Drivability is also enhanced by Hybrid System Control that closely matches engine sound and acceleration. Thanks to the hybrid system upgrades, all-electric EV driving can be enjoyed at higher speeds and over longer distances, maximising the LBX’s efficiency. The LBX’s authentic SUV quality includes the option of Lexus’ E-Four all-wheel drive, which introduces an additional electric motor on the rear axle. When pulling away, cornering and driving on low-grip surfaces, the system automatically directs drive force to the rear wheels, helping keep the vehicle stable and maintaining driver confidence. The LBX’s luxury status is witnessed by the lengths Lexus has gone to manage noise and vibration (NVH). These include adding a balancer shaft to the engine to reduce vibration that can generate a booming effect in the cabin. Special attention has been paid to the doors where damping sheets have been introduced to suppress high frequency noise but enhance low frequency noise to give a distinct and pleasing sound. To counter vibration and road noise from the roof, high-damping mastic has been used together with an extensive silencer made of a highly effective insulating material. Other measures include a seal around the entire edge of the bonnet and noise insulating and absorbing sheets, liners, mouldings and foam in key areas throughout the car. Beneath the vehicle, high-damping and structural adhesives play their part in reducing noise and vibration, while also contributing the car’s overall rigidity. Interior design: simplicity and elegance, craftsmanship and high quality Lexus designers sought to create a simple and refined interior that creates the feel and atmosphere of a higher segment model. This effect is founded on three elements: good visibility with an open view out and a simple, smooth instrument panel; the sense of wide interior space; and a centre console with a commanding presence. The premium quality and attention to detail is witnessed in a choice of upholsteries and trims with strong visual and tactile appeal. As well as top-quality semi-aniline leather, the options include a vegan-friendly interior that uses synthetic leather and materials for the seat coverings and steering wheel, shift lever and door trims. The LBX also features new Tsuyusami charcoal trim inlays, created using a new film technique that uses multiple layers to give a highly textured appearance with a sense of depth. Ambient lighting adds to the omotenashi effect have undergone a substantial redesign, including the transaxle and power control unit, to improve efficiency, reduce losses, save of people being made welcome and feeling completely at home in the vehicle. Highlighting different parts of the cabin, the lighting design provides a range of 50 colour options, curated in themes that evoke different moods. The driver’s cockpit is an interpretation of Lexus’s Tazuna concept, first introduced on the NX mid-size SUV. This positions principal controls and information sources immediately around the driver, so their operation only requires minimal movements of hand or eye. This helps keep the driver focused on the task of driving, with least distraction. The position and angle of the steering wheel were precisely calculated to give the driver a rewarding sense of control. Here, the Tazuna concept is enhanced on certain versions with a new, 12.3-inch full digital instrument display, featured in a Lexus for the first time. The lay-out and prominence of the meters and data change according to the drive mode selected and can be customised to suit individual preferences. A head-up display is also available on certain versions. Thanks to the LBX’s compact size, almost every inch of the car can be seen from the steering wheel, adding to the confidence, comfort and control the driver enjoys with the Lexus Driving Signature. The contouring of the bonnet and the shape and position of the front pillars reduce the blind sports and give an extended downward view that helps the driver steer more precise lines. To help maintain a wide, clear view, the horizontal instrument panel has a clean and simple design. At each side, its form flows into the door panel, giving a sense of wrapping around the front seat occupants, so the feel is expansive yet encompassing. The continuous line created by this design also helps the driver sense the degree of vehicle roll when driving through bends. A low hip-point adds to the driver’s sense of being at one with their car, while ample front knee-space is provided. To ensure a good view out for everyone on board, the rear seats are set slightly higher than those at the front. The centre console has a strong presence with the large multimedia touchscreen tilted back so that it integrates smoothly with the structure. The unit has upholstered side pads and houses two cupholders and multiple storage points and USB ports for device connection and charging. The load compartment offers up to 332 litres (FWD models with rear seats in place) of space – room enough for two 75-litre cases to be carried beneath the folding tonneau cover. Multimedia and infotainment The LBX is equipped with the latest Lexus Link Connect system, operated via a 9.8-inch touchscreen. The system provides cloud-based navigation, optimising journey planning with real-time information on traffic events and delays. Further convenience is provided by the “Hey Lexus” on-board assistant which responds to voice commands from both driver and front seat passenger. Smartphone integration is enabled using wireless or wired connections for Apple CarPlay, or a wired link for Android Auto. Further convenience is provided by an optional digital key. Compatible with both Apple and Android smartphones devices, this allows owners to use their smartphone to unlock and start their car. They don’t have to take their phone out of their pocket or bag, just having it on their person is sufficient. They can also share the digital key when other people need to access or use the vehicle. In common with the latest new Lexus models, the LBX offers seamless over-the-air software updates for its multimedia and safety systems, so owners can benefit from upgrades without having to organise a visit to a Lexus workshop. Mark Levinson, Lexus’ exclusive audio partner, has designed an optional premium system for the car, featuring an array of 13 optimally positioned speakers. They include a subwoofer integrated in the back door, avoiding any loss of space in the load compartment. Model range: introducing LBX atmospheres With the LBX, Lexus will offer an even wider range of design executions and specifications to suit different customers’ lifestyle preferences. The UK line-up will be designed around a choice of four model “atmospheres”: Elegant and Relax which focus on a refined feel, and Emotion and Cool which have a sportier, more dynamic character. Each has been designed with a different type of customer in mind. Emotion and Cool models stand out with bi-tone paintwork and 18-inch alloy wheels with a machined finish. The Elegant and Relax versions have a monotone exterior paint finish and glossy 17 or 18-inch alloys. Where the interior specifications are concerned, the Emotion model comes with perforated synthetic leather upholstery with red accents and contrast stitching on the seats, centre console and door trim. The LBX Cool – the top dynamic-themed model – has a Ultrasuede and leather bi-tone black/dark grey interior with copper details and stitching. Different moods are evoked by the Elegant and Relax atmospheres. Synthetic leather in Black, a subtle Forest Brown shade or Ammonite Sand features in the LBX Elegant, for the door panels, instrument panel and console pads as well as the seat upholstery. For the Relax model, the choice is Saddle Tan or Black semi-aniline leather with distinctive Tatami stitching creating a strong contrast. In addition to the four atmosphere models there is an entry level LBX which, comes with advanced technology features as standard rather than extra-cost options, in contrast to some competitor models. Notably these include the extensive active safety and driver assistance systems included in the latest generation Lexus Safety System+. The entry model and the Emotion and Elegant versions can be specified with a vegan-friendly interior with no natural leather products. Equipment option highlights include a 12.3-inch Tazuna concept digital instrument display, head-up display, remote parking, digital key, Mark Levinson premium surround sound audio, Panasonic’s nanoe™-X air purification technology and a power back door. Safety and driver assistance The LBX benefits from the comprehensive safety and driver assistance provisions of the latest generation of Lexus Safety System+. This equips the car with multiple systems to detect accident risks, alert the driver and automatically provide steering, braking and drive force control if required to help avoid or lessen the consequences of a collision. Key elements include a Pre-Collision System with Intersection Turn Assist, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Tracing Assist/Lane Keep Assist and Road Sign Assist. Additional items that support safer driving and manoeuvring and reduce the burden on the driver include Lexus’s e-latch electric door release system with Safe Exit Assist, a driver monitor, intelligent parking sensors with auto-braking, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and a Blind Spot Monitor. An extended safety package will be available on certain versions. The driver enjoys better visibility in poor weather conditions with a new wet arm wiper, as featured previously on Lexus’ flagship LC and LS models. This distributes washer fluid from the wiper itself, giving more thorough and immediate windscreen cleaning performance. UK reservations and orders Following its world debut, the LBX will go into production in late 2023. UK customers will be able to place reservations from July this year, ahead of pricing being confirmed and orders being accepted from October. First vehicle deliveries are expected from March 2024.
  21. Unfortunately, the system sends out reminders some time ahead but it also uses the American system of dates and in this case it is the 8th of June for renewal
  22. In 2012, Lexus caused a sensation with the unveiling of its LF-LC concept at the Detroit motor show, its vision for a radical new flagship coupe. Four years later, the concept became reality with an almost unchanged design for the production-ready LC. Now that model’s award-winning history reaches its pinnacle with the new LC 500 Ultimate Edition This special version of the LC 500 Coupe and Convertible will be available in strictly limited numbers worldwide – each model’s status recorded on an individually numbered plaque mounted on the centre console. The stand-out feature of the Ultimate Edition is its dedicated Hakugin White paintwork, which has an elegant matt finish. This strikes a sharp contrast with black detailing around the muscular bodywork, including the grille, door mirrors headlamp surrounds and exhaust baffle, and the 21-inch, five-spoked forged alloy wheels. This strong look draws heritage parallels with Lexus’s past coupe master, the LFA supercar. The interior also has an exclusive finish with upholstery in a deep Kachi-Blue. Luxurious semi-aniline leather is featured in the Coupe and a combination of suede-like Alcantara and leather in the Convertible. The Ultimate Edition’s special qualities are not limited to styling. The car’s aerodynamic performance has been honed with the world-first integration of airflow-controlling canard fins in the front bumper moulding. On the Coupe, the aero management package includes an auto-deploying black carbon rear wing. The wing’s shape was defined with input from the world of competition flying through Lexus’s support of aerobatic and race pilot Yoshihide Muroya and his team. Lexus’s Takumi master technicians were recruited to tune the V8 engine for smoother rotation and the rear differential for even sharper acceleration response. Both LC 500 Coupe and Convertible use a 457bhp powerplant, with a 10-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission. The Ultimate Edition’s equipment specification matches the top LC Sport Pack+ with the addition of a colour head-up display, Panoramic View Monitor and 13-speaker Mark Levinson Reference Audio system, plus “Limited Edition” Lexus scuff plates. Production of the Ultimate Edition will commence in September. For UK customers, fewer than 10 examples will be available, priced £116,000 for the Coupe and £122,000 for the Convertible.
