  1. I've had my IS for over a year now, and the EML has been on pretty much all of that time. (Yes, I'm a bad man, I know I know...) I had it reset twice and it stayed off for about two weeks (not a lot of driving was done in this time though), but eventually came back on again. I think the code was catalyst on bank one below efficiency threshold or something similar - it's quite a common one anyway. This, plus the blue smoke on cold start ups indicated worn valve seals to most people I've talked to, including a few on here. But then today, driving home I refuelled and accidentally put super unleaded in, something that I have never done before with my IS. After a couple of miles, the EML turned off! And stayed off for the 80 miles I was driving home for! I waited until it was cold and then started it up and drove it around for a few miles..........no blue smoke on start up, and still no EML! Now, I'll check to see that the sodding thing hasn't just burned out just because it's been on for so long, but if not, has anyone else experienced anything similar? I usually don't bother with super unleaded but I might try it for a while if these are the kind of things that happen!
  2. Sorry to dig up a dead and buried thread, but is importing spark plugs from the US a good idea? I know they might be cheaper but are they still the same rating etc? We have stricter emission laws over here and so our engines must be cleaner, spark plugs making a difference to that. Sorry, that's just a really long way of asking if they are the same and don't give our cars any problems? I've found 6 ik20s for £33 delivered and tracked so I was pondering getting them over here ready for when I do my valves and timing belt etc
  3. True, but I know that my engine (apart from the smoking habit) is fine, so I'd rather stick with it. I think I'll stick with just doing the head work and leave the piston rings though, it will be too expensive and time consuming doing the piston rings so I'll just have to hope that it is just the valve stem seals.
  4. Ok will do, I'm doing a timing belt and water pump change, and the other belts too. Is there anything else i should be thinking about doing while I'm at it? a And i realised what I was doing wrong before, I've now found plenty of head sets :D
  5. I'm starting to look at changing my piston rings and valve seals, as my IS puffs out blue smoke for a couple of seconds when cold, (definitely blue) which I understand to be either of the above, so I thought I might as well do them both at the same time, saves me taking the engine apart twice if I just do one and it turns out to be the other. Problem is, (maybe due to my rubbish searching skills) I can't find any new valve seal sets, and the piston rings I can find are around £145. Are there any other places than ebay that will do me the rings for cheaper? Are there any places that do the stem seals at all? (Hopefully for a reasonable price? I'm better off sticking a new head gasket on while I'm at it aren't I?
  6. Has anyone got any recommendations on where to buy all the parts required from? I'm looking into doing mine soon but don't know the best place to get the right parts from.
  7. I've been advised to use Forte seal conditioner with an oil change, so when I get round to it I'll let you know how it goes!
  8. Agreed, I would be very wary of buying it unless you know what the EML is on for. And don't take it on faith if the seller tells you what it is, make sure you have it read for yourself somehow if possible, otherwise you could be looking at some costly repairs!
  9. I don't want to start a new thread with this but I have the same issue with my IS. From cold, it puffs out some blue smoke for a few seconds, but after a minute it clears. It also seems to smoke more the longer I leave it. Any idea on how much the stem seals would be? And where to get them from? I also read somewhere (I think on another thread on here) that you need to buy some grommets too? Only other issue with the car is that it has the infamous error 3 code, and the belt was squealing a bit when loaded with people and shopping, but it was in 35-ish degree heat, so I'm not worrying too much about that.
