  1. Could a shudder be caused by the rear brakes? I had the same symptoms and replaced the front discs and pads. It didn't really solve the problem but I know the rears are pretty shot. I will check the run out of the fronts first as I remember that there is a very tight tolerance of around 0.002"
  2. I have just removed my steering column again to try and solve my telescopic motor action problem. Firstly i had the motor spindle on the nut such that the motor thought it was almost fully retracted when the column was actually extended. I sorted this out and now I have full travel in and out of the steering column with the motor rotating but only if you push or pull on the steering wheel as the action is so stiff that the motor cannot move it without help. It seems that the two locking pads that are screwed into the side of the column are clamping the thing so tight it cannot move properly. Thing is they are sprung loaded and there is no adjustment! I am at a loss again. I think that another removal and a closer inspection may be required. I am sure that I am doing something wrong as it all looks good and undamaged!
  3. My LS400 is a late Mk4 and has the same steering rack as the LS430, with the flat stepper motors. As it tilts OK at the moment I haven't done anything more. When I get a clear and dry afternoon I will have another go at this.
  4. It all went back as it should according to the Lexus service manual. I was just surprised how much physical effort is needed to slide the assembly in and out when the motor is detached. It was a smooth movement but there is no adjustment for this. The inner tube slides in the outer tube and has spring loaded wedges which apply a given force I assume to stop rattles and vibration. I will try and get a replacement motor first and try that. I expect the motors are pretty powerful, and considering the gearing using a spiral drive shaft, they can apply a fair bit of load!
  5. I have a 2000 'V' LS400 and I originally had a problem with the tilt action of the steering. This was purely down to the motor which I replaced. Now the telescopic action is playing up. It seemed that it had got tight as the motor would try but couldn't move the steering. If I pushed or pulled on the steering wheel at the same time, it would move. I have just removed, stripped, and re-greased the steering column and sure enough it had pretty much seized up, but even after stripping, cleaning and regreasing, the telescopic action is still the same. I am wondering if the motor is failing and not producing enough torque for the job? Does anyone else have experience of this? Is the telescopic action always stiff as even after regreasing the sliding tube and splined shaft, it still takes some force to move it?
  6. The shaft in question is 45260 at the mid bottom of your diagram. It has a universal joint half way down. Just below this (where the line from 45260 points) is a cup which is the point at which the shaft passes through the bulkhead. The other end and UJ 45209 is in the engine bay. The shaft goes through a rubber mount, 45025DE at the lower left of the picture. As the end part of the shaft is between two uj's which are to all intent and purpose fixed points, I cannot see where the movement comes from?
  7. I have a 200 LS400 Mk4. I have a steering rattle that seems to be the No.2 intermediate shaft, which is the one with a universal joint on each end and goes through the bulkhead. When I push it with my hand it has noticeable play, and when I put my foot on it, the noise goes away. I have looked at a parts book but I cannot work out how this shaft works and how it can have play in it. Has anyone else had this issue, and can explain what the wear is?
  8. I just saw a Ford Capri 1.6 Mk3 sell for £13800. Ford escorts regularly fetch over £10K Very few large Mercedes ever get below £4-5k. I have a 1970 Rover 3500S which is a show winner. The value is not great however. Historically this is because the Rover club thought that keeping valuations low would attract people to the car and keep them popular and on the road for the future. Sadly what actually happened was that the car magazines used these valuations in their published car value tables and insurance companies followed suit with agreed values. This killed any chance of these cars being valuable. The knock on effect is that no one makes spare parts as the cars aren't worth keeping on the road and restoration is not cost effective. They were generally scrapped when anything went wrong with them. How many do you see today on the road? It would be sad to see the LS go that way, but it is already in 'banger' class with values as low as a few hundred pounds so I suspect it is too late!
  9. Why does everyone seem so keen for their cars to be worthless? Surely it is a good thing that the prices are up a bit? Low prices mean shoddy maintenance as it is not worth looking after. This leads to the end of the line for a lot of models.
  10. I know this is an old thread but I am suffering from the same problem. My brake pedal is hard when the engine is off but when the engine is started, the pedal slowly moves right to the floor. It takes about 4-5 seconds to do this. There cannot be anything wrong with the master cylinder as this would show up whether the engine was running or not. I have no fluid leaks and the servo is operating perfectly. When driving, the pedal doesn't move to the floor under braking but I haven't tried braking really hard yet. I suspect air somewhere in the system and I am going to bleed the system fully this weekend. I notice in the manual that the brake actuator should also be bled as well as each wheel. Could this be the problem perhaps?
  11. I have looked at pictures on eBay of steering columns for sale. The earlier cars are different to the Mk4. The motor is removable and can be disassembled as I have already done this. It is a strange motor as the armature is a flat disc with a disc of magnets sitting on top. All the parts look good but when assembled it turns about 10 degrees and stops. I can't see what is wrong with it so a replacement is probably the quickest option.
  12. I have just bought an LS400 Mk4 and the steering wheel will go in and out but not up and down. I have traced the fault to the motor which has seized and is not reparable. Does anyone know if the motor is common across all models of LS400 as there are some being broken on eBay but not a Mk4.
  13. I bought this LS400 on Tuesday and gave £3k for it. I am in Bristol! It was priced high to allow for a possible part exchange, but I paid cash. Only issues are Sat Nav doesn't work but I have sourced a replacement unit so should soon be mended, and steering goes in and out but not up and dow, although it does make a noise. Paint is excellent. Wheels need refubishment as lacquer has lifted on the rims, and tyres will need replacing soon.
