  1. This is my personal feeling, but I feel as if this is a half baked attempt by Lexus. I fully appreciate that this is a big, heavy car, but a 200 mile range is not great in the grand scheme of things. I'm not sure about the Battery chemistry, but if it's the case that you are keeping it between 20 and 80% and people are getting 200 miles out of a full charge then 160 is what you might expect.

When you have Kia, Tesla and many others claiming more miles, I'm not sure how Toyota, who were one of the first to dip their toe in the electric market with Hybrid batteries are so far behind. They haven't got anything which can do 300+ miles.

For most of my driving, yes 200 mile range would be good, but for the times we go to Southampton, we would potentially make it there, but then have to charge on the way back. Recently, we went on a cruise from Southampton. I am glad that we didn't take the EV. On the way down, we stopped at Leigh Delamere services to find their chargers were all in use. Their fast chargers were labelled as 25kw on Zap Map. There was a queue of EV waiting to use them too. On the return journey, in Membrey, the electric charge points were out of action for some unknown reason.

  2. I thought i'd start a thread based around the CANbus fix through Lexus.

Personally, i'm very disappointed in Lexus. I know they are not the only manufacture to be troubled by this, however, over the years, I have avoided getting an RX due to CAT thefts, and this is something else which is just tainting the brand. I fully acknowledge that they cannot contact every owner as DVSA do not consider it to be a safety issue, however, they could easily have sent a letter to anyone who has had their vehicle serviced in the last few years with them.

Annoyingly, this fix is going to be chargeable. If anyone has had it, could they state how much it has cost them? My nearest dealership is an hour away, which means that if this fix is completed, it will take most of the day to complete.

My concern is, however, that this is still going to have an impact on these cars. Once this fix is put in place, how will an opportunist know it's not worth their time without dismantling your bumper as a fix has been completed? Maybe a window sticker is needed 😉

I used to get this on the RX, mainly in the winter months. It’s cause was rain drops on the sensors or dirt.

Im not sure that Vaseline is a long term benefit since dirt could stick to it. I just used a decent polish which allowed the rain to run off and helped stop the road dirt from staying on there.

You can tell if this is the problem just by wiping the sensors when it happens. If they work ok after wiping then rain/first is the issue

I just find it poor form on Lexus' behalf. This didn't happen on my previous IS, and didn't happen on my Volvo before that. If they were really that concerned about putting the customers first, then they would do something about it. Unfortunately, this only applies for safety recalls e.g. the Toyota airbag saga.

  4. I meant to post this last month, however life got in the way. Whenever we go on holiday, we always take the wife's car. She has a Tiguan which has loads of space, and I have the 'smaller' NX. This year with a baby in tow, we had a bit more than we normally take. Usually, we put one case in the car, one on the back seat, however this year we had a bit more to take. I tried to get the cases in to the Tiguan, and it wasn't having any of it. I went to switch the cases with my parents as they have smaller cases. To my surprise, the NX's boot swallowed both cases side by side. A quick change of registration for the parking, and the NX was loaded up.

I was utterly amazed on how the NX took everything so well. We tethered everything so that it wouldn't move and made our way to Southampton. Just for reference, there are two large cases, a normal size case on top, a carry on flight case, holdall and a backpack. I could have probably still fitted a bit more down the sides too. The Tiguan is definitely bigger, and had more leg room, but cargo space, not a chance. Well done NX!

  5. I thought that too, as most of my other cars have had some sort of camber, however, it seems that only the driver's side rear tyre is starting to wear on the inside.

To be fair, the guys in Kwik Fit did explain that if they were to change anything then everything would need to be re-aligned, however they said that this could have an adverse effect on the lane keeping assist. I didn't do anything with it, however my service is due next month, so I was thinking of asking them to look at, however I don't want them to charge £100 just to say yes It's out, we can't adjust, that's how it is, but buy a new tyre.

  6. Last month I had my MOT. Whilst the car was on the ramp the tester commented that the inner rear drivers tyre was starting to wear and that I should get the tracking adjusted.

I took it to Kwik Fit for them to check it. The front was spot on but the back was out on both wheels. The guys in Kiwk fit said that they couldn’t adjust it as it was a dealer only kind of thing.

So, has anyone had this done in the past? How much would you expect to pay for it? I can scan the print out in if anyone would like to see how far it was out.

  7. The thing that you have to remember is this... when reviewers look at the car, they typically thrash them around a race track, and complete lots of standing starts etc; that's not how I drive.

I drive normally, from 0 - 20, then 20-30 or 50-70 on the motorway. The CVT is excellent for that. The CVT is great for smooth driving. My wife has a VW Tiguan with the DSG box. It's smooth, however the CVT is smoother. The DSG gets flustered at a roundabout. If you creep forward in the VW, it will change to second gear, then if you need to go quickly, it will try and spool the turbo up try to move, realise it can't get off quickly and then change down. We have been caught out a few times like this, meanwhile the CVT just works.

It's worth remembering these 'self-charging' hybrids are really only glorified stop-start systems, not meant to be driven on pure electric for any appreciable distance, think manoeuvring on one's driveway or in a car park.

The new NX450+ is a step toward full electric driving being a plug-in hybrid and a much bigger Battery. Best of both worlds at the moment, giving a decent EV range (think short trip to the shops or urban commute of 40miles) but still has the 'self-charge' fall-back to further when needed. What I don't know is do they have a separate electric powered heater for the cabin? I know one can pre-warm the car but otherwise the ICE will power up to provide warmth, even if it doesn't actually drive the wheels.

Apparently not. It uses the ICE if you want heat.

But you aren’t setting the temperature of the air coming out of the vents, you are setting the temperature you want the cabin to be. The temperature of the air coming out of the vents will be dependent upon how cold or warm the cabin is at the time.

Yes, however, when I'm cold in the car, I would expect setting it to 25, it blows out warm air? Or am I missing a concept here?

If the air coming out of the vents is 34C, pretty soon the air throughout the cabin is likely to be approaching 34C.

If you've got an old-fashioned room thermometer (rather than the gun style one in the picture) you could use it to find out what the temperature is in the middle of the cabin, away from the vents. It would be interesting to know what the cabin temperature actually is after a 15-20 minute drive.

I think the design philosophy of the climate control is to make it as imperceptible as possible, whereas it sounds as if you'd like hot air coming out of the face vents, which is the opposite of what Lexus designers are trying to achieve.

It's like the difference between standing in front of a roaring log fire in a cold drafty castle compared with being in a modern air conditioned room set to keep the air at a steady 22C and whatever a comfortable humidity level is. You can certainly feel the log fire. But you don't really notice the effect of the air conditioned room. Lexus is trying to achieve the air conditioned room effect not the log fire effect.

So it would be really interesting to know what the temperature in the cabin is after a 15-20 minute drive with the climate control set to Auto, 22 or 23C, and with no other buttons pressed after pressing Auto.

I'm guessing from your experiment that the temperature will be around 22C. But there won't be any hot air coming out of the face vents. The hot air will be coming out towards your feet. Instead, there will be cool air coming out of the face vents, as DonC says above, to avoid making the driver drowsy.

yes, maybe. As I suffer from raynaud's, I usually have the vents pointed at the steering wheel to warm my hands. The heated steering wheel is lovely too. I guess its just a different car, different design.

I got the engine up to temperature and then ran it a good few minutes to make sure the bulk temperature of the engine and whatever other components that get hot did do.  The outside temperature is 6C.  I put the transmission in sport so i could see the rpm and set the heater to max on both sides and the direction from the face vents  as shown - AC on.  Full throttle produced 2500 rpm and after 90 seconds the temperature at the vent was hot to the touch.   I must say that when I let my foot off, the engine shut down and and the temperature quickly fell to warm.   It’s not very scientific but I measured the temperature at the vent at the hottest as shown too.
