  1. Hello, Sorry if this has been posted before, but I have tried the search without success. I need to find a pair of centre caps for the GS430 18" original sports alloys. Two of them on my dads car have been broken (since they are only plastic) around the screw that holds them in place. I have previously bought them from lexus, but when we just spoke to them they said the caps had been discontinued, and we'd have to by them together with a new alloy for £300+ each. Does anyone know where I could get a pair of them from? Thanks Paul
  2. I don't think the GS300 mk1 alloys will fit the IS300 very well. We put the 18" x 8.5" gs sport alloys on my brothers is300, and the offset seems wrong and the alloys are a little on the wide side. I'd definately say the 10" wide rear alloys won't fit the IS300. Paul
  3. Cheers for the replies guys, much appreciated. I don't think its a wheel bearing, there isn't any noticable play in the wheels when its jacked up, and theres no uneven tyre wear. Don't think its the brake shoes catching, I have replaced both the rear discs and shoes in vein hoping it would get rid of the noise, but no luck, also have adjusted the shoes as best I can several times, still no joy. I do keep thinking it could be that though. Now then... the centre bearing in the prop shaft, hypothetically if that was worn would I be able to hear it as the noise I've described? It isn't excessively worn, but I can move the prop shaft about inside it, only fractions of an inch, but I'm sure its enough. Also if I grab the front of the prop shaft before the centre bearing, and grab the rear of the prop shaft and turn them back and fourth in opposite directions, I can generate the ringing sound (just thankful its not my gearbox :) ) How much do you think it'll cost for a new centre bearing, and/or a new prop shaft? Paul
  4. Hi guys, I've not been on for a while, I'm actually planning on selling my GS300 sport, but unfortunately it still has a fault which is starting to get gradually worse. The best I can describe it is as a bearing type noise, it seems to be rotational, like (and don't laugh) a wubb wubb wubb noise, which varies with speed. I've jacked up the car and turned the rear wheels (one at a time) and I can't feel any play in the wheels as if the bearing(s) are worn, lexus have even looked, but they can't find the fault either... However earlier, I noticed if I rotated the wheels backwards and then forwards quickly I could hear a clunking/ringing noise coming from the geabox, upon closer inspection if I grab the prop shaft just behind the gearbox any slight rotation creates the same noise. Is this a noise that should happen on the GS300 drivetrain? or could this be the source of my rotational noise? Just to add the car has only done 85,000 miles since new, regularly serviced, and to my disappointment only has this fault holding me back from selling it. It has the 10" wide rear wheels, and all the tyres have even wear. I've tried balancing the wheels, over and over, I've rotated the wheels, and the sound doesn't change, I've put the 8.5" wide alloys on the rear, and still no change in the sound. Any opinions, or advice would be greatly appreciated, and could someone with a GS300 MK1 without this wubb wubb wubb noise check the output shaft on the back of their gearbox to see if it clunks or rings? Thank you in advance Paul
  5. It could be, but I'm unsure, I've not really had the chance to study the different types of dash between the models, but I doubt this is the only one of its type, perhaps there was a cut off in 1995 of the older style 2 board type and the newer style single board dash. All I know is the dash I have has a different circuit to the one in the link above. It may also be that people with this type of dash haven't suffered the same fault, so it hasn't been pointed out before?? I did notice the dash in a 1994 is wired differently to a 1995 dash according to the american/canadian wiring diagrams I've managed to get hold of, so it looks more likely lexus, well toyota, did revise the dash. Other manufacturers have done like Honda as I've noticed several different types in the same model. Thats the reason I was offering the pictures, so anyone who was curious could have a look. edit: - If I recall correctly there was a model change in 1995, the revised some other points about the LS400 although I can't remember them now. Paul
  6. No offence taken, I was merely pointing out that it "appears" lexus have revised the design of the dash between models, the 1994-5 M reg dash I have gotten hold of today doesn't have the same style caps, or two seperate boards. It just has standard electrolytic capacitors, therefore I'd have thought the same fix might not work on the newer dashes, the cause could be something else, but I guess you've played with all the different types. The pictures I was offering were to show this type of dash board and the capacitors on it should anyone be curious, I was only trying to help Paul
  7. Hey all, looks like lexus revised the design of the circuit on the ls400 dash. I've just been to a local scrappies and got the dash out of a 1994-95 M reg LS400 which had an engine fire? Anyway it looks nothing like the circuit in the link, its actually just one main board, with two membranes running from it. As far as I can tell there isn't anything wrong with this dash. Not sure on the mileage recorded on it, I'm gonna try to generate inputs to it to get it to come on. Note I don't have an LS400, and by the looks of it this dash won't fit my gs300 so it may be for sale should anyone need one. The part number is 83010-50650. You may want to check it'll work in your car first, and I'll supply pictures of it for anyone interested. Paul Edit:- Got it to come on with help of a wiring diagram i've found elsewhere... but its coming on as it should and displaying 99738 miles, looks a lot cooler than a gs300 dash, just a shame its not gonna fit easily
  8. I've had squeeking brakes on my lexus GS300 sport before, and after replacing the discs and pads for oem lexus parts. You may find that upon closer inspection of the shims that the inner shims have a black paint/coating on them, and that they are rusting underneath. If they have a bubbling effect on them its likely its rusted and theres an air gap in there. I simply scraped off the loose paint and cleaned the shims up with scotch brite, and it got rid of my squeeking. The other alternative is to buy some from toyota, but they aren't cheap. I too had tried everything else before hand including using loads of copper ease/slip between the shims and the pads, and was still getting the squeeking, so I changed the pads, let them bed in, didn't work, changed the discs and let the pads bed in, didn't work and alas it was the rusted shims. The next thing I need to solve is the stupid clunking noise my brakes are making when turning with my foot on the brake. I still think the disc to hub mount design is useless, most other cars have the discs fixed to the hub via bolt/screws, not just the alloy wheel and its nuts. I have been able to prevent the clunk before, that was by bending the caliper to pad mounting shims so they were holding them in snuggly, but even though they are still snug they clunk now. Paul
  9. So no one is able to help me on this little dilemma I'm having then? It's still doing it, and I'm unsure of its cause. However like most cars, you notice one thing, then start noticing more, now I've found a hole in one of my rear silencer pipes, its doubtful this is linked to the jolting sensation, but has made the exhaust sound louder. I'm also noticing a clicking from the engine, not sure if its anything to do with the exhaust manifold or if its valves which need adjusting, but I'm tempted to book it in for a full service, and see what toyota can find out... Paul
  10. Hey all, been having a strange problem with my GS300 sport of late. The car drives perfectly fine other than these two problems. I've noticed that when cold as I'm cruising along if I release the accelerator completely the car kinda jolts, and this can be repeated as many times as you like by pressing the accelerator down and then letting off completely, its kind of like dabbing the brakes. I'm not sure if this is related to the throttle position sensor, or the automatic choke, etc. I'm also not sure if this is linked to the poor (extremely in my opinion) fuel economy. I filled the car up with petrol (£61 worth) and managed to do only 254 miles before needing more fuel, this is with around 40 miles a day of near urban driving, but I expect to still get around 21mpg in urban conditions, which this value obviously isn't... I have to say though I've struggled to get above 24mpg on a long run since i've had the car. If anyone has any opinions on how i can check various electronic sensors (i.e. throttle position sensor, and the o2 sensors) or can point me in the direction of a workshop manual, I'd really appreciate it. My car has only covered 77000 from new and I don't really fancy selling it at the moment so long as I can get the fuel economy up. Thanks Paul Edit:- I also forgot to mention the jolting effect doesn't entirely disappear when warm either, it still seems to manefest itself, I'm wondering if this is causing overfueling to a degree. I've not seen any check engine lights, or anything else wrong.
  11. I'm thinking about doing so, but the bloke is just likely to deny he did it, then the ball will be in my court to prove it. However you can clearly see where he has jacked the car up on the crossmember. What do you think I can do about it? Paul
  12. Nice, found out what it was, lexus found it straight away. The stupid mot tester had put the car on his ramp, then jacked up against the thin crossmember at the back of the engine, and crushed it into the cat, hence the vibration an louder noise when accelerating. Lexus couldn't find anything else wrong with the car, but regardless it was £40 for the mot, and £52.43 to straighten the bar and inspect the rest of the car. Paul
  13. I know exactly where to get hold of pirelli p-zero rosso 275/35 zr18 95Y's (mercedes only fitment ones since thats the only people they are made for according to burton pirelli distribution centre) I'm suprised you have rosso's on the front aswell, I only have them on the back, got normal P-zero assymetrico's on the front... anyway, try Inner Ring tyres in Derby, they have found some for me on several occasions when everyone else couldn't, oh bar one other place in nottingham who wanted £260 for one because they knew no-one else had them... Inner Ring Tyres & Wheels 01332 345515 (ask for Ian) They had two spares in stock when I last bought one, as they got three from abroad at the same time they ordered one for me, so chances are they may still have one. If not they'll track some down in europe. They were £195 not sure if they can courier one to you or not, you might have to fetch it :( Paul
  14. How can I check them easily? I haven't got access to an oscilliscope as mentioned earlier, I'm sure I can use a multimeter, but not sure how to do that since you mentioned voltage not resistance. If the ecu had a code suggesting the sensors were gone would I get an engine check light on all the time? I presume that if they are inefficient the ecu doesn't always let you know? Paul
  15. Ok guys n' gals, here's a question for you, today my lexus was perfectly fine, driving as smooth and quietly as it ever has. I took it for an MOT, was with the car all the time, the tester used a rod to hold the accelerator down to do the fast idle test, and left it at 2500 rpm for 5 minutes or there abouts, during which time the revs did go up to 3000 rpm, and it sounded a little louder, but I thought nothing of it. Anyway the car passed with no problems as usual, een emiisions were spot on. Now the problem is when I drove off I noticed and annoying noise, well more of a louder exhaust note when accelerating. The noise occurs at 2500-3500 rpm, but can be heard through the rev range a little, but its more prominant around 2.5k. I suspected a hole in the exhaust has now opened up, and I took it to severa exhaust places for them all to tell me "I can't find anything wrong, and I can't hear it" Has anyone experienced this before on thier cars, is it a hole in the exhaust, or could it be as one of the places suggested that the gubbins inside the cat have come loose and are rattling about? I'm puzzled and frustrated. I'm even taking it to the main dealer tomorrow to have it checked out, its concerning me that much Just to clarify though, it does it when the gearbox is in neutral aswell as when its in gear, but its louder when under load and pulling the car, which makes me think its a hole. I can see this is likely to cost me a fortune to put right, but any ideas would be much appreciated. Paul
