Ah, OK, I assumed the air filter is an annual service item. Anyway, mine was pretty choked with grey sooty dust. The other service items were engine oil and filter; replaced brake fluid; drained / filled diff oil; MAF cleaned; checked spark plug health - all of which were done by a mechanic. The air filter was changed a week later by me because of AutoDoc's tardy delivery. In the interim - ie, with the old Denso still in situ - all was normal re MPG. The change occured after the Bosch filter was installed. I always use either V-power or Momentum99, IME better low-speed throttle response, so E10 not an issue. I'm guessing the problem is the Bosch filter being slightly too big means the air box isn't sealed correctly? New Denso arrives tomorrow, so we'll see.

As part of my IS250's recent annual service I renewed the 1-year-old Lexus dealer-supplied, Denso-made air filter - part number: 17801-31110 - for a Bosch-made version supplied by AutoDoc. First, the Bosch filter is a wee bit thicker / taller and, in turn, closing the airbox (OEM) required the finger-strength of Thanos 😖 Second, since fitting the Bosch my car's motorway MPG at a steady 80-ish has dropped from 40mpg to 35mpg, but with no detectable increase in oomph to compensate 🧐 I've ordered another Denso 17801-31110 from lexuspartsdirect.co.uk to see if order can be restored. Will report back. Meanwhile, has anyone else ever experienced air-filter variances? (Excluding so-called 'performance' filters, many of which don't do a great job of actually, umm, filtering the engine-damaging crud.)

spark plugs

If you don't want to risk buying counterfeits from Ebay, they're £58.99 (£9.50 each) + £1.99 p&p from Opie: https://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-92173-denso-iridium-tt-spark-plug-ikbh20tt.aspx -
After consulting some franchised Lexus garages - cue much sucking of teeth and strategically vague estimates of job-length / cost, etc - I tried the garage (indie) that looked after my various VAGs over the years. "Do you know when it last had a re-gas?" "Umm, no, the car's new to me." "Bring it in and we'll check the Freon level." So, long story short: the Freon level was 90 - it should be 440. After a re-gas, all is well; although the interior temp-setting needs tweaking when the outside / ambient temp changes. PS Can anyone recommend an honest and fair Lexus / Toyota indie garage in London, please? (Spark plug service due soon-ish.)

Because every car I've driven with digital climate control - which includes Seats, Porsches, Ferraris, JLRs, Maseratis, Astons, and a Mercedes delivery van - to set a constant in-car temp irrespective of ambient temp, the process is the same: select Auto, select desired temp, let the system control the in-car temp. For example, enter the car during a 30°C ambient summer day, select Auto, set the temp to 20, and initially the fan will blow like a tornado, then gradually diminish to almost now't as it lowers the in-car temp to 20. Is a Lexus / Toyota system different? Ta 🙂

The ambient / exterior temps over the past few weeks I've driven the car have ranged from -2°C to 14°C. The button on the far left is set to Auto; the right button(s) is set for fresh air. Fan off. Whatever level I select the temp - eg, 24 during the recent cold snap - it oscillated between too hot and too cold. If I tried re-setting to 22, same result. Over the last few days the ambient has been c.14°C, so I tried setting to 20, but after a while it becomes too hot, then too cold. And I've noticed that the two vents above the centre console emit different temps: cold from the left, warm from the right. Huh? Your thoughts? Ta 🙂

Please advise... Bought an ‘09 IS250 SE-L (satnav and ML) last week. Very happy all-round, but I’m confused by the climate control: when I select Auto and set the temp, instead of maintaining the desired clime it blows like a weapons-grade hairdryer one minute, then changes to an icey blast, then reverts to furnace mode, then cold again – ad nauseam. Am I doing something wrong or is there a sensor problem? Ta 🙂

Hello Hope you're all safe and well 🙂 Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but do we know if IS250 OEM water pumps have been upgraded / improved or are they still failing at c.60-70k? (FWIW, for all its faults, VW upgrades / re-designs components that have recurring failures during a model's early years - eg, 1.8 turbo and 2.0 turbo coil packs, Mk4 Golf leaking rear wiper motors, Mk7 GTI cooling matrix, etc, etc.)

Thanks for your reply. Yep, in essence I think I'll do the same: Lexus Battersea for the basic service, and for any ad-hoc / 'extras' I'll use Stevens in Wanstead, which is a helluva schlep but I trust them 100% - they've looked after my various VAGs for the past 15 years. (They also supply tyres cheaper - eg, 18in Goodyear F1s were always £10 less per corner compared to Camskill, Blackcircles, et al.) Cheers 🙂

Thank you for replies. My journey is 15 miles, which comprises a 12-mile trundle around the 3-lane-wide North Circular (A406) in free-flowing traffic at c. 50mph, no drastic elevation changes; then turn off into 3 miles of typical central London stop / start traffic, side street 'rat runs', speed bumps, etc, which means never getting above 20mph. For example, in a VW Scirocco (2.0 turbo, 4 cyl, 227bhp) the 12-mile cruise at 50-ish would yield 38-42mpg, but the 3-mile final leg in stop-start sub-20mph London streets would drop the average consumption for the total journey down to c.32mpg. So, I'm assuming (hoping) the final 3 miles in a RX400h would use less fuel - ie, the ICE would not be running while stopped at traffic lights, and it would use mostly electric propulsion while crawling along side streets at sub 20mph? Hence, I'm interested to know what MPG to expect when cruising at c. 50mph in a RX400h 🙂
