  1. i bought a tow bar earlier this year for my 92 ls400 from watling engineering . came with single electrics and tow ball and i fitted it myself . i think it cost me about £260 including delivery . easy job and no problem to fit . the cut in the bumper you can't see at all as it is underneath . i have no additional oil cooler fitted and pull a large folding camper with no problems with the gearbox .
  2. my 92 ls400 i get on average 21mpg around derbyshire up hill and down dale so i don't think it is that too bad . worst has been 17mpg . best has been 33.4mpg on a long run constant motorway speed at steady 70mph on cruise . earlier this year we went to scotland for a two week holiday . up the west coast as far as inverness, across to fort william, down to the lake district east coast and back to derbyshire . 1400 miles . average mpg was 22.5 and that was with a large heavy folding camper on the back . don't think that was too bad . must add that i use FORTE gas treatment with every third tank of fuel and never had any problem . think this helps keep things clean in the fuel lines etc .
  3. sounds like it could have been the starter motor stuck in to make the noise .. also the reason it belched out a lot of smoke when it did start is possibly over fueling .. that would explain why it wouldn't start up after you turned it off.. ( flooded ) . just a thought . Keiron...
  4. don't get any thump noise on mine when shifting into gear . goes into drive or reverse smoothly .. could this be rare? door lock light .. on mine the interior light comes on when you lift the door handle up as if to open the door before unlocking . the lock itself doesn't light up on mine , should it hmmm don't know but the book says it should ... also the interior light comes on when unlocked by the remote .... PS pump ... sounds like the seal could be the fault . did mine a few months ago and it is an easy job to do ... about half an hour to do .... don't know about the gear shift , though there was another tread somewhere about replacement shifts for sale ... would think it is possible to get recovered by a trimmer though ... aeriel .. check for power first . if there is power it could be the motor. if not try looking for a blown fuse .. if all else fails SING . lol... cheers Keiron...
  5. well the plugs and HT leads are now done . time taken was 2 and half hours . not as hard as i thought it would be . done it on holiday . took tools with me hoping i had all the bits i needed , stripped off all the parts and done it on the camp site . thanks all for advise .. keiron.. :D
  6. can someone tell me how easy it is to replace the spark plugs in my LS400 1993 model . is there anything that needs to be removed etc to gain access . also how long would it take to do . thanks .. :)
  7. thanks very much for that infomation. would this be one of the models that is safe then if a cambelt was to break . the belt has been replaced about 7000 miles ago. thanks again.
  8. am not too sure what model mine is but would like to know so can someone tell me please. also what BHP would it be. it is a 1993 LS400 . is there anymore information needed and if so what? keiron...
  9. have owned my LS400 for 6 months now and the mpg im getting depends on how it is driven . when i first got it i filled the tank (£65) drove it home , all motorway on cruise at constant 70mph over a distance of approx 130 miles and the next day i filled it up again to check the mpg . i had to check it 3 times because i thought it was wrong because it did so well . 34mpg. unfortunatly i do not drive on the motorway at any other time except when we go on holiday because driving around town where i live the worst mpg is 17 and the best is 22. when we went on holiday we covered approx 1300 miles pulling a large folding camper all over Scotland and the north of England and i was suprised to get on average 23mpg. are we happy with it? YES. what pleasure it is to drive . who cares what the mpg is . if its something you want then get one . :)
  10. need to change the spark plugs in my LS400 1993 model , how easy is it to change them? any major parts need to be moved first ? thanks keiron..

  13. hi to all, :D can anyone tell me if its possible to replace the auto gearstick on an ls400. is it an easy job and any suggestions as to where i can get one apart from lexus main dealer. thanks in advance mal and keiron
  14. Are you sure that the fluid is getting past the pump spindle?? I have repaired two LS400's a 92 & 93 in the past where both looked like the seals had gone, in fact it was a 2p 'O' ring that goes on the spigot of the removable fluid container that sits on top of the pump. On both occasions they had gone hard and flattened off, when replaced no more leaks. Make sure it is the pump before you buy one they are an arm and a leg, and you won't know if it wasn't because it will obviously come with a new 'O' ring in it. Hopes this helps you with a cheap fix. Chris Vince ← Hi chris we have the same problem with our ls400 1993 and was wondering how easy it is to remove the reseviour and replace this O ring.. is the reseviour a push fit into the pump or is it bolted somewhere. any help appreciated. thanks mal ← Hi Mal, This is a straightforward job, it involves quite a bit of removal of covers etc to get to the pump and reservoir but once you are there it does NOT require removal of the pump or the disconnection of any pipes etc. Drain the fluid from the reservoir cup, undo the fixing that holds the cup in place if I remember correctly its a 10mm, then lift the cup away from the pump, use an old mirror if visibilty restricted. The 'O' ring that needs replacing is quite obvious and fitted onto the cup spigot, try to locate a hydraulic specialist nearby and purchase the replacement 'O' ring from them (you will get a better quality one in the right size). Reassembly is the reverse. Best of luck its well worth the effort. Chris Vince ← thanks chris will have a go at the weekend if it stops snowing by then . will keep you posted to how i get on . thanks again mal.....
  15. is this the same for a 1993 model and would all the memory for the seats etc need to be re-done as well ..thanks keiron and mal...
