  1. Hi can anyone advise. I live overseas and the machanic here are not the best, so need to check to see if anyone has any suggestion before I order parts. My 2007 GS300 runs perfectly, until a couple weeks ago when I lost reverse gear. When the car stars first thing I have no reverse gear, however after running for about 20/30 mins the reverse gear works fine. So reverse when the engine is warm but no reverse when cold. The mechanics diagnostic check only showed there was a fault now resolved but does not state what the fault was. does anyone have any suggestion as to what the fault might be and how to resolve it. Many Thank my email is pp6000@hotmail.com feel free to drop me a message or reply here.
  2. [Reposted in main GS forum - miss-understood the sub-topics] Hi All, just joined this forum as I think I'm about to buy a 2009 GS300 as my post-pandemic toy. Background - I'm more-or-less retired after running a fleet consultancy for 40 years, so know quite a bit about the overall motor trade, have enjoyed many a launch event and had good access to manufacturer demos etc. Unfortunately, almost all of my pre-covid contacts are no longer in post (retired/ changed jobs/ reorganisations etc) so I'm just about on my own for this. Most of my company cars were of the A6/ 5-series/ E-Class level, many diesel (and latterly hybrids/ BEVs). So my wishlist was for a bit of a barge with lots of toys, a fair bit of poke and comfortable. Now has to be petrol/ possible hybrid (I'm done with diesel and well aware of the ULEZ issues). Options for a car purchase included all these makes plus Lexus (GS over IS) and Volvo (S60 or S80). Running costs for a 4k - 6k annual mileage are not a major priority. My wife runs a 1.2, 66-plate Polo auto, which as served us well during lockdowns etc but I now want a car of my own! I've seen and test-driven a 2009/ 09 GS with 78k miles. Drives well, everything seems to work. (Android) phone connected quickly and my wife reported a clear conversation on test. Car seems clean with a 2-owner history and decent MOT record - but servicing mostly done at non-Lexus sites (last owner was for about 6 years). I have to decide whether to buy this or keep looking. Because it's a bit of an indulgence, I've retricted my budget and searches to a max of £8k.That budget allows a fair selection within a 100-mile radius (SE Hampshire), I'd really appreciate any contributions or advice from forum members with relevant experience/ expertise. I have driven only a few Lexus models before, but have always had a bit of a soft spot for their brand qualities. However, the budget (for a Lexus) and the couple of examples I've tested, indicates that some of the toys I'm "demanding" are quite old-school. I would be keen to change the SatNav & radio etc kit for something more modern (and without the H&S notice to agree to use SatNav carefully every time!); and with DAB radio, and probably Android Auto. I'd want to retain all the steering-wheel controls, reversing camera function etc. I also want the "3-flash" lane-change function which I use extensively (even on the Polo) and which I understand is a feature on later-model GS. Is there a way to achieve this either via ECU tweeking or a ready-made aftermarket do-hicky? I'm very keen on good headlights. I think this era of GS usually has HID headlights - is this correct? Has anyone fitted LED daylight running lights? Is there anything I should be looking for apart from a dealer warranty and a clean MOT? Any help/ guidance/ advice/ tips gratefully received. Stewart

  4. As the title suggests, I will probably be saying goodbye to my IS250. I wasn't planning on selling it, but someone asked if I'd sell and I said yeah, sure. So the said person is supposed to be collecting the car on Saturday, as is. It may be a goodbye to my IS250, but I won't be parting my ways with Lexus just yet. I am planning on getting a MK3 GS300 instead as I want the reliability and comfort for day-to-day driving, but I am also in the process of purchasing another weekend toy, manual Nissan 300ZX targa top, from someone local to me. I've wanted the Nissan for a long time and I think it's just meant to be. Someone wants to buy my Lexus and at the same time a 300zx for a reasonable price pops up? Fate perhaps? The 300ZX isn't mint, but it runs & drives, is solid underneath but the bodywork will need attention. Some rust patches are bubbling up under the paint in a few areas of the car, so I will be looking at fixing that over the coming weeks/months. I think it will be a case of a full respray eventually as the 32 years old paint is a bit tired at this point.

New gear selector knob, fitted. Pretty smart looking. I like the walnut colour; it matches the original trim panels close enough for me.

The chrome OEM knob next to my new walnut trimmed eBay special, from China. It was just under £20, delivered in 8 days from China. No import fees to pay either.

  8. I've got a new gs300 and was driving on a road but it wouldn't go past about 96mph (very legal on this road) and the revs were completely red lined. What could the issue be or is this normal?
  9. I'm considering buying a 2005 gs300 but the dealer told me the engine light comes on and he's sure that it's the exhaust sensor which is roughly £100 to fix and he's been too busy to sort it out. Is this a common issue. Should I be worried about what I've been told? Any advice is appreciated. Also, I've read that carbon buildup isn't an issue with these in the UK? This is the reason I avoided this car in the first place but I was getting advice from an American forum.
  10. 2nd Gen GS430 - 2003 B1218 - Has anyone had this code before and managed to fix it? It's Body ECU Number 2 Communication Stop. Stored in current codes on Techstream. I've checked that it's all plugged in and that the fuse for it is in good shape and all appears fine. Thinking I'll just get another ECU and swap it out. I've done some forum/Google trawling and it seems to be a semi-common problem but no confirmed solution! Any info welcome.
  11. Handy tip when sourcing mirco fuses make sure they are long blades as you can see on the right of the multimeter photo. Admin feel free to add as a sticky. 😏
  12. Hi all, I have just purchased a used 2000 Lexus GS300 (2JZ GE) with 120,000km on it. Currently the car has an idle problem when it reaches normal operating temperature (88c). In order to prevent the car from stalling, I have to turn on my A/C which maintains the engine at 450rpm (very jerky idle though). However, if I turned off the A/C the car would stall immediately. Well, I have temporarily fixed the low idle issue by installing a zip-tie on the throttle body valve (acting as a spacer). Currently, the idle sits at 680rpm. However, I do still have low idle (around 400rpm) when placing my gear into Reverse. Has anyone experienced this problem? Any solution? Thanks. Below are the readings on Techstream software via OBD2 reader (after installing zip-tie on throttle body valve): 1. When engine is not running, here are the "Throttle POS" reading: - Untouched Throttle Pedal = 15% - WOT (floored Throttle Pedal) = 69% 2. When engine is running with A/C on, RPM measurement on each gear: - P at 637 until 680 rpm - R at 460 until 500 rpm - N at 637 until 680 rpm - D at 617 until 630 rpm 3. When engine is running with A/C off, RPM measurement on each gear: - P at 520 rpm - R at 1100 rpm - N at 520 rpm - D at 720 rpm
  13. Hello fellow lexus owners Im having a bad time with my mk2 gs300. The brake booster started playing up, making squeaky noises then eventually stopped working. So i found a replacement online (secondhand) and fitted it. Now heres where the problem starts: I can hear the brake booster working, making buzzing noise but the brakes are still bad, meaning the pedal is still going down and i have to double press the pedal to get the brakes working. VSC, ABS, VSC OFF is still on i did unplug the battery when i changed the booster i also bled the brakes i connected it to obd, gave me a fault code C1322 ABS MALFUNCTION im literally out of ideas now, please can anyone help me
  14. Hi Everyone, I'm somewhat new here, so forgive me if I have posted this in the wrong section. Also I am incredibly useless with the mechanical stuff. Simple stuff I can do. So here's the problem, a week ago my car developed a horrible whine from the power steering pump, I was advised to drain the fluid as it looks like the previous owner either used the wrong kind or it's just old? Either way the fluid was not low but it was pitch black. I drained the fluid out and filled with fresh atf, and repeated 3 times, turning the wheel lock to lock in between changes, until I couldn't see any of the old fluid anymore. The whine has quietened down a bit but I can definitely still hear it. I wanted to know if anyone has any experience with this? Will the whine eventually go away or am I missing something? The power steering feels fine btw, it did have a slight vibration coming through and a strange almost burning like smell but since changing the fluid both of those issues have gone away. I'm a bit lost here, so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks everyone Aamir
  15. Hey chaps, I looked but couldn't see any mention of this weeks shed? https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/lexus/gs/lexus-gs-gs2-300-s------------------1998/9387410 This looks like a very good deal for £1250 unless I am missing something? If I needed a cheap run around I would be tempted, especially with the great seats it has
  16. My first post so be gentle. I'm 30+ male and due to moving from countries to countries for much of my teens and 20s and general reluctance living in cities, I somehow managed to live without a car until now. Happy to get my license last month and currently looking to buy my first car. My budget is under £5000. I've been looking all around, and although my head says I should stick to some standard economical Honda or Skoda to learn how things work, none of them excites me one bit. And I really love the design of the GS300 or IS250. With my budget, I can probably only afford a 10 year old model with just under 100k mileage. What do you say? Should I go ahead and reward myself a Lexus or am I blind-walking into a money pit?
  17. I just bought a 55 plate Lexus GS300. I love the car but was checking the rear discs and they are only a few mm thick. In fact I could almost bend them. I decided to order new discs but the auto parts data, and on-line websites, all say 310mm vented are the correct disc. Can I fit vented discs and new pads even though it is a solid disc on the back. Edited to add.....Hi all. I'm new here and hope to contribute as much as I can
  18. Hi Everyone I am new to the forum, please be kind. Lol I own a 1997 Mk1 GS300 Sport and I am absolutely in love with it. However, it has an issue with the cental locking. It seems to have a very weak signal, when locking and unlocking with the fob I have to stand right next to it and press the lock/unlock button multiple times before it eventually works, sometimes it just won't and I'll have to use the key to lock manually. I have already replaced the battery in the fob, but it hasn't made any difference. Today I tried for so long that I ended up using the key and this set off the alarm, fortunately after pressing the unlock button for what felt like an eternity it finally unlocked. Anyone here had similar issues? Also, it works perfectly fine when I am in the car. I'm very much a noob when it comes to working on cars. So as much instruction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  19. Hi, I’ve got a 2000 GS300 which is a mark 2. Found a good exhaust system for sale, only thing is he says it’s off a 1997 mark 1. So will a mark 1 GS300 exhaust got a mark 2 GS300? thanks
  20. Just had my 2006 GS300 serviced at 85,000 miles. I thought all was fine. However, mechanic tells me error code P0751 is coming up which refers to "Shift solenoid 'a' performance or stuck off" and now I'm worried about my gearbox playing up as I suspect repairing a Lexus autobox doesn't fall into the cheap category. As the car appears to be running fine I'd be happily driving around, if it wasn't for the error code, as I'm sure I've done for years/thousands of miles in the past when previous cars weren't clever enough to warn you about every minor niggle - oh well that's progress! The other good news my mechanic had was that I'm due 6 new Denso Iridium spark plugs, which he recommend I look for on line as often cheaper than the trade suppliers, as he was quoted over £20 each, which having had a look myself I could save myself a few quid, but then I tried rockauto.com who saved my a fortune on my replacement suspension and they've supplied 8 plugs with shipping and VAT for £87! Those paying attention will notice that's 2 extra as they only do them in boxes of 4 but still a great saving and I'll only need to buy 4 next time! Chris
  21. Well, finally got round to getting the advert up. Had to clean the cob webs usually found in the 'For Sale' section but the car is now there if any of you lovely folk are interested Really hope it goes to a LOC member as don't want the grief that comes with Autotrader, etc...
  22. Hello, Can you tell me what are your mpgs like, I'm mainly interested in city driving so I don't know if the gs 300 is the right car for me. Thank you in advance
  23. Does anyone know what the 'official' sizes should be please? Forum/internet searches seem to be bringing back differing results. Reason for asking is because mine came with some Bosch Aerotwins that I think could be a little too big... Ta, Noman
  24. Hi All, I'm looking to lower my '99 GS300. Was wondering is anybody here running Eibach ProKit or H&R? They seem like a good option for sensible price. Also Vogtland is on the table. Anyone has an experience with any of the above?
  25. Hi, I've had enough of other brands and remembering how reliable was my father's ES300 I decided to go for a budget Lexus. It's a GS300 from 2005 (I live in the UK, ES300 was imported). I read stories about people having the car over 200k miles and going strong, but there's lots of stories about carbon build up that scare the hell out of me (mostly US though). I have few questions: - for those who got into owning a GS300 that's potentially affected, did you regret your decision? - there are services that offer engine carbon cleaning - do these work? - I'd be using premium fuel, is it enough to eliminate the issue? The car I'm looking at is over 100k and the previous owner had it for over 8 years, so I assume it should be ok, but maybe he's selling it as it's out of warranty and he's started experiencing said issue, I don't know. There are no outstanding recalls on the car. It's the £305 road tax bracket - but I don't think the higher tax has anything to do with engine redesign that avoids the issue? After all, I just want a reliable Lexus. I'm going to go all the way south to see the car on Friday. I'll need to take it there and then or not. It will be covered with engine and transmission warranty for one year, but I understand these carbon build up issues are hard to reproduce, and from what I red Lexus dealerships avoided responsibility in the past by saying they couldn't reproduce the issue. I'd be more interested to see if regular engine carbon cleaning (yearly?) is a solution (I don't want to add cleaner to fuel every time I top up the tank)? Any other advice and tips will be appreciated! Thanks
