  1. Well, I replaced the EGR valve with an aftermarket one. Its brand new. This was done Wed evening. I have been driving about and last night after work i was standing in traffic and revved the engine hard. It smoked like you wouldnt believe. In anycase after that it seems to have sorted itself out and theres not much smoke. The issue im having is that it now judders and the revs dont stay at one level for example when im standing in traffic. The power has come back tho. Is it that the EGR could be faulty? Is it that its an aftermarket...or is it that the car is simply adjusting to the new valve? Not really sure what to do.
  2. Hello, I have an is220d 08 model. Im having an issue with carbon build up. I had the car fully serviced and the EGR valve taken off and cleaned. The mechanic sent me some pics and it was properly clogged. Even the manifold inlet pipe was clogged. He cleaned the whole lot out and the car changed in how it responded etc. FYI for the better! The service took place in November so it hasnt been that long at all. The issue is, is that im having similar issues to what i was experiencing before I had the service done which is slow take off. Then when i hit 2500rpm it kicks in! But on hills if im in 2nd gear its not going anywhere. So im thinking that the EGR valve is blocked up again and needs a clean. I will do that this weekend, but wanted to know why it would get clogged up so quickly? The lexus garage (when i took it to them to reset the engine code) suggested it could be the EGR valve cooler?? Any ideas?
  3. IS220d....Ok the egr system needs cleaning now and again but what I would like to know is the egr pipe where it meets the block is that a straight channel thro to the cooler on the other side of the engine and if so should this not be part of the clean and maybe all the parts linked..cooler,actuator etc??
  4. IS220d Remapped (2 years)

    Remapped my IS220D SE-L 2 years ago

Hi guys, Thought I should join to share my IS220d experience. I had issues blanking my EGR few years ago as it would throw up all sorts of errors. tried cleaning but only eliminated issues temporarily. I found a company willing to do a remap. He managed to delete DPF and EGR. I then blanked the EGR with a plate and got the DPF gutted by a professional welder (mechanic) within a week of map. The car was at 120k mileage when mapped. it is now at 162k pulling strong on all gears. the economy, torque and response was an still is really noticeable. I manage 38>mpg on minor boost and 31-36mpg having fun with it. These figures vary dependent on weather and road conditions hence the large variations. To summarise, 1. hydrocarbon engine flush. (I just did it for the sake of it) 2. remap (delete EGR and DPF from ECU) 3. Blank EGR (blanking plate from ebay) 4. DPF gutted then re-welded professionally (from my mechanic) Hope this helps,
  5. Usual warning lights on dash on my IS220d - P2002. 100,000 miles, new EGR fitted by Lexus @ 49,000 One careful lady owner so expected the worse as it's probably never been out of Solihull. Took off EGR and it was pretty bad so cleaned this out but after resetting the lights with a reader purchased from Amazon for £15 they came on again after 1 minute, followed by the limp mode. I'm 50 miles from the nearest dual carriageway and about the same from the nearest DPF doctor in Telford. Anyone know how I can force the DPF into a cleaning cycle whilst the vehicle is stationary? I can start the engine and warm up, then increase to around 3000 rpm no problem. Any other suggestions will be gratefully received
  6. I have been talking to Gareth at Avon Tuning in Bristol after reading this article: Avon Tuning have a good reputation as far as I can see on various owners forums. They have a blog and facebook page too if you are interested. Gareth wrote in response to my email: "Since summer last year, the Denso ECU's fitted to Lexus/Toyota vehicles were cracked. This was one of the biggest revelations in our industry. We have now done over 100 Toyota/Lexus vehicles for both Remapping and DPF Removal. We give you a lifetime warranty with our software so no issues there for you. There are many advantages to DPF Removal, the main being the cost Vs replacement let alone a healthier vehicle with less restriction and pressure. Another advantage to a DPF Removal is that we include free of charge a Remap so therefore is very cost effective for you saying you £250. We offer a DPF Removal + EGR Delete + Stage 1 ECU Remap + Dyno package on your vehicle for £549 including VAT. That includes the physical removal of the filter, the fitment of an EGR blanking plate and all the associated ECU Reprogramming to prevent future DPF regeneration and warning lights. Also included free of charge is a Stage 1 ECU Remap to improve the performance and efficiency of the engine. Furthermore, once we have completed our removal service we offer a lifetime guarantee against any future DPF / EGR issues and warning lights." very interesting :)
  7. Hi Guys first time posting on the forum but wanted to share my experience. I have a 07 Is220d for almost a year now with 120k. I drive about 400 mile per week motorway driving. When I got the car it wasn't great so got it remapped. I then got it carbon cleaned through the air box and put some fuel cleaner in it to and still not great. Low revs poor. Couldn't get 40mpg no matter what I done. Monday night I decided to pull of the egr valve and it was totally blocked. The fuel cleaner and 1 hour carbon clean was useless. I soaked the egr valve in brake cleaner and also the steel pipe. Used a tooth brush to get as much carbon off the manifold. Put it all back together and I'm not getting 50 mpg at 75mph. Takes any gear at low revs. Different car. It took me about 2 hours and it's only 6 nuts. Hope this helps some of yous.
  8. Hi All, I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to cars and I'm wanting to learn a bit more about them. I have recently bought a 2007 Lexus IS220D with 47k miles. The previous owner (who had it from new) just used it for city driving. Never thought much of it at the time but looking on the forums it looks like this can cause quite a bit of carbon build up, I'm wanting to give cleaning it a go myself as it looks pretty straightforward (on youtube) but want a bit of advice before i do it. Would it cause any problems if I take out the egr and manually clean that and then use this kit? It's the Wynn's 3 pack (EGR Cleaner, DPF Cleaner, and Injector Cleaner), would these cause any problems for the car? Or has anyone come across any better alternatives? I thought if I manually clean the EGR then use the kit it would come out even cleaner if it's really blocked up. Sorry if it's a really stupid question, like I said I'm a car noob ;) Cheers
  9. Well, this seems to have put a damper on DPF removal, although not sure how it will affect cars which still have the dpf in place but its insides removed and emulator fitted?
  10. Hello all, Despite the killing of the diesel option by Lexus (which I did agree with), I am the owner of a 2007 IS 220d Sport. I have visited this site many times with relation to some problems I have experienced, and others I had heard about but did not have the pain of trying to solve. First of all, most of my problems were minor and of the "easily solved variety". My car as stated is an IS 220d from 2007 with pretty much the full package (except the ML stereo system). As of today I have just over 268 000 kms on the odometer and have basically done nothing aside from basic maintenance. Only one EGR was placed in the beginning and out of warranty due to poor research on my part. Other problems with the DPF, battery etc have all been solved without much expense and the car is presently running as new. No cabin rattles, suspension is fine, acceleration is well under 8 seconds and fuel consumption is around 7-8 L/100 kms, very reasonable for this car. Same water pump, transmission, clutch, DPF, injectors, fifth injector, muffler, suspension etc. Although I am a fan of all things Lexus and gasoline, my living in Portugal along with frequent trips made me opt for the diesel. Some headaches aside, the car is actually quite fine and I´d love to help or attempt to help out anyone that loves the car but is having a problem that may be solved without great expense. Cheers, John 2007 IS 220d Sport 268 000 kms and counting.
  11. Hello to all, I need desperately an advice or maybe an idea for my problem. I know the next story is not too short, but I have tried to explain the situation. I own a 220d Lexus from 2007, 150.000KM. 2 months ago I had a problem with the turbine (turbocharger). The turbine didn’t want to enter at the normal 2200 RPM speed, but just after 3500 RPM in any gear. I went with it at Lexus Dealer, at Toyota Dealer and 2 more authorized dealers. None of them found any error in the computers, and couldn’t tell the problem. They found that my EGR was dirty, so they cleaned it up. They have also tried a new flow meter, but for nothing. The problem was still there. They reconditioned the Turbine , they found that the second EGR that is controlling the turbine was broken. So they changed it up. After that, I have seen few changes. 1. The consumption was from 11-12 L/100Km to 13-13.5L/100Km. 2. The turbine entering at 1800 RPM, not at 2200 as is used to. 3. The Air conditioner dropped to low… ( I still felt it but not as before ). I changed the Freon, it’s more better but not as before. 4. The Ventilated Seats doesn’t work anymore. ( the led light is fine, the heat is ok, the fuses are ok , no errors at all) After 1 week, I have found another problem. When the heat outside is over 30 C, after 15-20 minutes of driving, I have problems with me turbine. It doesn’t enter in use, or it is enter whenever it wants (2000RPM, 2500RPM, 3000 RPM, 3500 RPM, or even at all, random). If I let the car to cool down, I have no problems until it get hot again. This heat is not necessary the reason(I have rarely this symptom even on cold) , but when is heated is happening often rather is cold. I have taken the car to many dealers, and Lexus… and they didn’t find any problem at all. They say to me that is the reason is the computer(software), that hardware doesn’t have any problem at all, checked again the turbine and EGR said that it’s OK. They advised me to sell the car in the next winter…. I don’t want to do it …. (( Thank you in advance for your help !

  13. Hello Owners, I am seriously considering getting a second hand IS 220D for the next family car. I have stomached an Alfa 147 jtd for the last 5 years and have had enough of bolting back on all the bits that drop off it with frightening regularity. I do 18+K a year, mostly motorways. I am more than willing to swap the Alfa's fun (when it works) driving experiance for a more sedate atmosphere, and from what I have read, the Lexus seems to fit the bill for size, style, extras and reliability. I am well aware of the egr valve issue with the 220D (I eventually blanked the Alfa's off), and am very happy to maintain service items myself (Alfa ownership forces you to get aquainted with your tools). BUT my big issue is the HEAD GASKET. Only in these forums have I read of the appreciable risk of it bursting in the Lexus, whereas all other reviews spout on about Lexus' fabulous reliability. Is this a real issue or just a few isolated cases? Is it a result of driving style or poor maintenance? Hope I can get some definative advice from those with 1st hand experience. Cheers Tim
  14. I had recently some problems with famous EGR valve... ;( While reading the forum I found a couple of threads ref the EGR and I decided to check what is under my bonnet (very similar symptoms)... and what I expected 'the layer of carbon dust' looked like coal mine !!!EGR completely black and block by that filth. I don't suspect previous owner looked up to clean the valve before... Can any of the forum members give me some advice how to prevent that..if that is possible... Many thanks

    Egr Bypass Is220D

I have made the EGR bypass. At 106.000km the EGR was almost completly full of carbon. After Cleaning with Brake Cleaner liquid and a screw driver: Closing the EGR pipe fitting. Tubes installed: Final Result: Nice, clean and... more economic fuel consumption :)

    Egr Advice Wanted Please

Hi there, I really hope that someone here can help me or at least offer a crumb of comfort! I recently purchased a late 2007 Is220d. The fuel consumption was pretty poor, so after seeing the posts regarding the EGR valve decided to have a look. I first removed battery. The valve was blocked solid with soot which I cleaned out. I removed the valve to do this properly and used Wynns EGR3 professional to give it a good clean. The port on engine that valve sits on was also solid. I used a hoover and small scraper to remove all this and a tiny drop of the Wynns to finish. I then put it all back together and started engine. It ran for about 20 seconds - very roughly, and then stopped. I have since been unable to start it - although after about 5 attempts the battery was flat. My questions are these. 1. By removing battery, and I presume resetting engine settings - could this cause me a problem? 2. Would a relatively flat battery have caused a problem anyway.? 3. Why on earth would cleaning this valve cause such a problem? I have now taken battery out to recharge overnight and removed EGR valve to make sure that valve, pipe and port are thoroughly dry, although to be honest, I hardly used any of the Wynns on the engine part. Any advice would be very welcome please. I would also add that no alarms show up when I try to start it - it just says checks completed.
