  1. I own a 1990 ls 400

Only the left side of my driver's back tilts with the adjustor. I searched through the forum for the solution and there is no definite answer to the problem. Can someone be very kind to answer in more details? I opened the seat cover and didn't know which tube/rod to move and how to fix it. Any answer/solution is appreciated. Thx

I had a similar problem (I think) with my 1991 LS. The back of the seat looked like it was twisted or crooked when I tried to move it. Never bothered to fix it. It looks more than it feels.

  2. £246 sounds alot for a check over on the car but believe me it could save you thousands in the long run.

I spent €400 on an AA test that stopped me from a buying an LS that was a total heap of junk. The AA valued it at half the value that the Lexus dealer had put on it.

Unfortunately, I should've got a second AA test that might have stopped me from buying the LS I eventually did buy. I ended up having to spend about €5k on it over 2 years on essential mechanical stuff.

Of course, there's a limit to the amount of money you can spend on tests if you don't actually end up buying a car...

  3. Windscreen wiper travel - is this adjustable as mine overruns and hits the windscreen frame on Hi speed wipe?

I had this on my MK2 and it was because the wrong size wipers were put on, as far as I recall the 2 wipers are supposed to be different sizes. I expect some people just measure one and then buy a pair that size. Changing them is a pain though. What I did was turned on the wipers until they get in the pointing up position then turn the ignition off so they stay there.

I've had the wiper trouble on both of my MK1s. Not sure if wiper size is the issue, as it's the body of the wiper (if you know what I mean) that's hitting the metal strip on the side of the windscreen. I've considered sticking little blocks of foam on to the wiper body in order to deaden the "blow", but I haven't got around to it yet.

It's a shame that the "ruthless pursuit of perfection" let something like this slip through the net, becaue it's just the type of thing that one's smart-arsed "friends" are likely to comment negaively on..."Oooh, your wiper's making such a lot of noise, and you're getting how much mpg? Doesn't happen on my Daewoo Crapmobile..."

Apologies to Daewoo owners everywhere, of course... :winky:

  4. May have found one. 95 model, 140k miles, £3k, service history (lexus) up to 25k miles ago (last owner did himself privately), excellent condition inside & out (I'll see whether this is true tonight!), everything works apart from remote central locking (using key works ok). 1 year warranty, cambelt being done if I buy it etc. looking at it tonight, printed out the 'laymans checklist' so gonna go through that when I check the car out. I think (hope) I'm mechanically minded enough to check things out well enough (I tinker enough with my Westfield! :D) I hope.

anyone any thoughts on the remote locking issue? dealer said he'd get an auto electrician to have a quick look at it

the 1 year warranty sounds interesting...

  5. I reckon I got about 23/24 mpg (Imp.) on my old 91 LS, and I have no reason to suspect that my new 94 LS will be any different.

Driving around town is a killer on the consumption, but i wonder how shocked yer average Fiesta driver would be if they checked their "urban" consumption against what they thought they'd be getting... :P

  6. I'm having the same problem with my 94 LS. I'm taking your possible solutions to my garage and we'll see what happens... :winky:

Problem solved! My garage checked out the throttle body and declared it "filthy". Now cleaned out and everything is running smoothly. I was advised to put the car in neutral when stopped, rather than keeping her in Drive. Hadn't done that before in eight years of driving autos, but it ain't that hard to get used to.

    Two other comments:-

    1. I was given the use of a 98 BMW 520i manual for the day. Nice car to drive (v. comfortable seats and roomy cockpit) but I wasn't impressed with the stick shift - not as smooth or precise as I'd've assumed. And the interior is rather gloomy IMO. Glad to get back into the Lexus afterwards.

    2. I saw my old LS (which I traded in 3 months ago) still running well. At least it wasn't pulling a horsebox... :)

  7. Howdy - new member - first posting - evening all!

1980 Opel Kadett 1.2 (Vauxhall Astra)

1984 Opel Ascona 1.6 (Vauxhall cavalier)

    1987 Toyota Carina 1.6

1992 Vauxhall Carlton 2.0 Station Wagon - first auto

    1991 LS 400

    1994 LS 400 (current car)

The LS is the best car I've driven (wouldn't be hard in the above company), but also the one that has given me the most grief in terms of bits'n'pieces going wrong. You don't have to be mad to run a Lexus, but it helps... :P
