  1. Mundano TDCi 130 mate..cheap as chips..you should be able to get a 12 month old model for the GS..

Call me a snob but I couldn't have a Mondeo on the path, it might be a great car but they are soooooo boring looking, same goes for a Vectra.

I used to have a Alfa Selespeed a few years back, cracking car apart from the Selespeed, handled great, went well and looked a bit different.

Might look at a Saab 9-5 as well.

  2. I reckon around 6.5k trade-in. 7.5k-8k private sale.

Bad time of year for selling a GS. High petrol prices too. GS cars seem to be dropping bigtime each month right now.

    Good Luck!

    What u getting now?

Thanks, I need to travel to Glasgow from Cheshire every week now so need to get something that will be good on the mpg front.

I was thinking of getting a later shape Alfa 156 JTD but not 100% sure yet.

If the GS was a bit more frugal I would keep it as they are very very good cars.

  3. Craig,

Give it time. Once you get used to the effortless drive of a Lexus, you will find it hard to drive anything else. Regd. Lexus Nottingham, are you going to be taking your car to a LEXUS dealer for servicing???? You must have plenty of spare cash then mate!!

    Welcome!!

    ***** No!!!

My local AA centre have looked after my cars for the last 3-4yrs and they are really good and helpful unless it's something really special then there is a specialist(rolling road etc)down the road from where i live.

From Lexus just want some new black mats and clear side repeaters.

Your right about the drive I could have fallen asleep :winky:

last time i was that relaxed I was in a hotel with the wife :whistling::blush:

Nearly brought a newer Lexus but this one just did it for me B)

What about a re map is it worth doing ?

Thought about that It's just that put my foot down and nothing seems to happen then above 3500rpm all hell breaks loose and it goes mad and fly's?

So hoping to smoooooooth it out a bit!!

Going to see about it on thursday so i'll let you know.

give chippeduk a go, Jayson who owns it will remap the Gs300.

Ok, I was referring to my knowledge of the old 7 series sport models. I don't know what BMW do with Sport models nowadays. See this blurb I got from a review of a 1999 740i Sport

"The Sport also has a shorter final drive ratio, 3.15:1 instead of the usual 2.81:1, for quicker acceleration. It also includes a torque converter with a higher stall speed for a quicker jump off the line. "

Not quite true. The Lexus IS220d Sport has different gearing to the other diesels.

Thanks for pointing out. I just realised that the gear ratios for new IS220d are identical, but the final drive ratio is shorter for the Sport (3.2 vs 2.474). I suppose it just means the car is quicker in certain aspects only, since the the conventional benchmark of 0-60 is identical to the non-Sport model. (I've taken my stats from the Nov 2005 press release). I don't believe that Lexus made any gearing changes for the mk1 or mk2 GS Sport models though...

BM Sport models on all are the new cars are just trim levels really, slightly lowered, sports seats, M gear knob & steering wheel, M alloys etc.

Mind you most manufacturers "Sport" models are just a trim level, you have to buy the branded M3, RS4 etc cars to get proper sporty specs.

Rip off if you ask me.

  6. BM Sport models have the same gearing as the SE and ES models, the last proper BM Sport models where the E30 Sports which had an LSD and different gearing.

My last 2 previous cars before my GS where E46 325se and then a 325 Sport, no difference in performance at all betwen the 2.

    just my 2p worth.

  7. Well, I've been playing around with various fuels since I got my GS back last year. I do mostly urban and stop/start driving, so rarely get above 50mph. I've had the AC off when driving. Whether I use supermarket 95 grade/Tesco Super Unleaded 99 or Esso Unleaded 97, I'm consistently getting 20mpg.

I filled up my last tank with Optimax, which is around 6% MORE in price than 95 unleaded in my area (101.9 vs 95.9). Car doesn't seem faster actually.

At refuelling time, filled up again with Optimax at the same pump and worked the fuel consumption. 22MPG!!! Ok, that's 10% less fuel that was being used, which on balance, overcomes the price difference by a small factor.

The lowest mpg I have seen is 25 on the computer using normal Shell unleaded, do you drive wiith a heavy right foot to get 20 from yours ?

  8. OK. Another tankfull (ish) goes by and the thot plickens...

At 305 miles the low fuel light came on and the cruising range showed as 30.

At 335 miles the cruising range had dropped to 14.

At 363 miles the cruising range finally dropped to 0.

Filled up 6 miles later - 369 miles @ a reported 28.6 mpg (for the tankfull).

Took 62 litres - right up the neck of the tank.

Capacity is supposed to by 75 litres - there's definitely a family of algerians living in the tank.

    Calculated mpg is 27.

    Buggerdifino.

Saw a Volvo S80 T6 driver this morning - brand new, obviously just picked it up - and the look on his face when I parked next to him was a picture - the guy was green and walked away with his shoulders slumped around his knees.

Who needs good fuel consumption when you can have moments like that.

    Cheers

Snork, so you recon your tank could of had 13 litres in it when you filled up ?

So if you carried on till you actually ran out how many miles do you think you could of gone on for ?

What was the cost of filling up ?

  9. which polisher in particular Mr Singh as they do a few of them ?

Hi, you may not get a response from Mr. Singh as he's probably busy fixing his baby (it's broke!) but I'm guessing he's talking about this one.

Someone should be along to confirm soon - but bear in mind that you'll need a power converter to run in the UK.

    HTH

What other options are there for electric polishers, I assume there are some decent UK ones available ?

  10. Spitfire,

Yes, that's what I'm getting. I'm calculating using the miles I'm doing between fillups, so pretty accurate. Your satnav screen is probably OVER estimating your mpg. Calculate the figures yourself and tell us what you are getting.

I've seen some 2000 GS300 sports recently sell on ebay for around 8 grand up to 8,750.

Dont say its over calculating  its bad enough showing below 30 :D

  11. i wetsanded 60% of my car with 2000 grit and then polishing up with porter cable polisher....

by hand? fo get it!! lol

get a porter cable polisher mate... it will be the best investment u ever made!

its a MUST have with a black car...

    ;)

which polisher in particular Mr Singh as they do a few of them ?

  12. Steve,

See here, as I brought this up recently too.

    http://www.lexusownersclub.co.uk/forum/ind...showtopic=31708

Essentially, disregard any fuel computer in any car. These "displays" merely indicate information to the driver, and are not accurate. Think ballpark figure, rather than exact answer.

If your car is REALLY returning 28mpg on average, you should be getting approx 339 miles before you the low fuel light comes on.

However, I doubt you are getting anywhere near that unless you are spending all your time cruising on motorways. I calculate my own consumption, and am getting around 21mpg (80% stop start/20% B roads). That's with Tesco Super Unleaded too.

It's the way Lexus designed the car. It's got low gearing (for better acceleration), and it's a heavy beast too.

Ahhh, enjoy the ride and waft past 5 series and E class drivers that are doing without electric seats and electric steering wheels!

Maneesh, do you really think you are only getting 21 mpg, the read out on my nav screen reads approx 28-29 on the m/way and about 24 round town.

    Usually reads 26 on average.

I put £40 in this week and the nav range stated 240 miles so 60 miles to £10 so I dont know how accurate the computer is on the car.

What do you recon I would get for a 2000 300 Sport with nav in platinum ice with 95k on the clock ?

  13. My new GS300 Navigator (series II) is confusing me :duh:

According to the spec sheet this car has a 70 litre tank (I make this 16.7 galls give or take).

Over the last 1,000 miles the mpg shows as 28. Should be around 470 miles on a tankful then, right? Leave out 30 so as not to run dry and I would expect to be filling up at 440.

Never that simple though is it. The trip computer tells me that the range of the car is around the 400 mark when full. This then drops off to 30 after about 320 miles. Mysterious...

But then lo & behold, the car will only take around 55 litres to re-fill it - with a lot of effort to drip-feed the last 5.

    What gives?

Have I got a small tank (I know how the guys in Tokyo like to play around with specifications)?

Is there some trick to filling the thing that I haven't mastered yet?

Am I carrying 15 "dead" litres of fuel? - would be a crisis in an F1 car.

    Steve

    Hi Mate

I posted about this not long ago, I've got a GS mk 2 Sport with Sat Nav same as you and this is a real bugbear for me and really pisses me off.

The cruising range is a joke on the sat nav screen, for example if you do a steady 70 on the m/way you would expect the crusing range to recalculate its self and go up (as it does in BM's for example) but on the Lexus it stays the same.

I would like to know when you get to 0 or low fuel is displayed on the nav screen what is left in the tank.

You would expect the cruising range countdown to actually mean 0 miles left when it counts down and not say for example have another 60 miles worth of fuel left in the tank.

The mpg isn't great on the GS300 at the best of times and I have seriously thought of selling mine, the problem is and it is a real world problem is what do you go for after Lexus as the spec on them and reliablity will beat any car hands down, BM's, Merc, Audi included.

    Jon

  14. I'm thinking about selling my GS300 and would apreciate some ideas of perceived value please (as the mileage is high).

    Details are:-

GS300 SE Mark 2, 1998, 177K miles, nearly full Lexus service history, SatNav, aftermarket alloys (Mille Miglia Evo), upgraded speakers, blue, pretty good nick but a few dings along one of the doors (carpark damage)

    Thanks

from Glass's based on 150k mileage

    Excellent condition £5230

    Average condition £4570

    Below average condition £3900

    Retail £8100

    Cost new £34134

    Mileage 177,000

Please note Unfortunately, we don't have a valuation for the requested mileage. However, we can value this car at 150,000 miles.

Would of thought you would get £5k for it minimum if it looks the part.
