  1. Just dropped back into the forum having got rid of my 06 22d a couple of years ago. Just before I did I got Lexus Bristol to clean out the EGR and that significantly improved MPG (back up to 45mpg). Pity I did not get it done earlier! I would strongly recommend getting your lexus dealer to clean out yours and see what happens (do not allow them to replace as that is expensive). It also cleared up the clouds of black smoke under accerelration and white smoke pouring out when stooped. A WW2 destroyer would have been proud of the smoke screen it left!

  3. Its worth doing. I managed to persuade my lease company to authourise Lexus Bristol to clean out the valve and Manifold a couple of weeks ago. The lumpiness at 2500 rpm has gone, it is more responsive, a lot smoother and I am seeing MPG figures that I have not seen since I got the car nearly 4 years ago. Went from around 36mpg to 43 even saw 50 on a trip up the M6!

I don't know why Lexus do not offer this as part of the service but it would do wonders for the high mileage cars.

  4. The lease of my 220d comes to an end in April and was originally going for a Mazda 6 Sport as replacement due to Benchmark limitations and the price increase of the basic 220d. The deletion of Cruise Control was a deciding factor.

I have changed my mind and managed to squeze a BMW X1 into the Benchmark. Why not look at the X1, its basically a slightly higher 3 series tourer with SE level and about 4k cheaper!! Its lighter so emissions are lower and is probably more economical.

  5. Have you had the Rear Brake Caliper recall done? The first symptoms I got when mine started paying up was braking and not getting the reassuring G force movement forward, felt as if the Car was on Ice. It gradually improved over the next day or so. Lexus Bristol did the Rear Calipers and changed front discs. Unfortunatly just before the recall so that cost the lease company!

  6. Interesting responses. I had a 2009 model (3000 miles) as a Courtesy car from Lexus Bristol when mine had an oil leak fixed (second one) around the sump area.

The consumption seemed to be about 5mpg better than my 06 model. I saw 49 mpg when I got home, That was M5 from Junc 19 round to M4 Junc 18 and then X-country to Chippenham. I returned it with 46 on the clock. Mine normally does it at around 40/41. Although having the Battery disconnected has cleared the ecu memory and I git 43 last night! So it does look as if there is some improvement.

The Auto locking is a nightmare, can it be switched off! Normally you open the handle twice on cars with this feature to open the door, why not on the 220?

The base model upholstery does not look as good as the earlier version. This was in Black and it looked like thye rear seats had been scuffed. The Clock LED does seem to be green compared with the 06 model and the surrounds to the Air vents above the radio are the same as the dah now rather than the carbon effect the 06 model has. Looks better.

It might be my imagination but I thought the Wing mirrors were a bit smaller?

Also, why do we not get Car Park defenders??? There was already a chink out of the door from a car park! My 06 model is perpered with scratches and now looks awful.

Gear bos did seem smoother and I could use 6th Gear quite happily at 65. No vibrations etc. My Son even commented how quiet is was compared with the 06 model.

If I could confirm the mpg over a few days I may seriously consider another one when the Car gets changed next year. especially with the 20% tax! Beats the 3 series into the weeds when you are limite to £22.5k for a car.

  7. I have a small problem with the Aircon. Whe starting up after leaving the car for a while the Radio settings are displayed almost immediatly but on the Air-con side the Front window demister light flashes for 25 times and all that comes up is the seated person and a down facing arrow. The settings that I had when switching off are not displayed. I have to switch it back on using the Auto Button and then the display comes up but with the temperatures set at 22 each side. I awlays have the settings at 18 each side, auto, dual and A/C on.

If I switch off for a few minutes then on restart the previous settings do come up!

Its in to Lexus Bristol on Wednesday but they seemed a bit mystified when I booked it in.

Anybody got any ideas/experiences on this? I suspect a sendor is playing up.

  8. Interesting how you are all comparing a 220d ( a 3 series competitor) against a 5-series or A6! Its coming up in the world!

I have run a 220d (Basic) for 3 years with Teenage daughter and Son at College and can fit most things in the car for Holidays and College trips. You have to be a bit inventive on the packing.

I have had some of the advertised problems but Lexus Bristol have fixed them without fuss and inconveniance. As its a Company Car and I just scraped it in on my level (£22,300) I am extremly happy with it, especially as my level is £3k short of a comparable rep-mobile 3-series or A4!

If the problems have already been fixed and you recognise that it is not as sporty as a 3-series then you will thouroughly enjoy it. If you want to speed everywhere and throw it around the lanes, buy a Porsche!

  9. My 220d has reached 75000 after 33months, Still on the same brake pads but on Monday braking was a totally different matter, it was as if I was on ice. Luckily Lexus Bristol got me booked in on Wednesday with Courtesy car (strange it takes 2 weeks when its a service).

Upshot of it was that the front discs were badly lipped (worn) and the rear Calipers were beginging to seize. Overnight stay and the lease company are light of £1000 (yes one thousand squid)! Thank god it was not my car!!!!!!!! £350 for the front discs and £560 for the rear callipers and new pads. Good job that the front Callipers did not need doing as I suspect the full bill would have been over £1500.

So, if the callipers break at 75,000 miles then there could be some expensive bills for those without warrenty!

  10. We all have our views but I am half way through a 4 year lease and am limited by price to what I can have by my Company. The base 220d was right on my limit and if I wanted anything with comparable quality and toys was looking at several K more for the German Competition. The 3 series even had less leg room in the back than the 220.

I am please with my machine, it has had its problems (leaking Oil seal and water pump), its had the 5th injector done twice and the paintwork crazes at the sight of a stone chip, but it is a great car. It drives well, it is comfortable and above all its not a BMW mass produced clone that fills our Company Car Park. I swapped up from a Laguna Diesel that fell apart after 3 years and cost the leasing company thousands in fixing the Turbo problems they had! The Consumption was 45mpg compared with the 42 I get with the 220 and I have an extra 50 BHP to play with. Yes, the consumption will so down to 38mpg when I put my concrete boots on but that is not why I chose the 220d. If I wanted sport then there are other cars out there that would give me that but I would not have the luxury I have now.

My problem is that proces have gone up but my limit has not so what do I choose next? Funnily enough the Vectra replacement looks a complete copy of the 220d so I may have to go down that route.

So, all you guys out there who like the 220d come out of the closet.
