  1. My IS220d was in for a service last week and they gave me an RX450h as a courtesy car.

Now, this car has auto folding mirrors - but they dont follow the engine, they follow the locking - when you lock the car they fold in, when you unlock the car they fold out. I think this is much better than folding in/out when you stop/start the engine.

It's possibly easier to implement in line with the central locking?

  2. I have pretty much the exact same spec car (Black / Black Leather / SE / Multimedia Pack) on an 07 plate which is on a company car lease due to end in April 2010.

I am tempted to go the other way, to a BMW diesel for the better engines and more dynamic ride. It's not that I dont like the Lexus, it's just that I know there is better out there. My only complaints are with the engine and gearbox though - the engine power band is way too narrow (between 2000 and 3000 revs) and the gears are too high.

    However....

The level of service you get with Lexus is so much better than you get with pretty much any other marque, it really makes me reluctant to move away, even though I know there are better cars to drive out there.

A dealer did tell me that the IS diesel is being phased out over the next couple of years (its Lexus' only diesel) with hybrid technology moving down to the smaller models...

  3. im so glad my ls400 has a tape deck.....

for less than a tenner you get a tape adaptor and for that you get crystal premium quality sound and you can use the mp3 player however you like

Modern technology eh???? they just still havent cracked it have they

    Doesn't the RX400h have a tape deck?

Surely it could be used for something.....

Tape adapters also give a lot better quality sound than an FM transmitter, and much cheaper too!

£12.99 from Argos (I am sure you can get them much cheaper than this, though).

  4. We all know that the RX400H / RX450H are not going to break any records for fuel economy. If you want an ecomonical car, you get a Prius, an Insight or a frugal small petrol or diesel (VW Bluemotion for example)

Sorry, but I do not agree with that.

You can buy a much better all round vehicle in a diesel BMW X5 (even in 'twin turbo' guise) that gives you both economy and power - and I would wager this is superior to the RX Hybrid. The only case for the hybrid that I can see is the London Congestion Charge or for business users, BIK - even on the BIK the X5 pushes the Hybrid close.

I was not saying that the RX hybrid is more economical or better than other vehicles in the class, the point I was making is that people who buy the RX hybrid are not buying it for economy (or they are very misinformed if they are!) but for ticking the green credentials of it being a hybrid. Maybe the X5 is a better, more economical vehicle as a package, but my own personal preference would be an RX - I prefer the styling, I'm not saying it is any better, I just prefer it.

  5. I agree with everything you say about the vehicle, but I think the bigger picture needs to be considered here.

We all know that the RX400H / RX450H are not going to break any records for fuel economy. If you want an ecomonical car, you get a Prius, an Insight or a frugal small petrol or diesel (VW Bluemotion for example)

The market the RX4xxH models are aimed at are people who need / want an SUV (4x4) type vehicle, but want to tick the 'green' boxes - but not necessarily being green, but being seen to be green!

The reason for the 600h flop is that generally, people who are buying this class of car do not give a s**t about ticking green boxes and their money is better spent on BMW 7 series and Merc S class anyway.

  6. "OK - I didn't know that there was a caliper problem - that makes sense now.

What did they do for the seat? "

Mine was not a caliper problem.

The discs were below wear limit (30000 miles!!!) and the pads needed a change.

Simply, there s apparently a loophole in the warrant that - as it is a wear item they do not consider 30000 miles fair wear and tear and replace.

The seat was saggy. No comparison to any Mercedes/ Audi/ BMW vehicle have had - they agreed and changed it. No argument.

They are on the way to becoming my best ever dealer for service.

    cj

I can can concur with that. Kind of makes you want to only ever have a Lexus. But I guess that's the idea, right?

  7. I think its worth pointing out that in reality all the Lexus Hybrid cars are that way for performance rather than economy.

GS450H - V8 power from a V6 engine. How do they do that? With help from electric motors.

RX400h - V8 power from a V6 engine. How do they do that? Yep, you guessed it, with help from electric motors.

If they had big V8 engines, no one would buy them (well, ok, less people anyway) and it's a clever marketing ploy to give you a performance car, with acceptable economy that also 'ticks some boxes' for the green brigade.

Lexus don't make or market economical cars - they are branded as a luxury car maker and are trying to soften the blow of running a large, comfortable fast car by using hybrid technology.

Customers who want economy buy a small car with a small engine - and the most economical for local short runs is a modern small petrol engine.

  8. Well, I have done the deed and ordered an A5 this afternoon via our leasing company

    A5 2.0TDI 170 Sport

    Deep Sea Blue

    Sat Nav

    Advanced Parking System

    Heated Seats

    Auto Hill Start

Auto Dimming Mirror (inc auto wipers/headlights)

    Bluetooth Low

    Cruise Control

    Cost : £31600

The only option i debated was the 'comfort access key' but decided to miss it in favour of the advanced parking.

Audi are offering a free upgrade from 2.0TDi to the Sport model and also including bluetooth and cruise control. This gave a reduced list price, reduced lease rate and lower tax bill so meant i could add a few extra options.

Also Audi have a price increase coming in on 23rd Feb so hopefully I have avoided that (though not sure yet)

Another bonus may be that Audi website is now saying the CO2 emissions are 139 versus the 140 it said in Jan so thats 1% off my tax bill

Only down side is that my current lease doesn't expire until 1st week of May so thats the earliest I can have the A5.

Thanks for all the advice and I have to say that I got better input from you guys than the Audi forums.

Don't forget to post some pics once she's arrived! :winky:

  9. To be fair the iPhone itself can actually transfer an entire address book at one time via Bluetooth - it's a shame Lexus / Toyota didn't implement this functionality in the carkit as it would make life easier for most phones - ie one big pull rather than multiple contact pushes via Bluetooth.

I have an Iphone 3G and am pretty sure it cannot do any form of file transfer whatsoever (whether that be files, photos, contacts or whatever).

As far as I know, the Bluetooth implementation on the Iphone only supports handsfree - ie use your car as the biggest Bluetooth head set in the world!

Thats why the first guy had to type his in manually. The Toyota / Lexus Bluetooth does support transfer of contacts as I have used my Windows Mobile HTC phone to transfer my phone contacts.

    Hope this clarifies the situation.

  10. Received call from the director an hour or so ago, wifey took it as I was out. More apologies and excuses, seems he has been fed the same bull**** stories from his workers as we have. latest is now...

They come for car on Monday, leave free courtesy car, fix it properly, return it with full tank of petrol,

fully free next service, ( what is this worth incidentally? )

any future courtesy car will always be totally free ( no ridiculous £10 insurance surcharge).

I am lucky enough to have a really good Lexus dealer near me - although it surely shouldn't be a lottery of where you live dictates what level of service you get from Lexus.

Also, not to rub salt in the wound, but my brother has a Skoda Fabia and he has a had a vastly superior service to this (not to mention fewer problems in the first place, makes ya wonder)!

There is really no excuse whatsoever for this level of service.

  11. A February 2007 220d Sport here. Not much miles on the clock (2000 or so), but seems to return around 46 mpg on the highway. That's right, 46 mpg with a fresh Sport. The best trip average I've seen so far was almost 48 mpg. Very happy with mine, obviously :D

    Very happy with mine.

Have a 220D Se, long motorway runs give 40-41 mpg (Oxfordshire to Kent) and local trips (town) can see 38 mpg lowest.

Could be getting more though, perhaps 44-45mpg - maybe it's my driving style.

And I dont hang about either!

  12. Hi All,

Wondering if someone could advise me.

I took delivery of a new IS220d a couple of weeks ago.

I have been browsing through the manuals, and I have noticed that there is no reference to a phone number to call in the event of a breakdown. I know that the car has Lexus Roadside Assistance for 3 years provided by the RAC.

My last car, an Audi A4, had similar cover, and the number was printed on a small credit card sized card placed in a pocket on the front of the document wallet.

The only number I can find is the LRA Administration number in the service/warranty book. I phoned them and they said I could use that number (0800 169 0393) and they would transfer me to the RAC. I then asked if the number was answered 24/7 to which she replied no then gave me the RAC number 0800 246 866.

    So, I have two questions:

    1. Are the numbers above the correct numbers?

    2. Should there have been a little card or something left for me in the car or in the document wallet?

I am pretty confident I will never have to use the LRA, but I don't want to be caught short with a problem in the middle of the night and cant find any phone numbers!

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Mark
