  1. My 93 1st gen 400 has just returned a healthy 28mpg on a round trip to north yorkshire, and back to london using mainly motorways and fast A roads, [A1, A1M M25] at a steady 70 mph. The car has done 131800 miles and ran perfectly, testement to the build quality of these V8's and transmissions. Oil will be drained again in the next week or so and fresh put in. I change the oil every 3,000 miles.

  2. I have been looking at the posts on here regarding programming of remotre entry fobs,and have tried a couple of methods but with no luck.

    My car is a 93 model ls400 and all i have had up till now is a key with no chip that i have been using in the door, so i purchased fairly cheeply, i might add, a remote entry fob but need to get it programmed to my cars system, can anyone tell me if there is a dedicated method to programming a 93 model and is there only a certain type of fob that will work with this model year.

Hi there mate, you can replace just the one bearing that is failing as it is not a crittical part as they say in mot speak, but you will have to take into account that if you have one failing then you may have more close to going pear shaped also, as they may have the same mileage as the failed item, unless of course others have been changed before. Check with a local motor factor for a price on the bearing as it maybe a part that is common among many other makes and models and may save you a fortune. Is your fuel gauge working correctly? that would be the first concern as the fuel gauges are very prone to going wrong, i would look to replace the caps on the instument cluster first and then see if the fuel return to distance travelled goes up. or down. i have jut sorted mine and the needle is falling at a very slow rate.

    fill the tank till the pump stops then take it on a good long run and make a note of the dstance driven, than refill till the pump stops then work the miles per gallon.

  5. These cars are normally first class, i had a 400 for a couple of years without 1 single problem.

    Even though it was a p reg i could not hear it tick over.

    It is worth having the car checked over hopfully it is only a plug or ht lead breaking down...

    Welcome to the club, and maybe someone with more techo will help you on here..

    I have a 93 400 and it is great, i suspect that if it started after the car wash i would think that you have get water on the coils or leads, or even have soaked the air filter or MAF, check all is dry and if you have to change the leads plugs and coils. The car will appricate the new ignition parts after 24 years or so. Let us know how you get on.

    You will find that there are alot of gen1 owners out here matey, in my opinion i think that they are the best looking is400 made as the newer models all seem to blend into one jelly mold type shape. Sort the common probs that the gen1 cars suffer and it will easy last another 16 years with good servicing. ENJOY THE GEN1.

    Well I appreciate your reassuring comments! And of course, I was only joking when I used the word 'peasants'. :winky: However, if you saw my car's paintwork you'd definitely think that I fell into that category. :P

    Actually, I do think the series 1 is the better looking, followed by the series 4. The series 3 I could take or leave, (Oh dear, looks like I just upset a load more people and alienated myself yet again! :o )

  8. Good News :) I have manged to get the new bushes in and re assembled the wishbone.

    Last night I did the other side of the car. It took less than half the time so far and I have taken a load of pics.

    Pictorial Tutorial to follow shortly and the parts are the right sizes.

    It would be fantastic if you could give the part no's as well and where you got them as well as prices as this is my next job to do. i have got the trailing arm bushes on order from the states but the upper control arms/wish bones are not listed.

    the more info you can provide will be of help to a lot of owners out here in interwebby land.

    Just had my car Wim'd and the caster is way out, its even both sides but over 1 degree outside the allowable range, Lexus sell replacement lower control arm bushings in different sizes to adjust the caster but this will only bring it within 1/2 degree of tolerance.

    Lexus say it doesn't matter as they are both even but Tony says this is a long way out and tyre wear will be excessive (which it is)

    Spent a good few hours googling to no avail. Also asked on a couple of USA forums so hoping for luck there

    Has anyone seen/heard of an adjustable mount for the 2001 LS430 that would allow more adjustment..

    If not I think I will try to modify an existing bushings mount, I'd have to move the bolt hole 5mm to get back to tolerance...

    Any help/ideas, greatly appreciated

    I know this might seem a silly question but whilst you and tony were under the car did you see anything that is bent or damaged, as 5mm is a sizable ajustment to make if everything is pukka. Tony had problems with my set up as the set back on the front cross member is out by a small amount on the drivers side making the steering wheel off centre. Gary

  10. haha, they are not that bad, however i will finalise my judgement on monday, as the gs300 sport we have is going through a little test, liverpool to manchester every day cruised at 70mph! clocked up 151 miles so far and has gone just over a quarter. fastest it got driven so far is 73mph for an overtake. see wat we can get out of the 80litres. will let u know.

    as for the ls430, got around 29mpg out of it with mixed driving, mainly motorway but start stop aswell

    Well it looks like mine now i have fixed the caps on the cluster.

  11. Hi Gary

    If your window has just packed up but you can hear it trying, you could try removing the door trim and making sure it's not just stuck, I sell quite a few later Rav4's and I've had this on a couple of them, all I've had to do is loosen the fixings for the motor/regulator to the door, wiggle the glass, operate the motor then retighten the bolts. Always seems to fix it.

    Otherwise it could be the master switch or of course wiring. Peugeot 306's etc really suffer from broken wires into the drivers door by the hinge, I've had Audi A4's with bad earths on the back doors to.

    THANKS PAUL FOR THE REPLY TO MY PROBLEM , I WIL GIVE THAT A TRY AT THE WEEKEND AND POST UP THE RESULTS, THATS IF IT STOPS RAINING LONG ENOUGH TO TRY. IF NOT LOOKS LIKE THE ELECTRICAL TESTER WILL HAVE TO BE DUSTED OFF AND USED IN ANGER.

  12. My LS400 brake wear sensor came on the other week (whilst I was towing a car on a trailer..... always good for the nerves, that). So today, I finally got around to checking all the pads. Rears were well down (replaced), but the fronts still have over 1/2 the pad thickness remaining, yet both sensor wires are down on the disc!!

    I reckon I've got at least another 3-4000 miles in them yet. But obviously I'll have to buy a new set of sensor wires, as by the time I'm ready to replace the pads, I'll have worn my way all the way through the wires.... that'll be another £60-odd then. Of course, I would save myself the cost of the wires & just change the pads (or take the wires off), but one of them's already worn all the way through the lead contact & is eating the wires, so I'd need new ones even now.

    Grumble.

    Oh, a couple of questions:

    1) If I have to do an emergency stop (or very hard braking), the warning triangle on the dash lights up. It goes out again as soon as I've stopped braking. Had that twice on the motorway recently (usually when some eejit pulls out from behind a lorry, having failed to notice me "making progress". Any idea why this should be? Brake fluid level is fine, maybe it's getting a bit old & wants replacing?

    2) I've obviously got a dicky stop-light, as sometimes the warning light comes on & stays on. Usually, opening & closing the boot is enough to cure this for a period of time (or, firmly tapping the light cluster with the palm of my hand). The trouble is, I've never managed to diagnose it... Is it likely to be a loose bulb, or a bad joint somewhere?

    Just replced a pad sensor on my 93 ls400 and it cost £52.00. what a rip off, but being silly old me it is something that just has to be done., ie if its broke i gotta fix it. I have not had it long and i am still fixing the bodges that the last owner did. I wil get it sorted though. just you watch and toyota will all the richer foe it as well.

    Just bought a passenger side one off the bay for £61 inc p+p....Fitted ok and no problems at all after 1000miles. Inspection of the part compared with the one removed showed all the same markings as the lexus one and the pressed bearing seemed exactly the same. Up to this point I would recommend one, but time will tell if it is worth the money!.....Also,I would add that the part was delivered within 3-days of order! Well worth a punt.

    Steve why dont you get the poly bushes [ www.daizensporttuning.com] from the states, and rebush the arms that you have. It cost just over £80 in sterling 160 us dollers shipped and arrived in 3 days. then you will have bushes that will out last the car.

    It sounds perfect and so much cheaper! Is it really that simple? Is there any downside or things I need to be aware of?

    I have just fitted the poly bushes to my car and the upper arm joint was ok but the lower arm ball joint was shot, so repacement oe ball joints were ordered and i fitted said parts yesterday.
