  1. HI, just read about your irritating boot leak. I have a MK1 & MK3 that had the same problem. I found the solution after months of trying, including being shut in the boot while someone else hosed the car!! The water is coming in BETWEEN the two welded panels underneath the boot seam/gasket, because they are only spot welded and the water syphons up the bottom seam. Take off the bottom part of the seal and use some insulating tape to make a masking bead right across the bottom ledge, then put the beading seal back on top of it. It cured mine!!The telltale sign was when I took the edging seal off, underneath you could see signs of water & rust. Hope you get to read this and more so, try it! All the best,Dave8

  2. I had a very similar predicament when I bought my 97 Mk III just over a year ago. It was on a dealer's front for £2100 and very tidy, with 130,000 on the clock. The passenger and rear seats looked completely unused and the salesman told me the owner of the past 7 years was a racehorse owner who used the car to follow his horse box around the country.

Unfortunately, the guy had apparently lost the service history acquired during his ownership, but alleged that he had it serviced annually.

I had a good look around; the engine bay and interior were immaculate and, other than a few minor scratches on the rear offside wing, the body was good. I took it for a decent test ride, accelerated, braked, went up and down a couple of hills and everything seemed to work fine. I was then left with a choice: walk away or take a risk.

The lack of service history enabled me to barter the price down to £1650 and I took the plunge. 14 months later the only problems I've had were a rear suspension spring (£150 to replace) and two worn front tyres; it sailed through the MOT without a problem. It has a number of irritating faults common to the model: leaking boot seals, heated seats not working, back-light on stereo failed, memory settings for seats kaput, but it's still an awful lot of car for the money. I say go for it, most LS owners are responsible people who look after their cars properly.

  3. Hi,

Day off work today so decided to reset the airbag light which was on when I bought the car ( probably after the speedo/delimiter work)

Found out how to reset it and made the switching unit, this consisted of an electric window switch from a r*v*r car and threepieces of wire with pin inserts.

Crapping myself I followed the instructions and low and behold it worked!!! no more airbag light constantly glowing red at me and spoiling the dash display.

If anyone has the same problem and would like to borrow the kit ( for the price of a stamp both ways) to reset it please contact me.

Just got to reset the passenger ejector seat now (well she was late for work!!!!!)

  4. My Lexus LS 400 1992 has a standard radio/aircon dispay. Everything lights up and works INCLUDING the interior temp, but, the upper display for the time clock and temp setting is not visible. I think it is just a bulb issue in this upper segment. The problem is, I have to remove the gear surround, ashtray, then radio first, just to get to the last bit thats not lit! How do these items come out? is there a quicker way? An idiots guide would do nicely if anyone can help. Thanks ...Dave Eight.

  5. I'm fairly sure I have one (too dark and cold).

Its not to do with reversing sensors or to do with towing equipment, as I have both.

I'm tempted to suggest it may be a throw-back to earlier models which may have had the cd in the boot rather than in its own glove box.

Or it could be the lead for a mobile aerial.

    Steve

Hi, I own a MK1 and the CD changer is on the right (drivers side) is this the left side? anyway not fitted in my Mk1 Dave Eight

  6. Hi everyone, just joined and need some help. Anybody know of a replacement electric aerial that doesn't cost another mortgage? Will the standard Toyota job fit the LS400? or a bosch? I have the old one removed and see that it don't lock to the rear wing just a push fit & held at the base by a bracket. Hope to rebuild soon ....Any help appreciated, especially with engine photo's for strip & rebuild..Cheers, DAVE 8,
