  1. This was in broad daylight and right next to a busy entrance that had people coming in and out all the time, I cannot believe that it's that easy and that people have the nerve to do these things under people's noses

It is because the general public in the UK love to turn the blind eye... instead of facing up to the problems. It's not just theft, but assault, bullying (at work even more so), harrassment (i.e. dodgy neighbours), etc. It's funny though... you find someone jumping a queue in the UK and there's hell on!!! On the continent people will look in amazement if you start to form a queue!

I am sorry to hear you got your car broken into Lexus Jim... perhaps you'll be a little smarter on where you leave your car parked from now on? Leaving it with nobody for a good few hundred yards in any direction is asking for trouble... even if you'd heard your alarm it'd take far too long to get back to your car to do anything about it! Some people don't do a lot to help themselves... sorry, harsh-but-true words. It's people who use little common sense who push up the premuims for the rest of us!

  2. Having tried all the other suggestions already it sounds like Chris Shipley has the answer - will try and get fuse box and let you know. This has been driving me crazy for days so thanks

If the car is just out of warranty, then Lexus should still honour the fix. It sounds like a problem which builds over time... not a sudden impact, so the problem probably started whilst your car still was in warranty. No harm in speaking to your dealer!

  3. Hello everybody I’m a newbie so be gentle. Had the car for two weeks and love it.  First mod I am thinking about is clear rear fogs anyone had any experience buying and fitting them. Is it worth purchasing the red LED's at the same time, and how do you think they would look on a red car ?

    Welcome.

Everyone to their own, but I would've thought that the standard red fog lights on a red car would already look good?

I have a black car and am looking to paint my rear fogs black (but still allowing the light to pass thru). I am also looking to paint the front light housing black just like yemgi has done. ((Take a peek at some of his car photo's linked in his sig.))

  4. Your not going to end up sliding backwards into tree's unless you drive like an absolute muppet.

I had my Lexus for three days... the first RWD car I have ever driven. Came to a r/bout in the wet and wanted the first left (should really be a slip road since the r/bout is a fast one!). I was doing about 35... the road has a 60 limit.

TRC was on but that didn't stop my a$$ from sliding away from me.:o Due to playing V-rally excessively on the PS1 all those years ago I had the foresight to ease off the accelerator and turn into the skid. The car corrected but I was fortunate the left-turn off that r/bout is two lanes, and that there was no other traffic on the road!!

Mate was ssoooooo happy that I'd come to pick him up. His missus had just given birth to his son about three weeks previous, and this was the first night out after the birth. Needless to say his wife doesn't allow me to pick him up any more!

You learn from your mistakes... I am lucky such a mistake did not cost me more than the time-and-effort I needed to spend to get my wheels re-balanced.

Moral of the story : Don't put yer foot down in the wet until the car is straight.

  5. Mr Hickman I still stand by my anti-microsoft stance. Most IT bods I work with wont use IE Outlook for the reason I wont and we find very few sites now that will not work Netscape, Mozillia or Opera. However more sites fail with the Mozillia ( and Netscape 6 upwards) but netscape comunicator is fine. I am currently using LOC with Netscape 7.1 no problems.

I was talking about browsers, not email packages.

The company I work for uses the very secure Netscape Messenger for email (since MS Outlook is fundamentally flawed and commonly abused), but we still use IE for browsing. You cannot get a common virus from purely browsing. I say common because I know there is a way to infect machines via browsing alone. This is slowly-but-surely becoming common knowledge and it will not be long before the copy-cat "virus" writers are using pre-written packages to create hybrid duplicates of this ability too! Believe me, not all virus writers do damage... infact most people paid to do the job make the average-joe-public-PC-user's life a lot easier!

The only reason IE is so popular is because Micro$oft packaged it up as a freebie browser with Windows. If IE was a product which was sold independently from Windows then Micro$oft would not have a ~97% monopoly in the browser market... because IE is not as good as Netscape Communicator and Micro$oft know it.

  6. here is my home config (for the security conscious (paranoid??)):

    Zoom ADSL modem (ethernet)

Linksys Firewall Router connected to Zoom on one side, PC1 on the other side

PC1: Cheap Pentium 100 with two network cards, running smoothwall

    SMC 8 port switch

    2 Linux PC's (running IPTables)

2 Windows XP PC's (running ZoneAlarm)

Jees... how much upper memory have you got assigned for all the DLL's you must be running..?

Do you have rear port access disabled to your PC1? I believe most standard firewalls don't allow you to specify this type of access (and so cannot disable it). You have to manually write a script to flood your "backdoor" so no more data can come thru.

Just to ensure your PC is totally secure!

  7. I would also recomend people look at using Opera, Mozilla or ( the last) Netscape in place of IE and Outlook the reason is they are not Microsoft products therefore do not get attacked as much and they have less bug fixes sent out for them.

Micro$oft own ~97% of the browser market via their free give-away of Internet Explorer. This is why most virus hybrid copy-cats attack IE.

On the flip-side though, most internet websites only cater for IE usage and do not take the time to accept Netscape browsers. There is nothing wrong with Netscape as a browser. Micro$oft programs (Word / Excel / Project etc.) deliberately interrupt Netscape which is why Netscape users get so many software conflicts... it has nothing to do with Netscape and more to do with Micro$oft wanting to monopolise the browser market.

  8. At the risk of casting virus-authors as stereotypes, I'd say they are all socially inept ****s.

I'd guarantee that none of them own a Lexus, coz if they did, they'd have more respect for other peoples property!! :o

A small minority of virus-authors are intelligent people... they have to be. These people get paid by an organisation to cause as much havoc as possible in that organisation. There are other people who are paid from the same organisation to try and stop them. I am a senior analyst now for a major blue-chip organisation, but I started out as a trainee computer programmer and was amazed at the amount of money which was ploughed into security. This cat-and-mouse strategy helps organisations to tighten-up their virus-checking / security algorithms. Who do you think writes the anti-virus code?.. and who do you think tries to tighten-up the virus-checking algorithms before the anti-virus software is released??.... virus writers!!!

I must agree though that not all virus writers are "clever"... most copy-cats use one of the many, many easy-to-use virus creation programs which just produce hybrids. A decent virus-protection setup will spot these hybrids a mile-off and you should never be infected by one of these simple copies.

  9. Off topic but I lost one of my locking wheel nut covers, any smart ideas where to get some?.. :winky:

Yeah. My car was in getting the wheels re-balanced (wasn't done in pre-car pickup routine) and I noticed one of the locking-wheel nut covers was missing. I phoned Lexus Newcastle but the said it must not have been attached when they received the vehicle.

I have no way of proving the cover was attached, and Lexus Newcastle seemed rather reluctant to offer any sort of customer service loyalty (like just get me another one).

I have no idea where to get one cover from. I believe you can buy a set of four locking wheel nut covers. There is another post about it somewhere but I tried searching for "wheel nut" but got no matching threads.

  10. ...best to try your dealer and see what he says.

No, I don't think I'll bother. I don't think I would like the fact of the boot springing up and bouncing on the hinges. As long as the boot unlocks that's fine by me.

Up north we get a lot of rain (there's not as much pollution so the rain get's thru!) so auto-opening the boot doesn't sound like a good idea to me. Everyone to their own I guess.

  11. My wife's dad is always cleaning, polishing, and waxing his bloody car. His opinion is far better than my opinion so I phoned him and asked what he does.

    Dash

Rubs down the dash with warm soapy water to remove marks.

Use the Dyson to pick up any loose hairs / dust / remnants left over from the cloth.

Applies "Back To Black" direct onto a cloth and rubs onto the dash for a very, very nice finish.

    Inside

Uses a household window cleaner to clean the inside of the windows.

Uses a normal damp cloth to clean the non-fabric parts.

Uses the Dyson to clean the fabric.

    Outside

Uses a product which he buys from Halfords (sorry, don't know which one) instead of using warm soapy water. Apparently using a household product (like fairy liquid for instance) is bad for your car wax!

He uses a chamois (from Halfords) after washing the entire car which helps to remove all water marks.

He uses a waxing product bought from Halfords (sorry, don't know which one).

My wife is actually (supposed to be!) taking my Lexus over to her dads today. He's got the day off so I said he could spend it cleaning my car... he was so happy. Weird, but I didn't complain.

  12. The high-level Altezza roof spoiler with a clear brake-light strip would look awesome... you saying you don't like that pictured Altezza spoiler?

Yeah, I agree that the wire would need to go thru some sort of drill hole which would be a huge problem. Isn't there a hole where the radio antenna goes though... that could be used surely if the spoiler was designed correctly.

  13. Ooooh, I got all excited for a minute there...

Both the "Ugo Style Polyurethane Roof Spoiler" and "Ugo Style Carbon Fiber Roof Spoiler" do not have a built-in brake light.

I'll keep on looking... there's bound to be one (or two) somewhere! Perhaps there's a gap in the market I can exploit here..??

I found part number "L611103" is the IS300 Rear Spoiler (with lamp), but this fits onto the boot lid. I want one that fits above the rear window.

  14. If you are after the high level one (above the rear window as on the BMW 3-series schnitzer kits), I think lextacy does one - I have definately seen them.

There is a company in GOLD that can supply them - theres a picture on one of the websites.

Cool... I suppose I'll have to trawl thru the many, many, many threads which offer GOLD discounts to see if I can see a piccy anywhere. Cheers for the info. and I'll check out Lextasy again (I must have missed it?).

  15. WOW... after a few searches I finally found this old thread. I was having difficulty finding any rear spoilers for an IS200 with brake-lights.

I found this W-Type one which looks pretty OK.

Problem is, I am after a high-level spoiler with brake-light included. Does anyone know if these are available for the IS200. High-level = fitted above the rear window.
