  1. Guys,

Need your help please! Have been asked to be one of two(!) "Best Men" for a very good friend of mine. Have thankfully most things sorted but one thing I'm struggling with are recommendations for good places to go out in Cambridge! Have asked everyone I know but no one seems to have been there for a night out :(

So...if any of you could suggest some good bars/clubs there it would be very much appreciated!

    Cheers :)

there is NO good places in Cambridge.....................bloody dull place

  2. with fuel prices and mileage on the up and income going down its time to make a decision.

Ive toyed with the idea of gasing the LS for 12 months. Now i have a decision to make.

so i was wondering what i might expect to get to the gallon on LPG.

I do mainly rural and motorways and average 25/26 mpg.

Its going to cost £900 to get the car gased. The cars probably worth £750 to £1,000 as is.

I just wonder if its worth it.

    not worth it mate.

  3. Hi,

Would like to know when should I change a timing belt in a GS 300?

Mk 1 GS 300 is every 60k or every 6 years, whichever is soonest. Not sure on Mk 2. A quick phone call to any Lexus dealer would be quickest way to find out if you don't have an owners manual.

I have just changed mine (that crank pulley was pig to undo) and it had done 95,000 miles. It was in perfect condition - could have gone a lot longer. The tensioner pulley was fine . Small amount of play but smooth running)

perfect condition after 95k miles?????????????// get yourself magnifieng glass and have aproper look between the teeth./////////////////////////////////////// 3yrs/40000miles cambelt change interval reccomended by toyota in japan for japanese customers.think about it........

  4. Hi, I've been driving my old GS300 without problems for ages, but suddenly when I turn the key to start it all I get is a click. this happens about half the time. I first suspected the alternator, so tested it and the bettery. Ther battery hold a good charge and the alternator supplies a steady and healthy voltage when I measure its output while in idle. So now I'm wondering if its the immobilizer system at fault. Up to now I have always been able to get the car to start eventually. Usually when the fault occours it only clicks, then after a few attempts to start there is a sluggish turnover which halts. then after another one or two attempts the sluggish turnover gradually picks up speed and the car starts. I get the feeling that if I hold the key close to the start position but not quite, for a few seconds I can get the car to turn over more rapidly once I go to the start position. The other thing is, if I stop and restart the car sometimes its start no problem and sometime it goes through the clicking and nonstarting routine. Is there a simple way to defeat the immobilizer or bypass it somehow to test if it is in fact that thats the issue..? Anyway I hope someone can come up with some insight. Many thanks in advance.

get your starter motor repaired.if fault persist contact your dealer........

  5. Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum as I just bought a mk4 Lexus LS400 (1999) on Friday. I've been really impressed with it, so silky smooth and powerful. I was looking for something that can carry 4 adults in comfort for long distance journeys and the LS does that so well! It's the reliability reputation that convinced my to go for a Lexus as opposed to a 7 series or an XJ8.

The car has a good service record and seems to be in excellent condition. It feels like a band new car! The only thing I have noticed is a slight clunking sound when driving over a pothole for example in town. Nothing too bad though.

In terms of maintenance, is there anything I should be looking out for in particular? What type of engine oil do you guys recommend?

Also, can anyone recommend a good parts suppliers? Although I hope not to need many parts of course, but every cars needs a few bits and pieces from time to time.

    Thanks

    Norm

getting parts for 1999 ls400 is nightmare.soon you'll need exhaust and/or cats[cost you fortune].make sure cambelt has been changed ,otherwise put aside £1500 for replacement engine.car doing just 18mpg on average but can do up to 30mpg on motorways.obviously your car has been neglected if you getting suspension noises.

  6. So, thanks for the help here re the tyre pressure pressure sensors-that's sorted. The car has sat on a trickle charger in the garage while a few other things were sorted. I phoned for some insurance quotes having done the Money Spupermarket thing...quoting for mum and dad (in their late 60's flawless driving records, reasonable postcode) the car is around £800 per year to insure on limited mileage. I paid £400 on my 911!! Any reason these cars are so heavy to insure? Any recomendations for firms to use?

3party only will cost you about £200 if you know how to buy policy onlinemsn-wink.gif

  7. turbo has the wastegate, so I don't think it may blow the turbo, but definitely the overall temperature will be higher when using power, so you should decrease your oilchange interval.

The other questions are whether the clutch will handle the power and how the d-cat will handle more pollens.

I definitely wouldn't go for such a chip.

what wastegate??????????????????? who told you that?........it'll blow headgasket and/or turbo

  8. Well I knew the day would come when me and my Lexus would part. It is hard to believe that nearly three years has past since I first vistited these forums all excited about my knew car. On the whole my Lexus IS220D se-l Nav/srf was a great car and my first premium car with as many toys as I could ever wish for. From my experience the 220d gets a bad wrap for nothing. Yes the gearing was not perfect and yes the MPG was not the best in class. ( I got 39.7 over the 3 years I had it). Overall I was very happy.#

I have now purchased a new Mercedes E-class Coupe E350 AMG Sport. I have checked most of thee boxes to get to the level of toys that I am used to. I had a loan car from them on Friday past and did a normal work type trip to which my Lexus was used to. It managed 46.8 over 148 miles and lets say I had some fun with it to. It only had 700 miles on the clock. I have opted to do a personal collection from the factory in Bremen so that should be special.

Anyway thanks to all those who have posted on here over the years and given advice etc, it has been a great place of learning and good fun at times.

    Regards Gtione

  9. I reckon the engine is a little quieter in the mark 3

Everyone who comments on my MKIII remarks as to how quiet the engine sounds and, when I tell them its done 188k, they are gobsmacked.

Camping at silverstone over the weekend, i had started the engine on my LS400 to charge my phone and make sure i didn't discharge the Battery doing it, i then moved the car to in front of the tent about 20 mins later my wife asked from in the tent if i wanted the jump leads to start the car, I replied "what the one thats runnign 6 feet from you?" she was very surpised she couldn't hear it, it's done 229k now as well, again a mk3 1995.

    I'd still have a mk4 though :)

hows your phone will discharge car Battery? u barkin mate...

  10. Hi,

I am still not sure whether I should go for a III or IV.

As I understand, the IV has:

    - a satnav that I won't need (I have my own portable device) with a 10 year-old touch screen that could, if it fails, hinder the use of other amenities (A/C, sound system),

    - a more powerful VVT-i engine,

    - a slightly better gas mileage (not sure about that, I have seen contradicting figures),

    - more modern looks.

    The III has:

    - no touch screen, but good old buttons to control everything (both more reliable and cheaper to repair in my mind),

    - a good engine that is powerful, not too thirsty for a V8 and that can't be damaged by a snapping cambelt,

    - will usually have more mileage, being a few years older.

    Am I right?

I will import the car in France and will do 1500 miles highway runs between the south of France and Germany every few weeks. I want the car for comfort and reliability. The car needs to be more than 10 years old for insurance reasons (before 2000 "X" registration), I have a budget of circa 3000 pounds, and may have to consider the price of changing the headlights to continental right-hand traffic (does anyone knows how much it costs in the UK?).

What would you recommend between Mk III and Mk IV? Are there any pros/cons for one or the other that I don't know?

    Thanks for any help/comment.

MK2 and keep 2500 quid for repairs

  11. Hi,

I'm in the market for a Lexus LS430 with an LPG conversion. Will consider most cars as long as its been well looked after. Can promise to give your car a good home!

Want to spend around £5-6k, though might be tempted to pay a little more for a facelift model

Let us know what you have!

    Many Thanks

    Tom Reay

for £5-6k you'll get catD insurance writeoff even if you promise to give car a good home[what a load of nonsence]

  12. Just a random thought but does anybody know if its possible to replace the electric window switches for auto ones like the drivers window has? Is it just a matter of taking the switch out and replacing it with auto ones?

wats the difference between electric and auto?its a same thing.blink.gif

  13. Has anyone replaced there LS400's viscous fan with an electric one or know of where i can get a kit to do this? only realised otherday that i have a viscous fan (i hardly ever pop the bonnet and look in that area usually just check oil then close again.

I had a sierra Xr4x4 with the 2.9 cologne engine and knew that taking off the viscous and sticking in electric fans from DOHC sierra used to give abig bonus to MPG and BHP and would like to do same for my LS400.

    thanks

    £1300 for lpg conversion?thats a rip-off mate.actual kit costs only£250 and 2hrs labour

  14. how does it help for mpg by turning on the snow mode on the motorway?

    never heard this before...

and which injector cleaner do you use and how often?

    Thanks

I know you were talking to the other poster but I was going to say I use SNOW mode on my IS200 Auto and my GS300 because it makes the throttle response less peaky when pulling away and accelerating. On the motorway I use cruise control anyway so SNOW or ECT PWR modes make no real difference to my driving.

When I did use injector cleaner, it was Redex from Halfords.

in SNOW MODE your car will start from 3rd gear.never heared of it?excl.gif

  15. I bought my IS200 after having never even been in a Lexus before, plus i bought it from somewhere 3 1/2 hrs away & online and hadnt even seen the car in person lol (and it cost £1000's i might add). I got it last friday and i am the most pedantic man around now, fussing over the smallest things over it and just want to clean it all the time, i spent 3 days cleaning it already and now looking forward to the weekend when i can clean it again and test out some new products on it :S

I just love it. The first car i have had with a 6 speed, rear wheel drive and many other features. Just the folding wing mirrors make me crack a smile each time :)

    folding mirrors?how long you've been driving cars?icon14.gif

  16. Hi,

I'm new to this, so might be doing it all wrong !! Anyway, does anyone know where I could acquire a replacement exhaust system (or certain parts of one) for a 96 LS400. I've been told that Lexus are no longer manufacturing them. The rest of the car is superb, so it's certainly not ready for an early grave just because of this.

    Hi and welcome.

As Malc says, there are threads on here. Just use the search facility at the bottom left. Use exhaust as a term but use others too, flanges, cats etc.

There are no pattern parts available, so nipping down to Kwikfit is a waste of time. I very much doubt you will need a whole system and If you do, Lexus would want a very large sum.

    The options are

to find a sound used system/part system

to replace the flanges and the odd other bit

buy a new one - if you can find/afford 1

    have a specialist make a system/part system.

See the older threads and then come back here.

    kwik-fit?you're barkin mate

PM me your chassis number and the parts you require and I will tell you if they are still available :) and how much.

parts still available but dodgy dealers will rip you off.......offtopic.gif
  18. In the past I have tried BP ultimate and Shell optimax in my 97 2.2 Prelude vtec, and I could never feel or see any difference in either consumption or performance.

I have done the same with the GS300 Sport, and yet again I could see no improvement, however over the past month or so when filling up I have been swapping between full tanks of Unleaded and Super Unleaded, and i'm now convinced that Tesco Super Unleaded gives me better performance and mpg.

Has anyone else experienced the same?

tesco petrol will aventually clogg the bloody whole fuel system....................2]all lexuses desighned to work on 98 ron unleded petrol, using 95RON will reset crank sensor to low wich will result on 20% less horses your engine produce on 98RON.sadly 98RON not avail. in this dumb country[u.k.]. only 97ron wich called here super unleded.excl.gif
