  1. Got the car back today and happy to report the boot is now fixed and working as normal. For some reason it sounds a bit louder than before, like robocop slowly moving his head to face you before uttering "at your service". Don't remember what his signature quote was. Sounds cooler than before so I don't mind. It's working again that's what's important. Croydon lexus was a dream to deal with. Always have been. Don't get me wrong they are still expensive but compared to the ideas and self diagnostics discussed here along with quotes of £1600+ I think it's a steal.

  2. Sorry for the delay. I spoke to lexus to ask if it was OK to make everyone here aware of the deal I got for this fix. Lewis Castle is the person who deals with this stuff at lexus Croydon. The cost including parts and labour for me is £990. The car is currently at lexus Croydon and they are keeping it overnight to diagnose a different issue. If you are close by, or even a bit further out, it might be worth coming to Croydon to get this fixed.  Might take a full day so you might need to hang around here if you are coming from far.

Had my order for 68910-48023 (RX450h 2010-2012) from Emirates cancelled by megazip.net. Apparently they are out of stock. Price on the website jumped from about $400 to $1400 (currenly available from Japan only).

If anybody interested, this part currently retails on lexuspartsdirect for £867.56, including VAT (link). This may be a more trouble-free way of getting the part from within the UK still at some discount to dealer's catalogue.

The PBD unit for RX450h 2013-2015 (68910-48033) seems to be better stocked and can be found for lower price, but the compatibility is a big question: it can be just different colour marking of the wires, but can also be different signal sequencing and different wiring of the socket.

In light of this, I think I am getting a good deal then. I have booked my car in with Lexus to do the PBD with an all inclusive price of £990.

  4. I managed to get into the fuse box today but no idea how to pull out that long blue cover. PBD is fuse number 9 according to the manuals everywhere but is it under the blue strip or somewhere else? I looked at the diagram and not sure how to check if I cant remove the fuse.

I couldnt find a video anywhere on how to take this out either. Took a pic though.

  5. Is it just me or is this issue happening for a lot of people all of a sudden? Its like these power rear door mechanisms all had a day of judgement this week in 2021.

Anyway, I am none the wiser. I don't know what techstream is and I have seen the material from you Herbie, many thanks for that.

I am at a loss currently. If anyone has been able to figure out whats going on, please do share.

All three of those are electrical so if none of them are working it would suggest an electrical problem, maybe a fuse?

You need to do more diagnostic testing now. When you press any of the buttons can you hear a click as though power is getting to the lock/latch assembly but it's mechanically not releasing? If you can't hear any click then it may be that power isn't getting there so you need to test for 12V on the latch/lock/motor assembly connector.

I mean no offence here Ali but are you sure there's a battery in the engine bay? I thought all these cars had the 12V battery under the boot floor and I've never heard of one that has one in the engine bay - even the workshop manuals I have don't show a battery at the front.

I'm off to bed now but will check back tomorrow.

I cannot hear any clicking or motors moving at all. I have tried to listen. No beeps or anything. This is so troubling. I think there is a small latch that allows us to open the boot from inside?

No offence taken, I think i had my old Honda CRV in mind when I said that. I will have another look. I always beleived there were always 2 batteries in the car. I saw one in the boot so I assumed it was a secondary Battery

  7. Hi Herbie

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I highly appreciate it. I found the little switch in the glove box and took a picture. It was in the On position. I turned it on and off a few times, gave it a few taps but no joy. It still does not open.

As you have described that the aux Battery in the boot powers all the electrics in the car just like a normal Battery does. I can report that all other electrics are working fine. I wonder what the bigger Battery in the front engine bay powers now..

Anyway, it is still not working and I am unable to open with the button on the tailgate, the switch on the dash and the key fob. All fail. No beeps either.

I can still unlock the car with the tailgate button though, that is what I find most strange.

Is there anything else I should be checking?

    Much appreciated.

  8. Hi guys

I have just experienced this tonight for the first time after getting in the car after 2 weeks. Obvs lockdown means we dont get to use this too much. My tailgate is not opening with either the tailgate button on the dash, key and even the button above the license plates. Its all a bit strange. There are no beeps either. The button above the rear license plate does unlock the car though, but otherwise its pretty dead, does not do anything at all. I have a bit of an emergency situation now where I have to carry a load for 100 miles and no access to the boot. I could always push the seats down and use the door, but that is less than ideal and will damage the merchandise.

Anyways, long store short. I have just learned from this thread that there is an on/off switch in the glove compartment. Does anyone have a picture of this switch? I cannot find it in mine. I have a 2010 RX450H to give you context.

I have never deal with the aux Battery in the trunk and have no idea on what I need to do to charge it. I am wondering if there are further diagnostics that can be done to validate if the aux Battery indeed is the culprit? Apart from the power tailgate, what other electronics use this aux Battery? Perhaps I could check those as well to see if it is indeed the aux Battery.

A couple of things here for me to investigate with your help.

    1. A picture of this on/off switch in the glove compartment.

    2. What other things use the aux Battery to see if they are still working

Many thanks and appreciate your help guys. Coming here was most useful.

    Ali

  9. Absolutely, thats what I did. Pressed for a few seconds to activate and no joy. I can use i once I manually open the boot.

I will check the soft close again to see if I can fix.

Its definitely a Premiere version but I just cannot find the buttons.

1 - as comments above, plus remember to press and hold the button for a second or two for the function to activate.

2 - it should soft open. When the pollen filter is replaced the soft close mechanism is sometimes disconnected - seems to be an oversight by the dealer.

4 - Yes the SE-L Premier should have ACC/PCS and Head up display. Those are the differences between the SE-L and Premier together with a standard fit sunroof. Are you sure you have a Premier and not just an SE-L?

  10. I have tried that button in glove compartment and it is a standard open and close button. I have tried unlocking first and then opening the boot by pressing for a few seconds, it doesnt open, just beeps. Once I open it manually, I can use the remote again. Its weird.

Thanks, I will check the soft close mechanism again see if I can spot this.

Still cannot locate the PCS button. Also dont seem to have TPMS function in the car. Absolutely positive it is a Premiere version.

    1) Theres a little switch in the glovebox for the power boot, check it out and see if it makes a difference. Also, try the spare fob to see if that works. If not, may need taking to the dealer.

    2) Not paid much notice to it but mine is semi-soft open. Its not too fast and not too slow. Best thing to do is pop into the dealers and check their demo as they all use the same interior bits.

    3) You'll need to activate the rear wiper and turn it off when it gets halfway and is completely vertical. You can buy refills or just change the whole blade, its a standard hook type fitting.

    4) Im not too sure on the exact specifications of the SEL Premier but if it has Adaptive cruise control, it should have the PCS too. To check if you have adaptive cruise control, look for the button on the steering wheel with a wave coming out of the front. The PCS switch off button should be close to the steering wheel, either where the buttons are to the right of the steering wheel, or, if equipped, where the TPMS reset button is which is further down, near the bonnet opening lever

    5) That thud would need checking by a mechanic - sounds like a suspension issue.

  11. Hi guys

I just picked up a used RX450h 2010 Premier. I AM LOVING THIS THING! I managed to do 36 MPG in city driving. I know crazy. I dindt expect it to be that much.

Of course all the bells and whistles of the premier version are just amazing. I have a few questions, I hope you guys can help out.

    1. The power boot is not working with a remote control. I was hoping it would just work when I press the button. It closes with the remote, but doesnt open. I do get it to open it with the remote, but I would need to open it manually first and then I would be able to close and open it back again with the remote. Is that a setting I can change myself or do I have to take it into Lexus?

    2. Is the glove compartment supposed to be soft open? If it is, mine doesnt open up softly. Pressing the button just makes the cover fall hard. May need to get it repaired if ts support to be soft open.

    3. How do I change the wiper blade on the rear? Its hidden under the spoiler. How do I access it?

    4. Are all premier models supposed to have pre-crash protection? I cannot locate the button to turn it off/on. WHere is this located? I followed the locations in the manual but I cannot find it, unless all premier models DONT have it.

    5. I can hear a thud when turning to extreme right. The thud seems to come from the front left wheel. Any ideas what that can be?

May come back with more questions, but I'd really like to get some headway with this stuff first.

    Much appreciated.

  12. I too would like to know what to look out for. I am in the market for one of these. The prices have gone down to a affordable limit for me so I am taking the plunge. I owned an Rx400h before so I am semi aware of some of the things but I would liek to learn from existing owners on what to look out for when getting this. The things listed so far may be personal experiences of people while they owned the car.

Anything that definitely is prone to break with these?

I am looking to spend about 16k on a 2009 model.

    Thanks

  13. Thanks for posting pics. I am particularly interested in seeing how anyone managed to paint the rear calipers. There isnt much to paint, but I would still like to see.

BTW, I am not going to stop there. I want to get some FAT tyres on my next change. Is it possible to use the same rims and get wider tyres fitted? How wide can I go. Anyone have any experience with this?

  14. People, could you please have a think about reduced performance of batteries after a few years of use? How would you identify that the batteries need replacing? The system may not tell you this and the only tell tale may be reduced performance.

I have just had an accident and my car is right now with Lexus for repairs at the body shop. My RX400h is 6 years old. The courtesy car I got was a prius 2011. When the car runs on Battery, I get a lot out of it. Compared to my RX400h, the car can run on Battery for twice as long. Now this may be purely because of the size/weight of the car but at the same time, I believe the Prius is fit with smaller batteries because of the size. So am I right to think that my RX400h now has reduced performance because of the age of the vehicle?

    Anyone else experience this?

  15. I need to get my front brake discs and pads changed as they are worn out and also corroded. Which ones should I go for?

I have quotation from Lexus for £422 including fitting etc.

I have seen some brembo ones on a few sites with reviews. I wanted to see if I could get some performance ones and save some money in the process as well.

    Any recommendations?

Anyone used aftermarket ones they can recommend or should I stick to the genuine ones?

  16. Guys, I have some sweet news. I got the flip key to work!! woop woop. It was really a punt but it worked. It is definitely the length of the blades that make it hard for the transponder coil in the dash to register the key. I got a professional key cutting home service provider to come over and have a look and my keys. Excellent guy I must say. He was willing to experiment with me to see if it would work. I did have the regular type keys to cut as well just in case this didn't work.. BUT IT DID!!!

WHat we did was cut about 3 to 4mm off the blade with a bog standard saw (he didn't have anything else to cut the blade with, they usually don't reduce the size of the blade). After that, he fired up his PC in the van and set up the laser cutter to read the original blade. Once done, we crossed our fingers and let this key cutting concoction to do its thing on the new reduced size blade. 10 seconds later, key was ready with the transponder in tact. Gave it a whirl and PRESTO, BEEP.. READY signal.. Dan takes a bow, I do the chicken.

Here is a comparison of the 2 keys side by side. The one that I got done earlier that didn't work, and the one that did (on the right).

I used autokeysquad.com by the way. The guy's name is Dan who was very helpful and generally a nice guy. Anyways, result. Go for it guys, these things work. I now have a solid key that I am very pleased with. I will be surprised if I manage to break this one. It seems unbreakable.
