  1. Hi all, not sure if it is against the forum rule to post a for sale thread?

I am planning to sell my 2014 RX450H premier in the next one or two months, once my new car (a Model Y) gets delivered.

Before putting it up on autotrader / WBA / MOTORWAY etc, thought I would post here first to see if there are any forum members who might be interested.

    Some further info:

Premier trim with the optional Adaptive Cruise Control, air suspension, black colour, brown semi-aniline leather, fantastic condition, 46k mileage, two owners (including myself),  full Lexus history.

    Additional:

    • Lexus installed towbar with electrics.
    • Rear seat entertainment (integrated into the headrest, fairly old school one that uses DVD, but enough to keep kids happy)
    • Running on cross climate all season tyre.
    • Rubber floor mat and boot mat
    • Front and Rear underrun protection
    • Roof rails
    • Bootsill stainless steel protection

Couple of main reasons spring to mind:

    1. Porsche main dealer customer service was awful (and I mean absolutely terrible).

    2. There was no way that the one year hybrid Cayenne, at around £35k more than the one year old RX450h, was worth that additional money imho. It was an amazing car to drive, and probably. more engaging if the truth be told, but the eye-watering price makes the RX450h look like a complete bargain.

I also think that the stellar reliability associated with Lexus is worth considering. Bills for an out of warranty Cayenne are not going to be cheap.

    Cheers,

    Jonathan

    Thanks for the response Jonathan.

Driving a fully loaded 3rd Rx currently. It has been 5 years so fancy an upgrade. The latest RX comes with android auto which is a big attraction. Also I heard the ride quality is much improved.

For the cayenne I am considering the base model, with 340HP it is plenty powerful enough. Looking at used prices it appears a similarly speced Cayenne (my requirement is quite simple: adaptive cruise control, sunroof, a good seat, good audio are the must haves) at below 3 years old will be about 20 to 25k more than a rx450h f sport.  Partly because adaptive cruise control is a rare option on the cayenne, if one has this option it tends to also come with lots of other options too, whereas on RX the adaptive cruise control is standard. Once the car reach 6 years old and above the price difference starts to narrow.

Annoyingly many basic features on the cayenne are options, for a 60k car to not have auto dimming mirror it is ridiculous.

I always buy extended warranty on my car, even on my current 3rd gen rx. The Porsche will be about 1k per year.

Need to test drive and compare to make up my mind. The lexus will not doubt be more reliable and have great dealers in general, while the Porsche be more fun to drive.

Any other factors that I have missed?

OK, drove the Cayenne. Great car, but we have decided to go down the RX450hl route.

Does anyone know when you have the 3rd row of seats folded flat whether the parcel shelf extends to cover the whole of the boot area? We forgot to check this at the dealer yesterday.

Hi,  although this post is a few months old, I would like to know why you didn't choose the Cayenne in the end? I am in a similar position so would be great to know your point of view. Thanks.

The Cayenne - Love it. Love it. Love it. Truly amazing ownership so far. I know the word is over used but the drive you get with it is 'epic'! It can do the waft along thing with no fuss but if you want to 'make progress' my word can it

I've done 130k on it now and the cost of services and consumables has not been too different to the RX I costed up. So no drama there either.

Space wise...it's certainly got a larger boot area but the interior I would say is about the same.

All in all I've been very, very pleased and will miss it dearly when it goes - not due to issues but now that the Mrs is getting the RX there is no need for two large cars. So the Cayenne will be on sale soon

Thanks, it's interesting to know the space inside is about the same, as the cayenne seems quite a bit wider from outside.

Wouldn't it make more sense to just give the cayenne to your wife :)

Looks like I need to pop in a Porsche dealer for a test drive.

  5. So I went to see an rx450h premier  with cream interior this weekend. It is 13reg with 34k mileage, which seems a bit high to me. Are there any big maintenance item as the car approach 50k miles?  What's consider high mileage when things start to "get loose" for a RX?

Also I was a bit surprised by the amount of crease and light scratches on the leather, especially the driver side which is probably due to getting on and off the car, but it seems the leather isn't very durable.

Overall still quite like the car, so still considering whether should put on an offer.

I just don't know how you guys do it... Admittedly, mine is a pre-facelift model, but I am lucky if I get to 31mpg. I drove from Winchester in Hampshire to West Bay in Dorset yesterday, mainly on single lane A-roads, and managed just under 31 MPG. I usually achieve around 28.5MPG, although I have to say that I... ermm... enjoy the car ;-)

I am getting 18mpg from my bmw 3 series.. looking forword to getting a RX

I have the new 2016 model (2 months now). I have also had numerous premium model v.high spec cars over the years and do stupid miles so I change every 18 months or so. Accordingly I am qualified to comment on RX vs the rest of the market.

This is my first Lexus and I bought the car on looks and styling and the fact that I wanted a totally different form factor. On test drive everything seemed good. However with detailed use I can categorically say that the car is bettered in absolutely every aspect of use by my previous cars. On some aspect it is marginal and others it is significant.

Anyway to get to my point, reviewers drive an enormous number of cars per annum, probably more than any of us. Accordingly they are well placed to nitpick where the cars aren't as good. This Lexus may be a good SUV but trust me if this is typical of the Lexus range they lag behind Jag, Mercedes and BMW ..... Sorry I can't comment on Audi which is where this thread started

i suggest you try and get the Q7 and RX on an extended test (say overnight) and see what you think. Perhaps I should have .....

Hi Rozzalex, thanks for the reply, can you please give more details on areas that the RX leg behind the others? Which are you comparing it with? Note I am not just looking at Q7, very open to other options.

  8. I've been shopping for my next car recently so have been reading reviews on RX450H (latest gen and 3rd gen). And have noticed mostly RX will be ranked below rivals such as Q7, X5 etc in comparison reviews. Take the latest Q7 for example, a recent comparison comparison review on WhatCar has comments like: The controls and build quality of the Q7 is much more solid than RX, which based on my brief visit to the audi showroom (I didn't have time to test drive the Q7) doesn't seem to be the case, as the Q7 I saw seems quite plasticy inside, the whole dashboard is just black plastic, compared to lexus's leather.  The Audi's buttons' and switches are quite nice but I didn't find them any superior to the rx. Then the review also says the Q7 is much quieter than RX at motorway speed, which again I haven't had the chance to test drive on motorway, but given the rx has double-glazed glass I found that surprising.  Am I missing something here? Are there any members here who have actually owned a Q7 and RX and can give your comments?

Or maybe I should take a Q7 for a extended test drive to draw a conclusion myself.

If you go for an X5, stay away from the Xdrive 30D as its too under-powered IMO for such a BIG car.

    30d = 3.0 single turbo diesel

    35d = 3.0 twin turbo diesel

40d = 3.0 twin turbo diesel (different map, injectors etc)

    M50d = 3.0 triple turbo diesel

    I have just got rid of my 2008 3.0sd (which is the pre-facelift 35d)...  it was mapped to 350bhp & 700NM !!!

    PROs

Looks great, plush interior, road presence, surprisingly fast

    CONs

Too big for alot of car parks, heavy - so poor mpg, DPF issues, mega expensive runflat tyres (rears were 325/35/r20 @ £600 for a pair!)

Just my 2peneth tho..  for a buyers guide take a look at www.xdrivers.co.uk

Hi g00se, thanks for the reply. So you have owned both the x5 and RX. How would you compare them for the purpose of a family car? Any little details that makes them growing on you only after owning for a while?  Sometimes it is hard to get a full picture with just s short test drive.  In terms of comfort, and interior space ?

Mileage isn't an issue on these cars. The beige interior isn't hard to keep on top of in terms of leather cleaning. The carpets get dirty really easily though so ask for some rubber ones.

Should be able to get the premier down to £30k too if you want.

X5 is very different.  Ride is harder but it handles better and be aware that it's a much bigger car. Diesel engines are gruff. May be associated with "BMW ******" looks from people

Q7 interior quality is great but the outside is just horrendous. Looks like a pig. Need the 272ps engine for a good balance. The 218ps feels underpowered and is less refined. Has generally rubbish reliability. Had 2 older ones and have 1 new one in the family.

Id say go for the new RX. It's awesome!

Thanks rayaans, so you reckon it is worth going for the premier model compared to luxury?  Is there anything I should watch out for when buying 2nd hand from Lexus?

I already have a BMW 3series, and wanted a "higher" car to ferry my daughter as it is a pain to get her out.  X5 will be more practical due to the larger size but will probably be much more expensive to run. The main attraction of the RX is the reliability.

  11. Hi, I've been considering buying a 2nd RX450h for a while would like like to ask for some options on which one you would go for and why?

    1. 13Reg premier with 22k mileage asking price 32k.
    2. 13Reg F sport with 17k mileage, asking price 30k
    3. 63reg Luxery with 10k mileage, asking price 30k

So the question is whether the mileage makes any big difference (22k compared to 10k, with 10 mileage it is almost like a new car).  Whether the it is worth the extra money (and higher mileage) to go for premier or F sport model? Another thing is the premier has a sun roof which I quite like.

I am considering beige interior for a change, is it very hard to maintain clean compared to black?

P.S. I am also considering X5, or for more money go for the new Q7 or XC90, they are all very different animals, are there any of you who have tried them before, what are your verdicts?

    Thanks very much in advance.
