Okay, I have a 2001 Lexus ES300 (170k miles) that just broke down. Apparently its a transmission issue. They say $2k to do the "soft parts" of the transmission, which includes taking it out and rebuilding it. Then 75% chance of needing to replace the "torque converter for the automatic clutch" ($400) and 50% chance of needing something with the drum ($500). So we're talking $3k for repairs. The mechanic says everything else with the car is in pretty good condition.
Would you all recommend dumping the money into the car? Or dumping it and getting a replacement car? I need a car, so would have to act fast to replace. I also don't have very much money, so its not like I'm going to walk out and buy a new yaris/fit. I'd be looking at a minimal used car. I suppose a 2000 civic with 100k miles can be found for about $5k but is that really putting me in a better position?
That said, I don't want to dump money into this car to have it become even more of a money pit. Any advice? This seems like a lot, but the transmission is huge. Ugh.
If you couldn't tell, this is in the US. Also I know semi-nothing about cars.
