  1. Thanks for your replies in the past I have run a discovery 2 ( big big bills ) a BMW X1 ( horrid car put me off BMW for life and I was always having to defend it to our clients, an XC 70 ( 175000 miles still going strong ) a passat ( why ? ) I was looking at another Xc70 but having run the Murano for a year now I like being high up again.

Comparing the two the Rx 450 is a bit quieter a bit faster more modern and hopefully a hell of a lot more economical as the funding would have to come from the fuel saving on the murano. I currently spend £1000 a month on petrol so I am hoping it will be self funding, I looked at an ML but reliability and image was a problem don't fancy anything else and the more modern Murano is £450 per year to tax so I just don't know

Ex BMW 330i, M5 and M6 owner here. Then an RX300 and now Rx400h, reliability-wise Lexus has been an eye opener. It completely changed what I think is an acceptable rate of breakdowns. To give you a small clue, Neither the RX300 nor the 400h have ever been to the garage outside of scheduled servicing.

  2. Thanks for the replies guys.

to be perfectly honest I am well past it now, just asked out of some masochistic tendency. Like scratching a scabbed wound.

I have ordered a second hand carpet from e-bay, it doesn't look much better to be honest, but has no chemical burns or the damp smell unlike the one in my car. Will be taking it to the local Valet for a good clean, then get him to rip out the old one and install the new.

Should have probably gotten rid straight away but I can be strangely loyal to a vehicle like that. It's done a lot of miles, it is far from fresh looking inside, but it's been great mechanically and I would only sell it once I am ready to buy the rx450h or run it into the ground.

But will avoid Lexus Bradford like the plague from now on.

  3. Yes, that is the thread that prompted me to make this one...

t doesn't explain what the rule is and what it applies to. We aren't talking about a recall here.

You have not made clear what "Rule" is troubling you? There is mention of a "rule" in the recall notice nor in the thread or associated posts etc.

It's in the very thread you have linked me:

    hi all,

mine is also to be recalled. only bought it just over 2 weeks ago. really have mixed feelings about this.

what you guys think? i can return the car as under the 30day/1000 mile rule

i know Lexus are putting right, but its just doesn't feel right if you know what i mean

What I am asking is: What is the 30day/1000 mile rule?

I had not looked at individual posts - it is buried amongst the comments made in response. It refers to a commercial offer made to buyers of second hand cars under the Lexus scheme I believe . In you case the time is well past.

    Indeed.

What I am asking is COULD I have handed it back to them under this rule and SHOULD they have made me aware of this rule when I made the complaint, having been inside this rule at the time of complaint.

  4. I'm guessing here but I think that is probably related to the Sale of Goods Act and you can return the car if unhappy if you've had it for less than 30 days or 1000 miles?

As you bought it over a year ago and second-hand, I would suggest it isn't relevant to you.

Seems unlike a Lexus dealer to be so uncaring about your issue? Have you got a pic of the dodgy carpet?

Aha, so it only applies to brand new cars? I realise it's well past the date now but if it applied to new cars only i am guessing it didn't affect me at any point in time then...

well I have no pictures that were taken at the time, but the carpets are still there and still stinking and still stained. I am sort of over it now anyway, just thinking about it then makes me blood boil though. And yes, given how much everyone raves on about the Lexus customer care, as my only experience with Lexus at the time I rated it worse than BMW park lane, and that is saying something...

  6. Dear All, I've never owned a Lexus before...or a hybrid, but I'm thinking of buying an RX400h...user reviews are pretty good on autotrader and here...and for say 2007 models with reasonable miles, seems like a lot of car for the money Nevertheless, I want to do my homework, so thought I would ask those with ownership experience for some advice. Would therefore really appreciate comments on the following areas:

    • Servicing Costs - seen some comments suggesting around £800 for certain service milestones, but others suggesting around £200 every 12000 miles...?
    • Cam belts - when should they be changed?
    • Tyres costs - have seen comments suggesting £140 each for Hancooks - agree?
    • Any idea on typical insurance premium for a middle aged bloke with 10+ years no claims
    • Tow Bars - although I understand that you can get them fitted for around £500 by local fitter, I understand the advice is to get a Lexus fit due to complex electrics - but that this costs the thick end of a grand?
    • What weight can I tow? some guides say 750kg, others 2 tonnes..
    • Road Tax - is it lower due to "h" factor?
    • Main battery life...have seen threads suggesting that 2 weeks without use will flatten it - true? If so, do they have live 12v sockets with ignition off to attach trickle charger?
    • I live & work in Bristol, so quite a bit of slow urban driving with the odd belt down the motorway - can I expect most urban miles under 30 mph to done on electric power?

Sorry for so many questions but your advice would be gratefully received..

    Thanks in advance

    Stokes

    • Hi, I signed up with Lexus for £30 ish per month. that takes care of all the scheduled services, from cam belt at 100k to spark plugs at 120k. Outside of that, I have yet for it to break down on me (touch wood)
    • haven't had changed the summer tyres yet, but the winter ones are about £100 per corner.
    • 31 and 7-8 NCD, £50 per month insurance.
    • Mine came with a tow bar, I have no use for nor did I pay a premium for it, there must be a few out there you can buy with one fitted?
    • I heard 2 tonne, never seen a reference to 750kg max
    • I have a warped sense of tax costs, can only compare it with a 5litre 10cylinder car I had before, it seems very cheap at £250 ish per year.
    • I think you mean the backup Battery, not the main one (main one being the hybrid HV) I jsut came back from a 2.5 week holiday, had no issues starting the car. the 12V sockets are off when the car is off.
    • My commute is 11miles each way, about 3 miles of crawling traffic, 4 miles of 40-50mph, 4 miles of 20-30mph I average 29mpg now that it has gotten colder and the engine warms up on cold start, regardless if your Battery is full. I expect you to be touching 30mpg simply because your commute is longer. (I do try to hyper MPG, but then ruin it with a racing start one or twice per commute to be in front of someone who is not letting me coast predictably :) )
  7. Is there a quick and easy way to add a trickle charger or a solar battery to top up the main battery?

My daily commute is extremely battery intensive and usually means I have 2 bars remaining by the time I reach the open sky car park, where the car sits while I work.

Adding a solar charger for the 8-10 hours would, i think, see a significant MPG improvement.

I also looked at the Enginer.us kits, they look interesting but only seem to be made for Us sockets.

    Any thoughts on that?

I'm afraid you've got your technologies confused. Solar panels you're thinking about are only designed for 12V batteries - the main Lexus batteries are very high voltage and a solar panel will make minimal impact on them, even if you could work out where to connect it.

I see. Thanks for spotting what the actual question was though.

I did think that it was weird that manufacturers aren't bothering with solar panels in the roof, seemed like a massive oversight.

Well that's a shame. I am really happy with my lexus RX400h, but I wish it had more control/optionality regarding getting more mpg.

It's funny, my last car did 9mpg and I didn't care, with this one I feel like I am playing a game called keep up the MPG, and I hate losing! :)

does anyone know if the RX450h has a Battery only mode? Does it insist on warming up in the morning even if the heater is off? Id it a haigher capacity Battery than the rx400h?

  9. Just saw this in a recall thread, can someone please tell me more about it?

I bought a lexus rx400h from Lexus Bradford jsut over a year ago and questioned the funny smell and wet looking carpets at the time but was assured it was due to a full valet having been done minutes prior to my pick up of the car.

Weeks later I contacted them saying I was not happy with the carpets, which looked to be chemically burned or that possibly someone tried to rectify a previous flooding of the interior and the smell persisted... They didn't want to know. Escalating it to the Lexus HQ did nothing, they just referred me to the ombudsman, at which point I gave up...

Now I am seeing this rule being mentioned in another thread and I feel my ***** starting to boil. Please explain for my peace of mind.

  10. Great! thanks!

what did you install? If there is a dongle that goes in the back that lets me play songs from my Iphone, it would make sense to install it while i am changing the head unit.

  11. got one of these for my car:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/1509-Mounting-recorder-Dashboard-Accident/dp/B004KI3FWI/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1378895764&sr=8-9&keywords=car+recorder

it's not the best in terms of resolution or quality, but a bargain at below £20. You will need to get an SD card with it, class 6 or better.

it records in 15 minute chunks, overriding the oldest chunk when the memory gets full.

The lead is nice and long and I was able to hide mine in the trim, so it sits next to my rear view mirror, out of my way and does the job. Should you have an accident, just be sure to shout out the number plate as it may not have recorded it depending on distance and lighting conditions.

  12. Anyone tried one of these or similar?

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-CPA9-AE-Car-cassette-adaptor/dp/B00007EDLW/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1356283607&sr=1-4

I just tried mine but the castte player just makes a noise then switches back to radio.

I am not sure wether it is the naff adaptor, or the actual stereo since the dealer sold me a car that was way below the standard I would expect from a lexus main dealer. complete with mouldy seatbelts, ruined smelly upholstery etc etc I wouldn't be surprised if the stereo is broken also. Or is there something else that ispreventing this cassette adaptor from working?

The reviews on amazon or all excellent, I was quite excited to get my napster working in my car on the go.

  13. Important update:

Having found some 17inch IS200 rims and purchased some winter tyres at £93 a corner from a frinedly local dealer, I found out that the rear tyres are rubbing on the shock absorbers!

This prompted me to check my own car owner's manual and it had no 17" rims mentioned at all!

So I just ordered some 17" wheel spacers off eBay as I am already commited to the tune of £500. Will have to bite the bullet as far as the insurance is concered.

A really unexpected and sad outcome, but oh well.

Just a warning really, don't be lazy and double check your own owner's manual before splashing out half a grand on a pretty optional upgrade :)

  14. For days now my Battery is charged to the last bar and the engine cuts in even at the smallest acceleration below 10mph. Basically my car is eunning on petrol most of the time and even cuts in to charge my already charged Battery when idling.

This is compolete bollox. I wonder if there is a software upgrade available that will force it to drain the Battery a bit more and not start the engine until it is is half discharged or something?

P.S. messed up the title. Sorry
