  1. I've just sold a Toyota Celica, Japanese import, and for that I had a small unit which fitted into the line from the sender in the gearbox to the speedo head. This had the effect of reducing the number of pulses to the speedo by the ratio of 16/10. I then bought a new dial card for the speedo from a chap on the Celica Club UK site which showed the readings in MPH instead of KPH. The total cost, nine years ago was less than £50.00.

I'm sure that if you enquired on any of the Toyota sites you'd be able to find the information and hardware that you need.

  2. Whilst I can empathise with your problem, I am afraid that I cannot be much help. I am convinced that you and only you can decide what is important to you, and with two such differing cars it's a bit like trying to compare a pet rabbit with a pet dog, both are excellent in their own way, but at the end of the day they are completely different animals.

I chose my RX because I wanted the size, comfort and "waftability", but I can see that a Prius would give reliability at a lower cost, and if cost is an important factor then that could sway the decision. The problem is of course, if you follow that line of thought to it's logical conclusion you would end up with a Smart Car.

Best of luck, but remember that in the end you only have to justify your decision to you.

  3. I have seen several posts on here where people have bought Rx's without the ICE fitted and the dealer has had an aftermarket unit fitted for considerably less that the Lexus price. Have a search on here for ICE and see what you can find. The only reason that I car tell you this is that having bought a Rx400h a couple of months ago I am steadily reading my way through this forum to learn as much as possible about my car and too see what information is out there.

  4. What I did was to get the disc out of my sat nav and go onto Lexus-mapupdates.eu and put in the numbers from your present disc, and the site will tell you what is available, how recent it is, and what it will cost. The reason that I suggested that you had your disc with you is that there are several numbers on my disc and I entered the wrong one until I clicked on the help feature and it showed me the position on the disc of the required number.

Once you have completed the check on Lexus-mapupdates.eu you should have confirmation of your sat nav generation and the part number of the latest available disc.

Having just updated my discs I have a set of 4 2007/2008 discs complete with the manual which would be available very cheap if they were of any interest to anyone, but as mine is a Gen 5 sat nav I suspect that they would not fit yours.

    Cheers

    Roger.

  5. Its worth noting that although the discs may be the latest version, they could be up to 3 years old. Therefore, the maps may not have roads on it made in 2012. My car is a 2012 running the 2012 disc but it doesn't pick up my house which was completed in 2010

This is the problem with any sat nav that is updated by discs rather that over the internet. Firstly the map supplier has to notice that there is a change to the road, then the maps have to be redrawn, this data is then sent to the sat nav supplier and finally after testing to make sure that there is no conflict the new maps are incorporated on the new discs.

The only way to get fairly recent information is to use a dedicated sat nav supplier such as TomTom or Garmin who updates over the internet as soon as they have the information from the map maker, or to use something like Google maps on a 'phone or tablet.

The point that I was trying to make was that considering the price of new sat nav discs I would rather pay the extra and get the most up to date information that was available. The discs that were in my sat nav were dated 2007 so they they probably had roads built in 2004/5 and nothing later.

I am absolutely over the moon with my latest purchase, my Rx400h, so at the moment I want to treat it to the best, I know, Daft ain't I.

    Cheers.

  6. Thanks for the thought Dan, but I purchased a full set of discs because I wanted a full set of discs. I did look on the "Bay" but I didn't see any full sets of 4 discs, neither did I see any 2015/2016 discs and if I'm going to buy new discs I want the latest, in my opinion it is much better to pay full price for the latest available than to waste half that amount for outdated discs.

    Cheers

    Roger.

  7. Having recently purchased a 2008 RX400h with the sat nav disc of 2007/2008, I decided to update. Following information on this forum I got a quote from my local Lexus Main Dealer, and then got a quote from Lexus mapupdates.eu and found that their price was the best.

When ordering from their web-site it was showing a delivery of up to 32 days, but when I received the order confirmation it showed a delivery date of 05/08/2015, which I calculated to be 44 days. I decided that this was just too long as I wouldn't have the update for most of my trips out during the summer, so I cancelled the order on the evening of the 22nd. The site said that I would have a confirmation within seven days and I was surprised to have an e-mail from them on Tuesday morning 23rd. asking if I still wanted to cancel my order as the goods were being picked that day and would be despatched that evening.

I agreed to accept the order as long as they kept to that schedule, and low and behold the discs arrived late this afternoon.

I have posted this as information for other forum members who might be considering an update.

Obviously I haven't tested the disc yet, but to me it shows that if you don't ask you don't get.

    Cheers

  8. Yesterday morning I was walking downstairs, I'd just got up, when the car alarm went off, RX400h. When I opened the front door I found all four windows open, and the moonroof open, the doors locked and the alarm waking my neighbours. As soon as I pressed "unlock" on the key-fob the doors unlocked and the noise stopped.

I then pressed and held "lock" the doors locked and the windows and moonroof closed. This problem has not repeated itself since. My first thought was that the key button to unlock the car had been pressed somehow in my pocket while I had been walking downstairs, but that would have unlocked the doors and switched off the alarm before it opened the windows and moonroof.

Could anyone please help with any ideas as to the cause of this, as obviously I'm a bit concerned about leaving the car anywhere as the likelihood of either the contents or even the car disappearing worries me.

I have only had the car for about a month and I just don't know enough about it yet to diagnose problems without help.

    Regards

    Roger.

  9. I joined a couple of weeks ago, to get as much information from users about the RX400h as I could. I had seen a car that I liked in the local Lexus dealer, but never having driven a hybrid I was not sure what to expect. I was changing from a Jaguar XK Diesel, which was great on comfort and fuel economy, but having retired I was expecting, due to reduced mileage during the winter months, to have problems with the DPF.

The main requirement was the comfort and performance of the Jaguar, but with the advantage of 4X4 and SUV driving position.

Having read many posts on the RX forum I came to the conclusion that if I liked the car when I went for a test drive it should suit my lifestyle perfectly. Well I was very impressed with the car when I drove it and left a deposit. I collected the car two weeks ago, and decided to have a week in Devon as a test trip. On the journey down I managed 27.4mpg over 220 miles, which I thought was acceptable but not great, I read more comments on the forum and worked out how to use the cruise control from the manual, and achieved 32.8mpg on the return journey.

Having proved to myself that driving a hybrid properly has a great bearing on efficiency, I look forward to learning more as I go along.

    All the best.

    Roger.
