  1. I enjoy a bit of slip though - getting any in the IS is a chore in itself - got a bit too much traction and traction control cuts in even when completely off. Its been fine in winter without any winter tyres - not so in the previous Merc which would benefit greatly from winter tyres.
I love giving the RX some in snow with traction control off - the OEM bridgestones are rubbish but they're OK at low temperatures - just need warming up a bit first.
Really like the MK5 Golf at low temperatures though, spins the front wheels everywhere in 1st gear - its a hoot!
Im not entirely sure that winter tyres would make much difference to my driving in good conditions below 7 degrees. It barely gets under that temperature anyway, recently its been about 5-6 degrees but its usually bang on 7 or above on most days around here.
I did run M+S tyres on the previous RX which were good all year round but can't seem to get any in the 4RX size.
Well I have winters put on my F-sport wheels every winter since having it 2 years ago & after having other rear wheel drive cars in the winter would not be without them.
We do not get many days of bad snow & ice but we do get many days where the temperature is low enough to justify the.
This is a link to my clip of driving straight down my drive & back up in deep snow to allow a visitor tracks to drive in

  2. 65mike I've started another thread on here which you may well have seen called IS winter wheels. I have an F sport running 18 inch wheels but have purchased a second set of 16 inch for winter, great in the Snow. The winter wheels are 205/55/16 I'm running good year ultra grip 9, amazing tyres
Have you got them set up with tpms sensors as a second set?

  3. Hi all.
This is good news indeed did you use the winter button on the dashboard and have you got winter tyres on the is300h.:wink3:
    65mike
Yes did also make use of the snowflake button, think it just reduced throttle sensitivity, but it all helps, have always switched to winter tyres when I started driving rear wheel drive saloons again.

  4. First chance I have had to properly try out my 390H Fsport in deep snow & I have been surprised to find it performed flawlessly.

Was expecting to have to dig out my drive but decided to give it a go & it was fine, just noisy as the snow was being compacted.

Worked well even on a slope, makes a big difference & is still a good benifit in sub 7 degree temperatures.

  5. What is it with Lexus paints, it's so brittle and soft. Only 6 weeks and 1500 miles into the ownership of the new IS, I have suffered 7 chips on the paintwork already.

2 on the bonnet, 2 on the bumper and 3 on the front wing, door and mirror( I think hit by the same stone). Seems like the car will automatically get new chips every time it's being driven.

Really breaks my heart especially I've put in so much effort and time washing, cleaning the car. Makes me want to give up and just whack it through the local £5 car wash.

hey there's another thread about crap Lexus paint finish somewhere ....................  they have dumbed down I'm sure.

My original paintwork is quite brilliant with very few stone chips and on 194k miles and 22 years   ...  the black windshield trims and wiper arms are silvered, chipped a fair bit though and that annoys me too.

My bro-in-law with a brand new RC had those black trims chipped after just a few days.

    Malc

So paint quality is all about hardness is it?! :wallbash:

There's nothing wrong with the quality of the paint, in fact the paint is probably some of the highest quality paint you can get at the moment.

Different manufacturers use different paint hardness, Lexus typically use soft - so do manufacturers such as Aston Martin, Ferrari and some Porsche models.

Since lead has been removed from paint, its been softened significantly but as I say, nothing to do with the quality, just a feature.

Any car will get stone chips - its stupid to think it won't, additionally if the car is low, itll get many more! I still see BMWs with huge chunks of road rash on the front with only 10k miles on them. All depends on the roads you drive on, how close you are to the car in front etc

Think about it - a rock travelling at 10mph hitting a car going at 30mph - its going to chip, no ifs and certainly no buts!

Hi its nothing to do with the loss of lead! It is since all paints are now water based & not cellulose based, solvent based to you.

All car paints are now water based & it is that alone that has caused all cars to be affected by stone chipping.

  6. Hi All,

will be picking up my new ultra blue f sport on Monday and thought I would thank everyone for the posts and topics I have read over the past 3 months.

i was looking at the usual BMW, Audi, Merc but having read through the forums decided the Lexus was for me

i must say Lexus Wolverhampton have been a pleasure to deal with and cannot wait to get the keys Monday night

    cheers all

Congratulations, bought my 300h Fsport from the same dealership after parting with Jaguar.

I hope you enjoy yours as much as I have.

    Great choice!

  7. Dont really see the need for dash cams  - they're abused more than they are used correctly.

Have you seen all the youtube videos with titles like "Dashcam stories: idiot drivers" and the like?

Legally you have to put CCTV signs on your property if it looks onto the road which is council owned, therefore, don't see why cars with dash cams shouldnt have "dashcam on board" warnings as theres some right idiots out there who shouldn't have the privelege of recording everything that goes on on the roads.

And if you have one, you have to show your insurance company the footage even if you were at fault! Some insurance companies will hike the price a little bit as its seen as a "stealable item" especially because they arent exactly cheap.

    [/quote

I think you will find that only applies to commercial premises, there is now such requirement as long as the camera is not pointing into your neighbour's property or garden.

I have had a car roll back into my car at traffic lights at night with the deliberate intent to claim I drove into them.

Without my dashcam evidence it would have been hard to prove, as it was the police acted on the evidence I produced & the driver was charged.

  8. Why did you think that your mpg would improve in the cold?

I expected mine to get worse which it has.

It seems to me that short journeys from cold and hills make getting over 40mpg tricky.

My new IS has only covered 400 miles and so far my best is 45mpg.

However, as I live on an island which is fairly hilly, I reckon that's not bad.

I think he meant fuel consumption would increase

Still on 32mpg here. My RX does the same atm

That was what I said, fuel consumption increase in the winter ( this means get less miles per gallon) I was getting 40 -50 mpg in November last year.

  9. Water jetting damages the ceramic core, there are companies that are licenced to clean them & correctly dispose of the ash.

Dpf's work very well, it's just a shame that cars with them are effectively miss sold to customers who will never drive the car in a manor suitable to allowing it to work correctly.

My diesel had done 116000 mile when I sold it & the Dpf still had plenty of life left in it.

But if the exhaust gases do not get hot enough in use they will slowly clog up.

My work place changed so I was no longer doing the milage so I changed to a petrol engine which is better suited to shorter journeys.

  10. The 17" wheels on my 51 registered GS300 are presentable but I, also, have trouble keeping tyre pressure (35psi) up to the mark on 2 of the wheels. The tyres have been removed and fixative replaced but the problem persists. Can you advise, please, if refurbishing and powder coating would be likely to cure the loss of pressure? The Avon tyres were fitted new in May 2015 and have done under 5000 miles.

It is possible that if the rim bead area has become corroded it could allow some air loss.

But a decent tyre company should be able to spot this & advise on a solution.

  11. Yes David, had my wife keeping lookout, at least at this all cars remain under cover until I finish the wheel refurb.

Should be spraying the finish colour black tomorrow.

Bought them to put on my IS 300h Fsport as winter wheels, but had winter tyres fitted to existing rims instead.

So wheels needed a light refurb & were painted in a really bad gold finish, so bought them cheaply even though they are Lexus wheels.

See your message box re this thread.

  12. Neilj, you were on the wrong Jaguar forum, you should have joined jaginfo, which was much more about helping each other out.

I have stayed on it & have still attended meetings in my IS 300h Fsport as the forum is as much about the members as the cars.

  13. Tesco Unleaded Momentum is 99 Ron but does not pretend to clean your engine, only Shell offer a 99Ron alternative.

Always us Tesco Momentum in my Roadster as it is designed to run on 97 Ron upwards.

Not sure what people's engineering backgrounds are on here or how many realise that all engines in modern cars are designed to burn fuel cleanly!

So the need for additional so called clean fuels with cleaning additives with is not really going to benefit.

There is always some people who are taken in by the marvelous marketing to sell the supposing top fuels with all the snake oil additives.

If they were so good & required by your car it would be listed as the preferred fuel to use in the hand book to maintain your engine in peak Condition.

But surprise surprise it does not.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but please do your homework before you get suckered in!

  14. Update, tried with my wife's phone & had same solution.

Had a few mins free today, so removed interior light unit & tried the wiggle test on both connection plugs.

Successfully found which plug was not connecting & made very small adjustments to the male pins, re-connected & tested with full phone access.

Re-fitted light unit to roof & confirmed all functions of lights & phone connection & made call to prove functions.

Not sure why plug to sockrt connection failed, but have seen this before on other equipment, hard part is locating affected socket & then the actual pin.
