I swapped my IS 300h for a NX300H. The USB is greyed out on the available media screen on the NX but It played and was readily accessible on the IS.

The stick works fine on my computer.  Any ideas??

It's odd that it worked on an IS but not a facelift NX. Does any other stick get recognised in the car? You have two sockets in that gen of NX I think in the centre console, both of which should support data. Have you tried both sockets?

How large is the stick? I believe an MM17 or MM19 (if you have car play or android auto) should support 128GB minimum, but must be formatted FAT32.

I'm hesitant to say, because it's easy to blame the car, but as the same stick worked in an IS300h (with probably MM13?) perhaps the USB ports in the NX are broken because MM17/19 should be able to read anything that MM13 can read.

Please check these things and let us know.

Dealer could not find anything obvious wrong and I couldn’t break it when I was there.  Seems to be after 5-10 mins of driving
However I noticed today when it dropped out twice it was at the same time I had audible alerts from the car for getting to close to left side of road.  I have found a couple of RX posts regarding this with the same symptoms and suggest turning off audible warnings but I cannot see that they are enabled as audible just the warning.

i have a S24 Android so wondered if anyone else had this problem.   I have in the meantime removed the phone from car and vice versa and set up again

I remember reading something else on here that there was indeed some conflict between android auto and the some notifications.  So I guess that is the problem, not the wiring.

is there a unique reason for using a Lexus map?  My experience  using it is not good. Its not 100% reliable and fails to reroute properly around roadworks offering unnecessarily lengthy detours. By the time a Lexus update reaches an owner its way outdated. Google /Waze is constantly updated.

As always the Lexus electronic display and features are poor despite being supplied by Panasonic

In my case map updates are still free (that may be the last one that is though) so no point in not updating it.  It also integrates with the HUD (which on my vehicle AA and ACP do not). You are correct that on MM19 systems the map data is 6 months old when released.

So ... in Europe, it seems you can't do a MM software update on your lexus (NX300h) yourself, you have to get a Garage to do it.  In the USA, you can just download the update on a USB and plug it in yourself.

I've asked my garage (who is also the Lesus dealer) to do it, and they've come back and said, that I have to buy the Map Update before they can do the MM software update.

Does that sound right to anyone?  I've never read this anywhere else?

You should be able to download the updates from Lexus Tech and do it yourself.

    https://www.lexus-tech.eu/

Just beware that if it goes wrong, it may cost you a new multimedia unit.... (if it goes wrong with the dealer doing it then it would be up to them to put it right)

Lexus is now the most stolen car brand (as a percentage of cars on the road).

Toyota cars have a similar issue, and non-PHEV RAV4s are apparently vulnerable too (unlike the 2022+ NXs).

Interesting that all the user comments and Lexus replies from that Lexus magazine web page have gone missing!

There are also a couple small chips right on the screen! i can't imagine what would possess someone to damage the screen that way considering it's not even touch screen. Fortunately this damage isn't really visibile unless it's in direct sunlight, and for the moment 80% of my drives are after sunset.

I tried polishing the gear selector indicator as it was lightly scuffed but that didn't work and may've made the situation worse, unwilling to back down i also tried polishing the screen behind the drive mode selector in case it came out rubbish and lo and behold... it was. Seems polishing will likely ruin the antiglare and keep the scratches anyway. If i ever end up going to a professional i'll ask for a hail mary but in the mean time it's whatever.

Unfortunately this looks like scratches rather than the coating lifting off.

Not sure if you can get a new plastic cover? (Issue is it may only be sold with the screen as one part).

  7. Our NX screen coating was gradually damaged when the car was valeted (I no longer let anyone else clean the interior of our cars other then the dealer vacuum at servicing).  By the time I realised it was happening it was too late (it started lifting at the edges).  The anti glare is very susceptible to common interior car cleaning materials.  I believe there was an admitted fault on some IS screens but that may have only been in the USA.  When it happened on our NX I complained and got nowhere.  So I just went to the valeter, asked what he used, bought some myself and used that on a micro fibre cloth to remove the rest of the coating.  Took a while but it all came off.  And once it was completely removed I could not notice a difference between when the coating was undamaged versus completely removed.

As long as the underlying screen surface is not damaged you should be ok.  IIRC the product was Frogchem silicone gloss.  Hope that helps.

    Cheers,

  8. You will probably have an MM17 version of the multimedia system in that vehicle which should be able to do at least a 128GB stick when formatted fat32.  As Adrian says, check it really is FAT32 - modern versions of windows won't format fat32 natively and you need a third party application to make a fat32 filesystem on large sticks.

There are also restrictions to number of directories and max file limit but I would guess unless you have 10s of GB of music loaded already you won't be anywhere near that.

Sorry but it shouldn’t be a surprise at all… as noted in the Lexus statement, and as others have shared in this thread, only the RX has a protection plate currently. A solution for other models is being communicated to dealers at the end of April (although it seems the statement now reads “coming weeks”)… https://mag.lexus.co.uk/lexus-uk-statement-on-vehicle-theft/?fbclid=IwAR2u1DC_0mAo4_kSpK_1FLViLNyHJq0nAKctwfXCMxQi1CwuNiGBA10yY0w_aem_ATXzc0mSafM1xX72JZyfSo-7KpoTKXtkPQjmf6ToRhjQ_4GsDaGMH6Nf5ACoFWEW2pE

I know it’s not great having a vulnerable car, but Lexus was rather clear a solution wasn’t yet available.

I had also noticed that April had changed to "coming weeks".  A bit of a worry.

I'm not certain on this, but my 2020 RC system only accepted a 32gb stick when updating the nav.system..I guess the same will apply to audio.

Interesting.  My only two data points are that 128GB works on a 2015 NX and a 2021 RX.  Never tried in an RC.

I know the MM21 system in the new cars has an upper limit of 32GB (progress?), but MM13/15/17/19 should do more.  All need to be FAT32 though.

David - is it possible you had a 32GB stick formatted as FAT32, but larger ones with something else?

Afternoon all, I've a 2017 (67) LC500 which I'm struggling to get any of my USB drives working with.

I've tried a 256GB (exfat formatted) the light comes on briefly to show it has power, but doesn't show up as an option on the media selection screen.

I've also had no joy with a 64GB (ntfs formatted) 128GB (exfat formatted) Same thing happened.

Doesn't appear to be anything in the manual about this, the same sticks work fine in my other car, I must be doing something daft here, what works for you guys?

Our 2015 NX will play 128GB formatted with fat32.  I suspect it's the filesystem type that is preventing it playing.

Modern versions of windows can't format fat32 in large filesystems so you need a third party program.

There is a new plate for the RX. I wonder if it fits the ES too, or will they be expecting you to turn up in an RX.

Colin,  I am not sure about this.  I think the official word on this from Lexus is somewhat ambiguous - it talks about 1 iteration, which I assume to mean only 1 version of the plate has been created.  It's in the comments section.

I have a 2020 RX 450h. I have the wifi on and a subscription with AT&T. Often, when I turn on the car, the wifi does not start and I have to go through the process of connecting to the provider. Is there a fix for this problem? So far, the dealer doesn't have any answers.

Let me guess... You are using an Iphone as the hotspot?

I think you might find that the enhanced plates are not at all enhanced. People without all the facts say some total bs.

What probably happened is the original plates were prototype and the final plate design differed a bit. Lexus were experimenting at the beginning.

We all knew the plates were a stop gap. I think I might look into adding some additional protection for the wiring loom.

A firmware update will never happen. It's far too difficult and expensive to roll out because for every 100 successful flashes, one car will fail and the boxes will be dead. That will cost £££ to put right.

A preliminary firmware fix as previously discussed by a security researcher would only be a stop gap also, because the thieves will eventually obtain a work around. Only fully encrypted units will work and our cars hardware do not have the processing chips to handle encryption. Therefore a permanent solution cannot exist ever.

Get a scorpion or similar chip. Have a steering wheel lock. And hope for the best. The 4RX is a dead car. Trade in for a 5RX or another brand not affected by this exploit.

    No point demanding the impossible.

I agree about the plates - The original plates were a copy of those used to prevent car jacking in South Africa.  If there is some enhancement perhaps it's thicker gauge steel in another manufacturing run?

I'm not totally convinced that encryption can't be added in software for at least few critical commands (such as "correct key present"). To me the idea of trading in a 4RX for a 5RX sounds like a triumph of hope over experience!

Hello Ed, I think the value of all luxury vehicle's has taken a kicking recently. The only survivors that show price increase, are the small 1.0 litre fart boxes, with low insurance and tax.

I reckon if you own an RX Mk 4,  or any previous models, it has become a keep it or take a kicking. Personally I will probably keep mine, as the final balloon payment I will have to make in 2026, is such that if I hand the car back, I certainly couldn’t buy an upmarket luxury car.
Yes, I could buy a brand spanner’s MG, Peugeot, Renault, Citroen etc, and I have nothing against any of those vehicles……but they ain’t a Lexus!
So I’ll stick for the moment with my RX and it’s 10 year warranty, that way, values don’t apply 🤔

Pete - I agree with you, but it will depend on what the insurance does.  If insurance rises even more to say 3k per year, you can take quite a kicking on the trade in and still come out on top....

You know you will need insurance cover immediately so to get the vehicle home why don't you ask them to initiate the 3 day drive home cover Lexus and Toyota dealers offer.   That way you can try and secure cover in the short term while the car is garaged or on your drive.

I have heard from dealers that Lexus Insurance are now often turning down the "complimentary" 3 day cover, so the owners has to arrange cover themselves before driving away.  Not sure if this applies to LBX, but I heard it is happening even on new NX450h+ for instance.

Okay back from Lexus Woodford, car had a disconnected headlamp (unsurprisingly) looks like they just smashed their way through the plate (I forgot to get a photo) and cut the wires to the headlamp.

The nice guys managed to fix up the wiring loom and fitted a new protection plate free of charge. There was a slight worry we might need a new wiring loom / headlamp assembly but I got a phone call with the good news that the wiring was fixable before I even got moving on the Tube back to my office, sat around in reception checking emails and chat all in took a couple of hours, total cost 160 GBP.

So could have been worse, now I just need to wait see if the thieves come back for another go.

If they are now at the stage of cutting the wiring loom to gain access they would not even need to smash the plate. The plate only covers the connector area, not the entire loom.  This was only a matter of time.

The plate should have bought enough time to engineer a software fix.... But here we are still discussing the lack of solution...

Thank you to those who replied to my question about the 'protection' plate(s).

The plates have been installed by the Lexus dealer.   I also have a Stop Lock Pro Elite taking up space in my top of the range RX450h, no doubt offering opportunities for damage to the interior over time.  In essence, I have two sticking plasters that offer nothing, other than delay and minor inconvenience to would-be car thieves.

Lexus Customer Relations advise it has taken seven years for thieves to discover the opportunity to steal Generation 4 cars in seconds.  Apparently senior management are aware of the '... shocking impact on customers, insurance companies and Lexus'.  Clearly, customers will pay the price for the theft of their Lexus cars and the increase in insurance costs.  What impact the issue will have on sales of new Lexus vehicles and second-hand values will remain to be seen?  I anticipate this is the sole issue that will provoke any further action from Lexus/Toyota.

However, the Generation 5 RX is manufactured to a different global architecture so they will not be targeted in the same way.  So that's all right then ... .

As a fellow 4RX owner I feel your pain. You may have seen on another thread that one of the sticking plasters is unfortunately starting to peel off: there was a report of a vehicle with the plate fitted being stolen... I have already sent that info to customer relations.

If they want to be specific about the gen 4 RX, it has not taken 7 years. The vehicle was being delivered to the the UK in early 2016 I believe.  The first CAN theft I can find on the web is February 2021 in Japan. That's 5 years.

Second hand values have dropped significantly on 4 RX in the last 12 months unfortunately.

I think it must be the sat nav.

Older models like the Gen 4 only use the camera I believe, hence you get 120 etc as that's often a sticker on the back of a truck.

The facelift MK4 certainly uses a combination of sat nav data and speed limit signs.  When I pull off the drive onto the street it has not seen a speed limit sign but it does know the limit is 30mph. Not sure about the pre facelift MK4.

However, I believe there is a TSB for a software update to prevent the camera recognising signs on trucks as speed limit signs.  (I saw that on Lexus Tech at some point... Perhaps check with the dealer).
