Look for the scale type of rust.

It may all look rusty but brown dusty is ok, it is when it starts to layer and especially if you can dislodge some of it by hand.

brake pipes usually go rusty first especially at bends or unions where the metal was worked/fatigued during fabrication.

if you can leave traces on the ground from dislodging it probably best to leave it to a brave idiot to buy.

I have spent many hours under rusty cars welding or making repairs, nowadays there are plenty that are not rusty for the same price.

I recently went to buy a 2017 RX450h, a Glasgow car already decomposing with rust at rear suspension mounts.

Instead I paid £1000 less for a ‘clean’ example

    2017!!!😦

  2. Hi all,

As I mentioned in a previous post, I am about to purchase a 2009 RX400h with 128000 on the clock, but I have been reading many posts about the rear subframe issue past a certain mileage.

I did have this problem on my Rx300 as well as heavily corroded rear brake plates which could have failed the MOT.

Is this an inevitable problem on these cars? How can you tell the condition of the subframe?

Many thanks for your input on this.

    Hi,

Thanks for this. I had seen this discussion before, and it does seem to suggest that the car is belt driven, but I can't manage to get a definite answer. I guess what I need is someone who has a 400h of the same year to tell me for definite.

The current owner who had it for 3 years hadn't even heard of timing belt replacement, but checked in his service booklet for me and saw that the "belt inspection" item of the service list had been crossed for "chain"...hence my confusion.

  4. Hi all,

I am new to this forum, not quite new to Lexus. I used to own a 2004 RX300 which I kept 7 years, drove 120k miles with it and sold at 180k miles. I replaced it with a Mercedes R class, which was a costly mistake! Consequently, I am about to purchase a 2009 RX400h with 128000 on the clock, but I can't figure out (nor the current owner!) if it is chain or belt driven. I know that earlier models have a belt, but did Lexus equip later models with a chain?

Many thanks for your expert input on this.
