I am surprised that it plays exFAT, as I always used (and thought it necessary to use) FAT32.... but John seems to have made exFAT work, as do you, so, I've learned something!

In folder view, what you are seeing is the expected behaviour (even if it is not what you might consider logical).  Only directories that contain music files are listed....  So a directory that only has subdirectories (artist->albums in your case), will only list the album folders.  This is as designed (we can debate the logic of the design of course).

I organise my music in top level directories by genre, then artist, then album.  Only the album folders are listed in the folder view.

However, the system is more designed to use mp3 tags rather than folder structures.  The system will scan the folders and build an index based on mp3 tags, so that you can search by album, artist, genre, song title etc, and these have nothing to do with filename or folder name or hierarchy... you could, I believe, dump all your files on the root (subject to the limit on max number of files per folder) and as long as the mp3 ID3 tags are all done correctly, the system would catalogue them for you into albums etc.

It takes a bit of getting used to but I actually think this is sensible behaviour - you just have to work this way rather than fighting against it.

The difficulty arises in that whilst all of this is done on mp3 tags, the order in which tracks are played is not determined by the ID3 tag for track number, but instead by an alphabetical sort of track names in the ID3 tag.  This is questionable behaviour at best, but according to Lexus is "how it was designed".  This means you need to label your tracks as "01 track name 1", "02 track name 2" etc etc.  There are automated tools for doing this.

    Hope that helps.

Many thanks for the clarification.  I tried another stick which was formatted as Fat32 but with the same result.

Lexus being too clever on this occasion that they have rendered that function virtually unusable if it has more than a handful of albums. I had my entire library at 30gb on the first stick. The tags are all done but iTunes and windows Groove player regularly ***** up the tags and windows sometimes loses the properties when copying to a fat32.

I suspect ntfs might work as well but I  not tried it  yet but an older merc I had would accept ntfs so may be lexus might have updated that since fat32 has some problematic limitations.

On another note the Sat nav today was telling me porky pies today all the way home.  Apparently I was about 4 miles away from where I actually was at any given point and the sat nav still thinks it is not parked on my driveway but about 4 miles away!

  2. Hello!

Can anyone explain how the audio system works from a  USB stick.  I have copied my iTunes library which is just folders sorted by artist names with subfolders for albums.  When accessing the usb stick and using the folders option in the car it refuses to show the artist folder but simply lists the album folders as one great big list which makes navigating to the album very frustrating.

The usb stick has had ample time to be read.

The usb stick is formatted as exFAT.

Any ideas how to fix this as I have never come across this with any other vehicle.

  3. Hi

You won't get certain features with the IS such as car play/android auto and a touchscreen. The infotainment track pad will take some getting used to.

I believe all of the 2022 onwards ES's have a touch screen as well as the track pad which makes life a lot easier if you aren't used to the track pad (I'm not).

I think the newer ES's all come with the 12in display,  the earlier ES's don't have a touch screen and the standard  infotainment screen is smaller except on the Takumis.

I am a new owner having picked up an ES less than a week ago. I have the Takumi model.

So far the fuel consumption was an average 54 mpg on motorway (200 mile journey) but its dropped to an to an average of 52mpg as I have been driving around town exclusively since

Hello Daniel and welcome to Lexus ownership and the best Lexus forum there is. I take it your ES is your first hybrid car. Am I correct your previous car was an automatic? Why I ask is because of your statement saying its noisy when you floor it. Wasn't your previous car noisy when you floored that? From what I've read the ES suppresses noise exceptionally well.

As John said above. Enjoy your car. Don't compare it to another totally different type of car. You have Takumi spec so you've got the very top of the range so enjoy the Mark Levinson sound system. Turn it up a bit and you'll not hear the engine when you floor it.

    Hi Mr Vlad

The noise doesn't bother me, I'm not comparing. There are no surprises I researched thoroughly before buying.

I was simply confirming what numerous car journos have said about how loud it is when flooring it. That being the only valid criticism levelled at the car in my view.

The remainder of the criticisms by the press of the ES are in my opinion driven by an all too common unjustified subconscious bias in favour of the german brands.

If the ES came with a German badge on it the track pad wouldn't get panned instead it would be more likley be described as something along the lines "works efficiently but clearly designed with the finger swiping tinder generation in mind" or some similar comedic description!

  5. I had a tracker installed in JLR vehicle a few years back. The tracker came with a fob which you had to have with you otherwise it would not start. They took a significant part if the vechile apart to install the kit which was.wired into the ignition.

I would mention that the tracker centre were able to by pass the fob remotely on one occasion when the Battery ran low  and prevented me formsyarting the vehicles.   So how effective a secondary security device would be is questionable.

The reality is that if somebody really wants to nick your car then they will regardless of what measures you have installed.

Just check that it's approved by your insurers  and it doesn't void the Lexus warranty before committing to anything.

  6. Hello

New member and first time Lexus owner.  I had quick read of the new members section and it appears some members are interested in hearing the reasoning for buying a Lexus.  So why did I buy a Lexus ?    Alan Partridge said it was a Japanese Mercedes-just kidding.

After a lot of umming and ahhing over things like handling, running costs, quality and things not breaking or randomly stopping working and the poor dealership service received from some of the popular exec market brands in recent years logic just kept bringing me back to Lexus.

The ES drive is quite good for what it is (ie a hybrid) and yes it does get a bit noisy when you floor it.  Apart from that the rest is simply magnificent.

On the subject of handling, review after review goes on about how the germans handle so much better, well actually the stock models most people buy in the same price range as the ES in my experience don't handle significantly better.  Those models aren't things you would take on a track day unless you fancy understeering onto the run off

To me personally  the 520d I drove as courtesy felt like a gutless shopping trolley but that only reflects that  my own daily vehicle that I was used to driving was much much quicker, had responsive and accurate steering, less body roll and much sharper brakes than the 520d. Obviously my perception of the 520d was very much tainted by driving around in a much superior  performing vehicle. That doesn't make the 520d a bad car.

Why did I buy an ES?  It was the only saloon on offer by Lexus other than the LS.  Its well specced comfortable and economical to run and its a hybrid which is just my attempt at hedging my bets against more  stringent ULEZ laws in the cropping up in all sorts of places.  I was after the new IS but that isnt coming to the UK sadly so it was the ES.  I started looking at an F Sport but ended up with a Takumi.

The other car I drive is a full electric but you do need to be organised with journey planning.  Recently on a long journey I decided not to take the electric solely because the supercharger on route is inside large a shopping centre which would have entailed queuing for 30 mins or so in the Christmas rush just to get to the supercharger.  That would have added a 2-3 hours to my journey (there and back and charging times) so  another full electric vehicle  was not in consideration.
