  1. Couldn't agree more. Tried to get some tech advice from Lexus Poole initially, was put through to service department, who were busy and said they'd get back to me, they never did. So I tried Bristol and then Exeter, on each and every occasion (3) I tried them, each time was told they were busy and they would get back to me later on in the day, neither of them did, chased them up on three further occasions, and again, not a single reply. Tried Poole and same story. Emailed each dealership via the contact form and have had nothing back from any of them, but the generic 'we've received your email' reply. In the end contacted CSG Motor Co in Buckinghamshire, a second hand Toyota/Lexus dealer and they furnished me with the relevant information on the first phone call.

  2. I should add as well, I'm a proponent of using good a quality engine and TBE flush and fuel conditioner. I've used Archoil D6400 as a flush for years, and either use Archoil D6900 or Oilsyn Diesel Power as a conditioner. There's alot of cheap rubbish out there, but the top end products, of which there are a very few, are absolutely worth investing in. Every mechanic I've ever used has been shocked at how clean the top end components (EGR, injectors etc) of all my cars have been, and I can only put it down to the additives. Not only that, you'll get a smoother, quieter running engine, and usually an uplift in mpg of 3-5%, be wary of interpreting statements on these products such as 'restores performance' thinking it will transform you car, it doesn't add power, it will just help bring your car back to how it should and/or help maintain it.

Most of IS220d issues are caused by people not using them correctly (same as most other diesels), diesels are just not meant to be used on short journeys in the cities. How majority of people are using cars? For short journeys in the cities! That causes all the usual issues - DPF, EGR, Injectors, Turbo etc. Now sure IS220d had the famous head-gasket problem, so that is potentially the only real issue unique to IS220d that competitors do not have.

Your car being low mileage and you mostly staying on motorway, I honestly would not expect any problems to crop-up. This is how the car meant to be used and even rather awkward gearbox is much less of an issue when you saying at constant speed with cruise control on.

The problems only start when people use these cars wrong and instead of fixing underlying issue i.e. having wrong car for wrong type of driving, they start messing-up with removing DPFs, EGRs etc. and getting into never ending list of issues.

Totally agree, I've just been saying the very same thing on another thread, diesels were designed to eat up miles, hence trucks/vans all being diesel. Well at least until the introduction of EV's and hybrid technology. I've had my car remapped (custom) with the emphasis more on economy than power, although it is more powerful as a result of the map. I think diesels do require meticulous maintenance and you certainly can't afford to stretch out service intervals, like you might be able to with a petrol. Providing one is rigid with this and uses a diesel for it's intended purpose, then it will serve you well. I've had a BMW 320d,  BMW 330d, Jaguar X-Type, Ford Mondeo, VW Passat and Ford Kuga, put over 500k miles on them, literally never had a single issue with the archetypal issues (DPF EGR, Turbo etc) had a leaking injector seal on the Kuga and a post cat o2 sensor go wrong on the Jaguar. That's it in 500k miles.

I have a car also from new (2007) 250,000 klms IS220D...I can only list poor alloys and now the car isn't worth a new set or expensive refurb.

All paint etc perfect as are all other issues you list...although I'll add the...EGR once blocked....NEVER again I keep it DIY cleaned every 15000 klms when I service.  Usually change all filters, (oil & pollen)....best quality oil and oil filters.  Interestingly I see your location as a non-UK (British Isles... I'm Ireland) and you also as did a recent poster from Portugal have "Sticky Dash"...

Going... hopefully for NEW 2018 BMW X3 G01 next.

WHY?...our age and retired we (wife & I) find the lovely reliable Lexus just a tad low for us getting in and out, thankfully our family was reared before IS220D as the room in the back is too small...the back of our car hardly EVER sat in and it didn't really affect us at all, just sharing info. Plus I've never owned AWD and I'd like to give it a go...always owned a car considered to be of better quality and the Lexus in my view was the best...beating Mercedes I've owned...never owned a BMW before another bucket list reason...LOL

So nice to see a positive review for an IS220D. I'm a new owner of one myself and have been thoroughly impressed for the first 5k miles. There seems to be so many horror stories and bashing of the IS220D on this forum, obviously people are more inclined to post stuff if they're constantly dealing with issues and troubleshooting (looking for advice or venting) rather than if they're experiencing stress free miles, which is what one expects with a modern day car.

Re: your comments about EGR and maintenance, I think it's a pre-requisite with diesels that they are meticulously maintained, stretching out service intervals and using aftermarket parts really aren't the best idea. As well as using them for their intended purpose, long journeys. I've always operated as such and never had an issue with any of my diesels, of which I've had many.

Best of luck with the BMW, they're great cars, well most of them are. I've had a 320D and 330D, both of which were infinitely better to drive than the IS220D, although lacked the refinement of the Lexus. Supremely reliable too. I hope you enjoy the X3 🙏🏼

    latest up date.

got Lexus back from auto elec today, finaly fixed,

it needed a whole new immobilser system (second hand) which includes steering colum. the problem was initialy the sensor that lives right at the back of the dash, but it all had to be changed to mesh with the new sensor, then it blew the new sensor. cue hours spent by very good auto elec examing the wiring loom. turns out a connection had gone a 'bit bad' and damaged (burnt) a wire which then damaged again the control box..

    fault now fixed.

What a relief to have it fixed now 🙏🏼

Hi all, im new to the forum, ive recently had a long winded electrical fault on my 220D Sport. it took ywo auto electricans (well one good and one time waster) to sort it. at one stage on an 58 plate car to see all the front end internals removed - dashe, tunnel audio head, steering wheel put, and the car not having run for 5 months (by that stage)  i seriously considered scrapping it. however, auto sparky Mkii came through. it was a wiring conection had gone bad and caused a fault in the key sensor. so replaced immobilser system which includes the steering colum and bits hidden in weird (to me) places for security reasons. problem was at that stage all that was known was that it was an immobilser fault. new immobilser unit was then fried due to same fault - cue weeks spent by sparky looking for a bad wire. he found it, sensor repaired, Lexus back on road rebuilt. no rattles from reassembled dash etc. so on that basis im well chufed.

car is, as i said a 58 plate sport. in truth its one of the best vhicles ive owned reliavilty wise. as diesels go its not the highest mileage, but its a bit like schitt from a shovel when the EGR is clean and i get the gear box changes right.

Ive done 100,000 miles in it - it still passes mot first time (with maintenace) has an awesome sound system. sadly, and this is maybe me getting used to rear wheel drive again, it no longer looks for excuses to send me to A+E when the road is wet, missus is either happy about that or is hiding her feelings well.

car is a great vehicle, lexus dealers make Jeep dealers look like decent chaps though.  100,000 miles back - car needs new radiator today still got same radiator.  many other issues dealer wise, but why spoil a good car?

That sounds like an absolute nightmare you've had on the electrical front, glad it's all resolved now!

I myself am a new owner of an IS220D and I have to say, I couldn't be happier, yes the car has its foibles; long gearing, not hugely economically, but what car doesn't! Mine is serving me very well after the first 5k Miles of ownership, I'm averaging about 47/48mpg on 70% motorway journeys, 30% country roads/short trips. On single motorway journeys, if I set cruise control at 65-67mph in 5th gear it averages over 55mpg everytime (see images attached of most recent journey, showing tank average of 49.2mpg over approx 300 miles and motorway average of 58.6mpg over approx 110 miles) I've encountered none of the drama that many forum users have, engine is clean as a whistle, EGR and DPF function perfectly, zero smoke etc. Seems like you and I got the only decent IS220Ds in the country 😂 congrats on racking up 100k miles with no reliability issues and still passing MOT first time, my model has performed the same feat, 17 years old, 32k miles when I bought it, and passed every single MOT without even an advisory, with the exception of the last one before I bought it, that stated rear tyres were ten years old and were beginning to perish.

Yes, it is same site as per video I have posted. That said sometimes it is worth reading what people have to say, because sometimes rating all over the place. I have seen guy giving 1 start review because he run over the nail near the side of the tyre and was told he have to replace the tyre... how is that tyre fault?!

Of course, you can't just rely on the scoring. I've seen the same type of thing, 'one star - side wall exploded just because I nicked a rocky outcrop on country road' 😂

But here is the kicker - tyre ratings (including fuel economy, noise, wet and dry grip) are all self-claimed. Basically, tyre companies don't need to go trough some sort of centralised laboratory test to prove it, sure there are standards and expectations set, but they are no enforced... pretty much what so called "EU label" says is "trust me bro" type of stuff. Now sure Premium and maybe even mid-range tyre brands have incentive to do their own internal testing to make sure the tyres meet or exceed the specifications, because they care about their brand image, but do you think brand which calls itself "hit-pis" cares about bad publicity?!

This is where I've found sites like https://www.tyrereviews.com/ incredibly helpful. I'd much rather have user data and well documented anecdotal evidence to go than some spiel from a manufacturer.

Another thing that I hadn't considered before is would you fit a different tyre based on the performance of the car?

100% I used to have a road legal track car (MK5 Golf Gti. 340/440 bhp/lbft FWD 😂) It had five switchable maps on it and if on the rare occasion I was brave enough to have map 5 on, or if I was doing track days, it would only stay on the tarmac if it had Toyo R888s bolted to each corner, anything else forget it. These were the only tyres that could handle fast cornering without falling away and the only tyres that could hold traction under acceleration. For any other map and daily driving, it'd have Yokohama Advans or Avon ZZ3s.

  10. Agreed, I consider good tyres (providing one regularly checks pressures) and well maintained brakes are by far the most important thing for me. I've always found asymmetric tyres better all round, and definitely better than directional for wet weather. My most recent tyres are Firestone Roadhawk (owned by Bridgestone) a step up from the Bridgestone Turanzas that were on it before, but nowhere near as good as the Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta I had on a car previous to that. I've also learned that often there's very little difference between a mid range and premium tyre, but there's worlds apart between a budget and a mid range. As far as a mid range tyre offering great VFM is concerned, GT Radial are very good indeed, eight of ten across the board and incredibly hard wearing. Can usually be bought, fitted for approx £75-80 (225x50x17)

Oh a few very funny comments made. What make me laugh also that the OP to the thread only made one comment and that was the opening post!

Maurice you just love skirting round an issue don't you lol.

John. I've stated categorically that I have personally bypassed egrs and have had complete dpf removal and tuning done more than a few times on diesel cars ive had and have not been reprimanded by admin for it. So sorry pal what you suggested was wrong if my experience has anything to do with it.

You know what Miles. It looks like you're not gonna get any joy from admin unfortunately.

Maybe contact Colin Barber directly. He's a senior global moderator and a top geezer. Gives it to you straight. Private message him and hopefully he'll be able to give you a satisfactory reason and get your original username back in use.

Okay thanks Vlad. Could you DM me a contact for Colin Barber.

I see so again how strange ?

I only gave the thread a brief read so cannot remember much about it but I wonder if the person was one of the royals that you have on most forums.

You can often tell who the royals are as anything they post gets loads of likes from the rest of the clique members.

Maybe I will get reprimanded for saying that.       🤫

If I'm honest after this situation I'm left thinking are there certain people whose opinion you just can't challenge, not only that, but you can't even defend yourself against them and until admin tell me otherwise and explain their actions my opinion won't change. I mean we're all accountable in that regard right 🤷🏽‍♂️

All I remember from the original thread was some of the abuse aimed at the thread starter

What stuck in my mind was someone said (not in jest) that he should be in jail & now I read that it was the OP that was sanctioned ?

    How strange.

It was aimed directly at me, but I wasn't the creator of the OP. The fact I was accused of being a criminal was just one of the many insults/accusations. I even told the accuser three times 'I have not once said I have removed the DPF from my vehicle' most of the content I put up was pertaining to how to prep for an MOT test, using legal products (engine flushes, fuel conditioners etc) yet the tirade of abuse continued relentlessly (scum, liar, criminal) and two threats of physical violence to top it off. I'm glad you agree it seems a little off that I was the one repirmanded while the accuser carried on regardless

This is somewhat confusing to me, I must say.

As Miles has pointed out, I was a part of said thread and I didn't think there was anything in there that Miles did wrong per se.  At least, not enough to justify what sanctions are being apparently applied here.  I also find it strange that no reply has been received that at least explains the reasoning behind what has happened.

Hi Shahpor, it was you after all who defended me in the OP while at the same time pointing out that I was writing content that was against forum rules, I apologised profusely and said it wouldn't happen again. I'm sure you remember this. I genuinely had no idea as the OP was not created by me and already consisted of a considerable amount of content. In any case though, I don't think the things Linas said to me, all of which despicable, are in any way justifiable, of course that's just my opinion, but it was also the opinion of the majority of contributers on the OP too.

    Thanks again my friend

However, abusive behaviour is clearly not acceptable on this website.  On some websites it appears to be the normal form of communication, but that it can be initiated over a dpf may well be unique in the history of the LOC.

I think, Miles, that now having eloquently expressed your hurt at this incident, you can now put it behind you.  And perhaps the ‘Admin’ involved will respond to your satisfaction in a suitably explanatory fashion.

As you are obviously now able to post unfettered, I would continue to do so and I look forward to what I’m sure will be well regarded contributions.

I agree LenT. I'm happy to close the matter, this post was after all intended to get the matter dealt with in an appropriate fashion, that being some sort of explanation from admin and hopefully I'll get one. I would however like unrestricted access back to my original account. Ironically a Groucho Marks quote also springs to my mind 'If you don't like it, you can leave in a huff or if a huff's too soon, you can leave in a minute and a huff' 🤣

I set up this thread to see if anyone could shed any light on the situation I have with the moderators. If you have a different opinion as to how I ended up with said reprimand, that's cool, everyone's entitled to an opinion, but I'm still left in the dark, being unable to use my main account, having unnecessary and unexplained restrictions placed on it.

    Vlad,

You are entitled to your opinion, I hold a different view.

May I suggest that it was the inability to let something go, when presented with a different view, that placed Miles in this situation.

This is IMHO, one of the best forums around and still remains the case.

    Best wishes.

I'm confused Moleman. So if someone actively pursues someone in an abusive fashion, that's okay? And it doesn't warrant a reprimand? But if the person being abused, defends themselves, that's an inability to let something go and is worthy of a reprimand? I should add that every single comment I made, was in reply to another comment, that in itself, by nature, is me not pursuing the conversation and not me being unable to let something go. In essence it was me defending myself and trying to put right the factually incorrect and slanderous comments that were being made against me.

I am an adult and can be presented with another point of view that doesn't align with my own and be completely comfortable with it and in most cases engage with other adults without issue; but that isn't what happened in this instance, the user I reported took umbridge with my point of view, a view that didn't align with their thinking, and they pursued me with offensive language, making inflammatory remarks, defaming me and threatening me with physical violence. Should I have just let that go? Should have I not reported them? In my opinion, that would set a dangerous precedent; one that says anyone can freely pursue someone else in a derogatory and abusive fashion and nothing will be done about it. It is also a dangerous precedent that the administration that moderates this forum allows this type of behaviour, doesn't reprimand it and doesn't communicate with the offender or the victim to explain the steps they've taken to resolve any such issue. It's also completely at odds with the forum rules that said administration put in place.

Sorry to go on, but seriously, I'm struggling to see how you can see this any other way 🤷🏽‍♂️

It's ok Miles. I find it totally strange how admin twisted your complaint as an attack on them.

Maurice. I think you totally got the wrong end of the stick regarding Miles. Just what did you read of Miles's that in your opinion crossed the line? In my opinion he did Not cross any line. And its more than remis that admin have not explained their 'punishment ' and it has put a blight on what I think of this forum.

I've got to be honest, I find it bizarre that I've not had a reply and that somehow I've been the one painted in a bad light and reprimanded based on that wrong portrayal. And thanks for your continued staunch defence, it is appreciated greatly.

WOW. I've heard of warnings being given. I have a permanent one due to my reactions to the very same member you complained about. I've also known of complete threads being blocked by admin.

However I'm totally shocked admin have ignored your emails. Are you sending direct ones or via the contact us on the site?

When I learned I and a few others were not allowed to view that thread I contacted admin c/o the contact us link and got a reply a day or 2 later.

It's a travesty that you have had such punishment for making a complaint against another member.

    Hi Mr Vlad

Thank you so much for commenting! My permanent 3 point warning, message function disabled and content restrictions only came in after I reported said user. It's as if said user has some sort of privilege or is involved with admin. Multiple other forum users have suggested the same thing. I've sent direct emails and messages via the online contact form and I've not received a single reply. I feel I've conducted myself with integrity and contributed positively to this forum. Of course I was going to defend myself when being called a liar, a criminal, had my character defamed and then threatened with physical violence. Wouldn't anyone?

    MIles,

If you are the user I think you are, I felt you went too far during that period, perhaps Admin felt the same.

Did you create any other accounts?

Sometimes it is better to stop, than escalate, reading back then I felt you crossed a line, only my opinion of course.

I hope you will continue to post and enjoy the mostly positive forum this is. Not always of course, but it is usually new users that fall under the watchful eye of Admin. A learning curve perhaps.

Most of us are here because we love the Lexus brand, and from my point of view this is a amazing resource of information. 99 out of 100 users are great and accept different opinions exist.

Overall, I find this a very positive forum, with some great humour.

    Best wishes.

    Hi Moleman

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I've only had my original account and now this one. What did I do in your opinion that went too far? I only defended myself, as did countless others, which I was incredibly grateful for. I mean after all, I didn't use derogatory or inflammatory language towards anyone, nor did I threaten anyone with physical violence; whereas that is exactly what I received from the aforementioned user. When it was pointed out to me by Shahpor that the content I was engaging in was against forum rules, I apologised and said it wouldn't happen again. I had no idea it was against the rules to discuss such topics, like I said in my OP, I did not create the original content, I was purely commenting on it.

Like you, I'd experienced nothing but positivity on this forum and found it utterly engaging, all until 'that' episode. And I too am starting to love the Lexus brand, what with being a first time owner etc. But what I have not enjoyed, in the slightest, is the way in which this matter has been handled. To not even receive an explanation to a situation in which I felt I was the victim of and then to be punished for something that I have no idea what the punishment was for, has left a poor taste in the mouth for sure.

    All the best

  22. Hi all

I previously held another account on this forum, which I signed up to in mid February. I enjoyed positive and fruitful engagements with many users for the first month and gained much useful knowledge and insights. Then around the 22nd of March I got targeted by another user who took umbridge with a post I contributed too surrounding DPF/EGR removal (I did not create the original content) and began to send a torrent of hateful abuse at me, naturally I reported the user, and the next thing I know, I received a warning, had my message function disabled and could no longer post content without moderator approval.  Since this happened on the 24th of March, I've sent four or five emails to admin asking why I was given a warning and why my access has been restricted and I've not had a single reply, I've also tried to post content and none of it has been posted. I really haven't got a clue what's going on or why I have been singled out and I've been kept completely in the dark over the entire matter. Is this standard protocol for this forum or something? I've never experienced this kind of treatment or lack of communication on any other forum I've been a part of, of which there has been many over the last two decades or so.

I would appreciate all and any feedback.

    Many thanks
