  1. Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all your comments, they have been very useful.

    A couple of questions.

    1. I might go for grooved brakes and uprated pads. I was wondering whether this will help getting warped disks???

    2. I also hear that they can be noisy, is that true?

    3. If the caliper is seized how much would it cost to repair? or should get a reconditioned caliper?

    Thanks

  2. not good to hear, who fitted them for you.

As they are free floating type you have to take care.

To see if you have a sticking caliper just feel the wheels after a run...they should not be too hot and both the same temp.

When in traffic jams or at traffic lights I always put my auto into N so I'm not holding the car on the brakes thus building up heat.

Putting salesmans hat on I've a set of 3g fronts with 10 grooves and Mintex extreme pads tucked away............

    Hi

Yes, I have always put the car in neutral and coasted when coming off motorways while gently using the brakes. Actually, I forgot to mention that the car passed it MOT on Friday, although I have had the problem for the past three weeks. Could it still be a caliper issue???????

Are the disks and pads new and if so, how much are you asking for them??

    Ta

  3. Hi All,

I bought a set of new disks and pads (Mintex) 20,000 miles ago. The disks are now warped (heavy vibration at motorway speeds) and the pads are only half worn. I "cannot believe it" and I really p****d off with this.

Could it be that I have a sticking caliper???????

I'm thinking of using sports disks and pads (preferbaly green stuff, which I have heard about). Can anyone point me to a dealer (non-lexus can't afford the prices) where I could pick up a set of sports front pads and disks please??

    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

  4. Hi All,

I had to change my power steering oil cooler (old one corroded and leaked everywhere) and to do that I had to remove the radiator.

The question which I hope someone can help me with is:-

How can do I refill the cooling system without getting air locks? :

I have had this problem before (with an old cavalier) and it caused all sorts of problems.

    Any advice greatly appreciated

P.S: The car in question is MK2 GS300.

    Many Thanx

  5. Hi All,

I was wondering whether you can help?

I have a GS300 MKII (2000) which has 120k miles (motorway miles & FSH). I have noticed a slight knocking noise coming from the top of the engine nearest to the radiator.

The noise is a knocking noise which is present most of the time. It is most vocal when the engine is hot and increases with the revs but can't be heard over 2000 revs.

Could this be a sticking valve or a the water pump (can anyone also tell me where the water pump is situated?).

Has anyone encountered a similiar problem

  6. Hi All,

I have a GS300 Sport MKII which has the 18inch Sport alloys 245/40/18 tyres (Avon Directional Tyres)

I tend to do alot of motorway miles, about 90% of my driving is on the M11, M25 and M1. I'm finding the ride a little uncomfortable and as my fronts may need replacing in a couple of months I though a change may be useful.

Should I consider changing the 245/40/18 tyre to a higher 245/45/18 tyre. Will it make the ride considerably better (will I notice it,), can you tell me the benefits of weaknesses

Has anyone had a similiar problem with the GS300 Sport MKII or is it me getting a too particular. I hate to say it but my friends BMW 530 Sport (2002) rides lot better

    Any advice greatly appreciated.

  7. Thanks for the advice,

I have ordered the leds and can't wait to fit them.

I can seem to sus out what type/size the leds are on the footwells, any ideas?

Do you have any ideas of where I can find some decent replacement side indicators, the car I have is red and will probably buy white or silver side incator lenses.

    Thanks again

  8. Hi All,

I have GS MKII and having seen another GS with ice cool blue interior lights, I want to change my standard interior lights to blue (i'm now hooked).

I have changed the main interior lights (got a dome feston 4 LED from halfords) and now want to change the others too (footwell, rear door lights, boot and vanity mirrors?

I have tried Halfords but they don't stock the ones I am looking for. Can anyone point me in the right direction, obviously the brighter blue the better, but don't have the time to any re-wiring at the moment.

I'm also wanting to change the organge (yuk) indicators to white lenses, I have tried Halfords but they look really naff, any ideas???

    Any advice greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

  9. Hi

    I have a lexus GS300 MKII.

    I have two problems :crybaby:

    Engine

I have recently noticed that there is a slight knocking noise from the engine. The noise isn't there at start up when the engine is cold, but is there when the engine has warmed up. I have also noticed that when reving the car the noise isn't as noticeable.

Noise from the front of car.

I can hear a noise from the front of the car which sounds like scrapping/grinding or loud tyre noise, I also feel vibration through the steering wheel which appears at 60mph and disappears at 70mph, which I have informed at wheel balancing. But if it is wheel balancing should I also hear the the noise or could it be the wheel bearings???

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and I have just replaced the front upper control arms. :tsktsk:

    Thanks in advance

  10. If you don't want to buy from the US, you'll find them on UK eBay for about 200 a side delivered, and as Maneesh said, there's no need to pay 95 quid an hour (or is it 110 where you are?) for fitting, any competent mechanic (or DIYer) could do the job.

    Thanks for the advice,

I'm looking for the cheapest price in the UK and USA, Can anyone please direct me to where I can get some quotes UK or USA and also how many labour hours it takes? (don't want to be ripped off)

On another note, I am quite disappointed with Lexus/Toyota with the price they charge for labour and in particularly the parts. :)

    Many Thanks

    Hi,

Sorry to be a pain, but I can't find the USA parts distributor. Can someone please provide a link to a USA and UK stockist.

    :)

    Many Thanks

  12. you basically require new upper control arms, be it from Lexus UK or Lexus USA. With the current exchange rate being so favourable, I'd highly recommend getting them shipped from over there. It WILL work out cheaper. whilst the lower ball joints can be bought separately, the upper ball joints are not available as a separate unit, hence you have to buy an entire control arm!!!

Labour wise, you could then take it to a non-Lexus garage to get them changed.

It's a car, not a spaceship, so a decent garage will be able to do it.

Do a search for worn suspension, there is an old post of mine with contact details of a US dealer that ships to UK.

    Thanks Maneesh,

Ahh I see. So the Lexus quote for £600. per side is for a control arm. They told me it was for a ball joint. Unfortunately I can't find the message. Can you give me a link.

Any ideas as to how much the labour would cost???

Thanks for all your help Maneesh

  13. Hi All,

I have a GS300 MKII (2000 model) and have just been informed that my upper ball joints have gone :crybaby: I went to Lexus and they have quoted £350 for one ball joint and £220 labour :crying: Total cost £1,100.00 (plus VAT I think). They may give me a 10% discount due to Gold membership, but its still tooooo high for me

I can't afford these prices and wondered whether anyone knew where I could get some cheaper ones.

    Any advice greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

  14. see below for replacement bushes...

those are polyurethane so harder than getting brand new control arms.

    http://www.tmengineering.net/suspension/daizen/make/gs.html

if you do get new control arms, get them from states, exchange rate is excellent right now

oh, you might want to replace lower ball joints too at same time, balljoints are not expensive. 100 bucks for a set

    Thanks Maneesh,

This is really useful. Am I correct in thinking that I won't need to control arms and the bushes advertised in the link can be used to replace the old bushes on the lower control arms?

    Thanks

yes, the bushes from daizen mean you don't need to buy new arms, but i think you have to burn the old ones out first before putting the new ones in..the ride will be a bit harsher with the daizen bushes tho, as the lexus bushes are rubber.

you could try and get uprated trd bushes from japan, as they are rubber,,

    Hi Maneesh,

Mine is a GS Sport and I find its ride is a little on the harsh side already, and I wouldn't really want it to be any harsher. So the softer the better. Any ideas where I can get the rubber ones from japan??

    Many Thanks

    www.takakaira.com

also you need to look on http://trdparts.jp/english/list_aristo.html

i think they are uprated race spec bushes, so maybe too firm for you again. prob best to order the control arms from the states..

Thanks you maneesh for your advice. I will get some bushes and let you know how I get along. Just one more thing (sorry) How much labour will in take £100???

  17. Hi All,

It looks like my front lower control arm bushes have gone :crybaby: . I have a GS MKII on a 2000 plate. Would anyone out there have any ideas as to whether I can just replace the bushes (and if so where I can get them from) or if I will need to replace the arms??

    Any help greatly appreciated. :)

  18. Hi All,

Just got back from Lexus who had changed my cambelt and eleviated me of my hard earned cash.

I have now been informed through the "visual Safety Report" thing they give to you after you have paid the bill that:

    1. There is "play in both front Arms" (whats that??)

    2. "Strut bars split"

    Cost:

    £636.38 for both front arms

    £241.64 for Strut bars.

    :tsktsk:

  19. Hi All,

I think it may be time I replaces the diff oilf. The car has covered 120k and I don't know how often I should change it and what type of diff oil I should use semi-syn or fully syn?

Can someone please let me know:

    - How often I should change it?

    - What type of oil I should us semi-syn/fully syn? & what viscosity?

    - and finally how many litres does a MKII GS300 take in the diff?

    Any advice greatly appreciated.

  20. I must do mine some time ,had to fill up other day after clocking up a massive 254 miles out of a full tank, thing is i kinda drive like an old man, some one out there tell me 250 miles from a full tank aint normal

    ;)

95% of my driving is on motorways, I'm always between 70 and never over 80mph, other 5% in town centres and long contry roads. I too drive like an old man, and get about 26mpg.

I got 340 mile from my tank (until the pump stopped to fuel computer telling me I have 5 miles left). I averaged 69mph on the A1. (again never over 80mph).

    Is that any good?
