I finally resolve my problem, My situation was not the exhaust system(resonator or EGR pipe). It was my WHEEL BEARINGS, and it cost me :D $220.00( a steal). I when to Good year and they charged my $98.00 for the bearings and $200.00 for the labor - over 2hours of work. I am very good with my hands and good DIY guy, but take it to a machanic. I personally feel that the labor on this type of work should be $500.00, just pressing the bearing out and in is a task. Especially, if your bearings were as bad as mine, the outer race was almost stuck to the actuall hub. From a personal standpoint, I would pay that fee with a smile if it give me results like I am getting now. WOWWW!!!! I swear it feels like I am riding on a cloud, no road feel and I can't even hear my engine at all. Ohh my goodness, I never knew wheel bearings could cause such a problem. My car runs great!!! Hey, I am having the exact same problem. I thought it was a flat tire because the noise started @5MPH and got even more pronounced with speed. I changed all four tires and same problem; did Lexus change the bearings from the hub or rotor? I asked because I took it to Meinike and they told me I needed to replace the hub bearings on my passenger side $227.00 hub, $70.00 labor.

Hey All, Quick update on my noise issue, this weekend I went to Midas and they checked my exhaust system. Good news, it was not my EGR pipe, but it was a problem with the exhaust pipe. Apparently, the junction were both pipes come together (Y-pipe) which leads to the two mufflers have corroded and needs to be replaced. The bad news is the device on that pipe (resonator) and it needs to be changed? I was quoted $800.00 just the resonator and $85.00 for labor. The mechanic was very impressed with the design and overall look of the Lexus and said “Lexus makes great cars”, he also said my cats and mufflers are in good shape. Is that a good price for the resonator and can I just do with out one? Going to get a second opinion.

jet airplane noise! does it go up and down with accelleration as in increase in volume and pitch if it does one of you connections onto the airbox/air filter is gone have you pulled the MAF sensor off and given it a clean if its the same as the GS then its only 4 screws to remove it and an electrical connector Hey Legends - thanks for the reply, Actually it does get louder with speed (again over 40mph). I’m planning on cleaning the MAF and sealing the crack on the intake tube with some JB Weld. You know I spoke to a friend of mine yesterday and he made an interesting diagnoses. He said it might be my cats or muffler clogged. Funny, because the feeling I am getting is one of no pressure being released. I know when I took it to the dealer couple months ago he told me I had a slight exhaust leak, but he said it not a big deal. Could my problem be there???

Hey All, I have an interesting problem, for about a week now my car has been running hard. It initially sounded like road noise coming from the tires. However, the noise (engine) is so loud that it sounds like I am riding in a jet airplane. I thought it was the spark plugs so this past weakened I changed them out. When changing the sparkplugs I notice that the plastic intake tube has a bad crake in it. The car idles perfectly and it is not throwing any codes. After the change of spark plugs there is no difference, still the same load noise coming from the engine. It feels like the car is losing power after 40mph, it shifts perfectly and at high speeds the rpm never goes over “3”. What can be the issue, is it the crack in the intake tube, vacuum hose, MAF??? Again it is not throwing any codes and I’m not getting good fuel mileage. This noise is so loud it’s driving me crazy. My LS was so quiet and smooth, and now this – what am I overlooking??? LS 400 1998 (125,000miles)…

Hey, I am experiencing the same "surges when I am cruisng" in my 98 LS 400. I am able to push the gas pedal and drive right thru it without any problems. These surges are very annoying and I was wondering if you found out anything about it?? Thanks buddy..

Hey All, I need your help on this one. I only have the valet key no master but an interesting thing happened to me yesterday. Last night I went to my car to get my briefcase out, I put the key in the driver’s side door and I thing it was simantanouly, I pulled on the door and turned the key to unlock. To my surprise my alarm went off???? I never heard it before so I was shocked? I turn the key to the right (unlock) and the alarm went off. I recently read my manual and it told me how to set the alarm. (Turn key to Lock and lock the doors with the key (turn to the left twice). This does not work for me and I don’t know what I did the first time to arm my car. What did I do before that I am not doing now???/ I usually lock my car with the main lock on the driver’s side(1998 LS 400)..

Hey All, I had it mind to check my fogs this weekend, but a funny thing happened yesterday. I was at the gas station yesterday and as I was heading back to my car I noticed all lights were on!!!! That was weird, I must admit though when all lights are on, my LS looks great. I installed Phillips Blue lights bulbs to give me a blue look on the fogs, but they are white, no blue at all. Seems like my lighting system has a mind of its own, because as I pulled into my driveway to check them out again. That one fog light went out again??? How do I get control off my lighting system???

Hey all, Since my first post, I received my new set of D2R Philips 4300k temp HID bulbs. I installed them yesterday and now I'm good. They are very bright and I am extremely pleased. However, my passenger side fog light still is not on? And now the check the engine light is on? I'm wondering if it's a direct correlation or coincidence. (1) I'll check the bulb (sucks, because I bought them as a pair) (2) then I'll check the connection. Either way, I hope to get it solved - any suggestions? Thanks..

Hey guys, Please help me diagnose this problem, recently I made a post regarding changing my HID bulb in my 1998 LS 400. This weekend I installed bulbs in my fog light unit (bulbs were not in the car when I purchased), Phillips 9006 blue lights. After installation, I turned the lights on and only the driver's side fog light came on?? I turned the lights on and off but same light. As I was turning lights back and forth (Auto to On) I hear a clicking, as if there was a problem with a circuit. My question is with Lexus do all the bulbs have to be in for them to work effectively (Fog and Headlights). Reason being, my driver's side HID light is out (on order). So basically, I am driving around with on headlight (passenger) and one fog light driver's side. I am very good with my hands to fix certain problems, but the diagnosing is bothering me. I'm starting here with some advice before I spend the money and get it diagnosed. Any ideas and recommendations??

Hey all, something happened to me yesterday that scared me. I opened my car with the key (turning the key twice to the right). All of a sudden all the windows came down including the sunroof? I tried to let them back up, but they would not respond. Out of panic, I turned the car off and all systems were functional again? Is this a security issue and is this a concern. Please help (it’s cold now and I would not want to drive around like that.

Hey guys, I'm a new member as well as a new Lexus LS 400 owner (1998 w/over 100,000 miles). I've had my LS now for about a month, and I am extremely, extremely please with this car. This car is very luxurious as well as a female catcher!! However, just over the weekend the headlight on the driver's side went out. I pulled it out and tried to replace it at AutoZone, the guy said they do not carry that and I could only get it at the dealer for about $300.00?!! Wow. I realized now that it is a HID Xeon bulb and the mechanic at the dealer said it was in fact $300.00 and $50.00 to install. He also said he would have to order the bulb (2to3days). WOW, what a dilemma - Is there a cheaper alterative? And also, I want to install new bulbs for the fog light - any suggestions.
