  1. You need to buy or borrow a Battery charger (for a car battery). Connect the positive lead of the charger to the positive lug on the Battery (normally the red cable). Connect the negative lead of the charger to th enegative lug of the Battery. (normally black lead). Plug in the charger and leave on charge for around 8-12 hours. If you take your car on a long run with most of the accessories off, then the alternator should charge the Battery, but not up to full capacity. You could also take the car to a garage and have it boost charged. Simples????

i dont really know, the guys at the shop said i should fill it up, i really wouldent know how to charge it,

or does it charge as you drive it?

    its pretty confusing.

  2. Your Battery is almost flat... put it on charge.

    Col.

    hey guys,

this morning i tried starting my car! and well, it didnt, it made such a weird noise.

like a sort of screeching noise and then it just didnt start.

i re-tried it over and over, on the display it said check completed,

the battery light is on on it, maybe its a new battery i need?

i dont know what to do!

    can someone please help?

    thanks

  3. You missed my point mate. I wasn't getting at you. I'm tired of the moaners on here who slate the 220D and then end up keeping it. I have had mine tested on a rolling road and I have 175BHP at the wheels and get between 41 and 52 MPG from mine. All I do is keep the EGR clean and have it serviced at the proper intervals or before. The gearbox in my 200 sport wasn't the best either, but then you have to compromise. I bought my 220d when it was only a year old. and took extended warranty and service plan, so I really don't worry about it too much. We did 280o miles around Europe last year, and it was a pleasure in the 220D. The Jap's aren't the best at the exec end of the car market, but, they are treated like Rolls Royces in the USA. In all, I am a lucky, happy bunny.

    Col... <[;o)

Who complained about not 100% perfect ? You're missing the point, mate. All i am trying to say is: Lexus IS220D has an awful gearbox and you know that. Engine is not strong as it should be for 177hp because the gearbox doesn't help at all. In my opinion at the wheel you get max 140hp. Body is crazy heavy compare with competition. 1700 kg for a sport sedan ??? Here is the result, high fuel consumption and bad performance. With 18" or 19" wheels even Fiat Panda will smoke you. Audi A8 2008 model weigh 1864kg only. You wanna know why? Because the body is made of aluminum. Even Audi A4 has parts of aluminum on it. Try it with a magnet and you will see.

Yes, totally agree with "TRY BEFORE YOU BUY!!!" This is not always an option for some people. Maybe i paid 3000 euro for that car and i had no chance before purchase to drive test. When you buy online let's say shoes, how do you try them ??? I can't imagine what Lexus thought when they released the IS 220D on market.

  4. Matus, brillliant and sensible reply. I agree fully. I had driven 3 different 220D's before I bought mine. I had aslo tried BM, and Audi, and felt that the Lexus offered more for my money. If you hate the car you have so much, then get rid of it and stop moaning on here. There is NO car which is 100% perfect. Moral as Matus indicates = "TRY BEFORE YOU BUY!!!"

    Col... <[;o)

I am not saying is a bad car Lexus but in my opinion apart from interior extras, suspension and sound system is far away behind the Audi and BMW.

si lexus is better in noise, interior, suspension and sound system.

Then what in is better bmw and audi? :-) In consumption and gearbox?

for many people, including myself are noise, interior, suspension and sound system more important than consumption and gearbox... But this I knew when I was choosing the car.

I don't understand how can somebody buy a car without trying it. Do you buy shoes for 50€ without trying?

  5. Eberspacher = a wholly owned subsidiary of J. Eberspächer GmbH of Germany and was established in 1977 to introduce diesel fuelled independent heating systems into the UK and Eire.

    Col....:winky:

additional heating is eberspacher coolant heating.

coolant heating means, that the heat doesn't go directly to the interior, but the coolant liquid is heated and then the heater as usual heats the interior.

this means that it takes some time to heat. after 55 seconds the eberspacher even doesn't go on full power.

I cannot tell you now how long does take to heat, because I don't remember.

And there are no conditions - if you start it in summer, it will work anyway. it is quite noisy, so you will know it is working.

PS: not every car is equipped with it....

  6. I was told that you can get water pooling under where the windscreen wipers are, and this causes steaming up. It can also happen when you have had the airco on and then switch it off. I think that's why Lexus designed in the front window demist boost???? I may be wrong though. Matus usually has an answer for these type of queries, so, I hope he responds. ( It happems in my o8 Lexus).

    Col <[;o)

Windows steaming up when it is wet outside is often a sign of water pooling somewhere inside. This could be damp mats from wet feet or more likely a leak somewhere. I have only heard of the 2nd gen IS leaking in the boot due to a bad accident repair though, but I am sure someone will correct me if i'm wrong

  7. Don't know how many peeps from the Aberdeen area used Lexus Aberdeen Branch?? Well, it has been closed completely and Arnold Clark Toyota are doing servicing etc. I can tell you, the attitude and service stinks. Not waht I was used to from the many years I used the Lexus branch itself. I had wonderful service there. Now it's gone, I really need to find somewhere who will look after my 220D the way that it was loookes after before. Last service, they never even cleaned the car. Verdict = Arnold Clark Toyota is cr@p!!!

  8. :whistling: :whistling: Well it came!!! bummer, the tube is just too big in diameter to fit down the dipstick hole, and, can't get it down the oil filler hole as it seems t have a restrictor plate which only allows oil fill. Now have to go and get a thinner tube...

I just ordered one and should be here tomorrow. (sat). Doesn't matter if the diameter is too big for dipstick hole as you can stuff it down the oil filler hole.

    Col :hehe:

    looks like a possible answer!

Anyone know if 70cm tube is long enough, and if 8mm diameter is too wide? (it says 5mm internal diameter, which would mean an 8mm outer diameter tube)

  10. At night, do you mean when it is dark, or does it do the same at night when it is light?

    Hi,

Recently I purchased a Lexus IS220D 2006 plate. The only problem I seem to be having, is the headlights seem to stay on at night even after the car is locked, and it doesn't seem to switch off automatically. I have left them on "auto". To switch them off, I have to unlock the door, close it and lock it a few times, only then they switch off.

Is there anyway I can solve this?

    Thanks

  11. Hi Matus,

How do you suck the oil out? I have just done the same thing!!! doh!

    Col

are you standing on a flat surface? Or you weren't standing on flat surface when topping?

In general, too much of oil will stress the oil pump and engine sealings. One 1cm over the dipstick is about 1/2 litre which is quite a lot but with my knowledge I am not able to say whether it is risky to leave it as it is or not.

The easiest to do is to suck the oil. Some garages do not drain the oil, but suck it.

  12. Hi P',

wish I had posted before giving the go-ahead to the paint specialist. I get the car back on Friday. Good news is, that because my son is friendly with the guy, I am getting the job done properly for at least half the normal quoted price, and I know know it won't just be another quicjk tidy up. Thanks so much for your help, support and advice.

    Col

It may not need much of a fight mate, mine was really straightforward. Don't even need to go back to where you bought it from, just go to a Lexus dealer/Lexus bodyshop that you trust and ask them to inspect it.

Once you use a third party Lexus will be less inclined to accept (unless you are talking about an approved bodyshop)

  13. I'll get a full report from the paiont specialist. If it shows that the door/bumper are originals, then I'll make sure AC and Lexus UK know m8. I used to enjoy a challenge, but the last couple of years has knocked the fight out of me worse luck.

    Thanks again "p".

    Col

If the door is original and there's no damage then it should be covered - I had corrosion on my bonnet which despite there being several stone chips they agreed had originated from within and not from the exterior so was covered under warranty.

  14. Cheers m8. Long story, but I am having to pay for front bumber re-spray becuase of a botch job before bought the car. (Toyota Aberdeen told me the car had never been in accident!!!!! liars!!). I took it to a leading local paint specialist and he told me that there had been damage done and that when whoever sprayed on the laquer hadn'y done it properly, that's why it was peeling!! Then he found corrosion under the drivers door, so, something has happened there too. The car is only 4 years old and has very low mileage. So, that other job doubles the price..... The guy doing it has a fantastic reputation, he does all the prestige cars (Lambo's, porsche, ferrar etc. So he really knows his stuff. I haven't the energy to argue with Arnold Clark Toyta in Aberdeen as there customer focus is awful. On top of that, the Lexus Aberdeen branch has now closed, so, the excellent service from there has now gone. I will write a letter to AC, and copy it to lexus UK, but, I don't hold out much hope...

    Col. <[:o(

If it's still the same I think it's 12 years - I just had some warranty bodywork done on my 9 year old IS200 so I can confirm the warranty actually works!

  15. What a great reply. This will be helpful to loads of people... including me. I also love my IS220D with a passion despite a few wee niggles. Still say that Lexus will always outclass the Ford etc. brands. They are not built for the executive/prestige marks like Lexus, BMW and Mercedes. Fords are dirt cheap to repair if they go wrong because the parts uded in the build are nowhere near the quality and tolerances in the Lexus.

    Col... <[;o) (P.S. I also own a Ford!!) lol :winky::winky:

Hi all, I'm new to the forums and have couple of concerns about buying an IS 220D

I've been looking on auto trader and for my budget it's showing mainly 56 plates IS220Ds with around 80K on the clock. I want to buy this car to last, and am going with Lexus for reliability and overall quality of the car.

I was just wondering if anyone here had any advice on what to avoid in the model? Also does anyone know on average how long they last until problems start popping up? I've heard of lexus's lasting hundreds of thousands of miles if well looked after, but buying probably an ex fleet car with 80-100k miles done in only a few years is a little worrying? I'm sure I could get a little astra with lower miles but I just wanted someone else to say, don't worry your lexus with 80k will last much longer than an astra with 40k.

    Any input will help,

    Cheers,

    Jay.

    Hi Jay, and Welcome aboard.

    I'd offer the following

    1. Insist on FULL LEXUS STAMPED HISTORY.

    2. Ask Lexus of all remedial work done on the car

    3. 80,000 miles should be fine. They have warranted the Head Gasket issue to 110,000 miles or 7 yrs.

    4. Take any car on a good test run ( local and m/way) and see what mpg you are getting. Check out the feel of Clutch, Gearbox (1st to 2nd can be notchy) and how well the engine pulls. You should be quite surprised how well they go!

    5. Take a good look under the bonnet. Check oil and water reservoirs(this applies to any car I know but the is220d has a bit of history here) for cleanliness of contents.

    6. Seek assurances from Lexus regarding a future Head Gasket occurence and be picky over the warranty they are offering you on the vehicle.

    7. Read all the posts on the forum relating to HEAD GASKET, Fuel Economy, etc issues. Better to be forewarned.

As they say, a little knowledge is a bonus, so absorb all you can.

At this point I will confess I really like this car despite the snag I had with the Head Gasket. For me Lexus were superb and did the right thing - I really can't complain. At present my Tank Average is 46.4, for me that's damned good!

Best of luck in finding what you want.

  16. :winky: :winky: No Brainer mate.. Lexus every time!!!

Javadude - yes I am aware but how strange as you say - I consider the RX400 more lux than the IS - so why wouldn't they give the RX the keyless entry??

I also know that the RX is automatic and I have only ever driven manual!

Oh and that its a bit bigger parking wise than the IS!

A few things for me to think about - I dont really want to move to another marque but have been loking at the Ford Kuga as well
