  1. I own a 07 220D, unfortunately I experience the engine problem about a year back the car had 24k on the clock. It was recovered to Lexus Sheffield they did a fantastic job re-built the engine fit new pistons, EGR value, cat and engine management control unit. This was done free of charge even though the car was out of warranty, do not forget this problem is a known problem to Lexus therefore the engine is guaranteed to 100k.

As far as MPG goes I get around 42 travelling to work which is mainly urban roads this drops to 38 in the winter, which I am quite happy with. Love the car first car I have kept for more than three years.

  2. Lexus in Coventry and Birmingham both quoted me approx £580 for the 100k service on my IS220d. As I spend a lot of time in Sunderland I phoned up the Newcastle Lexus dealership who quoted £320 for the same.....needless to say they are having the car on Monday!!

Kon123 Toyota Durham are even cheaper and both garages are owned by the same group. In fairness Lexus Newcastle will price match and are very good.

  3. Its very dissapointing that there is an issue with these cars and it is all hush hush. Lexus Teeside where in a place of half full/ half empty. They didnt seem to keen to inform me of what was happening then they tried to fall over themselves trying to keep me happy. I have tried to build my confidence with them but i think they have lied from the start to finish ( i have this B******t detector that was working over drive ) The car was sold to me with an expectation of 45 mpg plus but is struggling and then the service manager ( under his breath ) confirmed i would struggle to get over 37 mpg if i was lucky

So any one out there...the car is lovely .....but its no good for fuel economy and is likely to need a bottom end sooner rather than later. It turns out that Lexus are covering under warranty up to 7 years old or 118k miles.

    Hi Jen & Paul

You sound as if you have lost total trust which is disappointing and can tell you I have had excelent service from Lexus Newcastle and of late Sheffield not had any experience of Teeside and I live mid way between them and Newcastle. I am positive that you car will get sorted and your cofidence will be restored, I am now getting 40 MPG it has gentally improved sonce the engin rebuild.

    Regards Merv

  4. ihave just bought a 38k is220d. Within 10days i have had the bottom end replaced. carboned up/ lack of power... the car is now doing after 4days 30mpg. Was advised i didnt need to run it in!!!!crap fuelconsumption. Not a great start to lexus...

I have had the same work done on my car following a breakdown on the M18 the RAC did some temporary fix but only lasted a few miles eventually the car was recovered to Lexus Sheffield. It was with them for a week in this time they fit modified pistons and rings, did a de-coke fit EGR valve, an ECU and catalytic converter. Excellent service from Gary and his team at Sheffield. It was explained to me that this can happen at any time with early engines mine is on 57 plate but who knows when the engine was built, regardless of how many miles the car has done What happens is oil passes the piston rings causing a build up of carbon in the cylinders any un-burnt oil goes into the EGR valve to cause a blockage and then into the catalytic converter damaging that.

At first my MPG was poor around mid 30 and I was getting 42 before my breakdown, it is understandable that after such extensive work the engine will be tight and will take time to bed in. I have now covered about 1000 miles since the engine rebuild and the MPG has steadily risen and is now at 40, I think it is a case of gentle driving and you should see an improvement given time.

My car was out of warranty and the work was done free of charge, do not forget that this engine in guaranteed for 100k.

  5. Hi all.

Bought my L is220d 3 months ago, had no problems so far until last wed. The day before drove 200miles to get home from my sis's mostly motorway kept it on 5th gear with avr speed 80mph and revs between 2,5 - 3k the journey went fine with no problem however next day got in the car drove obout 5 miles (in town) and the next thing all them lights came up (engine managment, red triangle, VSC light, and CHECK VSC) and obviously car went into a limp mode.

Went to the private garage to get it diagnose, got error code P2002 (we all know what it is)

Was gonna take the car bk to the dealer (private dealer) and give it to him to fix it as when the problem occured the car was still under 3 months warranty he gave me.

In the meantime drove the car over the wkend to work (3miles distance) and bk home and then 2day all of the sudden on my way bk home the car didn't go into a limp mode even though all them lights were on. At the time it seemed strange but whenever i got bk into the car about an hour later surprisingly all the lights were gone and the car was goin ok. So i took it on motorway drove 20miles away and bk home keeping revs up between 3 and 3,5k and so far its all ok.

So there is my question now. Does anybody know what the hell hapen???

I was meant to go to ur man tomorow but i dont see the point now. Instead of that was thinkin about goin to Lexus dealer and let them to have a look an use their computers maybe they will be able to give me a right answer.

My concern also is, what if it happens again in month or 2 months time? the car will not be under warranty and to be honest I wont be able to pay almost 2k to fix it.

I dont really know what to think Im all confused. I was told that the problem is caused by carbon builded up and blocking some kind of filter inside a cat converter. . . Is it posible that it just cleared itself somehow???

Started even thinkin abouy gettin rid of my car but I only bought it 3 monts ago and like a lot so far...

    Any idaes????

Any help will be much appreciated. Thank u.

Read the link below sounds like the problems I had you also need to take it to Lexus dealer early engines have a warranty of 100K miles because of this problem

  6. LOL! I'm getting around 40-42mpg on my 11 mile route to work. I'd probably be better off with a small capacity petrol turbo but company car rules dictate otherwise! In winter I was down to 32mpg at one stage and had to buy a seat warmer as the engine never got up to temperature and the 1200rpm idle annoys me so much I have do switch off the fan. I've never experience so many idiosyncratic features in a Japanese car and I've owned quite a few.

Chuckie That’s remarkable same distance same MPG

Yes mine was much the same on MPG only slightly better in winter fell to around the 38 mark I am sure the performance will return when all settles down after the rebuild getting better day by day.

    Merv

  7. Maybe because the engine has 'bed' in and the weather has warmed up. I noticed the strange characteristic of idling at @1200rpm when the heater is on until it is FULLY up to operating temperature. Maybe a 'de-coke' every now and then is worth doing using the Italian tuning method! LOL! 6 mins @ 3500rpm should do it.

Perhaps, either way I am a lot happier now that my MPG has improved, the revs at 1200 is characteristic of the engine as you say until it is fully warmed up. I travel 12 miles to work and in winter the engine is still not up to normal running temperature after this journey, it has been that way since day one.

It was when I was travelling on the motorway when my troubles started I too thought the run at higher revs would clean the engine - wrong it packed in!!

  8. Why does the ECU need to learn someone's MPG/driving style. Sounds like c@ck to me - the Long Term Fuel Trims will be reset, but the ECU should compensate accordingly and you will see this on your Short Term Fuel Trim figures. Eventually the Long Term Trims will adjust, but the ECU doesn't really need to 'learn' anything in my opinion.

Chuckie I have done about 300 miles since my engine re-build and the MPG has gradually increased and is now around the 40 mark. I know what you are saying that it is difficult to understand why the ECU has to learn but something has changed for the MPG to improve.

  9. Pauls - I have had the same work done on my car following a breakdown on the M18 a week gone Friday the RAC did some temporary fix but only lasted a few miles eventually the car was recovered to Lexus Sheffield. It was with them for a week in this time they fit modified pistons and rings, id a de-coke fit EGR valve, a ECU and catalytic converter. Excellent service from Gary and his team at Sheffield. It was explained to me that this can happen at any time with early engines mine is on 57 plate but who knows when the engine was built, regardless of how many mile the car has done What happens is oil passes the piston rings causing a build up of carbon in the cylinders any un burnt oil goes into the EGR valve to cause a blockage and then into the catalytic converter damaging that.

The has ECU has to learn your driving style because being new it has no history the MPG on my return journey home from Sheffield from picking up the car was quite poor it is improving slightly as for it taking 2000 miles I hope not can’t recall it taking that long when the car was new. Before this breakdown I did not have a problem with poor mileage it was returning on average just over 40 MPG which I was quite happy with so I do hope it improves quickly.

  10. I also have a 220D on a 57 plate and I get about the same MPG as you my son has the 250 also on 57 plate and he tells me that the best he can get with careful driving and air con off is 32MPG. So I figure it is a question of how many miles you do per year against the difference in the cost between the two types of fuel. Having said that the 250 is a far superior car to drive.

  11. Just a quick one, I must admit that I thought this car was going to be

a Glorified toyota and not representative of the Lexus Brand, Picture's didn't look inspiring.

Yesterday had to have new tyre....and sat in the new CT........It's actually rather good...

much Bigger than I thought Too.... and 70 to the gallon.

Had a test drive on Saturday OK not a must have car very firm ride very expensive for what you get the mid range one is £27500 you are difinatly paying for the Hybrid name.

  12. The average MPG is the average for the journey you are making or last made and can be zeroed by pressing and holding the reset next to the Speedo. Whereas the tank average is as it states the average of the fuel in the tank since last filling up. This zeros automatically when filling up and can not be manually reset. The figure you should therefore use is the tank average which is your actual MPG.

  13. Hi all

I am a new member to the forums, but have been reading through them for some time now

I know how annoying it is when people post questions that have been posted before so my apologies if this has already cropped up!

As the title suggests I have decided to purchase a second hand Lexus IS 220d. I have done a lot of research and it seems to be a love or hate vehicle.

    I can only afford a medium-high mileage 2006 (55/06/56) model.

Couple of things then. I cant find an actual spec sheet for the model varients i.e SE, SE-L, SE-I, also the mutimedia from what i can seems to be an option on any of the models i have mentioned. Does anyone know where I can get access to these?

For those that have had to service one outside the warranty how have the servicing costs been? Any ideas on what it costs for basics such as brakes etc?

Finally, is there anything I should look out for before I buy one. I know about the fuel economy issues on some, but anything else i should pay cloase attention to?

any help would be mucho mucho appreciated

    Hi Jaspabt

I have a 220d se (57) and I love it, I think I may be one of the lucky ones no rattles and I get on average 42 MPG. I have to say that that is travelling to and from work a round journey of 25 miles and I am a steady driver. Goes without saying that this increases on a long journey to around 45ish.

Had a 20k servise two weeks back which cost me £250 at Minnories Durham which is part of the same group as the Lexus dealership in Newcastle where I was quoted about £100 more.

On the down side the boot is small but I can still get two sets of golf clubs in quite easy. Make sure you check the alloys and wheel nuts for corrosion. Merv

  14. just a quick question....washed, clayed, polished, and applied Klasse AIO/carlack 68. applied the carlack around 3 hours ago and buffed it off and was going to leave it over night and wax in tomorrow. but it has just started to rain..will that affect it the carlack in the sense that i will need to re-apply or will it be fine?

It will be fine Carlack is best left for 24 hrs to harden you could even wash the car before waxing with a mild shampoo. Make sure you apply two coats of wax to build up the protection.

  15. Good point.

Problem is, I am in Surrey and they are in Teeside. I did a trip to Lincoln yesterday to view a car there which proved to be a waste of time but I have been assured this car is perfect and am paying the right kind of money so am hopeful.

I will check the car and takeit for a drive when it arrives, before handing over money

vk2oo3 Why not not couple your viewing with a few days visit to the North East your will not be disappointed. There are some very interesting places to visit like Durham, Newcastle and the Northumberland coast, Durham is only about 25 miles from Lexus Teeside.

  16. Hi,

    Was roaming around on

    www.cleanyourcar.co.uk

and saw some interesting waxes - Dodo Juice and Victoria Wax.

Anyone any experience before I splash out

    Cheers

    Hi Gib

I get all my cleaning products from Clean Your Car, Tim is very good with excelent devilery. With regards to Victoria Wax Conners is great on dark cars I use it all the time, it is also worth reading some of the guides on that site lots of very knowlegable people.

  17. Merv, thank you

Will give that a go...but the question is, if the 20K service includes the diff oil change and pollen filter adding more, so service should be about £200, how can they then justify coming down by £160-250??? and if they do how can I get my head around them trying to rip me off with the first quote

Exactly - I rang Newcastle for a quote which was circa £240 they said if I got a cheaper quote would I give them the opportunitly to requote because they wanted the business. I told them of my quote from Toyoya, within five mins they rang back and said that they would price match. Guess we have to accept that we are in a age of shopping around in a competitive market place or be "taken to the cleaners".

  18. Key fob nearly 3 years old when battery went flat. No probs use the spare, that lasted all of a week. Been informed by a electronics mate that as soon as you put a battery into a key less fob it is constantly active sending out a signal so although it may never be used it is still using up its battery power. Another little thing Lexus forgot to tell you. Moral of the story is have a spare battery but don't fit it till required.

Had several Toyotas when they are serviced the fob Battery has been changed - I would expect Lexus to offer the same service ??

  19. Good one this, just booked mine in at the local Honda Dealer!!!!

Lexus Newcastle want £430 for the 20K service on the 220d and Teesside want £380. The Toyota Dealers, Hodgesons Toyota, Newcastle refused to quote as did RMB Teeside Toyota, both garages are not far from the Lexus dealer and are linked so they have got wise to it.

So Honda do a happiness incentive where they will service any vehicle, phoned and they called back after half an hour, having obtained the service schedule and cost for Lexus parts and quoted £198....now tell me how can they be £182-£252 cheaper?? must be the gold spanners and silk overalls at Lexus or more likely we are being ripped off, big style.

Might give Teesside a ring and see if they will match and see how low they will go, before noting I feel ripped off.

P.S. my BMW services with long life oil and 18-20K intervals was only £180, so adds to the mystery of Lexus prices.

Got a quote from Minnories Durham Toyota (who are the same group as Lexus Newcastle) £130 for 10k service, Lexus Newcastle price matched this. Took it to Lexus experienced excellent customer service attention to detail.
