UPDATE --- PROBLEM IDENTIFIED -- SEE BELOW
RX 350 owners will be aware that there has been a recent safety recall for Lexus rubber mats which could potentially cause the accelerator to jam in the fully open postition.
The part number for this is RX PZ414-K2353R only.
Two weeks ago I checked my mats (RX PZ414 K2355R - OK) and therefore took no action.
On Wednesday of this week I had the frightening experience of the throttle locking open - caused by it jamming against the driver's mat. The car rapidly accelerated to over 70mph, but fortunately I was overtaking on a clear road straight road and was able to bring it to a safe stop. If I had been planning to pull in behind another car or there was a bend in the road it could have been a very different story.
I have been in contact with Lexus UK and they are following it up - but it will be some time before anything happens, if at all.
I am now driving the car without a rubber driver's mat.
If you have a Lexus rubber driver's mat, I recommend that you at least check that it is positioned well back. Try pushing the accelerator with your hand when switched off to see how close it gets. Also check that it does not slip under forward pressure.
I hope this may prevent someone else going through this.
THE PROBLEM WAS----- that the dealership who provided my new car with mats failed to fit them properly. There are two small round holes in the rear of the mat which fit over the clip hooks securing the carpet mat. The centres of these holes were still rubber and needed to be pushed through with a screwdriver or something so they could be fitted over the hook. Check yours.
