  1. is it feasible for me to be able to complete this work myself i.e is it a simple matter of removing piston rings and replacing with new rings?
  2. Hi guys - just wondering if I were to pull apart the engine (carefully ) would it be possible to tell if my piston rings are worn or if there are an other telltale signs of wear and tear in that department?
  3. Car has done 90K miles or 150K kms. I had a chat to my local mechanic yesterday and are going to get them to check it out when i take it in for its warrant of fitness. it definitely sounds like it is more a worn bores/rings problem - what sort of work is involved in fixing this? is there any work the mechanic can do at the same time to add more power?
  4. I agree with the rebuild thoughts - i dont see the point of replacing it with an engine that could encounter the same problems! do automotive stores sell compression testers? The car has been running fine its just the smoke on the overrun that has me a bit worried - any recommendations on a good thick oil?
  5. so would it be better to have the engine reconditioned or should i maybe look around for a new one?
  6. yup definitely summer over here! jus got a standard exhaust so i thought it might be something like above with the seals as i had a GT starlet before this that had a similar problem. its done about 88K miles. its going through a bit of oil lately but i had it serviced 10000 miles ago and they changed the oil over and i just topped it up the other day. are piston rings/bores expensive?
  7. has anyone else had problems with smoke coming out the exhaust after cruising down a big hill? it typically happens after backing off the accelerator while going down hill and then replanting the foot on the pedal and there's a big cloud of smoke that comes out. any thoughts?
  8. Just been talking to Toyota and they have apparently resolved the problem. The screws that control the idling levels were apparently fiddled with by someone, and the exhaust was blocked up due to the engine having been running so badly. They have cleared that out and put the screws back to the original factory positions and it is apparently running as good as gold now!! :P
  9. yeah they have the car at their workshop - i went in on saturday for a chat and they have tried several things but nothing seems to work and they think that replacing the entire throttle body is the only way to get it going. the car is running but just wont accelerate properly. the only problem with that solution is they have bench tested the throttle body and it appears to be working yet for some reason the signal is not getting through to properly accelerate so it feels like your driving a tractor when you drive it because its so slow to pick up speed.
  10. Just had a chat to Toyota and they are adamant that the Throttle Control Motor is working and that I need to replace the throttle body but are quoting $4500 to fix it!!! any thoughts?
  11. Hey i dont know if they have checked that fuse but i presume they have but will check it out anyway. the throttle control motor has already been tested three times and is apparently working fine. the car is now running but still quite sick they have finally been able to take a snapshot on the engine data and are looking at that at the moment. so to the best of my knowledge the throttle control motor is fine but i will check with them again about that.
  12. any idea what could cause these faults?
  13. they've completed tested throttle body and tried a new ecu but still no go and now apparently think it could be something to do with the VVTi
  14. the fault codes are apparently P1125 and P1128 does that ring any bells with anyone?
