Thats a cracking good price but would guess that is a recon that has a new "Gut pack".. Essentially a new compressor. Volvo do the same with their compressors.... But I would repeat that I would get a second opinion... Indeed it does look like a good price, but I will take the advice and use get the second opinion; especially since there are no abnormal noises coming from the thing. I Googled Dave Norton and it pointed to Air Care Automotive in Elstead, about 6 miles from me, they do a mobile service diagnostic for £35.Can anyone give me an idea as to how much of a mission is it to fit a new IS300 aircom compressor? Ta muchness to all, will report back.

Transporter, Thanks for the gen. The aircon man said that one of the pistons was sticking. I don't know much about aircon, so am not really in a position to have a view. I'm surprised it's broken in only 7 yrs. I'm still a little suspicious it may just be a re-gas job and the geezer was trying it on; but I could just be being paranoid....I dunno! The breakers thing is an option I had considered, especially as I think the aircon compressor on the IS300 is a common part across a number of Toyotas. Probably cheap, but risky!

Good people, I have a 2002 IS300 Sportscross with 93,000 miles on her, she runs very well. However the aircon is not cooling at all, though it makes all the right noises. I assumed this was just a re-gas issue, given that the car is now 7 yrs old. But apparently she requires a new compressor. The aircon geezer that did this diagnosis today - a non franchised aircon fellow - quoted £1,000 for fitting a reconditioned compressor and £1,400 for a new OEM one. This seems just a tad steep, about 25% of the probable current value of the car! I'm near Guildford in Surrey - Hindhead to be sepcific. Anyone with any constructive suggestions would be appreciated; I have in mind specifically: Decent aircon technicians Source of new or reconditioned compressors Or indeed any other ideas? ta
